PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Congratulations School Leaders

This week I was delighted to present the second round of school leaders with their leadership badges. At assembly, I spoke to the community about the meaning of school leadership. It is what they do each day to proudly represent both themselves, their families and Aspley State School. Congratulations to these 13 students who have proudly accepted the responsibility to take up this important leadership position.

Safe Schools

Today I had the honour to attend a special breakfast meeting hosted by TUH. The guest speaker was renowned, teacher and boxer, Mr Jeff Horn.

Jeff Horn is currently a world champion, professional boxer holding the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) welterweight title since 2017, after defeating Manny Pacquiao. Jeff  represented Australia at the Olympics in 2012, reaching the quarter finals of the light-welterweight bracket.

Jeff Horn spoke of his hard training regime and the technical aspects of boxing. He was modest and gracious and he presented that hard work, diligence, skill and strategy supports his success. He spoke of the support from his team, as integral to his success. He also spoke about being a teenager who had challenges with other teenagers bullying him. He said it was then, when he took up boxing as a sport. He became a successful boxer as a young adult.

As a teacher, Jeff Horn spoke being dedicated to listen and provide thoughtful advice to young people who have been effected by bullying.

The national definition for Australian schools defines bullying:

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

Today, I called the students of years 4, 5 and 6 to a special assembly to remind them of the school rules. I spoke of the Aspley State School’s core values of being: responsible; prepared; independent; and successful. I also outlined the Responsible Behavior Plan for Students and that behavior that was prejudicial to the good order and conduct of the school, will be managed through resulting consequences. Sadly, this week has resulted in the suspension of children who failed to show respect to others, be safe or refused to complete the assigned learning tasks.

Resources for parents to support their young people who express concerns about bullying are at:

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/RespondingToBullying/Parents

Resources for parents to support their young people with cyber safety are at:

I recommend parents /carers access these sites to read this useful information.

Parents and carers – do we have your latest contact details?

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S NEWS

Under 8s Day

On Friday 25 May, we are celebrating Under 8’s Day at Aspley State School. All the classes from Prep – Year 2 will be involved in a range of activities in and around the hall and in the Prep grounds beginning at 9.00am. The students will be able to choose from  from the vast variety of activities on offer.

Activities include: making crowns, wands, octopus wind socks, paddle pop puppets, playdough, necklaces or newspaper lions, decorating biscuits, painting, making and blowing bubbles, dancing, having nature play and constructing using mobillo. The students will get an opportunity to decorate their own paper bag to store the pieces they have made for the day.

After first break, from 11:30am-1:15pm, the students will be engaged in a range of rotational activities organised by Sports World Australia on our school oval.

Students are encouraged to wear their House coloured shirts, their school hats, sunscreen and closed school shoes on this day. Both breaks will be at normal times and students will return to the classroom to finish the day after second break.

Waiting areas for students (request for continued support)

Thank you to the families who support us in reminding your child/children to wait at the Eastern Hall before school begins every morning. It is important that your child is in this area for their own safety.

Self-managed Behaviours (request for continued support)

This term, we would like for you to assist us to encourage your child to be more Self-Managed. We will also communicate this through Assembly in the next couple of weeks.

What this might look like:

  • Packing and unpacking their own bags for school and when they return home
  • Giving appropriate notes and/or messages to teachers or parents
  • Ensuring that they care for their property like hats and winter clothes (beginning to get a little chilly!)
  • Organising their own desks, equipment at school.
  • Remembering messages – where to wait to be picked up.

Focus rule- what we said on Assembly

At assembly, we reminded students to STOP, THINK and DO. These three words are very powerful and help students to make positive and strong choices after taking some time to think about their actions before enacting them.

Student Absences

NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794

With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

Early Act

Starting Thursday 31st of May, the Earlyact Club will begin our ‘Litter-Free Thursday’ campaign. The aim is to encourage all students to bring a lunch that is free of single-use packaging once a week. Members of the club will promote the campaign during assembly and provide ideas around more environmentally-friendly ways of packing lunches. Hopefully, with some encouragement from our members, the idea will catch on and everyone will have a ‘Litter-Free Thursday’ and do their part to care for our environment.

School Swimming Program

At the end of last Term the years 1 -3 swimming program culminated with an Aqua Fun Day delivered by Swim Solutions. It was a great day where all the children got to put their newly learned or practiced skills into action doing some fun activities (both in and out of the pool). Unfortunately, the year 2’s were ‘stormed out’ and had to wait until the beginning of this Term to finish their session, but it was worth the wait.

Pictures definitely tell a thousand words as the photos show

Aladdin Musical Excursion

Fifty Year Four and Year Six students had the amazing opportunity this week to attend the Aladdin Musical at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC. All students were inspired and had an amazing time at this magical theatre experience. Please read below a recount of this excursion from Leala V:

As I sat waiting for the lights to go down and the curtain to open I felt so excited. When it finally happened, out came the genie bursting with energy and humour. This was the start of an amazing show filled with colour and magic.

The genie was my favourite character, who was covered in bling and could really sing. He made me laugh with all of his funny lines, actions and voices. Definitely the star of the show!

As Aladdin and Jasmine sat on the magic carpet and flew around the stage, I watched in amazement wondering how this was happening. This is one of the theatre’s biggest secrets. The stars twinkling above the stage and the two of them singing created a magical moment where the two characters bonded.

The singing was spectacular and I really loved the song “Proud of your boy”, because he put a lot of emotion into it and connected with me. I really enjoyed watching the dancing and acrobatics, as I really liked seeing them do all of their different tricks. Each scene was filled with magical moments and at the end of one of the songs there was an explosion with tinsel shooting out into the audience. They even changed costumes in a cloud of smoke.

Aladdin was the most surprising musical that I have ever seen. The magic tricks, the singing, the dancing and of course Genie’s funny lines made this excursion the best one yet.

Students and teachers alike will be captivated by Kaboom Percussions unique brand of music making, combined with elements of magic, juggling, and comedy to create an unforgettable experience that students will rave about.

The Kaboom Percussion show is not something to just sit and watch - the audience is an integral part of this interactive performance! School Study Tour 2018

Our school will be hosting a Study Tour this year. A study tour is a group of international students coming to Australia (Aspley SS) to learn English and be immersed in the cultural experience of going to an Australian school and staying with Australian host families. A group of 17 Japanese students aged 14-15 years old, will be arriving on the 19th of August and departing on the 1st of September. This particular group of students are from a prestigious school in Japan called Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School, which is located in the Kyoto Prefecture.

An important aspect of Study Tours is in providing “homestay” for the Japanese students. Information about providing homestay and the application form follows this message. If families are interested in providing homestay, please complete the application form and return it to the Administration Office.

I will keep you all up-to-date with any details regarding the Study Tour in future newsletters. Miss Mira Ponti (LOTE Teacher) has recently been accredited as an Officer of Study Tours and she too will be working with me on this Study Tour. We both hope that you will be able to help us in providing homestay and that it proves to be a rewarding experience for you and your family.

Thank you.

Jump up Occupational Therapy

Does your child pick up an object on the left side of their body with their left hand but if it’s on their right side, they use their right hand? They may have difficulty crossing their midline which can make other daily activities such as reading, writing, even sitting more difficult! Some activities to help develop your child's ability to cross their midline include, playing cars on a large path using their dominant hand to drive the car, use large paint brushes and rollers to ‘paint’ the side of the house with water and practicing windmills (ie: bend to touch hand to opposite foot then stand upright and repeat with other hand and foot).
