PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

The wet weather this week has been a welcome reprieve from the severe heat experienced in recent weeks. Some students were frustrated with wet grounds and indoor play this week, although this is a short inconvenience.

At Aspley State School we are very greatful that the Aspley State School Parents and Citizens Association and kind donations from local community members that have enabled air conditioned learning environments for all students and staff. The enormous benefit for students allows them to be cool, comfortable and concentrate on their learning.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is celebrated in Australia on Wednesday 21 March 2018. To celebrate Harmony Day at Aspley State School the students are invited to wear either, cultural dress, the colour orange, or, their school uniform to assembly to signify the respect for the many cultures that come together in our school community on Monday 19th March 2018.

Students will write a message to support Harmony Day and a paper chain of messages and orange balloons will be displayed on the school fence during the week. Students will work with resident Artist, Wendy, to paint a message of harmony and this will include the faces of children on the walls leading to the school office.

We ask for a gold coin donation on Monday 19th March 2018 to support the painting of a wall mural at the school to reflect the multicultural respect at Aspley State School.

International Baccalaureate –Primary Years Programme

During the last eighteen months, Aspley State School has explored the feasibility of the International Baccalaureate (IB)–Primary Years Programme (PYP). Teachers and some school council members have participated study tours to Brisbane schools to see the Primary Years Programme in action. The School Council and school staff have enjoyed a presentation by the Australian IB coordinator to explain the benefits of the Primary Years Programme. Late last year parents/ carers were invited to an information evening where a panel of speakers from Brisbane IB schools were able to provide information to parents.

In consultation with school staff and the Aspley State School Council a decision has been made to further progress the agenda to become a World IB School through the International Baccalaureate (IB) -Primary Years Programme by applying for candidacy with IB.

If Aspley State School is accepted as an IB candidate school we can then:

  • Work to achieve the goals of the IB mission statement:
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
  • Utilise the resources and network of the IB community;
  • Participate in staff professional development to teach the Australian Curriculum with a broad and balanced approach, where learning focuses on powerful organising ideas that have relevance across subject areas.
  • Use an IB Coach to support the school to support the pedagogical approach of inquiry based learning, through a transdisciplinary approach at the school
  • Work towards gaining accreditation as a World International Baccalaureate School by achieving the Standards and Practices of International Baccalaureate.

Please note that being a candidate school does not accredit Aspley State School as an International Baccalaureate School.

We are currently preparing a special edition newsletter which will be published early next term, containing the frequently asked questions and answers raised by parents/ carers. Throughout the coming months the achievements as a potential candidate school will be monitored and reviewed. During the next year we will invite feedback about the resources, pedagogy and progress towards achieving accreditation as a World IB school.

Information about the International Baccalaureate is available at the link below:

School Dress Code

It is a proud delight to see our students wear their school uniforms correctly each day.

Parents are reminded that the Aspley State School Dress Code outlines the responsibility for students to wear their school uniform. The uniform includes plain black shoes. I ask that as children grow and you purchase new shoes, it is consistent with this requirement.

For students with long hair, they are to tie back their hair. Hair ribbons are to be of the school colours and of a moderate size. Recently, some girls are wanting to wear large hair ribbons which are not appropriate for school and are more suitable for weekend wear.

Thank you to parents who are consistent in ensuring their children look smart and wear the appropriate school uniform each day.

Investing For Success

In 2018 Aspley State School will receive $279 049 to improve the learning outcomes for students at the school. These funds will support student learning through:

  • Additional Mathematics resources to teach the Australian Curriculum -$ 10 000.
  • Additional teacher aide hours (Prep-Year 3) to support improved early literacy development - $ 45 049.
  • Employment of two, part-time, science teachers (1.4 FTE) to provide specialist science lessons and support inquiry based methods to teaching science - $ 165 000.
  • Enhance school communications and links to community through effective school operations, and the use of the school website, newsletters and social media to increase parental and community engagement - $ 53 000.
  • Purchase Levelled Literacy Intervention materials and Benchmark Assessment Kit to support literacy development and BOOST Cycles of Support and Intervention for all students and also for the students who are markedly below their year level in reading - $6 000.

P & C Working Bee

We will be holding a three hour working bee to paint some outdoor concrete floor areas, games lines and characters on concrete, classroom interiors on Saturday 19th May 20018 at 1.00 pm – 4.30 pm and on Sunday 20 May 2018 at 8.30 am to 12.00 noon. Please consider if you can help at one of these sessions. Please email pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au if you can assist on this morning.

These photos are of our refurbished, year one, classrooms which were painted by parents in 2017.

