PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Canberra Excursion
Last week 73 students and six teachers ventured to Canberra to undertake an education tour of the National Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. We witnessed some interesting events in the parliament. The students really enjoyed the snow and the many other attractions they were able to visit. At each venue our hosts commented on the beautiful manners and behaviour which students displayed. They also commented about the students’ detailed knowledge and understanding of civics, citizenship and general knowledge. Students are full of interesting accounts of their trip.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship Education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government pledged to contribute $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Program (PACER) towards those costs. The rebate is paid to the school on completion of the excursion. This rebate reduced the cost of the excursion to families by $60 per child and was factored in to the final invoice.
I would like to personally thank all the teachers for their commitment to the tour, by giving up two days of their family time, to attend. Special thank you to Mrs Wright for coordinating the tour to Canberra.
School Opinion Survey
The School Opinion Survey is undertaken each year to obtain opinion information from parents / caregivers, students and school staff to help schools identify what they do well, and how they can improve. This survey closes Friday 25th August 2017. Approximately four weeks ago, the eldest child in each family in the school was provided with a letter to pass on to parents that outlined the process to access the survey. We greatly appreciate your opinion through the completion of this survey. Thank you.
Aspley Speaks Out
Aspley Speaks Out is shaping up to be another exciting event on the school calendar. Recently, I enjoyed being a panellist for the Aspley Speaks Out Semi-finals. I was very proud of the quality oral presentations. Don’t miss the finals for Aspley Speaks Out to be held at the school hall on Wednesday 30 August 2017.
Staffing Update
Mrs Ruth Crosland has taken up the role of teacher in 5M until Mrs Mann is able to return next term. Mr Murphy will be taking 5R each Wednesday until the end of the year as Mrs Sheldon concludes her contract to support her family. We have a number of teachers on long service leave enjoying a European Summer. This includes Mr Thomas and Ms Pearce. Thank you to Mr Pentis for taking Mrs Pearce’s class in her absence.
With many children and staff effected by the flu in recent weeks Aspley State School have utilised a number of relief teachers at the school to try to minimise the disruption to learning.
Flu Season
The flu season is upon Brisbane! Qld Health indicated that there has been some 5 000 people diagnosed this week alone. If your child is unwell please keep them home from school and avoid the spread of this sickness. Please remind students to wash their hands regularly and use a tissue to cover their cough or sneeze.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to those parents/ carers who were able to attend Student / Parent / Teacher interviews on Wednesday night. There is another opportunity to attend on Wednesday 6 September 2017. (Preparatory students have already held their interviews earlier this term and alternate arrangements have been made for 4P and 5M).
Whilst you may make an appointment with your teacher at any time throughout the year, meetings in term one and term three are encouraged so you may discuss your child’s learning progress with their teacher/s.

The Round 1 Expression of Interest process has closed, with the Leadership Committee (staff) to assess all EOIs within the next week. Only those students endorsed by the Committee through the EOI will receive their Senior Leader Booklet within the next 7-10 days, for completion and submission prior to the school holidays.
Year 5 Volunteers
I would like to thank the following Year 5 student for their assistance with Assembly while Year 6 was in Canberra last week. I was impressed with their ability to follow instructions, overcome some nerves and speak with clear and firm voices. Congratulations and thank you to:
Abby B
Charlotte S
Dantes W
Yuiko K
Jordan H
It’s clear that there are plenty of enthusiastic Year 5 volunteers for leadership activities!!
Craigslea Performance
Thank you to Ms Jabs and Craigslea State High School for the wonderful performances we enjoyed last Thursday. The high levels of musical talent inspired our own instrumental music students. Thank you also to Ms Karen Zammit, Junior Secondary HOD, for the small gift of stationary that our students have been using daily.
Active School Travel
The Active School Travel committee met with Ms Lea Gamble from the Brisbane City Council last week to review the school’s program so far, and to transition into self-management at the end of the year. One point of clarification from the meeting concerned the areas that can be used for students when they are riding their bicycles to and from school. Unless otherwise signposted, students are able to use the footpath to ride their bikes. With this is mind, we would ask students to dismount at the prep buildings and walk their bikes up the hill. This is the busiest area of the school, particularly in the morning. Please see the link below from the Transport Department regarding bicycle use on footpaths.

