PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Woolworths

On Tuesday 30th May 2017 the school leaders accompanied me to the opening ceremony of the new Woolworths store at the Aspley Hypermarket. We enjoyed a performance by the Aspley State High School Vocal Group. We were happy to learn that 40 young people from that high school have gained employment at the local Woolworths store. Woolworths has kindly donated a cheque for $1000 to Aspley State School, Aspley State High School and Aspley Special School. Our school leaders decided that our school will use this donation to buy new books for the school library. Thank you to the parents of the school leaders who supported them to attend this special event. Thank you to Woolworths Aspley for their generous donation of $1000.

Working Bee

Thank you to the volunteers who worked at the recent working bee. As a result we have a new outdoor chess board, safety treads on the pools steps, repainted walls and repainted outdoor games templates. Thank you to those who generously gave of their time. Thank you to Mr Simon Pritchard who coordinated the team who completed these school improvements.

Asbestos Removal Continues

From 10.00 am on Saturday 3 June 2017 works will continue to remove asbestos from the library office and server room which is located downstairs in the Administration Block. Government policy prohibits any person on site while these works are being completed. The asbestos being removed is within the interior of the building and this work creates no risk to neighbours.

Any person attending swimming or language classes on Saturday 3 June are to ensure they leave the site before 10.00 am so the asbestos removal works can progress. No person, other than the contractors are permitted to be on the school site while these works continue. Thank you for your support as we improve our school.

Additional asbestos removal will take place on Saturday 17th June and Sunday 18th June 2017.

Assembly

Due to school photographs being held in the hall next Monday 5 June the school Assembly for next week will be held at 8:45am on Tuesday 13th June. At this assembly we will recognise the students who have been selected to represent our school at district/regional sport.

There will be no school assembly on Monday 12th June as students will use this time to meet in their sports teams in preparation for the upcoming athletics carnival.

School Photographs

School photographs are scheduled to occur on Monday 5th June and Tuesday 6th June 2017. Earlier this week students were provided a timetable outlining the days and times for their photos. Students are to bring their envelope on the day of their photo with the correct payment enclosed. For families who wish to have a photo taken of siblings these photos will be taken at the hall from 8.00 am – 8.40 am each morning.

Community Coffee Evening

Parents / carers, teachers and students are invited to attend an informative Community Coffee Evening on Wednesday 2 August 2017 at 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm. At this information night Open Eyes Social Media will give parents, children ranging from Year 3 – Year 6, and teachers a clear understanding of why they need to protect themselves and what tools are available to help create more secure accounts and use of these sites.

Presenter Tricia Munn will provide the opportunity to learn and network whilst contributing to a fabulous movement towards building a more social media safe and cyber-harassment aware society.

The presentation will start at a very basic level to ensure that the fear of the unknown is taken care of first and that the “cyber-lingo” throughout the presentation will be understood. It will also inform about the devices that children have access to and how they can be monitored better and set to avoid inappropriate material and unwanted attention.

Open Eyes has a safety vision to bridge the gap between children’s love of social networking and their parents understanding of the potential implications of them being unmonitored. They aim to assist parents to feel empowered to guide their child in adopting protective behaviors and children to see social networking with their safety in mind.

Aspley is again hosting Japanese students this year in August/ September. Please find attached the relevant information.

SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS

Sparrows personalised shirts are here!

The much anticipated arrival of the Sparrows personalised shirts was met with excitement. At training many of the players were keen to try them on and test them out on the pitch! A big cheer goes to Sparrows off-field superstar Carolynne Hassall for her efforts in developing and following through on this idea. The Sparrows students are very grateful for the hours Carolynne has donated to painstakingly input all the data required to make this order successful.

All of the shirts came with an orange note about guidelines for wear and care of the garment. In the event that the note never made it home, here’s a quick reminder:

  • If worn to training, BRING A SCHOOL UNIFORM SHIRT TO CHANGE INTO for the school day.
  • The Aspley Sparrows shirt design represents the Aspley State School brand, but it is not part of the regular (daily) school uniform approved by the P&C Association. Personalised Aspley Sparrows shirts should only be worn for:
     - Sparrows soccer training
     - At relevant inter-school sports events (eg: Gala Day soccer, Eagles Challenge Cup)
     - On any other pre-approved occasion
  • Please treat as you would any other Aspley State School special uniform; only wear this shirt during relevant activities (and not outside of school hours/initiatives).
  • Care Instructions: DO NOT IRON. DO NOT TUMBLE DRY. WASH AND HANG ON LINE.

Every player is valuable

Wearing a personalised shirt can definitely make you feel like a soccer star but it’s no substitute for having a great attitude towards training and the game. Playing with the spirit of the Sparrows means commitment to the team and helping each other to shine. Every player is part of the Sparrows team whether you wear a personalised shirt or not; EVERY SPARROW COUNTS!

Sparrows in the Spotlight

This week: volunteer coach for the boys, Leigh-Ann Rohde

With a history of volunteering at Aspley State School many will know Leigh-Ann Rohde for her significant contribution to the Active School Travel program.

Leigh-Ann has supported the Sparrows program as a volunteer since the early days when its target was introducing girls to the sport. Leigh-Ann played a key role integrating the boys’ wing of the Sparrows into the program, helping to get their training off the ground and becoming Head Boys Coach.

