PRINCIPAL'S NEWS
Queensland Week!
Queensland Week is a celebration of the state's culture, heritage people and industry. On Monday 6th June 2016 we celebrated the state's birthday or Queensland Day and acknowledged the 'birth' of Queensland as a separate colony in it's own right. In 1859 Queen Victoria approved the name Queensland over the suggestion of Cooksland, in honour of Captain James Cook. The news was heralded to Moreton Bay when the ship Clarence sailed in to the harbour with the word Separation painted on her hull! The Clarence was welcomed to Brisbane with a 14 gun salute, a blue light and a fireworks display.
In celebrating Queensland Week communities can share a sense of pride in being both Australian and a Queenslander. It is time to reflect on how fortunate we are to share such a wonderful lifestyle.
School Summative Reports (Report Cards) - Semester 1 2016
Each semester Aspley State School provides a Summative Report (Report Card) to parents to communicate student progress. The report will detail the learning achievements of your child, compared to others in their year level. It is important to note that a C standard means that your child is achieving the year level standard as per the Australian Curriculum and that this is a great result.
The Summative Report also provides information about behaviour, attendance and extra curricula activities. The reports are to be emailed to parents in the last week of school and I ask that parents ensure that their email address, as recorded by the school, is up to date.
You can ensure that your details are current by accessing QParents through the school website or through the QParents App. Alternatively, to update your contact details please email admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au or complete the Change of Details Form and return this to the school office.
Pick Up Zone (off Horn Road)
Thank you to the parents who clearly display their family surname on a sign on their sun visor. By doing so, it enables the duty teacher to call your child and expedite their collection after school.
If you do not have a visor sign you can make one at home by printing your name on white paper and laminating it. If you wish to request a sign to be provided to your family please email admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
Aspley Sparrows Soccer Award
Congratulations to the Aspley Sparrow Soccer group for their successful submission to be a winner of the Start Playing Stay Playing Excellence Awards – Innovation Category. I was proud to attend an awards ceremony where the Hon Curtis Pitt MP, Treasurer, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Minister for Sport presented a special award to students from Aspley State School. See more about this great initiative later in this newsletter. Special thanks to Carolynne Hassall and her team for their ongoing commitment to making Sparrows Soccer such a success.
See the video in Sparrow's News.
School Opinion Surveys
Each year the Department of Education surveys students, parents and staff to seek their opinions about Aspley State School. The survey provides an opportunity for the school community to provide valued feedback which is used to inform school improvement strategies.
The annual School Opinion Survey will be conducted in the period of 11 to 29 July 2016. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve.
Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with students next week.
Parents/caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online at the school, and school computers will be available in the school library.
Survey queries or requests for translations can be directed to the Principal, Mrs Leann Griffith-Baker on telephone: 07 3863 9111 or email admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
Year 6 Excursion to Canberra
Aspley State School year 6 students and their teachers are very excited about the upcoming trip to Australia's National Capital, Canberra. Students will fly to Canberra on Sunday 14th August 2106 for 5 nights.
In Canberra students will visit the national institutions that call Canberra home, including the High Court of Australia , The Royal Australian Mint , Canberra Glass Works, National Archives, Mount Ainsley Lookout, the Dinosaur Museum, Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Questacon – National Science and Technology Centre , National Portrait Gallery , the Parliament House , The Australian War Memorial and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament . This is an amazing learning opportunity for students which supports their current research into Australian Prime Ministers and extends their knowledge and understanding of history, politics and English. Students will also spend a day chilling out in the snow at Perisher Valley!
Think You Know? - Cyber Safety for Young People
Some studies say we learn our parenting skills from how we were parented. In rapidly changing times, parents are best to be equipped to manage contemporary issues such as keeping our young people safe online.
We need to know how to navigate the digital platforms where our young people now frequently interact. Young people are quick to take up the latest developments in technology and are often the first to know when something new comes along. They are growing up in an ever-changing technological environment can offer many benefits and young people can have a lot of fun doing so.
Social networking, gaming and chatting present many opportunities. They can communicate with friends and family from all over the world, access all types of information for school projects, and express themselves creatively, all with the click of a button or touch of the screen. You may wish to talk to your child and see what applications they use to have fun online.
We want to encourage you to learn more about the ways your child is using technology positively, rather than just being concerned about the potential misuse of technology. It's important to have a balanced view of the role technology plays in all our lives.

Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
As part of National Sorry Day students from Aspley State School attended the Sorry Day Ceremony hosted by the Noonga Reconciliation Group Inc. at Kalinga Park on Thursday 26 May 2016. At this event our school students invited community participants to write messages of reflection on a banner which was displayed in the park. The students enjoyed presentations from other school students who sang, recited poetry, danced and read their poignant writing on the topic of reconciliation. At this event a bollard with information about The Journey Home was unveiled. This signage tells the story of Kalinga Park. Aspley State School students and parents enjoyed a shared morning tea and the chance to reflect on the important cultural significance of indigenous Australians.

Congratulations to the many students who proudly represented Aspley State School in the recent Metropolitan North Schools Regional Cross Country competition. Special congratulations to Jamaji Iselin-Leone who was selected to represent our region at the up-coming state cross country competition!

Please be advised that ARC will be on this week and next week. We do not have ARC on the 21 and 22 June because of the Sports Carnival.
School Dress Code Policy
With the cooler weather upon us, it is a timely reminder of the expectations for our winter uniform.
Jumpers and tracksuit pants must be in the approved school colour (maroon).
If students wish to wear a shirt/ skivvy or tights/ leggings underneath the school uniform, these must be in school colours (maroon) or black.
A reminder that all items should be named so that they can be reunited with their owner in the event that they are misplaced.
Waiting Areas for Parents:
A reminder that we have designated waiting areas for parents.
The approved Waiting Area before school is only at the Eastern Hall. This is for students from all year levels and there are no exceptions (unless involved in an approved school activity).
Before 3pm, the only approved Waiting Areas are under A Block, the Maundrell Terrace pick-up area and the Eastern Hall area.
Please be advised that if you are waiting in an area not listed above, you will be asked to move on. This is not our preferred option.
We would appreciate your support with this.
Sports Carnival P-2
On Tuesday 21 June, the Preps, Year 1 and Year 2 students will be having their Sports Carnival.
All students will be required to wear their house coloured shirt, a broad brimmed school hat and sunscreen for this day. We do not encourage any shakers as this causes too much litter and is environmentally unfriendly.
The schedule of events is as follows:
- sprints with the whole school (8:45 am – 10:45am)
- tabloids (11:25am to 1:25pm)
There will be 14 tabloid activities set up on the oval for the students to rotate through (see schedule below).
Parents and Caregivers are most welcome to be part of the events on sports day. However, to ensure the smooth flow of the transitions and for safety reasons, we appreciate that siblings are supervised at all times if on the oval.

