Please take the time to read and understand the NAPLAN report for your child. Teachers use the report to direct their teaching and guide the learning experiences for students and groups of students. NAPLAN is just one of the many assessment tools that our school uses to indicate student learning progress.
Aspley Soccer Challenge
Congratulations to the students who represented Aspley State School in the challenge with Aspley State High School this week. Our students demonstrated stamina, strong ball skills and effective team work. Our girls team tied 2 goals all, with Aspley State High School. The boys team were defeated by Aspley State High School with a score of 4 to 2. The year 7 students demonstrated speed and strong ball skills. Congratulations to Charlie, Noah, Luciella, William B, India, Georgina, Jahrel and Sanuli who were awarded the Referee award for Best on Field. Our appreciation to the Geebung Returned Services League (RSL) for their support with bus transportation. Thank you to Mr Farrow and Miss Oliver who accompanied the children.
Open Eyes Social Media
Thank you to those parents who attended the recent Open Eyes Social Media presentation and community night. This presentation was valuable and enabled both students and parents/ carers to learn strategies to keep our young people safe online. The presenter detailed information about social media sites and game sites which are best not be accessed by young children. Participants were guided with strategies to assist families to navigate the web whilst not sharing personal information. Participants were provided tips to be self-managed and respectful when they use technology as a tool.
Aspley State School, through the Department of Education, has sophisticated website filters which reduce access to identified sites, from school. We teach students to be skilful users of the web. Student’s emails also have filters which support appropriate use of email as a tool for learning.

Australian Curriculum
It is parents, families and carers who have the most influence on their children. When families are actively involved in their children’s education, children usually enjoy school and achieve better results.
The Australian Curriculum website provides information for families and carers about their children and the Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend.
Download The Australian Curriculum: an overview for parents to learn about how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. There is also information about how schools can use the Australian Curriculum to support students' needs and interests, and links to further information.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The reading period for the 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge runs until Friday 25 August so keep reading everyone! We’d love the children from Aspley State School to help Queensland reach our state target of 2.5 million books read during the challenge.
Early Departure of Students
Parents / carers are reminded that if they require to collect children from school before the close of school, please provide a note to the class teacher to give advance notice, where possible. When you arrive at school parents / carers are to attend the office and obtain an early departure slip. Students will come to the office and then can depart with the parent /carer. Thank you for your cooperation with this school procedure which minimises disruptions to classes.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Year 5 Leadership Training update:
The Expression of Interest (EOI) Form for 2018 Senior Leader – Round 1 will be released to interested Year 5 students this Friday during the Leadership Training session.
The EOI and required written statement must be completed and returned to the Office no later than 3pm next Thursday 17 August 2017.
A reminder that only students endorsed as Senior Leaders during the Round 1 process will be eligible for the captaincy elections in November.
Please see attached the overview of the timelines for the remainder of the process.
BOOST update
Our current focus on writing for both Year 2 and Year 4 includes the development of pedagogical strategies that can be consistently applied across the school to support student learning. One example of this is the Hamburger Model for the teaching of paragraphing.
Student safety: Before School waiting area
Parents and students are reminded that before school, all students (including Prep) are required to wait at the Eastern Hall to ensure the safety and supervision of students from 8:15am.
Students and their parents waiting in an incorrect area will be asked to relocate to comply with this direction. Thank you for your cooperation.
Student safety: Waiting and pick-up areas – Maundrell Terrace and Hall drop-off zone
A reminder to students and parents of the expectations of all parties in the pick-up areas of the school.
- A reminder for parents to display your child’s surname on the driver’s side sun visor.
- The Hall Drop-off Zone and Maundrell Terrace zone are 2-minute standing areas, requiring the driver to stay in their vehicle and stay for 2-minutes only. To be fair to other users of these zones, you may be asked to move on if you overstay the time limit specified. Overstaying the time limit may result in a Council or Police infringement notice.
- Parents have been observed allowing unaccompanied students to walk across the Hall car park between the vehicles queued for the drop-off area. This is a serious safety issue and students may only transit the car park with parent/ guardian supervision and assistance.
- On Maundrell Terrace, parents have been observed crossing in an unsafe position (between the entry to the staff car park and the bus stop) with their student/s, instead of using the designated pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights. With the high volume of traffic using Maundrell Terrace in the afternoons, this behaviour poses an unacceptable level of risk to the health and safety of all road users.
Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Police Service keenly monitor the traffic flow around our school as well as driver- and pedestrian behaviour, as part of the Active School Travel program.
Due to the frequency and the seriousness of the behaviours by some members of the school community that have been observed recently, we have requested Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Police Service to increase their attendance and enforcement around the school. This is a proactive measure to prevent a major incident or accident occurring.
Illness
There have been a number of reported illnesses in the school lately. Students and teachers have suffered equally. This tends to put a strain on the relief pool for teachers and we are looking for your assistance. While we understand the pressures working parents face when children are sick, we respectfully ask that you keep your child away from school until they are well. This reduces the risk of spreading an illness.
