PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Aspley Art Affair

I invite all families to attend the Aspley Art Affair to be held this Friday at 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm in the hall. We are very grateful to the visiting artists who have worked with children to learn about the cross curricula theme of sustainability. A special thank you to Wendy Cumes-Rowell and Alicia Hollier for their direction of this special learning opportunity for children. The children have really enjoyed working with acclaimed professional artists: Kym Frame, Suzanne Schroder, Deb Nicholls, and Cielle Van Vuuren.

There will be up to 20 beautiful, collaborative art works to be auctioned on the night. Come along and view your child’s art work on display and enjoy a fun evening where we celebrate the brilliant work created by the children of Aspley State School. Thank you to the dedicated parents and staff who have been assisting with this exciting learning event and a special thanks to Woolworths Aspley for donating some of the food platters for the event.

Sun Safety

As we enjoy the warmer weather, I ask parents to ensure that children come to school with their broad-brimmed, school hat. If your child’s hat is in poor condition or disrepair, I ask that parents replace them so our children are wearing a school uniform that aptly reflects pride in themselves and Aspley State School.

Please prepare children for school by supporting them to apply sunscreen before they come to school. This is especially important on sporting or swimming days. Sunscreen is provided in each classroom for students to apply as required. If parents wish to provide sunscreen they may also do this. We encourage all in our community to be sun safe.

High School Orientation Day

The Orientation Day for year 6 students going to Craigslea State High School, Aspley State High School and Wavell State High School is to be held on Monday 4th December 2017. It provides an opportunity for students to experience high school and explore the learning opportunities that high school will provide in 2018. Parents will have received information about this event in their confirmation of enrolment pack from their respective school. It is a requirement to have enrolled your child in the school to attend the Orientation Day.

Investing For Success 2018

In 2018, $250 million will be allocated to Queensland state schools as part of the Investing for Success (I4S) program which commenced in 2014 as the Great Results Guarantee. State schools will use funding to support students to achieve improved outcomes at all levels of schooling.

In 2018 Aspley State School will receive $ 279 049 through the Investing for Success grant. Details of this is available below

https://det.qld.gov.au/programs-initiatives/education/investing-for-success

This grant will be used to continue to fund the employment of the two, part time, specialist science teachers in 2018. Student results in science evidence that this initiative has supported strong improvements for student learning in 2015-2017.

Aspley State School Representative Sports Uniform Hire in 2018

As requested by the P & C Association, in 2018 they will manage the hire for all representative sports uniforms. Representative sports uniforms will be hired from the uniform shop. A small hire fee will apply. A bond will be paid, and returned, when the sports uniform is returned clean, in good order and in a timely manner. This will support an improved service for families, the purchase of additional of uniforms and funds for the Parents and Citizens Association.

World Teacher’s Day

Every day, Queensland teachers are making a difference educating and inspiring young people across our state. World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks for the significant contributions they make in our classrooms and communities.

Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society. World Teachers' Day is held internationally on 5 October. As the day usually falls during school holidays, Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year.

In 2017, World Teachers' Day will be celebrated in Queensland on Friday 27 October 2017, during State Education Week. I invite you to tell your teacher that you appreciate their contribution to our learning community.

Following on from the Information night, 2018 prep students will be invited to attend an Orientation day. This year’s Orientation day will be on Wednesday 29 November from 9.00 – 10.30am. Year 2 – Mr Simpsons Class

Year 2 have been learning to write persuasive texts. Mia M did an outstanding job persuading an audience to change wet weather play arrangements. Very topical this week!

Written by Mia M Year 2K
Conclusion by 2K
Edited by Mr Simpson

I want a better play!

Why do we need to keep the same play when it rains? I surely think you should organise a better wet play because I only can describe this play with six letters b-o-r-i-n-g BORING!!! I seriously just think it is boring to sit on the dirty ground when it is wet weather and watch movies.

My first and most important reason is it is boring because we watch the same movies over and over again. I’ve watched all the movies already about 10 times so I obviously think we should change it into a time to DANCE!

I think on wet weather days we should dance at the hall because surely it’s healthier. We could learn everyday dance moves and it never will get old. Some dances expresses feelings and it solves everyday problems…how? It helps loosen up and rework your brain so it’s all fresh again.

With all these compelling and totally appropriate arguments you must now agree wet weather play needs a change. Let’s publish our thoughts in the newsletter, present to the P&C, organise a meeting with the principal, and announce it on assembly. Let’s ask the wider school community to come up with a new wet weather plan to stop the pain when it begins to rain.

The Earlyact group of children has decided that this term they wish to support the Windsor House which offers accommodation and assistance to homeless teenagers between 15 - 18 years. While staying at this accommodation, the teenagers are taught to cook and look after themselves.

