PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome back to school for term three. This term will be action packed and one of great learning and challenge.
Creative Generations: state schools on tour
Today fifty Aspley State School students who are members of the performing arts programs and six teachers went to QPAC to witness the culmination of five months of work by a cast and crew drawn from 127 state schools. Creative Generations is a kaleidoscope of colourful entertainment! The performance made us reflect on what a bright future we have in our state with the calibre of these young people in state schools. Thank you to Mrs Agnew for coordinating this excursion.
Congratulations to Ian and Luciella from Aspley State School who performed so capably in the choir. These students have been outstanding ambassadors for our school. A special thank you to Mrs McIntrye for her support of these students and her dedication to coordinate our students. We are looking forward to Aspley State School children participating in 2018.
School Priority to Improve Writing
At Aspley State School teachers support students to identify their learning goals in writing. Ask your children to articulate their writing goals and ask them how they are progressing to achieve their goal. Having a clearly defined writing goal is key to writing improvement. The year one students participated in BOOST to support writing development in term 2 and they can be proud of their great improvements and increased confidence.
Student / Parent / Teacher Meetings
Parents of Preparatory students are invited to attend student / parent / teacher meetings to discuss student learning progress on Wednesday 2 August or Thursday 3 August in the Prep S classroom. Mark this date/s in your calendar. Bookings will be taken in week 3.
Parents in Years 1-6 are invited to attend student / parent / teacher meetings to discuss student learning progress on Wednesday 23 August or Wednesday 6 September in the school hall. Mark this date/s in your calendar.
Aspley Speaks Out
In term 3 all students from year 5 are invited to participate in Aspley Speaks Out. This is an opportunity for students to write and deliver a speech. Finalists will compete on Wednesday 30 August. This is a wonderful event and exciting learning opportunity for students.
Aspley Art Affair
Students have begun to prepare for the Aspley Art Affair which is an exhibition of student and community artist works to be held in the school hall on Friday 20 October 2017. Students in each year level will engage in an arts experience depicting the theme of sustainability. Students will work with a professional guest artist to create an individual piece of work which they will keep after the exhibition. Students will also work on collaborative artworks which will be auctioned on the night. Students will be invoiced for $25.00 next week. This fee will cover the art lessons with the professional artist and the cost of their artwork which they will keep after the exhibition.
Local community artists are also invited to exhibit and sell their work at the Aspley Art Affair. So get creative within the theme of sustainability and exhibit your work in our school community Aspley Art Affair.
My special thank you to our resident artist Wendy for leading the Aspley Art Affair. Also thank you to the visiting artists.
All Australian Curriculum learning areas contribute to learning about sustainability which is a cross-curriculum priority. Learning about sustainability enables the Aspley State School students to work with ecological and human systems and to appreciate their interdependence. It promotes a contribution to the development of world views necessary for students to act and create a more socially and ecologically just world. It challenges students to consider sustainable futures and to design and take action that recognises projected future economic, social and environmental impacts. Students develop the understanding and skills necessary to act responsibly and persuade others to take action for sustainable futures.
Athletics
Congratulations to all the students who demonstrated strong skills in athletics in term 2. Kennedy house lead the competition with 1511 points and admirably Mitchell with 1479 points and Oxley with 1459 points. House Captains led their teams with pride and the fantastic cheering urged students on to be their best. Special acknowledgment to the students who achieved age champions.
Congratulations to the 45 students who were selected to represent Aspley State School at the North District Athletics Carnival to be held on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 July. It is important that all students who wish to represent the school return their permission forms and payment to the school office by Monday 17 July 2017.