The P & C Association, and the school, have jointly funded new furniture, the ceiling painting and a new teaching face in the classroom. Still to come to these rooms are: new student desks; chairs; and blinds!

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones brought to school by students are to be deposited at the school office on arrival to school grounds and collected at 3pm. Thank you for your co-operation.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Aspley Captains attend Halogen National Young Leaders Day.

On Friday 2 March 2018, the 20 Captains of Aspley State School attended the National Young Leaders Day at the Brisbane Convention Centre. One of the huge rooms had been turned into an arena, seating thousands of student leaders from many different schools. Our hosts were DJ Raff and Gemma. As you might guess, DJ Raff was a DJ. In the breaks, he was playing music so loud it made my chest vibrate. Gemma played games with the crowd and introduced the four guest speakers.

The first speaker was John Coutis. He moves around on a skateboard because when he was born, his legs did not form properly. He talked about what it was like to be bullied and how he “bully-proofed” himself. He shared two really good points. The first was to treat people the way you wish to be treated. The second was to be the best you can be. I found John very inspirational because he was so resilient and overcame the obstacles in his life.

He was followed by well-known author, Jack Heath. He gave us a motto “Leadership is GROSS”. This stands for Goals, Reason, Obstacle, Strategy and Start. This is his plan for writing great stories but it also works well for leadership. At the end of Jack’s presentation, Lauren and I were asked to thank him for speaking to us…on a giant screen in front of the entire audience of thousands! It was quite scary but exciting at the same time.

We also heard from Harrison Craig, a singer, and Holly Ferling, a cricketer. They both talked about not giving up and learning how to fail. Instead of being negative, you have to find as many positives as you can to embrace the scary and exciting, as you never know what you are capable of until you try.

Every Aspley Captain was given a gold pin, representing a halogen light. In these lights, multiple layers of hydrogen gas cause a chemical reaction creating one of the brightest and most effective forms of light. It is a daily reminder that leadership is about making your contribution and that together we can shine brightly.

I had a great time and learned a lot about how to be a good leader. I hope that attending the National Young Leaders Day will become an Aspley State School tradition for all captains in the future.

Having our 20 Captains attend the 2018 Halogen National Young Leaders Day conference added additional depth to the leadership development for our Captains.

Learning about leadership from credible real-world people that have a story to share provided great inspiration for the next generation of leaders, not only for the Aspley community but for the 2800 young Australians that attend last Monday.

Our students were a credit to the school and our community, through their thoughtful actions on the day and their reflections provided since the day. A display has been created in the Main Office foyer that includes students’ reflections from the day and their commitment to action as Captains in 2018.

The success of the Aspley Captains attending National Young Leaders Day in 2018 will provide the platform to engage in this way for years to come and create a new tradition for our leadership group.

Team Membership – Library, Tech and Hospitality teams

As outlined in the previous newsletter, students have been advised of the current opportunity to express their interest for the Library Team (Years 2-6), Tech Crew (Years 4-6) or Hospitality Team (Years 3-6).

The process for nominations will include an Expression of Interest (including a written piece), shortlisting by staff and may include an Interview to determine selection to these positions. In recent years, demand has far exceeded the number of positions available in each team, so many students may be unsuccessful in obtaining a position in a team for this year.

Parents/ carers and students are reminded that all Expressions of Interest close at 3pm next Friday 16 March 2018 to the Front Office. Late submission will not be accepted.

Easter Hat Parade

A note went home this week with information about the upcoming Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 29 March. If your child is not allowed to participate in this event, please let your child’s class teacher know so that the necessary arrangements can be made when the class is having rehearsals.

Ray White Aspley has invited us to be part of the colouring in competition again for Easter this year. Students need parent approval to enter so the sheet has been sent home to be completed. The closing date for this competition is COB Friday 23 March. Entries are to be placed in the box at the office or handed in to the class teacher on or by this date to be in the running for a prize.

The raffle in support of the Canberra trip for Year 6 students will be drawn at the Easter Hat Parade. Tickets are on sale outside the tuckshop in Wk9 and Wk 10.

Norm Wyndham, the councillor with Brisbane City Council has been very gracious and donated an Easter Basket to be raffled at the Easter Hat Parade for the Chaplaincy program at Aspley State School. Tickets will be on sale on the morning before the event. We would very much appreciate your support with this.

P-2 Fun Run

Students should have received a note regarding the P-2 Fun Run on Friday 23 March. This will be held on the School Oval at: 12 noon (Prep); 12.20pm (Year 1); 12.40pm (Year 2).

Harmony Day assembly – Monday 19 March

Harmony Day is celebrated on 21 March every year. It is organised by the Australian Government and is a day to celebrate our culturally diverse society. The Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Orange is the official Harmony Day colour and many people wear orange clothes or ribbons.