With a wealth of on-field action in her resume through experience playing soccer for local clubs, Leigh-Ann brings her energy, skill and dedication to this volunteer position. Initially playing soccer for Nundah FC in 1996, Leigh-Ann later played with Newmarket FC and finally The Grange, adding a competition for the “Masters over 30 Women’s League” to her list of playing achievements.

A knee injury in 2010 forced Leigh-Ann to hang up her playing boots, but with her enduring spirit the undeterred mum of two Aspley SS boys took the opportunity to direct her enthusiasm and experience into soccer coaching, first at Pine Hills Kindy Soccer and currently in the Sparrows program.

They say the early bird catches the worm and this is certainly true for this Sparrows coach who feels she’s scored a goal every Thursday morning! Leigh-Ann says the early starts are worth it as she reflects on the value of seeing so many children turn up to school week after week at 7.30am to participate in the program: “It’s the perfect outlet for their energy before school starts”.

Leigh-Ann’s motivation to volunteer means she gets to see first-hand how much the players love getting out on the pitch to ‘have a go’.

The Sparrows are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated and passionate coach, so let’s hear it for our Sparrow in the Spotlight, Leigh-Ann Rohde, whose contribution makes a big difference to little Sparrows.

If Leigh-Ann’s story encourages you to lend a hand with Sparrows soccer training sessions, please see contacts below. Every contribution counts no matter how big or small.

P&C NEWS

Congratulations to Aspley Events (Tee Poh and Katie Flynn) and the team of volunteers for a very successful Hawaiian Disco. Thank you also to the teachers who helped make the evening a fun affair with the Mystery Teacher dance off.

Also, big thank you to Simon Pritchard (Building and Maintenance chair) for his organization of the working bee held recently. Through Simon's efforts, we scored an irrigation system from Bunnings, and outdoor paint from TAFE QLD. We had a small group of very dedicated volunteers who gave up a few hours of their Saturday morning and afternoon, with Simon and Jin staying all day! Hopefully you will notice the freshly painted walls near the Tennis courts, an irrigation system under the walkway near the year 1 classrooms, refreshed games on the grounds, trimmed trees and safe treads on the swimming pool stairs.

Helping the school doesn't always need a set time and sometimes you may be able to donate something that is easy. We thank the Barnett family for their donation of a metal shelf in the tuck-shop which makes our convener’s job safer.

Want to know if/how you can help, just ask or offer. It is that easy!

Term 2 is not over yet and we have the annual Sports Day Bake Stall & HART raffle prize to round out our events for this term. See below for how you can help.

If you have any feedback or questions about the P&C, please do not hesitate to contact Brenden, P&C President on 0412 405 462, or email pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au.

REMINDERS:

TUCKSHOP

  • There is Hot Chocolate available to purchase over the counter, and Sushi Tuesday is available every week. Keep an eye out on Flexi schools for meal deals as we head into Origin season.

QUEENSLAND MARITIME MUSEUM

Ahoy there, Me Hearties!

Pirates are taking over the
Maritime Museum
3 - 7 July 2017

The Queensland Maritime Museum at South Bank is proud to present “Pirates Week” during the Winter School Holidays. It happens each day from Monday 3 July to Friday 7 July 2017 from 10.00am to 2.30pm. The program is for both boys and girls, aged between 5 to 11 years. 5 and 6 year olds and children with special needs must be accompanied by an adult, whose entry is free.

Each day gets off to a great start with the “Pirates on the Diamantina II” pantomime where you get involved by cheering or booing the various characters. Following the show, children are placed in small groups with a guide and supported through nine different activities. It is a great chance for children to be outdoors and learn practical new skills in a fun environment.

Activities for the older group include learning about the big guns and cannons, communicating through flags, rowing a boat [on dry land], throwing a life line, the pirate lifestyle, raising a sail and contour mapping. For the 5 and 6 year olds, there is a separate program involving walking the plank, swabbing the deck, rowing, plus lots more. In both groups, each child will also build a toy Pirate Ship to take home. The day finishes on a high with a Treasure Hunt. Come along in fancy dress and be eligible to win a prize in the daily competition for the best Pirate costume. There are also prizes for the daily colouring competition.

The cost is $21.00 per child [5-10] if paid at time of booking, or $24 if paid on the day of the program. This includes a special pirate-themed lunch, fruit and drink. Adult entry is $7 and lunch rolls are available for adults at a cost of $7.

If you have special dietary requirements, please feel free to bring your own picnic lunch and we will adjust the price down to $18. See the website for lunch menu and special prices for multiple children attending from the same family, as well as further information for parents.

Registration opens on 1 June 2017 and places go quickly, so don’t delay. Booking is confirmed only when payment has been received. Come along and join the fun?

Challenge 2017 is an exciting two-day program of challenging activities designed for students from Prep to Year 8 who are seeking extension beyond the regular school curriculum. All workshops offered are fast-paced and rigorous, and involve challenging activities pitched at individual abilities rather than chronological age. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to step up to a challenge, to meet other children of like minds and to establish new friendships. The workshops are presented by leaders with a keen interest in gifted education—experts in their field—who design programs to stimulate the interests, abilities and curiosities of gifted children.

You must register to attend this event and cost is $77 for non-members
and $66 for QAGTC members.

Registrations close on 8th June.

Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made with late registrations.