CANBERRA TRIP
Below are two students’ thoughts of their Canberra tour experience:
Canberra trip 2017 – by Luciella 60.
A once in a life time experience. Take a look in on how our country is governed. Learn how we pay for things, how our currency has evolved and how the robots run the show. From Earthquake simulators to giant free fall slides. Our nation’s most interesting and important monuments. The next day takes place in a winter wonderland where only once in a while magic appears like bursts of water from a foundation water spurts turn to glass works as our last day approaches an artist’s hub for creativity and inspiration creating things out of the mind’s eye. Glass blowing turns to bag packing as we say goodbye to our Nation’s Capital.
Our Canberra Trip – by Krina 6O
Our trip to Canberra was fun packed with educational, interesting and fun things, including the Australian Dinosaur Museum where we learnt that one of the most common dinosaurs still living are birds. On Tuesday we went to the Australian Institute of Sport where we participated in extraordinary sports like sock wrestling and European Handball. Questacon was amazing, with the amazingly long and fast slide, games and science-based activities. We also visited the Royal Australian Mint, where all Australian or other currency coins get made and how can we forget the snow? Spending almost two hours in Perisher tobogganing or playing in the snow after the 5 hour bus trip! We also visited the High Court of Australia where we were informed the role of each of the 3 High Courts. The National Portrait Gallery, where mostly famous people or people who have done something great in the history of Australia have their portrait displayed. To complete the trip, we visited the Canberra Glassworks where we learnt all the different ways to shape glass and even how it's made, which looked really awesome. We made our own glass tiles which will get posted to Aspley in a couple of weeks. These were the some of the many activities we did in Canberra. In conclusion, we had an amazing time, learnt incredible things and had the best and funniest bus drivers who taught us a lot along the way. We thank everyone who attended and our families for letting us go on this incredible trip.

MEET OUR STAFF
Kate Turner 1T
Origins
I grew up with two brothers in a cherished (and very noisy) neighbourhood in Kallangur. I always looked up to my mum and wanted to be just like her – which lead me into the world of teaching! I began my teaching career in a small school in the Lockyer Valley before coming to Aspley.
Hobbies
Scuba diving! My happy place is the ocean. Any chance I can get, I’ll be out swimming with the sharks!
I also enjoy going rock climbing during the week and spending time with friends and family on weekends.
Educational Philosophy
I come to work every day hoping to inspire, enrich and enlighten every child who comes through my door not just to do their best, but to be the best version of themselves. My philosophy is understanding that each child brings a unique quality to the classroom. As teachers, we have to attend to that quality and bring things out of the children that they wouldn’t bring out in themselves.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RECRUITMENT PROCESS FOR 2017 - 2018
With Term 3 upon us, we are commencing the recruitment process for 2018.
It’s a fact that the majority of people who are literate in music learn it in a school setting, and we are extremely fortunate to provide music instruction through our school. If students were not part of our school music program, there is very little chance they would seek to develop their musical skills outside the school setting — and that would be detrimental to their human growth.
It is crucial that you are aware of the positive benefits of learning to play a musical instrument — and one year of study is certainly not enough to gain all of them. You see, being a musician trains your child’s mind for success in every aspect of their life. The executive function your child will develop over the next few years through music are transferable to every academic subject. Without instrumental music education as part of their day, your child will be missing out on some uniquely important life lessons and tools.
We hope that your child chooses to commence in our incredible Music Program in 2018. They deserve to explore their musical education and the wonderful benefits that come with it for their entire school life, if not beyond. It’s with this in mind that we can’t wait to see your child participate in band/orchestral program next year.
Aspley State School children in Year Three upwards are offered the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Children from Year Four upwards are offered the opportunity to learn woodwind, brass or percussion instruments through the school’s instrumental music program. PLEASE NOTE THAT CHILDREN CANNOT BE CONCURRENTLY ENROLLED IN BOTH THE STRING AND THE WOODWIND/BRASS/PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAMS.
The Recruitment Timeline below outlines the various steps that will be followed through Semester Two 2017 for our 2018 Instrumental Music intake. Parent Expression of Interest Information letters regarding participating in the 2018 Instrumental Music Programs will be coming home to our current Year 2 (string) and Year 3 (woodwind/brass/percussion) students in week 9 of Term Three.
Please take note of the recruitment timeline and procedure dates below, as testing/enrolment outside these dates if not permissible.