At Aspley State School we currently have students from 56 cultural backgrounds. To celebrate this diversity, we invite students, parents and teachers to either wear clothing that represents their culture or an orange shirt. Alternatively, students can wear orange ribbons.

Parents might want their children to change into their uniform after the Assembly or at First Break if they are more comfortable for the rest of the day.

During assembly we will be asking the students to identify themselves with the diverse cultural groups we have in the school. This information comes from enrolment data on One School about families.

Thank you for your support with this.

Tues 27/3

Wed 28/3

Reminder:

There is NO ARC on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 due to Year 5 mentors being on camp.

What we said on Assembly this week about ……..

  • Reading:

Why reading is important?

It not only helps at school but it is like holding a magic key which opens a lot of doors. It helps students find out more about things they are interested to learn about.

Practise makes perfect. The more they read, the better they will become.

As a Learner Reader, they need someone to read to them. When they get better at reading and become Beginner Readers, they are able to read little books by themselves with some help. Soon they become Fluent Readers and this will mean they can begin to read chapter books and eventually novels, newspapers and documents.

Students were told that their job is to keep practising their reading. They could borrow Home Readers, books from the School Library or the Council Library and use the Digital Resources purchased through the school to practise.

  • Writing:

They were reminded that reading helps them with their writing. The more they read, the more words (vocabulary) they will learn and this can be used in their writing.

  • Behaviour:

Our focus rule for this week is to Act Responsibly. Students were asked to avoid rough play and use the High Five strategies to walk away and report to an adult.

  • Pick up and Drop off area on Horn Road:

Students were reminded to be safe and wait behind the yellow safety line while waiting for the car to stop as some children were running alongside their car. Just a reminder to parents, if your children are usually late getting up to the waiting area, please delay your arrival to the pick-up zone as it is a 2 minute drop off and pick up only zone.

School Swimming

Last week our years 1 - 3 had a special lesson at the pool learning all about safety and survival. The Swim Solutions teachers taught the children how important it is to stay safe by keeping out of the water if someone else is in trouble and how to render help in an emergency by knowing how to “Yell, Throw and Go!”. The kids had lots of fun and learned some valuable new skills.

Our swimming program continues until the end of the term and will conclude with a very exciting Aqua Fun Day on Tuesday 27th March. There’ll be more information coming home about this soon.

Education Queensland Metropolitan Choral Honours Music Program

Congratulations to Year Six Senior Choralists Lucas, Ruby, Niamh, Charlotte, Emma R who have been accepted to attend the Education Queensland Metropolitan Choral Honours Music Program for 2018.

The Metropolitan Region Music Resource Centre is running a Choral Honours Program from Monday 19th March to Wednesday 21st at the Birralee Centre and the Old Museum Building. This three-day activity is to cater for advanced choral students and will give the accepted students the honour of participating in one of two different choirs and the opportunity to work with renowned Choral Conductors as well as a range of other musicians and accompanists.

Mrs McIntyre is so very proud of these choralists and wishes them all the very best of musical luck whilst attending this magnificent choral camp. We are looking forward to hearing about your musical adventures.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE UNIFORM

All students participating in Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Boys Choir, Senior String Orchestra, Junior Concert Band, Senior Concert band and Stage Band have now received a letter outlining the Aspley Performance Uniform for the 2018 school year. (Please note that continuing String/ Woodwind/Brass/Percussion and Choral students should have the necessary uniform requirements).

The Aspley Performance Uniform is worn by all performing ensembles at Aspley State School (excluding Beginner String students). Performing students are required to wear the following Aspley Performance Uniform – Long Black Dress Pants, Long Sleeved White Dress Shirt, Black Socks and Black Shoes. This performance uniform will enhance the appearance of our ensembles to look professional and polished for public performances and reflect the pride and high esteem held by our school for our talented musicians.

The Aspley Performance Uniform will be available for purchase through the Aspley Shop. Music uniforms need to be ordered soon by the Aspley Shop as it takes 4 weeks to manufacture the pants. The Aspley Shop has changed supplier this year to get an improved fit. To assist the shop in placing the correct order quantities, we are inviting families to place orders through the school shop. Please ensure that you use the new school shorts/skorts as a guide to the size of pants bearing in mind that the pants are formal and fitted but do have adjustable elastic tapes in the waist.

Both Shirts and Pants come in the following sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 & 16.

Once orders have been placed with the supplier and stock received, you will be able to purchase and pay via flexischools or over the counter as usual.

