Tuckshop Day

Schools across Queensland give a special thank you to their tuckshop workers and volunteers on Tuckshop Day, being Friday 4 November 2016. Tuckshop Day recognises the great work of thousands of people across the state each and every school day. It also highlights the important role tuckshops play in school life. Providing nutritious food and drinks means families can have one less task to worry about at the start of their day and helps students to concentrate and learn well in class. Our special thanks to Karen and our band of dedicated volunteers who create delicious food and drink choices for our school community.

All tuckshop volunteers are required to have a Working with Children Blue Card to support the safety of students. People wishing to volunteer in their local school tuckshops should apply as soon as possible as the Blue Card process may take up to eight weeks.

METROPOLITIAN REGIONAL HONOURS MUSIC CAMP – HIGHLIGHTS FROM EBONY GLOVER & NINA ROBINSON

Two of Aspley's string players [Ebony Glover (cello) and Nina Robinson (violin) - both in year 6, attended the Metropolitan Regional Honours Music Camp last month. Both girls had to complete a successful video audition to gain acceptance into this event. Their experiences are recounted below:

EBONY GLOVER

"When I found out I had been accepted into Honours Camp, I was very excited. As soon as I signed in, I looked around and saw some people I knew from another orchestra in which I play. The first thing we did was tutorials. We played through the pieces a couple of times then we went to choir. We learnt the songs, which were pretty easy. We then had a break, when I sat with the other Aspley students. After break finished, we had orchestra, which was fun – hearing all the different parts go together. We had another break and then we had Symphony Orchestra. It was awesome seeing all the instruments coming together. We repeated all this on the second day but the third was different: we rehearsed the songs and pieces. Time flew very quickly until we were about to start the concert. The concert was a success and I would definitely do it again."

NINA ROBINSON

"The Honours Music Camp was a three day music program in which four fortunate Aspley students (including myself) had the pleasure of participating. The first two days were packed with many activities: individual practice, string orchestra, symphony orchestra and also choir, for which Miss Donna Dyson wrote the two songs. We sang 'Milkshake' (a fun song about making milkshakes) and another song depicting us as one big nation coming together called 'The Spirit of Australia". For those two busy days, we practised and practised for the big concert, held on day three. The concert was very exciting and successful. I enjoyed the symphony orchestra, in which we played my favourite piece, 'Capriccio Espagnol'. It was great fun, but what I thought was best was the fantastic opportunity that Music Camp gave us to strengthen our music skills and make friends."

Amanda Jerram (Instrumental Music Teacher – Strings)

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS

Toilet Block Facelift

On the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd November, senior leaders and their parents came armed with paint brushes to paint the toilets. Over the two days, we completed the both boys' toilets and the senior girls' toilets. They certainly look fresher and brighter now.

I wish to thank Mac, a handyman, who organised us and did the final coat of paint, fixed the drains in the basins and all the lights. Also, thank you to the Glover, Platt, Mulcahy, Rodgers, Wang and Hassall families who came along and assisted with the painting.

We will need one more day to complete the junior girls' toilet and also repaint the railings outside the toilets.

Home Bake Stall

A couple of weeks ago, Kennedy Weeks approached the Student Council about organising a fundraising event to assist the Children's Hospital. Kennedy wants to give something back to the hospital to thank them for all they did for her during her treatment for bone cancer.

The Student Council has decided to run a Home Bake Stall on Friday, the 18th November during both eating breaks. Children in years Prep to Year 2 can purchase some delicious goodies in the first break and the remainder of the school can buy during the second break. The costs will be included in the next newsletter and also spoken about on future assemblies. It is hoped that children will buy one or two small items to have as part of their lunch that day.

The Senior Leaders and their families will be doing all the baking so there should be a lot of yummy food.

I look forward to the Aspley Community supporting Kennedy to donate all proceeds to the children's Hospital which is having their annual Hospital Appeal that weekend.

ASPLEY CUP RACE DAY

Aspley's Race Day

A huge thank you to all the children and staff who came dressed for the races and for their gold coin donations.

Due to wet weather, Aspley held their first ever indoor race meet which was a huge success. As the races were held at the beginning of the school day, many parents were able to stay and watch.

For the first time in many years the Senior Leader team beat the Staff team by a convincing margin.

Thank you once again for your support of this event.

KIDPRENEUR'S REFLECTIONS

Wow! Our Club Kidpreneurs had their opportunity to shine on Market Day. All stalls made a profit and much to the children's surprise, all products sold out quickly. The children's hard work throughout this program really paid off and they should be extremely proud of their efforts and commitment. A big congratulations to all students involved. You have made our school community very proud of you.

Sally Agnew and Liz Campbell

Cupcake Nation

Nina Robinson
Lily Revie
Makayla Brown

The Club Kidpreneur program gave us a great opportunity to be involved in team work, budgeting and opening our minds to the world of business. There were times when things went smoothly and other times when we simply struggled. We got there in the end!

We had to decide how many cupcakes we would make and it was difficult to work that out because so many people were giving us different advice. Now, we wish we had made more! Our cupcakes sold out really quickly which took us by surprise.

Making the cupcakes and running the stall was a lot of fun. It would be fantastic if we could do it again and we think it should continue every year.

We have donated our profits to the Red Kite Foundation.

