PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome Ritsumeikan UJI High School
This week Aspley State School welcomes the students and teachers from Ritsumeikan UJI High School who are our guests for two weeks. On Monday morning the Junior secondary students attended a school assembly, enjoyed a tour of the school and enjoyed a delicious Australian morning tea with their buddies. The students come from Kyoto, Japan and visit our school to learn English and to learn about the Australian culture. My special thank you to the school families who have hosted these students in their homes. I wish to recognise the great work of Ms Mina, LOTE teacher, who has coordinated this special opportunity for our school community.
School Council Update
Congratulations to Mr Stephen Solly, who is the new parent representative for the Aspley State School Council, elected at the recent P & C Association meeting on 16 August 2016. I wish to thank Mrs Sharon Rodgers for her dedication to the school council and being an inaugural member of the Aspley State School Council. Her contribution is greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to Mrs Nelma Wright who has been re-elected as the staff representative for the school council and will serve for a further 2 years.
An Aspley State School Council Handbook is currently being developed and outlines the charter of work for the school council and will assist members in their role. You can keep informed about the school council by reading their updates on the school website. The next school council meeting is on Monday 10th October at 5.30 pm.
Swimming - Term 4 2016
Swimming is an important life skill and a common recreation in our Queensland lifestyle. We are indeed fortunate to have a school pool which makes the cost of swimming more affordable to the families at Aspley State School. The strong Aspley Swim Club and private lessons available through Swim Solutions also encourage swimming to be a strong school sport.
In term 4 I will introduce smaller instructional groups for school swimming lessons for students in years one to six. This will improve the corrective feedback for students and the quality of tuition for students. By having a smaller student to teacher ratio, there will be increased support for student learning and safety. To achieve this, I have made the decision that students will have a levy of $15.00 for each child for swimming in term 4. This fee allows the employment of an additional qualified swim instructor who will work with the HPE teacher, Mr Schmidt. This new position will be advertised in the coming fortnight on the school website to commence in Term 4.
Two volunteers will also be required and will enhance the program. Parents/ carers are highly encouraged to assist with the school swimming program. A note will be sent out to request swimming volunteer helpers in the next fortnight.
In 2017 swimming lessons will commence for Preparatory students in fourth term. A higher charge will support tuition and additional swimming instructors for these younger children to learn in smaller groups when they may have little or no swimming experience.
Canberra
The students from year 6 enjoyed the trip of a lifetime to Canberra last week! Students flew to Canberra and toured the national capital and enjoyed a day at the snow. Students visited a vast selection of attractions including the Governor General’s Residence, Old Parliament House, Parliament House, The Mint, The Electoral Commission, The Dinosaur Museum, The National Portrait Gallery, The National Archives, High Court of Australia, Geoscience Centre, Canberra Glassworks, Regatta Point, War Memorial and the Australian Institute of Sport!
A highlight of the excursion was where students were able to enact a mock parliament at Parliament House where they learnt first-hand the processes of democracy in our great country. My special thanks to Mrs Nelma Wright, coordinator of the excursion, and thank you to the other school staff who accompanied the students. Thank you also to Mr David Smith, excursion volunteer. Mr Smith is a retired Deputy Principal of Aspley State School.
BConnected
BConnected will be the revised program where students from Aspley State School can bring their own iPad to support their learning in 2017. This program provides the opportunity for children in years 4-6 to bring their own iPad and use it for learning both at home and school. A full sized iPad will be on the booklist as an Optional Item for students in year 4 in 2017. If students are provided this device in year 4 they will use it well across the next three years at primary school. Students from year 5-6 in 2017 may also elect to join in BConnected and expand the existing program.
Students are enabled by technology as a tool to enhance their learning. ICT is a tool for every occupation, and is undoubtedly, a significant part of the world our young people are growing into. Some researchers who say that children who cannot access technology are the unskilled adults of the future! Using an iPad is not making your child smarter, nor does it guarantee better grades! Using ICT provides learners powerful technologies to locate, define and manipulate information to create new knowledge or to enhance their skills, knowledge and understandings. ICT is a tool for learning and not the curriculum!
Students will still engage in traditional hand writing, reading books, mathematical computations, drill and practice and will also learn in ways that engage new mediums to assist students to collaborate as global citizens. The teachers will provide students multiple opportunities to use a variety of tools for learning, and an iPad or computer is just one of many tools, used to support student learning.
To join the BConnected Program students need to satisfy four conditions:
- Bring their own privately owned iPad (with WiFi), robust case and accessories to school each day
- Agree to the terms of the BConnected to enhance student learning
- Pay a Digital Resource Scheme to access software at greatly reduced prices. This will include a numeracy, literacy and reading resource.
- An apps placemat will be provided for each year level and parents are to ensure the device is preloaded with the required apps. These apps are then owned by the iTunes account owner which is to be the parent / carer. Once purchased the app can be loaded on multiple devices. That is if you have more than one child in BConnected you only pay for the app once. Parents / carers support students to back up their data at home. There will be support to show you how to do this.
QUESTIONS?
Why an iPad?
iPads come with many software programs (apps) preloaded on the device that enable student learning and provide a, bring your own (BYO) device, at an affordable point for families. iPads also present a minimal security risk for the transfer of viruses to the school PC server and through to the whole of government.
Which iPad?
- iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi 64GB or
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro Wi-Fi 32G or 128G or
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro Wi-Fi 128G
- (Note: The iPad mini is not desirable at school due to the small screen size and insufficient memory capacity. Students who currently have iPads at school are not required to upgrade their device.)
http://www.apple.com/au/ipad/compare/
There are many Apple Resellers that stock iPads and it is worth completing a price check before you purchase. Purchasing an iPad from the Apple website includes free engraving.
What are the conditions of use?
