PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Time flies when you are having fun learning! Students are busy and productive in their learning and it is wonderful to celebrate the success the students have achieved in their writing. Students have articulated writing goals and are working hard to achieve them and set new goals.

This week children enjoyed writing an 8 word story about Friendship. It is not as easy as you might think. We will publish their stories during the vacation on our digital display board for the community to enjoy! ‘

As the term continues it is important that every student attends each day at school. Every day counts! Learning at school continues each day and a culture of non-attendance is not acceptable, particularly in the last week of school when children will still be engaged in active learning.

International Baccalaureate -Primary Years Programme

Parents and school community members are invited to attend an information evening on at 7.00 – 8.30 pm on Wednesday 22 November 2017 at the school hall. This evening will give attendees the opportunity to learn more about the International Baccalaureate -Primary Years Program. Invited guest speakers will inform you about:

  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation
  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) Mission Statement
  • The Learner Profile
  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) Standards
  • The Benefits of International Baccalaureate (IB) for learners
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Australian Curriculum

I invite you to pre-read about the International Baccalaureate (IB) –Primary Years Programme at:

http://www.ibo.org/programmes/primary-years-programme/

Australian Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum is designed to help all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. Presented as a developmental sequence of learning from Foundation - Year 10, the Australian Curriculum describes to teachers, parents, students and others in the wider community what is to be taught and the quality of learning expected of young people as they progress through school.

The three-dimensional design of the Foundation – Year 10 Australian Curriculum recognises the importance of disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding alongside general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

Disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding are described in the eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Technologies and Languages. The latter four learning areas have been written to include multiple subjects, reflecting custom and practice in the discipline. In each learning area or subject, content descriptions specify what young people will learn, and achievement standards describe the depth of understanding and the sophistication of knowledge and skill expected of students at the end of each year level or band of years.

Read more about what your child is learning at:

Prep Orientation Evening

This week we welcomed many new families to our school community as their child is preparing to start school in 2018. Transition to school is an important consideration.

Things you can do to give your child confidence about starting school:

  • Encourage your child to write their name.
  • Practise getting ready, dressing, packing lunch, bag, hat and spare clothes.
  • Practise using a water bottle and managing a packed lunch, including opening containers and wrappers.
  • Label all belongings, including shoes!
  • Use shoes with Velcro fasteners until your child can manage laces.
  • Rehearse travel to school and walk them to their classroom so they are familiar with the school environment.
  • Consider to book into Camp Australia or another care provider, in case you need before / after / holiday school care. This is handy for the day you are caught in traffic or cannot leave work in time to collect your child on time.
  • Try to establish regular bedtime and keep later nights for the weekends or holidays.
  • Make a Flexischools Account for the on-line purchase of school uniforms and lunches.

https://www.flexischools.com.au/

  • Download the free QParents app. This portal allows you to securely access information about your child and to communicate directly with the school.
  • Discuss with your child the arrangements for pick up time.
  • When leaving your child on the first day, wish them a wonderful day, say good-bye and do not prolong this separation. There is Tissues and Tim Tams to welcome the Prep parents and new families to the school, in the school hall from 9.00 am – 9.45 am on the first day of school.

Swimming Carnival

Swimming lessons are providing a valuable opportunity for children to develop their skills, stamina and speed. At the end of term the children who have participated in swimming will receive a report that elaborates on the skills that they have demonstrated at swimming.

Students in years 3-6 are looking forward to the annual swimming carnival is on Tuesday 28th November commencing at 9.00 am. Please ensure that all children are prepared with their sports uniform, swimmers, hat, water bottle and have applied sunscreen. Please name all items.

Qld Association for Gifted and Talented Children Inc Conference

The Qld Association for Gifted and Talented Children Inc (QAGTC) will host their 26th State Conference on 16-17 March 2018 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Conference titled Identifying Gifts and Nurturing Talents includes presentations by François Gagne and Bronwyn MacLeod. The conference will focus on promoting and sharing solutions and strategies for parents faced with the task from raising gifted children as well as exciting, challenging curriculum and pedagogy originating in the gifted field and can be applied to all learning environments that lift achievement.

iPads - 2018 App List and Device Setup

The 2018 apps list for students in Years 4, 5 and 6 is now available for download from the school’s website.

https://aspleyss.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Subjectsandprograms/Pages/Ipad-Classes.aspx

If you are unable to download this document from the Aspley State School website, hard copies are available at the school office.

For students bringing their own iPad to school for the first time next year, please download the apps listed and follow the setup guidelines.

For students who have already brought an iPad to school, please check the app list for 2018. Most of the apps listed will already be downloaded onto your child’s iPad. Also, please read through the setup guidelines to help ensure a familiar, consistent device setup at school.

To assist us in our planning and resourcing for 2018, we ask that parents / carers complete the quick survey that has been sent home with the students and return to the school office.

Using positive words everyday

The Giving Tree is a story by Shel Silverstone that 2M read and enjoyed. The Giving Tree taught them that they shouldn’t take more from their friends than they give. You should always give before you take! This doesn’t mean gifts or objects. It means giving your company your kindness, your laughter and your happy memories.

2M have decided to create a ‘Giving Tree’ that will be located at the top of the spiral staircase. Each Year 2 class will have different coloured apples to write kind messages on. Messages to friends will be displayed on the ‘Giving Tree’.

2M would encourage everyone to read Giving Tree and practise using kind words and thoughts

Aspley Reading Club

We would like to congratulate the children who achieved their reading goals for this week. Well Done!

Jump Rope for Heart

On behalf of the Heart Foundation, I am writing to express our thanks to the students, families, friends and staff of Aspley State School for participating in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program this year. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Elaine Dooley, whose efforts in co-ordinating the program greatly contributed to its success.

Critical to the success of Jump Rope for Heart is the passion, motivation and commitment of teaching staff that co-ordinate the program within the school. The commitment of staff just like Elaine has a positive impact not only on the health of the students but also in the heart health of the broader community. Elaine has been a true heart health champion and should be commended for the time and dedication spent facilitating Jump Rope for Heart within your school. She has run Jump Rope for Heart at Aspley State School since 2008 making her one of our longest running coordinators!

Kind Regards,
