PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
As we come to the close of another year of learning at Aspley State School, we reflect on the great achievements of the students as they Dream, Believe, Create and Succeed. Students can leave the school being proud of their achievements and progress throughout the year. Students will be proud to bring home their student portfolios to show their families some of their learning artefacts and work samples.
Summative Reports
The Semester 2 Summative Reports will be sent home to parents / carers by email on Friday 8 December 2017. This report card details the academic and behaviour achievements for your child / children for Semester 2 2017.
Summer Reading
Holidays are often a busy and fun time. We encourage students to keep up their reading stamina by enjoying reading books from home or the local library. Brisbane City Council libraries' Summer Reading program combines reading and library activities to help kids experience the joy of reading over the school holiday break, as well as keeping them on track for the new school year.

Students still have access to Sunshine Classics On-line (Prep & ARC students), IXL, Literacy Planet and Mathletics for their holiday fun.
Same Day Notification of Absence
In 2008, Aspley State School will implement a new system to notify parents/ carers of a child’s unexplained absence. Currently, office staff telephone each family if there is an unexplained absence.
In 2018, Aspley State School will use a new software called IDAttend to send text messages to parents to notify them of the same day absence. This software will also facilitate text message for critical incidents or news flashes where it is relevant to make contact with parents expediently.
To enable this system to operate efficiently, I ask that parents / carers ensure that their mobile phone details are up to date. If you wish to update your details please email admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
Final Assembly
Our final assembly, held on Tuesday afternoon, was a celebration of another outstanding year of learning at Aspley State School and provided a fitting farewell to our Graduating Class of 2017 and the departing staff members.
The Leaders and Captains for 2017 were acknowledged, in order to pass on the leadership baton to the Captains and Senior Leaders of 2018.
Two students were awarded the prestigious Aspley Medallion for Academic Excellence:
- Tom P – High Distinction: ICAS Science and High Distinction: ICAS Spelling
- Charles S – High Distinction: ICAS Science and High Distinction: ICAS Digital Technologies
We bid farewell to the following departing staff members and thank them for their contribution to the school and our students:
- Ms Armstrong – transferred to Eatons Hill State School
- Mrs Laxton – to enjoy a well-earned retirement
- Miss Gallagher – transferred to Moranbah East State School
- Mr Farrow – transferred to Mt Nebo State School
The Assembly concluded with the farewell to the Graduating Class of 2017. The final rendition of the School Song was by far the loudest rendition in recent memory, as the students from Prep – Year 5 provided a fitting send-off to the Year 6 students as they exited the Hall.

P-3 Christmas Concert
It was a wonderfully festive event! Congratulations to all the participating students you did a fantastic job. We appreciate the hard work and effort that was put in over the last couple of months, and would like to thank the Footsteps dance company for choreographing the dances for each year level.

Step Up Day
Another successful step up day was completed on Wednesday the 6th of December. The students of Aspley had the opportunity to meet and greet their classroom teacher and their peers for 2018
The students who are new to the school also had the opportunity to spend the time with their 2018 class. The parents of our new students were impressed with organisation of the day and the friendly open nature of the students. Well done everyone!
ARC Mentors
What an excellent year of reading we’ve had in ARC. With the effort the children have made we have seen a lot of improvement.
- 4 students have moved up 10 levels or more
- 31 students have moved up 5 levels or more
- 23 students have moved up 1 or more levels
A massive thank you to the ARC mentors who consistently volunteered their time each week to help students read. A program such as ARC, relies on the commitment of dedicated students. Peer tutoring has a very positive effect on learning, confidence and social interaction. The ARC mentors were acknowledged with a certificate of appreciation and a Cold Rock voucher.
Year 6 Graduation
Thank you and congratulations to the Class of 2017 for their participation and performance at the Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Our Graduation Ceremony continues to stand above others and is a true celebration of the learning journey for students of Aspley State School.
A night such as this cannot occur without a coordinated approach. A sincere debt of gratitude to the range of staff involved, led by the Year 6 staff, and the parent volunteers involved in the set-up, pack-up and supper.

Happy holidays!
Thank you to all students, staff and the Aspley community for another great year of learning, laughs and celebration.
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, safe travels and look forward to an exciting and rewarding 2018.

Drama Club
This year we have had a wonderful time introducing many of our year 4 and 5 students to the world of drama. Meeting every Thursday, students took part in character and voice development, improvisations and different drama games. It has been a pleasure working with each of these students and we commend them on their dedication, willingness to give all tasks a go and their talent.
The Aspley Drama Club looks forward to working with many more students from years 5 and 6, parents and staff in 2018 to put on our very first musical. If you would like to be part of our production team please contact us at dramaclub@aspley.eq.edu.au.
We would like to wish all our Drama Club members a very merry Christmas and thank them for allowing us to share our love of drama with them.