Aspley Architecture
In term 2 at Aspley State School we completed the removal of asbestos flooring in the administration and library office. We completed the refurbishment of the sick bay and installed new joinery in the library office. Also completed was the removal of the asbestos ceiling in E Block. I wish to thank the year 2 teachers and students for relocating their classes in week 10 to accommodate the new reinstatement of the ceiling.
The central room in A block has been refurnished to include a collaboration space and meeting room.
After a lengthy process, the dental unit has been removed. I have engaged PDT Architects to complete a landscape design and scope of works for the early years play area, incorporating an outdoor learning area with tiered seating and bush tucker garden. The P & C Association have funded extensive drainage works to mitigate the water damage to this area. The new plan will incorporate a dry riverbed and alcoves for seating and outdoor learning spaces. The existing shade sails will support the main outdoor learning space.
In term 3 I will refurbish two classrooms to include new furniture and create learning spaces that are contemporary and flexible.
Teacher Study Tours in Term 3
In term three teachers will have the opportunity to go on a study tour to visit local Brisbane schools to learn more about inquiry based learning and the International Baccalaureate Program –Primary Years Program.

CURRICULUM NEWS
Aspley State School E-Library
The Australian Curriculum acknowledges the importance of using digital media as a tool for learning. We are delighted to introduce an e-library to our school website celebrating some of the learning our writers have produced. You can access these books by clicking on the curriculum tab located at the top of the school website page and clicking on any of the tabs beneath it. The e-library tab can be seen on the left hand side of the page. Simply click on the text you would like to read. Currently we have uploaded a cyclic story, "What Good Luck, What Bad Luck" in four instalments. This was written by a group of Year 1 students during Boost last term. Read all four chapters to see what happens to our heroine Susie. Our second text is a collection of Haiku poems by 4C. We look forward to adding more texts this semester!

Word building uses various literacy skills: phonemes, morphemes including affixes and plurals, spelling, word recognition, vocabulary and word knowledge.
Students can play as many times as they like, and the sum of the highest 50 game scores by at least five students from the same grade will be their school’s score for that year level.

Jump Rope for Heart
This year our jump off day for Jump Rope for Heart will be Friday 11 August (week 5). Students in years 1 to 6 will be practicing so they can participate on the day. We are asking that students gain sponsorships to raise funds for the Heart Foundation and in so doing will earn themselves great prizes. Sponsorship forms will be handed out in week 1 or you may prefer to take advantage of the online services which provide even greater prizes.
https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/jump-rope-for-heart/parents
to raise money online and gain even better prizes.
Flick your friends and family an email, asking them to sponsor your Jump Rope for Heart efforts. Last year we raised an amazing $5054 and our goal this year is match or better this total.
So get skipping, ask for some sponsors and have some fun whilst getting fit.
Thank you for your anticipated support.

With Artist Wendy
The Year 6 students are still passionately working towards completing their collage faces on canvas which represent their thoughts on sustainability and how it effects their future.
Year 1s have almost completed their wonderful Eco warrior portraits. This is a watercolour version of themselves in school uniform ready to rescue our native plants and animals. We have all read a fantastic book entitled Eco Warriors to the rescue, which will be donated to the library by one of our talented visiting artist, Miss Kym.
Preppies have completed their colourful pastel flower creations and learnt about the importance of flowers to our ongoing existence in this planet. They know all about the way pollen is spread by bees, butterflies and even bats! Just ask them!
Next up is year 5 about to start work on their version of the Great Barrier Reef and the importance of protecting our sea life and surrounding environments. We have a wonderful artist coming to offer the children an informed education session on this topic, sharing her expertise on colour and 3 D construction.

Naidoc Week 2017
This week, we celebrate Naidoc Week. The 2017 theme, “Our Languages Matter” celebrates the unique and diverse languages that our indigenous people use to maintain cultural identity. These languages provide the link to their land and water through story and song.
In the late eighteenth century, some 250 languages with several of their own dialects were used all over the continent. Unfortunately today, only around 120 of these languages exist and with elders passing on, the risk of further languages being lost is high.
Our students and teachers have celebrated Naidoc Week in their classrooms in order to show our support of our local and national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS

