PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Harmony Day
This week the children at Aspley State School celebrated Harmony Day. Harmony Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate multi-culturalism based, on the successful integration of migrants, into our community. It is an opportunity for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common.
At Aspley State School families identify 54 cultural groups who are proudly represented in our community. On Monday, students were invited to dress in cultural dress and share their stories with their friends. With great pride, students paraded in their stunning costumes, whilst the student leaders displayed the flags from each country represented at our school.

Cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of the school. An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our nation’s history and our bright future.
Students from Year 6 have worked with Artist Wendy to complete a bright welcome to the school in their art work, We all smile in the same language! It is wonderful to see the smiles on students and visitors to the school that this art work evokes as they enter the school office.
Water Fun Day
The students in Years 1-3 will enjoy a Water Fun Day on Tuesday 27th March 2018 to celebrate the conclusion of their swimming lessons.
The Water Fun Day will include water and land based activities including: freestyle relay, sponge relay, obstacle course and fill the bucket relay.
At the Water Fun Day students will be required to wear their swimmers, sun shirt, swimming cap and a hat. Students will also need to bring thongs (to wear just for this session) to protect their feet as they move from one activity area to another.
Students will be identified to join a group on this day, indicated by a letter /number written on their hand. This identification is vital to identify student groupings and indicates their water skill level which supports students to participate in activities at an appropriate proficiency. Parents are not to move children from their assigned group for this event. Parents are welcome to come along and watch the fun!
Water Fun Day Schedule -Tuesday 27th March 2018
Timetable
Year 1: 9.15am – 10.30am
Year 2: 10.45am – 12.15pm
Year 3: 12.30pm – 2.00pm
Staff Update
This term our school farewells Mrs Liz Abbey, 6DA, as she retires. Liz has been a dedicated teacher at our school for the last 22 years of her 26 year career! We are ever grateful to Mrs Abbey, for her strength to ensure that every child in her class succeeds. Mrs Abbey has a special warmth for the children and will be sadly missed.
We farewell Mrs Elaine Dooley, 6DA, as she takes leave with a view to retirement. Mrs Dooley is an excellent teacher who has served our school community for 14 years of her 31 years of service with the Department of Education. Mrs Dooley has been dedicated to support every student and has been a champion for Jump Rope for Heart, International Study Tour visits and the upper school leadership agenda. Mrs Dooley is looking forward to new travels and spending time with her family.
Mrs Katrina Mann-Darlington will take on the role of class teacher for Year 6DA. Mrs Mann-Darlington is currently at our school and has previously taught Year 5 in Semester 1 2017 and in the Student Support Team in Term 4 2017 and Term 1 2018.
Mrs Hope Francis is taking leave and will retire next semester. Mrs Francis has been the teacher-librarian at Aspley State School since 1989. Mrs Francis is the friendly face at the library assisting students to find that interesting book, facilitating research and mentoring the library monitors. Mrs Francis has organised the ICAS Competitions for students and has championed ICT and robotics at Aspley State School. Mrs Francis is an active learner herself and has volunteered to help a few hours a week in the library even after her retirement! Thankyou Mrs Francis!
Mrs Linda Hamilton will take up the role to manage the school resources and support teachers to cooperatively plan and deliver the Australian Curriculum in the library.
From Term Two, Mr Brendan Smith, Deputy Principal, will take up an opportunity to be the acting Head of School – Primary at Kawana Waters State College on the Sunshine Coast. Mr Smith has been an instrumental part of the fabric of the school during the last 5 years. We wish him every success as he leaves us to take up a new role as Principal. Mr Smith has been a dedicated school leader and has led the upper school students. Mr Smith has worked closely with teachers and parents, led the student leadership processes, and has been instrumental in BOOST, a high yield strategy for strengthening student literacy. A recruitment process is currently underway for an Acting Deputy Principal to temporarily fill the position behind Mr Smith.
A special assembly will be held on Monday 26th March to farewell these staff members. All parents and carers are welcome.
Cross Country – Postponed Due to Wet Weather
Due to the recent wet weather the school cross country event will now be held on Wednesday 28 March 2018.
Students from years P- 2 will enjoy their cross country race at school next Wednesday, after first lunch break, commencing at 12pm on the school oval.
Students from years 3-6 will come to school for roll marking and then walk with their class teacher to Ben Lomond Park. Students are to come prepared with their house coloured t-shirt, shorts, hat and water bottle. It would be appropriate to bring a small towel to sit on, as the grounds may still be damp. It is advisable that children bring a change of clothes (School uniform) in their bag as they may get wet from a potentially soggy cross country track. Parents / carers are invited to come along and cheer on the athletes!
Kaboom!
On 26th May 2018 all students (P-6 ) will have the opportunity to participate in the hands-on incursion Kaboom. Kaboom provides a demonstration of musical creation and students will participate in percussion as a form of creative expression. The cost for this incursion is $6.00 per student.
Early Years Playground Update
Aspley State School has been working towards re-establishing the early year’s playground located near Maundrell Terrace in the North-East section of the campus. The existing playground was significantly damaged by water in 2016 and in 2017 the cyclone forced the closure of the area due to the eroded soft fall and eroded footings of the playground.
The goal is to re-establish the area with a new playground and an outdoor learning environment, with preliminary work over the last eighteen months including:
Stage One: the removal of the health unit; the engagement of a landscape architect; and, the survey of the area. Significant works have also been completed on the campus to install overland drainage to mitigate the effects of the water flow in this area.
Stage Two has achieved: a playground design; an assessment from an arborist about the viability of an existing tree; and, the preparation of the tender for the landscape design work and earthworks.
Works to be completed in Stage Three will be: the site preparation works, including levelling the new play area; the installation of the new early years' playground and soft fall and, planting of the adjacent garden/s. (The project may include a shade sail if funding permits.)
Stage Four will be the future construction of outdoor seating and learning area utilising the existing sandstone blocks and additional landscape design work.
To date the school has expended approximately $31 000 and the Parents and Citizens Association has expended approx. $16 000. The P & C Association has generously committed another $40 000 to apply to stage three of the project in Semester 2 2018.
Aspley State School has submitted an application to the community Gambling Benefit Fund for $35 000 towards the cost of the playground. In the coming months we will be advised if this application is successful. These funds would greatly enable this worthy, long awaited project.

