PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

School Priority of Writing

Teachers have a strong focus on developing each student's vocabulary as a key strategy to enhance their writing. Through the explicit teaching of vocabulary, students: increase their reading comprehension; improve their range and specificity in writing; communicate more effectively; and develop a deeper understanding of words of which they were partially aware.

Teachers have been planning experiences where students learn new words and study their meaning, spelling, use and the knowledge that comes with specific vocabulary for a purpose and audience. In term two, teachers will model a lesson and share feedback with a professional partner, for the teaching of vocabulary, to enhance writing.

Teachers and parents can support students to learn new or unknown words by:

  • repeating words in a variety of contexts
  • describing the words
  • supporting words through visuals
  • connecting words with student lives
  • extending words with anecdotes
  • make associations
  • giving definitions
  • comparing and contrast
  • questioning
  • chartering characteristics
  • rephrasing sentences
  • analysing the structure of the word
  • providing tactile examples, and
  • giving examples or correct and non-correct usage.

International Baccalaureate (IB) –Primary Years Program (PYP)

Last term I took leave and self-funded my attendance at the World IB Heads Conference in Singapore. It was delightful to meet some of the 1800 delegates who are school leaders from International Baccalaureate schools all over the world. What a small world it is. I was fortunate to converse with a gentleman who was from Ritsumeikan Junior High School, Kyoto, Japan. Aspley State School proudly hosts students from this school each year. See the link below:

http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/fkc/eng

Aspley State School has completed an application for candidacy for the International Baccalaureate (IB) -Primary Years Programme (PYP). We look forward to feedback from the organisation and to continue professional development for staff. The application has provided access to valuable learning resources for the school to support curriculum planning, teaching, assessment, global views to education and policy development.

There has been a significant interest in IB from our school community. This includes parents from our school who have themselves enjoyed an IB education; existing parents whose older children attend an IB school; a number of families who are potential enrolments; transferring teachers and the education community who are interested in the school exploring the International Baccalaureate Programme.

Congratulations to the Aspley Swimming Club

It was a delight to attend the recent Aspley Swimming Club Annual Presentations evening last Saturday. I was very proud of the students and their accomplishments and it was a joy to see them accept their respective medals or trophies. My commendation to the Swim Club Committee for their high performance demonstrated in the administration of the club. The club is inclusive and supports each child to be their best. It is wonderful to see a growth to now include 155 members.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.

The assessments are undertaken every year in the second full week in May. In 2018 children will sit assessments:

  • 15 May 2018 - Language Conventions and Writing
  • 16 May 2018 - Reading
  • 17 May 2018 - Numeracy

More information for parents is at the link below:

https://www.nap.edu.au/home

Parents can support their children by reassuring children to do their best as they do each day at school, ensuring they have a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast and to arrive at school on time on these days. Children have experienced a practice test in class so they are well aware of the expectations required.

International Study Tour

On 21-27 July 2018, Aspley State School will host the Kinmen County Board of Education students (approx. 20) with 2 adults. Kinmen County is in Taiwan, a small island close to China.

We will be seeking homestay families preferably in our school community, who can host two students. In order to host the students, each adult in the household is required to have a positive notice from a Qld Working With Children Check (Bluecard).

Please contact me should you be able to assist by providing a homestay placement with your family. These children will be from a larger group of 60 children from Kinmen County who will be hosted across three Brisbane schools.

Special Thanks

Recently, the school acknowledged the significant contribution of five well regarded, school staff who are to retire, or, to take leave with a view to retirement. This includes Mrs Hope Francis, Mrs Liz Abbey, Mrs Elaine Dooley and Mrs Joan Laxton. In May 2018, Mrs Bernice Thompson will have completed 40 years of dedicated service as a teacher aide at Aspley State School. These magnificent ladies have contributed in excess of 152 years of service to Education Qld and the Aspley State School community. We thank them for making a difference in our school for our children.

The Aspley State School Foundation

The Aspley State School Foundation has begun to take shape and it has been established as an organisation that will support funds for school building and maintenance improvements to benefit all children. The foundation will have tax deductable recipient status and be able to accept donations to improve Aspley State School’s infrastructure. We hope The Aspley State School Foundation will be generously supported by many local community patrons. We look forward to seeing the official launch of the foundation in the coming weeks!

Working Bee Projects

We will be holding a three hour working bee to paint some outdoor concrete floor areas, games lines and characters on concrete, classroom interiors (Ms Harvey’s Year 1 classroom and the LOTE room) on Saturday, 19th May 2018 at 1.00 pm – 4.30 pm and on Sunday, 20 May 2018 at 8.30 am to 12.00 noon. DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Under 8’s Day

This year, we are celebrating Under 8’s Day on Friday 25 May. The activities begin at 9.00am in the morning in and around the hall and in the Prep grounds. All the classes from Prep – Year 2 will be involved and the students will be able to make their own choices as to which activity they might want to do.

The students can choose from, making crowns, wands, octopus wind socks, paddle pop puppets, playdough, necklaces or newspaper lions. They can also decorate biscuits, do collaborative hand prints, make and blow bubbles, dance and do nature play and construct with mobillo. The students will get an opportunity to decorate their own paper bag to store the pieces they have made on that day.

After First Break, from 11:30am-1:15pm, the students will be engaged in a range of rotational activities organised by Sports World Australia on our school oval.

Students are encouraged to wear their sports House coloured shirts, their school hats, sunscreen and school shoes on this day. Both breaks will be at normal times and students will return to the classroom to finish the day after Second Break.

Please find below the permission note which needs to be signed and returned to the classroom teacher (if paying electronically and the School Office (if paying in cash).