MEET OUR STAFF
|
|
Origins I was born in Roma and spent my childhood weekends exploring my grandparents farm. I am the youngest of three girls, so I know how to reach my daily word quota! We made the move to Brisbane for high school and uni. I completed my rural placement in Calliope, before teaching in London and more recently, Cairns. After having our first baby last year, we returned to Brisbane to be closer to our families. What a beautiful place to return to! |
Origins I was a teacher in various secondary and primary schools for the Education Dept in South Australia for 11 years teaching instrumental music, IT and classroom. Moved to Brisbane in 2002 with my family. Initially I taught IT in a secondary school for a while before moving to a year 7 position at a private school. Prior to 2017 I have been working for a superannuation company (Financial advice/ Education) for 7 years. |
Hobbies I love relaxing by the pool with family and friends, cooking delicious food, travelling the world and exploring new places. |
Hobbies Being a taxi for my 3 teenage kids Used to play lots of sport and loved windsurfing Enjoy cycling and being walked by the family dog Playing music Camping |
Education Philosophy / Passion I believe in holistic education. I strive to instil a strong sense of self in each student that I have the pleasure of teaching. I grew up playing teachers and am living my career aspirations. I truly love coming to work and I aim to inspire and empower every child that walks through my door. The world needs their sunshine and it’s up to us to help them find their rays. |
Education Philosophy / Passion In primary school I still believe that all students need a strong foundation in the 3 R's - reading, writing, and arithmetic. With better access to an ever increasing amount of information I also consider that students need to be engaged in their learning and taught how to learn through effective questioning and analysis skills. To find a solution to a problem, one first needs to ask the right question. I'm also a firm believer that students need to learn and show consideration and respect for others. |
Prep Puppet Show
On Monday the 7th of August, Evergreen Children’s Theatre visited Aspley State School Prep. The children watched ‘Reef Experience’, a performance that explored the enchanting world of The Great Barrier Reef. The children met many interesting creatures that form part of this natural wonder and learnt about the importance of caring for this fragile environment.
Pictured are writing samples. Two prep students wrote about their experience of the Puppet show.
STUDENT ACHIEVMENTS
Cruz Craven Karate World Championships
Cruz began his Karate journey October 2014 when he became a member of GKR (Go-Kan-Ryu) international at their region 11 Albany Creek dojo.
Cruz quickly took a keen interest in the sport training every Monday afternoon. His white belt quickly graded to a yellow tip, then soon after graded to a yellow belt (9th kyu). Continuous demonstration of dedication and focus Cruz graded quickly through Orange Tip, Orange belt (7th kyu), and Green Belt(6th kyu).
On 30th of May 2016 Cruz competed in his first Karate tournament- Qld regional tournament where he won 2 bronze medals. In June 2016 Cruz graded to Blue belt (5th kyu). Excited to be exactly half way to black belt, Cruz's dedication increased stepping up and attending more training sessions. Training 3-4 times a week. On 31st July 2016 Cruz competed in the Region 11 tournament and won 2 bronze medals.
Cruz was asked to join the Qld nation squad. The squad meets every Sunday at Belmont for an intense 3 hour training session. This increased Cruz’s training to 5+ sessions a week. In school holidays this could easily be more than 7 training sessions per week.
On 4th of September 2016 Cruz competed in the Qld state titles winning 1 bronze medal and 1 silver medal. Placing in the top 4 in his age and grade division Cruz qualified to compete in the National Championships on 19th November 2016. Unfortunately for Cruz no medals were won, but a huge effort in coming 10th position for his division in Australia.
In January 2017, at 8 years old, Cruz graded to Red belt (4th kyu). On the 19 March 2017 a very exciting thing happened. Cruz competed in the Region 11 tournament where he won 1 Gold medal and 1 silver medal. Winning these medals qualified him to enter the GKR international World Cup. Which is only held every 2 years.
The GKR International World Cup 2017 was held on 4th-6th August at the Coomera indoor sports complex. Cruz competed in the division his grade along with 86 of the best 8-9 year old males from around Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand and the USA.
After going through to round 3 and after 3 hours of competition, Cruz was eliminated. Unfortunately Cruz didn't win any medals. But had a great time and it was an excellent experience.
Cruz is even more determined to achieve more goals and hope to qualify for the GKR International World Cup in 2019
This a photo of Cruz in his Australian representative jacket at the World Cup 5th August 2017.

EDUCATION QUEENSLAND SINGFEST 2017
The Aspley State School Senior and Boys Choral Members in Years 4 to Years 6 ONLY are invited to participate in the Education Queensland SingFest 2017. Senior and Boys Choralists have now received a parent information letter outlining the finer details of this exciting musical event. For a copy of this parent letter please refer to the Aspley school website.
SingFest is an annual massed choral music event for Education Queensland Primary School students. It features students from across the Metropolitan Region coming together to learn selected choral repertoire at school, then participate in a one-day workshop with a Guest Conductor, Mrs Justine Favell.