To assist this very worthy charity, the Aspley Earlyact group asks families in the Aspley community to donate non-perishable goods that these teenagers could use. Some suggestions are tinned foods, fruit tubs, toiletries etc.

If you could send your contribution during weeks 4 or 5, it would be appreciated. A box will be placed in each classroom for your donations. At the end of Week 5, members of the Aspley Rotary Club will collect your donations and deliver to the Windsor House.

P&C NEWS

P&C News 16 October 2017

Dear School Community

As you may or may not know, the Aspley Parents’ & Citizens’ Association operate the Tuckshop and Uniform shop services. Jane Mulrooney has recently become the Tuckshop Manager and we would like to take the opportunity to introduce her to you all. Jane has extensive experience in running food businesses and is eager to help improve this service for our children and community. She is also very friendly and would love to hear from you.

Parent volunteers are crucial to the success of these services, especially the Tuckshop. Without volunteers, Jane will only have time to do the day to day tasks of making meals and cleaning. For us to make the most of Jane’s knowledge and skills, she needs time to source new ideas, look for best alternatives for suppliers, as well as many other tasks that are required. Volunteers are our most precious resource and are essential for the smooth operation of our services. They also allow us to provide a quality service at reasonable prices.

Being a volunteer is not all work either - there are lots of laughs and a good time to be had while getting the job done - and you will meet other parents too. As a Tuckshop volunteer we provide you with bottomless ‘cuppas’, and lunch from the menu. For those that are a bit unsure of what is involved, here is a run-down of times and what is done (training will be provided if required):

8:00am to 10:00am - Simple food handling tasks:

  • Buttering bread and making toasties
  • Making pikelets
  • Chopping salad and fruit items
  • Packaging snack items

10:00am to 11:00am AND 1:00pm to 2:00pm – Break times

  • Packing the food bags and placing in the boxes
  • Assisting the students in finding their lunches
  • Sale of frozen treats and other items over the counter
  • Clean up
  • The work is not confronting or hard. In fact, it could be viewed as an opportunity to get experience in a food preparation business as well.
  • Ideally, we would love to have a commitment to volunteer once a week – but once a fortnight is great, and once a month would be helpful as well. The commitment may be even for just one term. The important factor is if we know who can help, we can set up a roster.
  • We welcome ‘double acts’ as well – so if you and a friend would like to volunteer together – that would be fantastic.
  • Please let us know if you’d also like to help in the Uniform Shop.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our current volunteers, and would love for new faces to join our volunteer team. If you would like more information, please let us know.

Please email Tuckshop.AspleySS@gmail.com with

  1. Your name, phone number and email address.
  2. Preferred day/s
  3. Preferred times 8-9am; 9-10am; 10-11am; 12pm-1pm; 1pm-2pm

Should you have any feedback or questions – you can contact the P&C executive via the school, email PandC@aspleyss.eq.edu.au or contact Brenden (P&C President) on 0412 405 462, or via the Facebook page (AspleySSPandC).

UNIFORM SHOP

  • The Uniform Shop will be open Monday (with more days/hours during the busy periods). Flexsichools continues to be the most effective way to order Uniforms. Uniform orders can be delivered to your student’s classroom.
  • New Rugby Socks are available to purchase at the Tuckshop. $15 a pair, with the great Aspley colours and school lettering along the side.
  • If you would prefer to volunteer in the Uniform Shop 1 or 2 mornings per week, we would love to hear from you. Email Uniforms.AspleySS@gmail.com

SPARROWS SOCCER PROGRAM NEWS

‘Training Buddies’ take grade 3’s under their wings

Tuesday morning saw a big welcome to grade 3 students participating in the Aspley Sparrows Soccer Program. This initiative introduces younger students at Aspley State School to a popular activity not only within the school community, but globally, as participants experience the ‘world game’ and have fun learning new skills.

With the fledgling Sparrows eager to kick off, the ‘Training Buddies’ program also took flight. Senior Sparrows stepped up to support their younger counterparts and did a fine job. Many of these senior players have trained together every Thursday morning since grade 4, developing soccer friendships and a genuine ‘team’ bond. Imagine what these year 3 Sparrows will be capable of by grade 6!

Aspley Sparrows score a Brisbane Roar Coach

Many thanks to the School Chaplaincy Program for encouraging kids into sports and supporting the Aspley Sparrows Soccer Program. As a result of this assistance, the Sparrows program is able to welcome their newest members (grade 3 junior players) with an exciting opportunity to receive coaching development from Brisbane Roar Football Club. What a fantastic boost for beginner footballers!

‘Football development’ for year 3 Sparrows Program participants with a Brisbane Roar Coach will occur at training 7.30-8.15am on four dates:

  • Tuesday, 24th & 31st October
  • Tuesday, 7th & 14th November

We are holding a garage sale on 21st of October at 7am. Please see attached a flyer containing additional details of the event.
