All Write

Students at Aspley State School are dedicated to improve their writing and to this end in Semester 2 each class will begin their day with a 15 – 20 minute session called All Write. In this time students will write in a variety of genres for topics or learning areas (subjects) that pertain to their current class learning as directed by the Australian Curriculum. Writing is often a part of English and can be a part of other learning areas e.g. mathematics, science or social sciences (history, geography), the arts (visual, music, media arts, dance, drama), Technologies (design technology, digital technology), Languages (Japanese), or Health & Physical Education.

We are seeking parent volunteers to assist at school in this time and I encourage you to contact our writing volunteer coordinator so we can best direct the volunteers. If you can help with this task please nominate yourself by completing the survey at the link below.

School Watch

With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours crime in our school. If you see anything suspicious, please remember to call the School Watch number – 13 17 88.

The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools.

If you do see something suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter. Keep the number handy – 13 17 88 – and let’s work together to help create a safer school community.

Ms Jabs is so very proud of your efforts!!! One of our talented youngsters who attended this wonderful event has penned her recount of their experience below:

Ruby Wakeford – 4R

Band Blitz was amazing! I loved meeting new people and learning new skills. The best part of participating in Band Blitz was playing ‘March of The Romans’ and ‘Ode To Joy’ with so many other children in such a big band. My flute playing has improved so much in just one day! I loved the experience and I will definitely be participating in Band Blitz next year!

The email address is library@aspleyss.eq.edu.au .

PREP SCIENCE NEWS

The Prep children carried out a "Three Little Pigs" investigation to conclude our science unit, "What's it made of"? Their challenge was to construct a model that The Big Bad Wolf (the hairdryer), could not blow down. Their construction materials were either sticks, straws, pipe cleaners, cups or cardboard. The groups were all very successful in keeping The Big Bad Wolf away from their little pigs. They worked very well in their groups, and had so much fun! Well done Preps!

JAPANESE STUDY TOUR

School Study Tour 2016

Our school will be hosting a Study Tour this year. A study tour is a group of international students coming to Australia (Aspley SS) to learn English and be immersed in the cultural experience of going to an Australian school and staying with Australian host families. The group of 20 Japanese students aged 14-15 years old, will be arriving on the 21st of August and departing on the 2nd of September. This particular group of students are from a prestigious school in Japan called Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School, which is located in the Kyoto Prefecture.

An important aspect of Study Tours is in providing “homestay” for the Japanese students. Information about providing “homestay” and the application form follows this message. If anyone is interested in providing “homestay”, please complete the application form and return it to the Administration Office.

I will keep you all up-to-date with any details regarding the Study Tour. Elaine Dooley (6DA) is also an Accredited Officer of Study Tours which is fantastic! She too will be working with me on the Study Tour.

Kind Regards
Rowena Mina (6MV/LOTE Teacher) and Elaine Dooley (6DA)

CHAPPY’S NEWS

After School Sports Program

Aspley State School has an after school sports program that will commence in Term 3. The program is endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission and is designed to assist and promote sport in schools and enhance student participation. Please find attached the permission form.

Highlighted Program - Mini Men’s Shed

Mini Men’s Shed is a mentoring programme aimed at children from Grade 3 to Grade 6 and runs Friday afternoons between 3 and 4 all year.

The program uses a child centered approach to empower and equip children to manage their emotions and overcome the challenges they may face at school and in their personal lives.

Mini Men’s Shed provides a supportive, safe and non-judgmental environment in which children can work through their problems and learn to thrive.

The programme utilises hands on activities to help engage the students, already this year some of the students have successfully finished building their own padlock, constructed a bookcase and are currently making furniture out of recycled material.

See below a completed bookcase and tire chair.

Thanking you