Mrs Justine Favell is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has pursued her interest in the specialized area of choral music. Justine is the Assistant Conductor for the Brisbane Chorale. Her association with these choirs has allowed her to work with many international conductors and watch many fine choirs whilst touring. Justine has been on the staff at the Queensland Conservatorium for many years and also works as the choral director at Hillbrook Anglican School, Ferny Hills Primary and Padua College. Justine Favell will be accompanied by Mrs Kylie Los, an incredible piano accompanist. Justine Favell will guide and inspire the children throughout the day to achieve their best at choral singing with a set repertoire, providing humour, enthusiasm and great fun, before presenting the choral works as a massed choir at a Twilight Concert.
Boys Choir members who choose to participate in Singfest will be required to attend Senior Choir rehearsals on a Wednesday 1.15pm – 2.00pm from Weeks 1 – Week 7 in Term Three to ensure they know the selected repertoire for this special performance. This repertoire will not be covered in Boys Choral rehearsals on a Tuesday morning. Thus, Boys participating in Singfest will have 2 rehearsals each week from weeks 1 – week 7 ONLY.
A reminder that participating students/parents are expected to return the Medical/Consent Form and the tear off slip below with the correct payment by Tuesday 15th August, 2017 to the school office.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RECRUITMENT PROCESS FOR 2017 - 2018
With Term 3 upon us, we are commencing the recruitment process for 2018.
It’s a fact that the majority of people who are literate in music learn it in a school setting, and we are extremely fortunate to provide music instruction through our school. If students were not part of our school music program, there is very little chance they would seek to develop their musical skills outside the school setting — and that would be detrimental to their human growth.
It is crucial that you are aware of the positive benefits of learning to play a musical instrument — and one year of study is certainly not enough to gain all of them. You see, being a musician trains your child’s mind for success in every aspect of their life. The executive function your child will develop over the next few years through music are transferable to every academic subject. Without instrumental music education as part of their day, your child will be missing out on some uniquely important life lessons and tools.
We hope that your child chooses to commence in our incredible Music Program in 2018. They deserve to explore their musical education and the wonderful benefits that come with it for their entire school life, if not beyond. It’s with this in mind that we can’t wait to see your child participate in band/orchestral program next year.
Aspley State School children in Year Three upwards are offered the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Children from Year Four upwards are offered the opportunity to learn woodwind, brass or percussion instruments through the school’s instrumental music program. PLEASE NOTE THAT CHILDREN CANNOT BE CONCURRENTLY ENROLLED IN BOTH THE STRING AND THE WOODWIND/BRASS/PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAMS.
The Recruitment Timeline below outlines the various steps that will be followed through Semester Two 2017 for our 2018 Instrumental Music intake. Parent Expression of Interest Information letters regarding participating in the 2018 Instrumental Music Programs will be coming home to our current Year 2 (string) and Year 3 (woodwind/brass/percussion) students in week 9 of Term Three.
Please take note of the recruitment timeline and procedure dates below, as testing/enrolment outside these dates if not permissible.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Jump Rope 2017
This Friday 11th August is our jump off day. Already we have raised $4455 on- line. Emmy is leading the charge with $1086, followed by Niko with $565 and Joshua with $460. Anishka and Will have raised between $350 and $400 each. Nine others have raised between $100 and $200.What a great effort! At this rate it looks like we will break our record. Well done to all those who have contributed so far to this great cause. For those who have not done so already there is still plenty of time to donate either online or cash donations. We ask that all contributions be in by Friday 18th August so we can distribute the great prizes as soon as possible.
Jump Rope Coordinators,
Elaine Dooley, Kendall Smith and Fiona Smith.
SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS
Sparrows get off to a flying start!
Cool winter mornings are no deterrent to the get up and go energy of the Sparrows committed to showing up every week for training. What a fantastic way to kick off the day and warm up for school. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations Thomas W (6F): Football School of Excellence
An Aspley State School student, and committed Sparrow, Thomas, has been accepted into Albany Creek High School’s Football School of Excellence Program. We wish Thomas every success for this wonderful opportunity, from 2018 onwards.
'Reboot’, Recycle, Reuse
It is mandatory that all participants in the Sparrows program wear soccer boots and shin guards to avoid injuring themselves and other players during training and competitions.
We all know how fast kids feet grow! Why buy new boots when you can recycle a donated pair – free of charge – at the Sparrows boot swap.
Jodie McLagan (volunteer program liaison) will be available at Sparrows training every Thursday this term between 7.30-7.45am to receive donated boots and find them a new foot to fit. If your little Sparrow could use an up-size boot, drop into the boot swap and pick up a pair. Drop off your old ones at the same time.
Plenty of boots are currently available, especially in smaller sizes (perfect for grade 3 students joining the program in term 4). Make the most of this great opportunity. Support the Sparrows ‘Reboot’. No boot shall be left without a foot to call home!
TOP TIP: Shin guards
are on clearance at some Kmart stores |
Help wanted
The Aspley State School Sparrows Soccer Program is free to participants. It is a community-orientated initiative designed to get kids playing and enjoying soccer. It would not operate without the valued input of the teachers and parents who volunteer their own time each week to support it.

Mrs Jodie McLagan on 0403 186 609 or email Jodie@ozrig.com.au
Please return permission slips
Year 3 and (returning) 4 students wishing to participate in the Sparrows Soccer Program from Term 4 onwards need to return a signed permission slip (link to form above) to the school office before the end of Term 3.