WELCOME MRS NAPIER TO THE MUSIC CLASSROOM
Mrs Macca will be taking leave on a Friday of each week commencing Week Two of Term Three to spend time with her young son Clancy. We welcome to our school Mrs Rosanna Napier, a wonderful music teacher who shall be taking on the Classroom Music Teacher role every Friday. EDUCATION QUEENSLAND SINGFEST 2017
The Aspley State School Senior and Boys Choral Members in Years 4 to Years 6 ONLY are invited to participate in the Education Queensland SingFest 2017. Senior and Boys Choralists will this week receive a parent information letter outlining the finer details of this exciting musical event.
SingFest is an annual massed choral music event for Education Queensland Primary School students. It features students from across the Metropolitan Region coming together to learn selected choral repertoire at school, then participate in a one-day workshop with a Guest Conductor, Mrs Justine Favell.
Mrs Justine Favell is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has pursued her interest in the specialized area of choral music. Justine is the Assistant Conductor for the Brisbane Chorale. Her association with these choirs has allowed her to work with many international conductors and watch many fine choirs whilst touring. Justine has been on the staff at the Queensland Conservatorium for many years and also works as the choral director at Hillbrook Anglican School, Ferny Hills Primary and Padua College. Justine Favell will be accompanied by Mrs Kylie Los, an incredible piano accompanist. Justine Favell will guide and inspire the children throughout the day to achieve their best at choral singing with a set repertoire, providing humour, enthusiasm and great fun, before presenting the choral works as a massed choir at a Twilight Concert.
Boys Choir members who choose to participate in Singfest will be required to attend Senior Choir rehearsals on a Wednesday 1.15pm – 2.00pm from Weeks 1 – Week 7 in Term Three to ensure they know the selected repertoire for this special performance. This repertoire will not be covered in Boys Choral rehearsals on a Tuesday morning. Thus, Boys participating in Singfest will have 2 rehearsals each week from weeks 1 – week 7 ONLY.
A reminder that participating students/parents are expected to return the Medical/Consent Form and the tear off slip below with the correct payment by Tuesday 15th August, 2017 to the school office.
The Senior and Boys Choral Ensembles have been working with Mrs McIntyre learning the repertoire in readiness for this exciting event. It is truly a wonderful opportunity for your child and Mrs Macca encourages everyone to participate in this memorable event.
EDUCATION QUEENSLAND – CREATIVE GENERATION
Luciella and Ian will this week participate in the Education Queensland Creative Generation Performances to be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre this coming Friday and Saturday participating in both day and night time performances. These two young students have been learning a lot of repertoire with special conductors for this special event and are both very excited to perform and share what they have achieved. We wish both Luciella and Ian the best of luck for this special event and we look forward to hearing all about your endeavours.

EARLY ACT CLUB
The Aspley State School Early act Club was established in 2015 with the support of Aspley Rotary Club members, Margaret Buchannan and Brian McIntyre.
The aim of the club is to promote student community service to benefit others within our school, local community and overseas.
Previous projects conducted by the club include; supporting The Smith Family Christmas Appeal, a book drive to support less fortunate students in neighbouring Pacific islands, and various other school-based activities.
This year the Early act Club is looking to support the charity organisation Our Rainbow House based in Zambia, Africa. Our goal is to raise $760 to sponsor a student to attend this school for a full year. This amount will cover all tuition fees and provide a child with two meals a day.
In order to raise funds, the Early act Club will be organising a free dress day on Friday 28 July (Week 3 Term 3). The theme for this day is to come to school dressed in all the colours of the rainbow. Students in free dress will be asked to donate a gold coin.
On Friday 28 July we hope to see everyone dressed in their brightest to support a child in need.
YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP
Just a reminder that all forms and documents for the Canberra Trip should have been completed and returned to the school office by 14th of July 2017.
These forms need to be collated and the information sent off immediately to our organisers in Canberra. Thank you for attending to this matter promptly.

Premier’s Reading Challenge.
There may have been some confusion when sheets were handed out, two types went home, one for school registered participants and one for individual participants. If you received the individual participants, please ignore the dates at the bottom. You may still use the form and return it to the class teacher, Library or office when complete. Additional forms will also be available from the office or library.
Premiers Reading Challenge Dates:
15 May Start Reading
25 August Stop Reading
25 August Return Student Forms to School for inclusion in Database.
October/November Certificates returned for awarding to students
I would encourage you to have your student set their own goal to the requirement for achieving a certificate or higher, as the Library is challenging all classes to set and achieve their reading goal. Have your child write their goal on their sheet on the banner at the top of the page.
Your students may read a wide range of books, but it is expected that competent readers will read books at their reading level. This is a challenge meant to enhance and improve students reading skills and rigour.
Suggested Reading lists for each level are below, and the library will have a display from these lists in the library for students to borrow.

