PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome back to school after a refreshing Easter break. The children and staff have been buzzing with fabulous holiday stories and tales of camping, boating and day trip adventures and news of the Commonwealth Games. As Principal, I have been full of stories of my self-funded trip to attend a World International Baccalaureate Heads Conference in Singapore where I was able to interact with some of the 1800 school leaders from across the world to discuss education, curriculum and the changing landscape of education!
Term 2 is action packed with our school Movie Night, Anzac Day Assembly, Gala Sports days, Maths Challenge Day, Kaboom percussion incursion, open days, Band Blitz, ICAS Assessments, NAPLAN (Years 3 & 5), Track and Field Carnival, School Photos, Life Education Program, excursions to Aladdin (QPAC) and the Kumbortcho excursions (Yr 6) to name just a few events!
I hope to see many students and parents attend the movie night tonight. The screening of Richard the Stork is greatly anticipated! Food will be on sale from 5.30 pm. Come along and support the P & C Association and enjoy a fun movie and snacks at the school oval. If rain is ensuing, we will screen the movie in the hall. So pack a chair and a raincoat and have some fun!
The Drama Club students are well into their rehearsal schedule for the up-coming Musical Annie Junior. I thank the dedicated team of teachers and parents who are enabling this wonderful opportunity for our students.
Congratulations to the Sparrows Soccer students who were competitive to win the Eagle’s Cup in the last week of Term one. Thank you to the teachers and parents who make Sparrows possible each Thursday for the students who have a passion for soccer.
The second round of student leadership has begun. The eligible students will receive their student accreditation booklets today. Students have two weeks to complete the booklets and return this to their class teacher.
The Aspley Way was demonstrated this week with the kind caring actions of some parents to support others. These caring qualities is what makes our school a vibrant and caring community.
Parents mark the 21 & 22 June on your calendar as the Aspley State School Track and Field Carnival days. Students are training for these events and are always wanting to do their best and earn points for their sports house!
BOOST is a cycle of intense teaching to provide a high yield and improvement for all students. BOOST commenced this week with the BOOST teaching team focused on improving Year one students in the area of guided reading and Year 6 students in the area of reciprocal reading. If you are a parent volunteer who would like to assist, BOOST operates each Tues-Friday in the first session. Please contact Mr Greg Thomas or a class teacher of year 1 or year 6 if you can assist. Regular volunteers are greatly appreciated.
As I visited classrooms this week I was impressed with the year one student’s ability to read music and perform their percussion patterns. It was delightful to hear the year 2 students' explain to me that good writing required planning and they detailed how they were learning about narratives. They said that a great narrative had a complexity to make the plot interesting.
Staffing
This week we welcome Miss Jemma Davey to Prep R and Mrs Julie Veach who will be our internal relief teacher. Mrs Linda Hamilton is now leading our library and resource collection. The students are very excited to meet Godzilla, the bearded dragon who now resides in the library! We also welcome Mrs Susan Charters who is supporting the Prep teachers as an additional teacher.
Open Day
This week we hosted new and existing parents as they attended the Open Day for families residing in catchment. The school leaders very capably escorted parents and children on a tour of the school. They talked with our prospective parents about the highlights of Aspley State School which included: science specialist teachers, the library, inter school sport, excellent instrumental music programs, Japanese as a Language other than English, Aspley Speaks Out, Drama Club, Choirs, Writer’s Club, Chess Club, swimming lessons, vegetable garden, great teachers and the buddy classes. The out of catchment Open Day will be held on Friday 1 June at 9.00 am in the hall. In catchment Prep interviews will be held on Friday the 8th June 2018.