By signing a BConnected Agreement to use an iPad at Aspley State School, students and their parents / carers, agree to the terms of use as per the Home and School Digital Use Agreement which outlines:
- Conditions of the iPad to be used to support student learning and communication
- Use of the prescribed apps required for the specific year level
- Agreement to engage in appropriate use of the device within the school setting
- Provision of a strong iPad case. An investment in a robust case is essential to minimise the opportunity for screen damage or breakage. A variety of products exist and this is at the parent/ carer discretion. (An investment in a $40 case is cheaper than $120 to replace a broken screen.)
- WiFi connectivity is required for the iPad will allow children to login to the school network using their existing school user name and password. Through this login students will have a safe learning environment and school staff can monitor downloads and apply word scans for any inappropriate language or content. The Department of Education and Training, Qld provides a robust set of filters to enable students to engage with websites that support learning. Sophisticated filters largely minimise the opportunity for students to engage with inappropriate content or websites.
- Registering the serial number of the device with the school.
- No gaming at school. Two folders will be required on the iPad, one for School and one for Home. Any games are kept in the home folder and are not to be accessed at school. The consequence for misuse is that the iPad is to be given to parents and kept home for one week.
- iPads will not be used at lunchtime, unless students have specific permission to complete a specific research task. This will be rare. At Aspley State School we want students to be actively playing and developing their physical skills, sportsmanship and social skills at lunchtime play.
- iPads will be kept in a locked classroom at lunch times and go home each day.
What does this mean for the current iPad Classes?
Students who are currently in iPad classes in 2016 can continue to use their iPad, as they currently do in 2016. There will no longer be a requirement for the 3G Card, although students who subscribed to the current agreement, may continue their 3G access under the existing rules for use established in 2015 at their parent’s discretion. When iPad classes were initially set up the school did not have robust connectivity and 3G was necessary for a reliable access to the web. In 2016, the school has completed an upgrade of approximately $100 000 to provide students with high density wireless access. This upgrade was supported by Qld Government and the school contributed approximately $49 230 in 2016 for these works.
Students in current iPad classes may join with students joining BConnected in 2017. The composition of the current year 4-6 classes may change in 2017. Next week parents / carers in years 3-5 will receive a survey to indicate their interest, for their child, to join BConnected in 2017.
What if my child does not have an iPad?
All children currently have a Department of Education and Training login and password to access the internet, by authenticating through the school computers and the school server. Students without their own device will continue to use school computers and some school iPads as they currently do now. The school devices are not able to be personalised for the user and they give ICT access to students who do not have their own device. School devices are shared and this will continue in 2017.
Can my child join BConnected at any time in 2017?
-Yes, providing they bring their iPad, preloaded with the identified apps, and have a robust case and the required accessories (headphones, stylus). Students and Parents/ Carers will be required to sign a BConnected Participation Agreement and pay for the Digital Resource Scheme.
Can my child use their iPad at High School?
Currently students who attend Craigslea SHS can use an iPad at school. iPads are not currently supported at Aspley SHS and these students use windows based laptops in this environment. School decisions about ICT change and each school determines their own pathway.
Digital Resource Scheme
The Digital Resource Scheme is a payment for all students whether they have their own iPad or use school devices. This resource levy will provide students access to some learning websites at a greatly reduced cost e.g. Mathletics school price $ 20 per child and a private subscription is $ 99 per child.
A range of software / websites are currently being evaluated by teachers e.g. Spelling City, Reading Eggs, Literacy Planet. The exact websites covered in the Digital Resource Levy will be identified in term 4. This price will be confirmed in term 4 after teachers complete an evaluation of the products available.
If you would like to learn more about BConnected and see first-hand, students using their iPads to support their learning, come to community coffee next Monday, 29 August 2016, after the school assembly at 9.30 am – 10.30 am.
Alternatively parents/ carers may wish to attend an evening, information session on Wednesday 7th September 2016 at 6.30 pm -7.30 pm at the school hall.
CHESS CLUB
The inaugural Aspley Chess Club got off to a roaring start last week with over 20 participants and many more on the waiting list from Years 1-6.
The library was filled with exclaims of delight or moans of dismay as the children outwitted each other.
A huge thanks to Mr Paliwoda for lending us his time and skill to help us improve our strategies and also to Miss Oliver, Mrs de Blonk-Smith and Mr Farrow for volunteering their time for the club.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RECRUITMENT PROCESS FOR 2017
With Term 3 upon us, we are commencing the recruitment process for 2017.
It’s a fact that the majority of people who are literate in music learn it in a school setting, and we are extremely fortunate to provide music instruction through our school. If students were not part of our school music program, there is very little chance they would seek to develop their musical skills outside the school setting — and that would be detrimental to their human growth.
It is crucial that you are aware of the positive benefits of learning to play a musical instrument — and one year of study is certainly not enough to gain all of them. You see, being a musician trains your child’s mind for success in every aspect of their life. The executive function your child will develop over the next few years through music are transferable to every academic subject. Without instrumental music education as part of their day, your child will be missing out on some uniquely important life lessons and tools.
We hope that your child chooses to commence in our incredible Music Program in 2017. They deserve to explore their musical education and the wonderful benefits that come with it for their entire school life, if not beyond. It’s with this in mind that we can’t wait to see your child in band/orchestra next year.
Aspley State School children in Year Three upwards are offered the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Children from Year Four upwards are offered the opportunity to learn woodwind, brass or percussion instruments through the school’s instrumental music program. Children cannot be enrolled in both programs.
The Recruitment Timeline below outlines the various steps that will be followed through Semester Two for our 2017 intake. Parent information letters will be coming home to our current Year 2 (string) and Year 3 (woodwind/brass/percussion) students to participate in 2017 in week 9 of Term Three. Please take note of these dates, as testing/enrolment outside these dates if not permissible.