Kids Cards & Krafts

Luciella Spink.
Connor West
Giovanni Beaumont

Hi! This is Connor, Giovanni and Luciella from Kids Cards and Krafts. Our experience with the Club Kidpreneur program taught us that making a business is harder than we thought. We learnt about money floats, mission statements and coming up with a business plan.

Making decisions as a group was hard, particularly when it came to agreeing on a logo design, a name for our business and a suitable product. We overcame these problems by thinking about what grabs our attention and what we would want ourselves.

On our market day, we had issues with our cards not selling. Next time, we would make less cards with better quality. In the end, we made a profit of $45 which will be donated to the Cancer Council.

We all enjoyed the experience and we would recommend it to all children in Grades 4, 5 and 6.

Enviroplant

Mae Sampson
Sanuli Etipola
Willem Kennedy

Club Kidpreneur was a challenge! Throughout Semester Two, we found out how to run a business. We discovered that teamwork can be hard and sometimes we clashed because we all had such different ideas. In the end, it all worked out really well.

Our only regret is that we didn't make as many plants as we would have liked. Our plants were extremely popular and sold very quickly.

We got to use our maths skills when working with money. This taught us how important maths is and now we understand that we can be anything we want to be when we grow up!

We are excited about donating our profits to the Starlight Foundation.

Kooky Cupcakes

Amelia Coates
Eamon Langton
Zane Lai

Our Club Kidpreneur experience taught us that sometimes it is hard to work together. We overcame many challenges, including another group also making cupcakes. This competition inspired us to make better cupcakes. We raised our prices in order to make a bigger profit. We're excited to be donating this profit to the Heart Foundation.

We took pre-orders from teachers and parents which also helped our profits.

If we were to do this again, we would make more salted caramel cupcakes because they were extremely popular and sold very quickly.

Mask Mania

Luke Woo
Axel Parry
Anneka Platts

We faced a few obstacles on the way but we did it! The making of the masks took up a lot of our time and it wasn't always easy to decide on which ones would be more popular to sell.

Even though many hours of hard work went into our creations, it was worth it! We made a massive $103.40 which is being donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

If we had the chance to do it again, we would have a larger variety of masks.

Tie Dye Singlets

Jesse Lovett
Yash Bordia
Amelia Lam

Our business created tie dyed singlets for kids. We sold all 50 singlets within the first two hours of our market day. One of our biggest challenges was when we discovered that the dye we had bought washed out in the machine.

We then had to replace ten singlets and buy a new tie dye kit.

If we did this program again, we wouldn't buy the original dye and just use the tie dye kit instead. We would also look at raising our prices to at least $7 in order to make a bigger profit.

We have donated our profit to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

Beadall

Cade Murphy
Janika Lapworth
Michael Brian

In Club Kidpreneur we had to overcome many challenges. One of these was simply deciding on what we were going to make. This was not always easy because of our big imaginations! However, it all worked out in the end!

At times we felt that people really doubted us. We had no customers at first but then suddenly things got really busy!

Even though it was hard to budget and come up with a product, a logo, prices and outfits, Club Kidpreneur taught us a lot about starting and running a business.

SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS

Break-up Brekkie: 10th November

Final training session for Sparrows Soccer will be on Thursday, 10th November.

Celebrate your dedication and achievements with a break-up breakfast following a friendly game amongst Sparrows participants. Starts at 7:30am. Bring your usual training gear.

We'd welcome help of mums and dads to set up a few breakfast tables with sliced fruit, yoghurt cups and warm pastries! Please SMS Carolynne Hassall on 0404 883 462 if you can lend a hand that morning.

Expressions of Interest – 2017 Helpers

When year 6 students graduate at the end of this school year, we will sadly say goodbye to some of our long-term and founding Sparrows helpers. Generational turnover means that when we resume in February 2017, we eagerly need to seek volunteers for:

  • girls assistant coaching and field help
  • boys assistant coaching and field help
  • communications and administration leadership (yes, Carolynne Hassall has to hang up her Sparrows cap too)

Over the coming weeks, please make contact with Carolynne Hassall on carolynne.h@dhconsulting.com.au or 0404 883 462 if lending a hand is within your capacity.

The Sparrows Program survives on volunteer efforts of parents and staff, some of whom have never experienced soccer previously. Don't be shy! We encourage and welcome your involvement to ensure our program stays strong.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Tracy Davis MP – Kids in Care Christmas Gift Appeal

Tracy would like to inform you of a very special Christmas Gift Appeal that she holds each year to put smiles on the faces of kids in care.

In Queensland there are around 9,000 children who can not live at home because it is not safe for them to do so. Their Christmas should be as joyous as that experienced by their peers, and opening a special little gift lets them know we care.

Children in care are aged from newborns to 18 years of age, so the gift options for both girls and boys are vast. This year Tracy is aiming to collect 500 gifts to be distributed by the local Child Safety Service Centre to children in foster care and other out-of-home care placements in and around the Aspley Electorate.

Gifts can be dropped off until 9 December at Tracy's Collection Box located between Coles and Kmart at the Aspley Hypermarket or popped into the Electorate Office, Shop 8A, 46 Gayford Street (near Coffee Club), Aspley. Tracy would also be happy to arrange for collection of gifts if this is more convenient.

Tracy was thrilled to recently receive gifts for kids in care from the Rotary Club of Aspley who helped kick start this year's appeal.

If you would like any further information on this special appeal, please do not hesitate to contact the Electorate Office on 3554 7100 or email aspley@parliament.qld.gov.au.