Chaplaincy
The school has been advertising for a new school Chaplain and to date a suitable applicant has not been appointed. This position has been readvertised though Scripture Union. The next meeting of the Local Chaplaincy Committee will be held on Thursday 3 May at 7.15 am – 8.30 am in A Block. We are seeking another parent to join this group. Please contact admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au if you are interested to join this supportive group who advocate for the valuable role of a school chaplain.
Aspley State School P&C
The Aspley State School Parents and Citizens’ Association meets on Tuesday 1 May at 7.00 pm in the school library. The P & C Association is currently seeking nominations for a Secretary and Vice-President. If you are skilled and interested in this role please read the job description below:
The Vice-President provides essential support to the President and to other Executive Officers if required. The Vice-President is responsible for chairing meetings in the President’s absence and carrying out any duties delegated by the President.
The Vice-President should:
- consider this position as the President’s understudy
- become familiar with P&C operations, rules and meeting procedures
- provide support and assistance to all the Executive Officers
- look on the role as a means of gaining an understanding and supporting all Executive roles.
The Secretary attends to the administrative tasks required to operate the P&C, particularly regarding meetings and correspondence.
It is the Secretary’s responsibility to:
- prepare and provide notice to members of upcoming meetings within the required time frames
- prepare and distribute meeting agendas to members
- prepare, distribute and present minutes of meetings to members
- act upon any directions given at meetings
- maintain a register of all incoming/outgoing correspondence and distribute correspondence promptly when required
- maintain a register of members, including life members
- maintain a Blue Card register for non-parent members, paid employees and Executive Officers when the P&C operates an OSHC service (in which case the parent exemption does not apply) - more information about Blue Cards is available at www.bluecard.qld.gov.au and the Outside School Hours Care section of this Guide
- maintain a volunteer register at every site and activity where volunteers work on behalf of the P&C
- ensure a copy of the P&C’s Constitution is accessible and available to members
- organise, record and maintain P&C documents, ensuring that all necessary records are retained/archived appropriately.
During a P&C meeting, the Secretary should:
- record the meeting minutes, following the framework of the agenda as outlined in the Constitution
- record details accurately (but succinctly); if the meeting is moving too fast for accurate recording, ask the speakers to slow down
- keep an attendance book, listing the full names of those who attend and those who provide an apology
- record motions clearly.
- make sure that every motion is moved by one member and seconded by another member. Record the names of the mover and seconder in the minutes. Names of members participating in the discussion do not need to be recorded
- read every motion back to the meeting to ensure the record is accurate and the meaning is as intended
- keep a motions register so that all motions are recorded in one convenient place and are easy to locate if needed; the motions register should identify the person who is to follow up any action
- ensure all monetary expenditure is recorded in the minutes.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
Easter Hat Parade
As always, the students from Prep to Year Two made us proud with their wonderful singing and ‘acting’ performances for the Easter Hat Parade, last term. If you attended the event, you would surely agree that my 4 Year Two comperes did a marvellous job and were very confident in their presentation of the items.
We were very lucky as the weather was beautiful and the Easter Bunny could visit the classes and leave little surprises!
I would like to thank Ray White Aspley for inviting us to participate in their Easter colouring competition. The lucky winners received large Easter eggs from Mr Bunny himself.
Congratulations to the following students:

