Craigslea State High School Annual Awards Night
On Wednesday night I was an invited guest to attend the Craigslea State High School Annual Awards Night. It was a privilege and I was delighted to celebrate the achievements of the many young people who were recognised for their significant achievements as learners and global citizens. With many of these recipients being previous Aspley State School it was especially, a wonderful celebration.
World Teachers' Day
Every day, Queensland teachers are making a difference educating and inspiring young people across our state. World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks for the significant contributions they make in our classrooms and communities.
Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society.
World Teachers' Day is held internationally on 5 October. As the day usually falls during school holidays, Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year. In 2016, World Teachers' Day will be celebrated in Queensland on Friday 28 October, during State Education Week.
Ms Tracy Davis MP, State Member for Aspley has kindly honoured our teachers with a celebration cake and at assembly next week our student leaders will present all staff with a certificate of appreciation.

Fun with Science
Our Year 2 students got their hands dirty this week making Kinetic Sand with our fabulous science teacher Mrs Balfour. This fun tactile experiment combined everyday sand with detergent, cornflour and water, demonstrating how the properties of a material or substance can be altered when mixed with other materials. As you can see from the photos below, the students from 2C had a great time in this hands-on lesson!

Professional Development for Staff
Last week the school staff enjoyed a day of professional development exploring: the pedagogical model of Curiosity and Powerful Learning; enquiry based learning; using ICT to support learning and learning about apps that are helpful tools for learning; reading development. Staff also reviewed the School Strategic Plan 2016-2019 and made links to the role of their team and for each staff member. Some staff completed on-line training including Code of Conduct, Workplace Health & Wellness and Student Protection training. Teachers will participate in OneSchool training on Monday evening the 24th October to assist them to record, manage and report student learning using this software.
School Facebook Pages
To streamline school communications and to support the required communication procedures defined by the Department of Education Qld and P & C Qld, the school will rationalise the Facebook Pages that currently exist to consolidate to one school Facebook page, as a single source of information, about Aspley State School.
I advise you that as of 30 November 2016, the year level Facebook pages, will no longer exist. This advice is for school community members to enable you to save any information or contacts from these pages before they cease to operate.
Bromeliad Donations
To support the wonderful gardening efforts of our Year 5 students, we are calling on donations of Bromeliad plants in pots so the students can create even more beautiful spaces within our school. Bromeliads are hardy, shade-loving plants that require little maintenance, making them ideal for areas around our school that don't get much sun.
All donations can be dropped off outside the school office in the A.S.S hedge garden at the bottom of the ramp. Please let the office staff know when you have dropped off your donation. I thank you in advance for your support.