Year 5 Camp
Students from year 5 attended an action packed outdoor adventure camp at Tyalgum Ridge Retreat from Monday 19 March – Wednesday 21 March 2018.
The students and staff have returned from camp with many stories of their adventures, including the following Camp Review by Mia (5W):
Two buses filled with excited children travelled to Tyalgum Ridge Retreat. I was on Bus One and ready to learn new skills, develop confidence, make new friends and strengthen my leadership skills.
To develop confidence, we completed high ropes (which was amazing) and we went on a waterfall walk (which was super muddy and slippery.) To make new friends, we were in activity groups with people we do not normally play with. To learn leadership skills, we participated in group initiatives which involved many leadership games. We also learnt that getting other peoples’ ideas involved making everyone happy within the group.
The food at Tyalgum Ridge was great; all the delicious breakfast, lunch, dinners and desserts were superb. I also think everyone next time should slow up on orange cordial or everyone will need the toilet! The staff at Tyalgum Ridge were really fun, active and encouraging.
The best part of camp was….well….everything, I cannot decide. The scenery was the best: the grass was lush and green, the trees were growing tall and the smell of fresh air was beautiful. I think Year Five camp was the best by far!
A Camp cannot operate without dedicated staff who attend, leaving their own families behind in the interests of our students enjoying this opportunity to grow. We pay a significant debt of gratitude to the following staff members who attended Year 5 Camp 2018: Mrs Francis, Mrs Wright, Mr Schmidt, Mr Murphy and at very short notice, Mrs Hamilton, who attended in Mrs Vener’s place as she was unwell to attend. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Author Phil Kettle’s visit
The students from Year 2 – Year 5 enjoyed their session with Phil Kettle, author of Macy and Too Cool books. He has kindly donated some of his books to the school library. These books will be ready for borrowing soon.
What we said on Assembly
This week on Assembly we celebrated our cultural diversity. It was wonderful to see the children wearing their cultural attire for the morning.
We identified 54 different cultures that represent Aspley State School. The wall depicting our cultural diversity outside the office has a simple but effective message: We all smile in the same language. Let’s continue to foster harmony at our school by using our lovely smiles.

Thank you to the Theidman family for their contribution to the dress up activity in the Prep Play Area.

Update from Mr Smith
As teachers, the expectations we have for our students is that they are lifelong learners – meaning that they are always open to opportunities to learn more about themselves, their abilities and their aspirations for the future.
As teachers, we have the same expectations for ourselves. We are lifelong learners.
An opportunity has arisen to take the next step in my professional learning as an aspirant Principal. I have accepted a temporary appointment as the Head of Campus – Primary at Kawana Waters State College on the Sunshine Coast, commencing in Term 2 for a period of 6 months with the possibility of extension.
I am, and will continue to be, a lifelong learner, and will take many fond memories, knowledge and experiences from Aspley into the new role.
Whilst sad that I am departing Aspley for now, I am immensely proud of this school - it’s students, staff, community, high achievement, its future direction and most of all, my part in its rich history.
To quote one of our Aspley graduation songs – “this is not goodbye, it’s ‘til we meet again”.
Mr Smith
Student Absences
NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.
The existing school absence line, email absence address and QParents are still functioning.
We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.
Curriculum News
Prep Puppet Show
On Tuesday the 6th of March Evergreen Children’s Theatre visited the preps at Aspley State School. The children went on a “journey” through the rainforest where they met a myriad of creatures, authentic in name, colour and behaviour. From Pademelons to scrub turkeys and many beautiful birds, the children learnt about these animals' lives and how our behaviour can impact on their habitat.
Thank you Kevin for once again presenting such an informative and mesmerising performance.