P-2 Fun Run
Last term, the Prep to Year Two students participated in a fun run on the school oval. The Prep and Year One students collected tokens as they completed each lap. These tokens were tallied and added to the House points.
The Year Two students received ribbons when they finished first, second or third after running two laps of the oval. It seems that we have some budding athletes in the lower school!
Water fun day
If your child enrolled to participate in the swimming program, through Swim Solutions, at school, they would have been involved in the Water Fun Day activities. There were two parts of the session - the assessment of skills learnt during the program and the activities involving water play on the netball courts.

The students had a ball in and out of the pool. Unfortunately for the Year Two children, their second part of the session had to be stopped because of the rain. This half hour activity has been rescheduled to Wednesday May 2 from 2pm – 3 pm. Please look on the website for specific times for your child’s class. The students involved will need to bring their togs, sun-shirt, sunscreen and thongs and a towel.

Waiting areas for students
Thank you to the families who support us in reminding your child to wait in the Easter Hall before school begins every morning. It is important that your child is in this area for their own safety.
Self-managed Behaviours
This term, we would like for you to assist us to encourage your child to be more Self-Managed. We will also communicate this through Assembly in the next couple of weeks.
What this might look like:
- Packing and unpacking their own bags for school and when they return home
- Giving appropriate notes and/or messages to teachers or parents
- Ensuring that they care for their property like hats and winter clothes (beginning to get a little chilly!)
- Organising their own desks, equipment at school.
- Remembering messages – where to wait to be picked up.
BOOST
For the next 7 weeks, we will be boosting the reading of the Year 1 and Year 6 students. Year 6’s will work on Reciprocal Reading which focusses on comprehension strategies. The students are given different roles where they need to lead the group in predicting, clarifying and summarising what they read and pose questions to help with their understanding. The Year Ones will work on guided reading where they will do picture walks, vocabulary building, predicting, clarifying their predictions through their reading and questioning when they need more information.
Ask your child what they learnt in BOOST and encourage them to use these strategies with you at home.
Focus rule
The focus rule for the next couple of weeks is Value Learning. Ask your child what this looks like in the classroom? In the music room? In the LOTE room? On the oval, when doing Physical Education?
AEDC
The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is an Australian Government initiative conducted nationally since 2009. It is completed once every three years and measures the developmental progress of cohorts of children as they start their first year of full time school.
This census involves teachers completing, the AvEDI (Australian version of the Early Development Index), a research tool which collects data relating to five key areas of early childhood development. These areas are: physical health and wellbeing, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills (school based), communication skills and general knowledge.
Research shows that the experiences and relationships that babies and children have in their early years strongly affect their future development. Providing the right kinds of services, resources and support during the early years brings life-long benefits to children and their whole communities.
The results and data collected through this census do not identify individual children but groups of children. It is used by early childhood educators and health services, local councils and community groups, schools and governments to plan and allocate the right type of services, resources and support to communities.
Participation in the census is voluntary and parents can let the teachers know if they do not wish for their child to be involved. Letters will come home in the next week for you to learn a little more about this census.
Prep Vision Screening 2018
All Prep students are invited to participate in a FREE vision screening test being held at the school in September. Information notes and permission forms will go out to the students today and need to be returned to the school office, by Friday 4 May.
This early intervention will ensure quicker treatment outcomes for your child as good vision is important for children’s educational, physical and social development.
Sorry Day
The Noonga Reconciliation Group have invited Aspley State School to participate in National Sorry Day on Friday 25 May from 10am – 12pm. The celebration will occur in Kalinga park, Clayfield. The school will be represented by a staff member and we have been asked to continue with our tradition of bringing bunting for students to write messages of support. If you choose to take your child or children to this event, could we ask that you inform the school on the day. The usual procedures for late arrival will need to occur when returning to school.

Student Absences
NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.
The existing school absence line, email absence address and QParents are still functioning.
We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

RAFFLE BONANZA
We received an overwhelming response from local businesses in donations to our raffle prize draw. We recognize that the lead-time to our Movie Under the Stars was not very long, and not all families may have had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the prizes on offer. As such, the P&C have decided to host a RAFFLE BONANZA. This is an online-raffle event, where we would like to encourage you to get the word out and share this online raffle to everyone you know, to really bolster our P&C fundraising efforts. Our list of projects is never-ending and every little bit counts.

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS - Uniform Shop Convenor Position:
Congratulations to Mrs Jodie Parke on her successful application to our Uniform Shop Convenor position. Mrs Parke is not only a parent at our school, but also a tireless volunteer at many school and P&C activities. We look forward to working with Mrs Parke and Mrs Mulrooney (Tuckshop Convenor) to manage the P&C Business Operations to the benefit of our community.
TUCKSHOP NEWS – Updated Menu and New Flexischools cut-off time
Mrs Mulrooney has updated our Tuckshop menu to reflect the items that have been more popular. We have also adjusted the cut-off time for Flexischools ordering to 8am to allow families more time to get their orders in. Sushi Friday remains for now, however unless we receive the minimum orders, we will not be able to continue providing this service.
We have a new service available – BIRTHDAY CAKES! Our YUM cake lives up to its name and is YUM, and now you can order a birthday cake to make it easy to celebrate your child’s birthday at school. Jane will decorate the cake with a Birthday Banner and pre-cut the cake so when it goes down to the classroom, the teacher only needs to serve. Check online at Flexischools for the options available.
Volunteers are desperately needed for Friday as our regular volunteer has taken some maternity leave! Just two parents per class per week would mean 1 shift per term! Duties including making sandwiches, chopping fruit, and packing orders. Very easy to do and a great way to meet other parents. Please email Jane Tuckshop.AspleySS@gmail.com to offer your help.
Aspley Bakers’ Club resumes on Monday 23 April 2018. We welcome any new parents (mums or dads!) who like to bake to use our Tuckshop Kitchen on a Monday morning to bake some treats for our Tuckshop and have the chance to meet new friends as well. Thank you to our current bakers for their time and tasty treats!
Easter Parade Bake Stall Update
Thank you to all the staff, families and students who supported our Easter Bake Stall last term (such a long time ago now!). We raised over $800 which is just fantastic and we will be putting that into the savings account while the P&C and school determine the projects it would like to focus on in the near future.
All moneys raised, whether incidentally or through major fundraisers like our Movie Night does go back to our school and our students. So thank you again to our volunteers and to YOU, for supporting our efforts!
Term 2 – We love to keep you busy! We love to keep you involved! Mark these dates on your calendar now!