JAPANESE STUDY TOUR
SCHOOL STUDY TOUR 2016
Our school will be hosting a Study Tour this year. A study tour is a group of international students coming to Australia (Aspley SS) to learn English and be immersed in the cultural experience of going to an Australian school and staying with Australian host families. The group of 20 Japanese students aged 14-15 years old, will be arriving on the 21st of August and departing on the 2nd of September. This particular group of students are from a prestigious school in Japan called Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School, which is located in the Kyoto Prefecture.
An important aspect of Study Tours is in providing "homestay" for the Japanese students. Information about providing "homestay" and the application form follows this message. If anyone is interested in providing "homestay", please complete the application form and return it to the Administration Office.
I will keep you all up-to-date with any details regarding the Study Tour. Elaine Dooley (6DA) is also an Accredited Officer of Study Tours which is fantastic! She too will be working with me on the Study Tour.
Kind Regards
Rowena Mina (6MV/LOTE Teacher) and Elaine Dooley (6DA)
CHAPPY'S NEWS
Chappy's Corner
This week the Local Chaplaincy Committee (LCC) met last week to make a strong representation for the great work of chaplaincy at Aspley State School. The committee meets each term to support the activities at school for students and assists to fundraise to keep this valuable support for students, families and staff. We are seeking a parent representative to join this group. The next meeting is on Friday 26th at 7.15 am at the Aspley Coffee Club. Please see Chappy if you would like to be a part of this important group.
Our Chappy, Lindsay, works two days each week (Thursday and Friday) to be a safe person for young people to connect with at school and he provides a listening ear, caring presence and a message of hope. Chaplains run positive, fun activities for students and assist in fostering supportive, caring school communities.
Working with other members of the schools support team, the Chaplain cares for students struggling with issues such as difficult relationships with other children or family members, poor self-esteem, family breakdown and depression. The Chaplaincy service is available to everyone in the school community regardless of their religious beliefs.
Another important feature of school chaplaincy is its high regard for spirituality, an integral part of overall health and wellbeing. School chaplains provide opportunities for students, parents/carers and staff in schools to explore their spirituality and to take advantage of spiritual strengths, assets and resources available to them.
Aspley State School will commence a new program for Year 3 to Year 6 students to participate in the Forge Program. Forge will give the students the opportunity to interact with others in a world view and spirituality discussion group. Students will discuss significant life issues and how they can understand these matters ad apply this understanding to their daily life. Students will meet on Thursday at second lunch at the library.
This program is accessible with parental permission. If you would like to find out more information or register your child in this program please email Chappy at lklie5@eq.edu.au

SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS
Program Wins Excellence Award
Aspley's Sparrows Soccer Program has been announced Winner of the Start Playing Stay Playing Excellence Awards under the Innovation category.
At a presentation in Queen Street Mall on Tuesday, 7th June, Ms Griffith-Baker received the Award and a bursary cheque of $1,000 on behalf of Aspley State School from the Honourable Curtis Pitt MP, Treasurer, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, and Minister for Sport.
Administered by the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (through Sport and Recreation Services), the Excellence Awards has recognised that our school community has implemented a new and innovative initiative to increase and enhance women and girls' participation in sport.
Developers of the Sparrows Program and the volunteers that make it possible were congratulated for great work in making it an achievable goal to get more Queensland women and girls physically active.
Reason to Celebrate Gala Day Achievements
A wonderful story of 'trials-to-triumphs' has emerged in relation to Aspley's girls participation in Gala Day soccer.
When offered as a dual-gender elective sport in 2014, just 19 girls signed to the option of soccer. Novices at best, the girls were beaten week after week. Far from inspired, they were deflated and disheartened because they simply did not have 'the basics'.
That's when Mr Farrow started running soccer training at lunch times. Identifying how keen the girls were to improve, he asked them to commit to morning training sessions. …and Sparrows Soccer evolved from there.
In an exciting revelation from coordinators of the three-day Term 2 Gala Days 11-a-side girls soccer fixtures, Aspley State School's Senior Girls team officially finished second on 24 points. Just three points in front were two teams that tied on 27 points each: Eatons Hill State School and Albany Hills State School A.
With 11 teams in the competition, our Senior Girls' achievement is to be applauded. What's possibly just as exciting is that the Sparrows Program (original) vision – to inspire on-field capacity and confidence in upper-grades girls – is being realized.
Well done everyone!
As mentioned in the Principal's news, Sparrows Soccer were awarded an award for innovation. Please find attached the video of the presentation.

As winter has arrived, please ensure your child's belongings are clearly named as many jumpers are being removed during the play breaks and being misplaced. Lost property is situated on the eastern side of the hall outside the Uniform Shop. If the items of clothing are clearly named, they will be returned to your child. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