Waiting areas for students

(request for continued support)

Thank you to the families who support us in reminding your child to wait at the Eastern Hall before school begins every morning. It is important that your child is in this area for their own safety. Students should only arrive at school from 8am.

Self-managed Behaviours

This term, we would like for you to assist us to encourage your child to be more Self-Managed. We will also communicate this at Assembly in the next couple of weeks.

What this might look like:

  • Packing and unpacking their own bags for school and when they return home
  • Giving appropriate notes and/or messages to teachers or parents
  • Ensuring that they care for their property like hats and winter clothes (beginning to get a little chilly!)
  • Organising their own desks, equipment at school.
  • Remembering messages – Eg. where to wait to be picked up.

Focus rule- what we said on Assembly

At Assembly, we gave the students feedback on what we observed when we visited classrooms. We expressed how pleased we were with the behaviours they were displaying to show how they valued learning. We encouraged the students to continue with these behaviours as learning is "their job" at school.

We explained how learning can be from different people and at any time in any environment. Please support us and encourage these behaviours with your children.

Australian Early Development Census

The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is an Australian Government initiative conducted nationally since 2009. It is completed once every three years and measures the developmental progress of cohorts of children as they start their first year of full time school.

This census involves teachers completing, the AvEDI (Australian version of the Early Development Index), a research tool which collects data relating to five key areas of early childhood development. These areas are: physical health and wellbeing, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills (school based), communication skills and general knowledge.

Research shows that the experiences and relationships that babies and children have in their early years strongly affect their future development. Providing the right kinds of services, resources and support during the early years brings life-long benefits to children and their whole communities.

The results and data collected through this census do not identify individual children but groups of children. It is used by early childhood educators and health services, local councils and community groups, schools and governments to plan and allocate the right type of services, resources and support to communities.

Participation in the census is voluntary and parents can let the teachers know if they do not wish for their child to be involved. Letters will come home in the next week for you to learn a little more about this census.

Please speak to the classroom teacher if you do not want your child to be included in this census.

Student Absences

NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794

With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are safe and attending school.

Anzac Day Ceremony 2018

On the 24th of April Aspley State School held the Anzac Day Ceremony. We would like to thank The National Servicemen's Memorial Pipes and Drums who performed and Mrs Trish Lesina from Geebung-Zillimere RSL our guest speaker. The ceremony was a moving representation of tradition and remembrance. It was wonderful to have our senior students and captains involved by performing songs, reciting poems and Duncan F (School Captain) played the Last Post and The Rouse on the bugle . Duncan made us all very proud.

Anzac Day 25th April

By Lauren H

On Anzac Day (25th April), I had the privilege of reading one of the five resolutions at the Zilllmere Anzac service. It was run by the Geebung, Zillmere, Bald Hills, Aspley Sub Branch of the RSL. The service began with a march of current and ex-servicemen and women, and a military pipe band along Zillmere Road. Representatives from five local schools were invited to be part of the ceremony by reading one resolution. I felt honored to be given this responsibility on such a reflective day. The ceremony included hymns, anthems, speeches, wreath laying, and of course the "Last Post" and "The Rouse" on the bugle.

Thank you for letting me represent Aspley State School on such a special occasion.

Please ensure that you keep up to date with notices and announcements through the fortnightly school newsletter from now on.

Sparrows Soccer

The weather was glorious and the enthusiasm from the Aspley Sparrows was electric on Thursday the 27th of April. Only our second week back to training this term and we were lucky to experience and enjoy being instructed by The FCB Soccer School Brisbane, the first School of FC Barcelona Academy in Australia.

Un, dos, tres, Barca! The children were divided into two groups. Each group had twenty minutes to be involved with drills from the knowledgeable coaches. The Aspley Sparrows were all eager to learn new skills and demonstrate their own prowess! Congratulations to all the players who were well mannered, keen and prompt to training.

Another highlight for Sparrows was accomplished on the last day of school, Term 1. Four teams of students from Years 5 and 6 went to Aspley State High School to compete in The Eagles Cup. All children performed to the best of their ability and with sportsmanship to be proud of, and we came home with the championship titles in both the boy and girl competitions. Special thanks to Ms Oliver, Mr Schmidt, Mrs Karen Boardman, Mr Andrew Revie, Mrs Leigh Anne Rohde and Mr Brett Testa who assisted the teams on the day. Well done Sparrows for embracing our motto “SWIFT. SPIRITED. SOCIAL.” and coming home with the win!!!!!

School Study Tour 2018

Our school will be hosting a Study Tour this year. A study tour is a group of international students coming to Australia (Aspley SS) to learn English and be immersed in the cultural experience of going to an Australian school and staying with Australian host families. The group of 17 Japanese students aged 14-15 years old, will be arriving on the 19th of August and departing on the 1st of September. This particular group of students are from a prestigious school in Japan called Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School, which is located in the Kyoto Prefecture.

An important aspect of Study Tours is in providing “homestay” for the Japanese students. Information about providing homestay and the application form follows this message. If families are interested in providing homestay, please complete the application form and return it to the Administration Office.

I will keep you all up-to-date with any details regarding the Study Tour in future newsletters. Miss Mira Ponti (LOTE Teacher) has recently been accredited as an Officer of Study Tours and she too will be working with me on this Study Tour. Thank you.

EVENT UPDATES:

Movie Under the Stars

Thank you to all the staff, families and students who came along to Movie Under the Stars. We didn’t let the rain dampen our spirits and it was a very cozy evening in the hall. Thank you also to Sonja Mehrtens for taking over the organization of the event this year to see it to fruition. Twilight Flicks will be running another Facebook competition in July for schools to win a movie event. Keep an eye out and be ready to share and like our school logo.