At Aspley State School we believe it is important to provide opportunities for students to develop their talents and we are proud to promote Aspley Speaks Out as a program which enables all children in Years 5 and 6 to set attainable goals, produce quality speeches and appreciate their own and their peers’ talents and achievement.
This term students have presented speeches to their class peers and five students from each class were chosen to present at the semi-finals which were held on Thursday 25 August during school time. Students in years 4, 5 and 6 got to witness our semi-finalists in action and they were not disappointed.

YEAR 2 SCIENCE ‘ROCK AND LAND FORMATION’
Last week the Year 2 classes did some hands on Science Investigations about Land formations and erosion. Each class were broken up into 5 groups and made their landscapes with dirt, soil and rocks. They then poured 500mL of water over the top of the highest part of the landscapes to discover what happens with the landscape when water is present – erosion happens. Each group worked in the science lab and had a wonderful time learning about erosion. These photos are of 2S!!

EARLYACT CLUB - UNWANTED BOOKS
Unwanted Books and Stationery
Just a reminder that if you have any children’s books or stationery at home and no longer need them, the Aspley Earlyact Club would love your donations. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, all donations of books and stationery we receive will be sent to schools in Papua New Guinea. The Aspley Rotary Club will package all the goods and organise for their transport.
All donations need to be brought to Mr. Grove’s room by the end of Week 8.
Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.

iSEE CARE’s CARE Hamper Program
Everyone needs a little love and iSEE CARE believes in a love that is unconditional, puts others needs before our own and one that is practical and loud - we call it ‘LOVE OUT LOUD’!
Our CARE Hamper Program supports families struggling to feed their growing family in tough times. In desiring to train, equip and educate young people, we want to get the basics right first.
An iSEECARE ‘CARE Hamper’ consists of one of our fun and sturdy shopping bags full of non-perishable items designed to help supplement a weekly grocery shop. A hamper can feed 4 people for a week.
We deliver CARE Hampers direct to our school network every week of the school term, ALL YEAR LONG!!!
If you require one of our CARE hampers, please don't hesitate to contact Chappy he will be sure to get a CARE Hamper to you without delay.
CAN OF CHANGE
You can help bring CHANGE to our city.
In your school’s Administration office we have set up one of our “Can of Change” money tins. We are raising the much needed funds to help us to continue to LOVE OUT LOUD on our school communities across brisbane for long into the future. Next time you are in there, why not pop a coin into the tin and show your support.

CEREAL FOR COFFEE – Breakfast Club
1 in 5 school children are going to school hungry. It is estimated that the average student loses more than 2 hours a day of learning time when they come to school hungry.
Cereal for Coffee is an initiative to change that. If you donate a box of cereal to one of the participating cafes listed below on 20 September 2016, they will swap it for a free medium coffee, tea or hot chocolate!

SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS
Futsal option: Term 4 inter-school sport
Soon, students in Years 4-6 will be selecting their Friday inter-school sports. Plenty of fantastic team choices can be enjoyed, one of which is FUTSAL!
Although this modified form of soccer is generally played indoors, we’ll be playing FUTSAL in the great outdoors at a nearby venue. We’d certainly like to see plenty of Sparrows signing up for FUTSAL, where they can put all their Sparrows Soccer Program skills into play.
Bring back your shirt
So we can kit-up Aspley’s inter-school teams, if you still have a Sparrows/School sports top at home (from Term 2 Gala Days) please bring it to Mr Farrow’s classroom. We need to check our lists and be sure that borrowed school resources don’t go missing.
SPARROWS TRAINING – every Thursday from 7:30am Be sure to see Mr Power, so that he can record your attendance! |