Book Week
Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, and Australian authors and illustrators. Aspley State School kicked off Book Week with a celebration of our favourite books through a character parade. Thanks to all the families for supporting this initiative by providing costumes and to those who were able to attend the assembly. There were classic characters, dating back to Jane Austen’s days, and totally modern heroes like Zac Power. We found a few Wallys and the ever popular characters from the Harry Potter series. Teachers and students loved showing the Aspley community their costumes and have enjoyed discussing their favourite books. We will build a photo display of these great costumes along with some writing samples in the library this week. In the meantime you may like to explore some of the titles below that were shortlisted for the CBCA’s Book of the Year Awards.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia established annual book awards from 1947 to foster a love of books, both fiction and non-fiction, and to promote quality literature. This year, Book Week’s theme is Escape to Everywhere. Mason Cooley says, “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are”. We want our students to experience the escape of a great book. Sharing a book at night with an adult is an enjoyable practice for any aged child. Thank you for reading with your child. You are helping build a love of literature and a thirst for knowledge.

SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS
Sensational Soccer Friendly
The Sparrows Soccer Program represented Aspley State School in a “Soccer Friendly” tournament hosted by Aspley State High School on 10 August. While yearning to take all grade 6 Sparrows participants, staff and coaching volunteers had the unenviable task of criteria-based selection of just one girls and one boys team. This proved a difficult task given all of the high-calibre, enthusiastic players that train weekly with great dedication.
The selected teams did Aspley State School proud, meeting the brief to work as a team and give their best to the competitive nature of the games. The real ‘win’ of the competition was observing commitment from every player to the spirit of the day; best ‘goals’ scored were for participation, gaining experience, playing safely and (importantly) having fun!
Girls competition: Gr 6 Sparrows “tied” Gr 7 High School students in a 2-2 draw
Girls’ volunteer coach, Andrew Revie, summed up the team’s extraordinary efforts given their lack of exposure to playing on full fields: “I could not have asked for more on their first full park game in a while.” Undaunted by the additional running required on a full size pitch or their Grade 7 opposition, these girls took it all their stride.
Demonstrating great control and composure in front of goal, Saskia scored the ‘Coach pick of the day’ as best on ground. Georgina ran tirelessly in the first-half, mirrored by Anaiya in the second who was unlucky not to score. Keely showed strength and determination as she held firm on the defence line and in the middle of the ground.
An abundance of willpower fuelled India, Faye and May; running non-stop, they relentlessly challenged the older girls, which was entertaining for spectators on the sideline! Combined with the efforts of Hayley and Luciella, who held the ball up well in the middle of the park and chased well when in defence, the opposition were kept on their toes.
The performance of the whole backline was commendable with Sierra reading the game well from centre-back. Sanuli and Krina were solid contributors, and Amelia had particularly good games with some great tackles and clearance kicks.

Boys competition: defeated but NOT deterred!
In her post-match wrap up, coach of the boys’ team, Leigh-Ann Rohde enthused that the boys “all played with heart and soul”, reflecting that they kept their form and played a great tournament against some real talent.
The second-half saw the boys secure a formidable defence line, supported by solid textbook passing and running the ball up, crossing in and firing awesome shots on goal.
A special mention to Will, Willem and Charlie for taking on the role of goal-keeper, with each of them playing well in and out of goal.