Harmony Day in 2S
Students in 2S embraced cultural diversity on Monday 19th March. It was fantastic to see the class engaging in this wonderful day. “We all smile in the same language”
St Patricks Day in 1N
Students in 1N designed and labelled traps to catch leprechauns for St Patricks Day. They wrote stories about who in their life is worth more than gold. They were not lucky enough to catch a leprechaun this time, however I do believe he might have left behind some gold coins in the traps!

Education Queensland Metropolitan Choral Honours Music Program
Congratulations to our Year Six Senior Choralists Lucas, Ruby, Niamh, Charlotte and Emma R on their attendance at the Education Queensland Metropolitan Choral Honours Music Program held this week.
Mrs McIntyre is so very proud of these five young choralists who have participated in this three-day activity catering for advanced choral students. This camp gave the accepted students the honour of participating in one of two different choirs and the opportunity to work with renowned Choral Conductors as well as a range of other musicians and accompanists.
Below is a recount of the choralists experiences had at this amazing camp:
What an experience!
I have to admit, I started the week a bit nervous and sceptical of what the Metropolitan Choral Program would be like. However, I ended it feeling so lucky to have been chosen to take part in this Music Program.
The first 2 days were spent at the Birralee Centre where we learnt our new songs and also met our fellow choir members and teachers. There were several choirs, Boys, Girls and Combined. The songs for the combined choir were Nishta Banja (a song in another language); The Earth is in Trouble and Gloria. We were then put into groups of Soprano 2nd Soprano and Alto voice groups. These groups depended on what pitch we sung at. All the students who attended from Aspley State School were placed in the Soprano group.
The final day was spent at the Old Museum. This was such a blast. We rehearsed our songs, and worked out our stage positioning. We even learnt a bit about the old Museum and its history. That night we then performed the songs we had been taught that last 3 days in front of an audience of 300 people.
Thank you so much for allowing me to attend this program. It was definitely an experience I was grateful to attend and will remember for years to come.

Library News
IN CLASS:
This Term, Prep classes have been learning the Library Rules working on ‘Whole Body Listening’ and studying Author/Illustrator Pamela Allen.
Students have been looking at her illustration style and how she often likes to include a little joke in her stories. Finally, each student is voting for their favourite story and creating a group graph to show the results.
Year 1 have been also concentrating on their listening skills and comparing the illustration styles of different Illustrators. They have also been using the illustrations on the cover to predict who the characters are, what might happen in the story and where the story takes place. After the story we then look back to see how well we predicted the story events.
The classes in Year 1 have also been working on alphabetical order to first and second letter.
WHAT’S NEW
The Library staff and volunteers have been working hard this term to get out new Home Readers, for Year 2 classes. These should be available from the beginning of next term.

Sparrows Soccer
As the Sparrows players run on to the oval, it is evident the pure love each student has for the game, the joy they share in spending time with good friends and the pure fact that their fitness is tested within the 45 minute training session. Soccer is a favourite sport in our Aspley school community and a total of 75 boys and girls from Year 4-6 enjoy the early morning start each Thursday. For the program to be a success, we rely on the coaches and volunteers who happily attend each week with enthusiasm, passion and patience. There is no ‘I’ in team, but we sure are glad there is ‘u’ in our volunteers!
Finally, we would like to wish our Year 6 players, who will represent our school at The Eagles Challenge Cup at Aspley State High School on the 29th of March, all the very best. Play strong, encourage team work, show good sportsmanship and participate with our Sparrows motto in mind, “SWIFT. SPIRITED. SOCIAL.”

WRITE YOUR CHILD’S NAME, CLASS AND DRINK CHOICE (Water, Juice, Milk) with PAYMENT in an envelope and return to the OFFICE by TUESDAY 12pm. Orders will be delivered to prep classrooms and children in Years 1 to 6 can collect their orders from the Tuckshop and choose their Sipaah Straw Flavour (if they have opted for Milk).
EASTER PARADE BAKE STALL
Students and staff are also invited to come and purchase a treat from the Easter Parade Bake Stall – from 8am.
P&C COMMUNI-TEA – THURSDAY 29th MARCH 2018
Speaking of the Tuckshop, its operations (opening days and menu) will be on the agenda at our P&C Communi-Tea, Thursday 29th March, 10.30am to 11.30am. We invite all members of our community who would like to give us feedback about the Tuckshop to attend, or email AspleyPC@gmail.com with your thoughts if you cannot make it. The Communi-Tea will also be an opportunity to ask any questions and help us plan our future. Meet in the OSHC Room (Camp Australia).
Please mark the Volunteer Form of your preferred days to attend a Communi-Tea and we’ll do our best to make/vary our meeting times throughout the year, so everyone has the opportunity to attend at least one meeting.