Book Week: 18 - 25 August 2017.
This Year the theme is “Escape to Everywhere” the Book Character Parade will be held on the Monday of Book Week at assembly. This is a great opportunity for students to have a bit of fun and dress to the theme. They have plenty of time to “get Creative” and dress as the character they would like to ‘escape’ as. It would be great if students also carried the book their character is from.
Library Team.
Finally, we have had our first meeting. We only have a small team this year. We have arranged to have a training session every second Wednesday at Morning Tea to teach team member a few skills to enable them to become productive team members. Already they have been of invaluable help in getting some new resources into the Home Reading section.

P&C NEWS
WELCOME BACK TO TERM 3! At the beginning of the year, we asked every family to consider #1thing they could do to help the P&C support the school. Time is always appreciated but we understand it cannot always be given.
We start this term with a pure hand-in-your-pocket Fundraiser. The LOOSE CHANGE CHALLENGE is an opportunity for you to give up those loose coins and help the P&C fundraise to improve the outdoor spaces of the school. Many of you would have experienced walking along the path from the stairs at Maundrell Terrace, past the Early Years Playground, up to the classrooms. This area is often destroyed by heavy rainfall and it’s time to put a stop to this. Proper drainage is needed so that the students have a safe place to play all year round. You don’t need to dig deep – all those little coins will make a big difference to this area.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, this term sees an updated Tuckshop menu and pricing, not only to reflect smarter food choices to grow healthy minds and healthy bodies, but also to enable the P&C to continue providing an invaluable Tuckshop service to the school. The new menu is now live on Flexischools, and a copy available on the school website.
The only P&C Meeting for this term is being held on 18 JULY (next TUESDAY) at 7pm in the library. We welcome all members of the community to come along and contribute to the discussion and decision-making process. If you have any feedback or questions about the P&C, you’re welcome to contact Brenden, P&C President on 0412 405 462, or email pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au.
Are you on Facebook? Find the Aspley State School P&C Page and follow the link to help our school win a MOVIE NIGHT! Tag your friends and get them to like our school logo too!

The award-winning Sparrows soccer program spreads its wings!
Aspley State School’s award-winning Sparrows Soccer Program has become a very popular activity within our school community. The program currently supports the development of soccer abilities in over 100 students – both girls and boys, from Year 4 to 6 at Aspley State School.
Due to the ever-growing numbers of students wishing to join the Sparrows and to permit Year 3 students to also benefit from the program, from Term 4 onwards Sparrows training will be amended as follows:
Years 3 & 4 boys and girls – TUESDAY morning – 7.30-8.15am Sparrows training
School Facilitator: Mrs Elissa Molloy (Prep M)
Parent Coaches: Mr Andrew Revie, Mrs Cindy Le Vieux, Mr Brett Testa
(collectively, these are parents of students currently in years 1, 3, 4 & 5)
Years 5 & 6 boys and girls – THURSDAY morning – 7.30-8.15am Sparrows training
School Facilitator: Mr Kym Farrow (6F)
Parent Coaches: Mr Andrew Revie, Mrs Leigh-Ann Rohde, Mr Brett Testa (collectively, these are parents of students currently in years 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6)
Please return permission slips
Year 3 and (returning) 4 students wishing to participate in the Sparrows Soccer Program from Term 4 onwards need to return a signed permission slip to the school office before the end of Term 3.
The Sparrows Need You!!
The Aspley State School Sparrows Soccer Program is FREE to participants. It is a community-orientated initiative designed to get kids playing and enjoying soccer. It would not operate without the valued input of the teachers and parents who volunteer their own time each week to support it.
We are ALWAYS eager for additional help. If you would like to volunteer your time to support the Sparrows please follow the link to complete the Volunteer Expression of Interest form and/or contact parent volunteer program liaison Mrs Jodie McLagan on: 0403 186 609 or email: Jodie@ozrig.com.au