“Best on the Field” players awards presented to Aspley Sparrows
Many thanks to Aspley State High School for their welcome and hospitality in hosting the Soccer Friendly event.
The presentation of “Best on the Field” awards saw eight Aspley Sparrows players selected by the ASHS referees/coach. Recognition of a job well done, along with a gesture of small game balls, rewarded and encouraged the sportsmanship displayed by — Georgina, Sanuli, India and Luciella (from the girls’ squad) and Charlie, Jahrel, William B, and Noah (from the boys).
India, Georgina and Luciella – awarded best on field
Big shout out to Geebung RSL
Many thanks to Geebung Returned Services League (RSL) for their generous donation of the RSL mini-bus and driver, which enabled transport of Sparrows players to and from the ASHS Soccer Friendly. Your support is greatly appreciated.

If you have only just started catching the P&C News, you might be wondering where all the money that is fundraised goes. For more information, the P&C minutes on the school website is the best place to answer this question. In summary, though, the following are the key areas P&C fundraising has contributed towards in the past few years:
- Air-conditioning of all the classrooms
- Contributed towards the resurfacing of the netball courts
- fund Hall upgrades - new internal steps to sound and lighting box with built in trophy cabinet, upgrade the PA system, refurbishment of the hall kitchenette
- IT/computer/iPad upgrades to the server and ongoing replacement costs of maintaining technology within the school.
In addition, in 2017, the P&C have supported investigations into improving the outdoor learning spaces in the Early Years Playground area, as well as classroom refurbishments to take the teaching spaces into the future. If you would like to find out more, please come along to the next P&C Meeting on October 17th.
SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Please note, in the last newsletter, it was reported that the election for a parent representative would take place later this term. This is incorrect, and will take place at the next P&C Meeting. The School Council is a separate entity to the P&C Association – if you would like more information about the role of a parent representative on the School Council, please speak with Brenden McClennan (P&C President – email PandC@aspleyss.eq.edu.au) or the school principal.
LOST PROPERTY
As parents and carers, you work hard and invest in your children’s uniforms. While children will be children, can we please encourage you to check your children’s jumpers and hats to ensure they have brought home their own belongings? There are about 20+ jumpers in Lost Property (outside the uniform shop). If your children are missing items, please take a moment to check Lost Property.

CAMP AUSTRALIA
What we’ve been up to in the past fortnight!
The past fortnight the children have been playing and creating many things. Shout out to Lily T. one of the grade 1 children who has consistently been using items out of the recycling bins and shes been encouraging others to do so to. This past fortnight we’ve been aiming to do a lot of outdoor craft, a recent one we did was spray painting and the children loved it.
What we have planned for the next fortnight!
The Camp Australia foundation (Tcaf) is raising funds to support the Australia Literacy and Numeracy Foundation. The foundation aims to provide 1,000 Literacy packs to help Indigenous primary school aged children develop these skills. Each literacy pack costs $80.00 and Aspley State School OSHC is aiming to raise $260. For the fundraising Aspley Camp Australia OSHC are going to have a Guessing game, which involves a jar filled with stationary and other cool little gadgets. Children are to donate a dollar coin for every guess you may give ($1 = 1 Guess)
*Reminder*
Holiday club activity programs for September are currently available on the camp Australia website.
Parents can you please contact the service if your children are not attending for the afternoon or have been taken home as this is extremely important for the safety of the child to ensure we know how many children we have in our care.
Reminder: To please sign in/out you children when coming into the service, this is extremely important for the safety of the child to ensure we know how many children we have in our care.
Sustainability: Join Gem and the Camp Australia family in Going Green
On week 2 of this term some children had planted some seeds in little pots, the plants currently are sprouting and they are all looking healthy. Conor has taken these plants home so that they can get more sunlight.