Families are asked to return the Music Performance Uniform Order Forms to the Aspley Shop by Friday 9th March 2018 at the latest. Failure to do so may lead to a shortage of stock. Uniforms will be reserved and sold to parents that have returned order forms before being made available to others.

Aspley State School Drama Club

After three days of auditioning and a couple of long evenings deliberating, the Aspley Drama Club lead by Mrs Vener, Mrs McIntyre and Mr Cooke, have begun rehearsals for its inaugural musical, Annie Jr.

We have been blown away by the talent we have here at Aspley and are thrilled to be working with these talented Year 5 and Year 6 students to present the musical 'Annie Jnr'. During the auditions each student showed bravery, talent and an honest willingness to give it a go. We could not have been prouder of these young students.

With week one of rehearsals completed students have demonstrated their commitment to developing their characters, listening to direction and working together to create magical theatrical moments.

For updates on important information regarding the Annie Jnr Production please read the Aspley State School fortnightly newsletter. Cast members and families need to ensure that they have access to The Drama Club Ed Studio on the Learning Place, as this will be our main avenue for communication through-out the production of this musical.

The prop committee is seeking the following items for the school production of Annie.

an old chair (swivel, if possible) and desk
old briefcase
two suitcases
old throws (suitable to be used as blankets)

As Annie is set in the 1930's we are looking for these items to be pre-loved and worn looking. If you are able to assist, please contact Mrs Naomi de Blonk Smith via e-mail.

ndebl1@eq.edu.au

The committee is happy to arrange collection of these items. Ideally we would love them as soon as possible so the children may incorporate them into their drama rehearsals.

The items will be returned following the completion of the Annie performances sometime after 4 August 2018.

Happy hunting and we thank you whole heartedly in advance. Looking forward to a magnificent Annie production!

If you would like to join the Annie Jnr Production team or help out in any way please send an email to (dramaclub@aspleyss.eq.edu.au) .

Mad Hair Day

On Friday, 16th March 2018 students will enjoy Mad Hair Day! Children are invited to wear their hair in weird and wonderful ways. For this privilege, children are asked to donate a gold coin. P&C News

As we head into Week 8, your P&C have been hard at work planning and organizing the biggest events of the year. If you were at Assembly, you would have received a sneak peak of the flyers that will be coming home to you. Remember, our flyers are also placed on the school website. Moving towards 2020, we will be aiming for 0 P&C paper notes in school bags – you will be able to access the flyers/notes from our school website/QSchools or via the newsletter, and volunteer through the SignUp.Com platform or via email (AspleyEvents@gmail.com).

But for now, there are 2 notes coming home: the first is an Events Flyer, with info for Term 1 and 2 activities: the Easter Bake Stall, P&C Communi-Tea, Movie Night and Mother’s Day Stall details. On the back of this is the P&C contact details, and some handy websites and apps that we recommend, to help you stay up to date with the happenings of our school. Keep this on your fridge or noticeboard.

The second note is a Volunteer Form for our upcoming events. On the back of this is a general Expression of Interest form – there are many ways you can help support your P&C, and this is just a small list. You have the option of completing both sides of this note and returning it to the office; or signing up online at each of the SignUp.com links (If you prefer, you can also just email us at AspleyEvents@gmail.com the same information). We ask each and every household to mark just #1thing. We will keep this information and get in touch as needed. Expressing your interest won’t commit you – but it lets us know what our community is interested in.

If you lose these notes, you can find them at the link below

TUCKSHOP NEWS

One of our regular volunteers will be leaving us soon and your Tuckshop really needs your help. If just two parents from each class volunteered, you would only have one shift for the entire term/possibly semester. If you can help, please email Tuckshop.AspleySS@gmail.com with your preferred FRIDAY (or just write “ANY” Friday and we can allocate you a spot where it’s most needed) and the class you are from.

A reminder to parents to tell children that they have a Tuckshop order (and which break) and remind them to come and collect them! (Years 1 to 6 – Prep orders go down to the classroom). Also, Children should only collect their own Tuckshop and not for someone else without asking Jane first.

P&C COMMUNI-TEA – THURSDAY 29th MARCH, 2018

Speaking of the Tuckshop, its operations (opening days and menu) will be on the agenda at our P&C Communi-Tea, Thursday 29th March, 10.30am to 11.30am. We invite all members of our community who would like to give us feedback about the Tuckshop to attend, or email AspleyPC@gmail.com with your thoughts if you cannot make it. The Communi-Tea will also be an opportunity to ask any questions and help us plan our future. Meet in the OSHC Room (Camp Australia).

Please mark the Volunteer Form of your preferred days to attend a Communi-Tea and we’ll do our best to make/vary our meeting times throughout the year, so everyone has the opportunity to attend at least one meeting.
