PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

With term two well underway, Aspley State School children are proud of their learning achievements. Teachers are pleased to provide them ongoing feedback to enable them to be capable, precise and achieve their best.

Students participate in assessments, either formative or summative assessments, which informs their future learning episodes and their Semester One Summative Report (report card).

Summative Reports are sent to parents / carers each semester in June and December. I ask that parents please ensure that email addresses are current, in order to receive the report at the end of this term.

If you wish to update your contact information please email: admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au advising of the new information e.g. telephone number, email or emergency contacts.

Toys

Children are not to bring swap cards or toys to school. Parents are encouraged to support this request. If children bring these toys to school, they may get lost or damaged and they become a distraction to learning or social interactions.

School Dress Code

Parents and carers please support your child to wear the appropriate Aspley State School uniform. Hair of shoulder length or longer should be tied back. No jewellery or wrist bands (unless supported by a medical practitioner) should be worn to school.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Last Friday, the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed Under 8’s day. The children were really excited with broad smiles on their faces. They seemed to have lots of difficulty choosing an activity to do because of the wide variety of activities on offer. They went to the different activities with their bags in tow. Some with parent helpers and others with their buddies.

There was glitter everywhere in the bag decorating area, children chasing big bubbles and little bubbles. ‘Kings’ and ‘queens’ wearing their crowns and penne pasta bracelets and necklaces. Everywhere you looked, there were children actively involved in dancing, building, painting, rolling, cutting and gluing. Then to top it off, children had another two hours of racing, catching, throwing, hopping and kicking balls. By the end of it the children and teachers were exhausted and they had a fun time.

Thank you to the parent helpers who gave of their time and supervised a group of under 8 year olds. Our student leaders also did a fantastic job helping the teachers with the activities.

Waiting safely in the waiting areas before school

This week, we had a report that a child was spotted running out of the waiting area chasing his ball which had rolled under a car. We are very lucky that the child did not get hurt. We have always reminded students that the Hall area is not for ball games. – kicking or otherwise.

Parents and Caregivers, we need your support with this. If you could please remind your children that they are not to kick their balls or play with them in the waiting area (Eastern Hall) as balls do roll and the car park adjoins this area. We remind the student, on a daily basis, that their job is to sit in the designated area and look out for their parents. If students are following that instruction the potential for accidents is reduced.

Please be aware that balls will be confiscated if children do not strictly adhere to this safety rule.

We would also ask for parent support to maintain safety in the pick-up area. The students are taught to remain behind the yellow lines painted into the footpath beside the 4 parking bays. Students are to wait behind these lines until the car they are getting into comes to a full stop. There have been some instances of students holding on to car doors as they are stopping, entering the car park to get into cars before they have reached the parking bay and walking between cars to meet a parent in the car park. If you have parked your car in the car park, we ask that you cross over to your student and escort them back to your car. If you are picking your child up from the 4 bays in the pick-up area, we ask that you observe the rules that are taught to the students.

We ask that these rules be observed as they exist to ensure the safety of every student in the school.

Self-managed Behaviours

Thank you for supporting us with this initiative. Encourage children to:

  • Pack and unpack their own school bag before school and when they return home.
  • Give appropriate notes and/or messages to teachers or yourself.
  • Ensure that they care for their property like hats and winter clothes (lots ending up in the lost property bin - unnamed).
  • Organise their own desks and equipment at school. Remembering to ask for replenishments if required.
  • Remember messages – where to wait to be picked up and not to depend on constant reminders form the school office.

Get your child or children to:

  • Repeat messages back to you to ensure that they have understood it.
  • Use strategies to remember things such as tying a knot in a handkerchief – I have to remember something, placing something next to the bag so it jogs the memory or write a list.

iPads

Just a reminder that students are not to use their iPads in unsupervised areas eg. the waiting areas, before or after school. iPads should remain in their school bags and not in their hands to ensure the safety of the equipment. Thank you for your support around this requirement.

Focus rule- what we said on assembly

At assembly, we focussed on Being Safe. Students were reminded to walk when transitioning from building to building and from the oval to the classroom especially on rainy days. The example provided to them was when they were dismissed from the hall or oval after the play bell, they had to walk in an orderly manner back to the classroom.

Another area that needs to be highlighted is the corner of the oval near the shipping container. This is an out-of-bounds area for students. Students cannot be properly supervised if they are behind the container. Unfortunately, one of our neighbours has reported to the school an incident of rock throwing. Rocks were thrown over the fence and hit a lower roof on the house. If students are not playing in this area, the possibility of this occurring reduces. We ask that you have a discussion at home about the dangers of throwing any objects at people or properties. We thank you in advance for this co-operation.

Farewell and thank you to our beloved Mrs Bernice Thomson

We had a special farewell assembly for our dedicated teacher’s aide Mrs Bernice Thomson on Monday 28 May. Mrs Thomson was very emotional and humbled when she listened to the students reading messages they had written especially for her. The messages have been included below.

Mrs Thomson

  • Thank you for always helping us read. We are very grateful indeed – from 2S
  • From all of us in 6H, who have worked with you in the time we have been here at Aspley State School, you have always been helpful, caring and considerate. You have been a little strict but only in a nice way. You have been thoughtful and well…., just amazing! We will miss you but hope you enjoy your well-earned retirement.
  • Is a kind, hardworking lady, who is beautiful inside and out. She is like an Energizer Bunny who keeps going and going and going! Thank you, Mrs Thomson for always being there to help us. We will always have fond memories of you!
  • The library captain's would like to express our appreciation for your years of assistance in the school library. From book covering and borrowing to shelving and supervising us during lunch breaks. You will be missed terribly!
  • Mrs Thomson is marvellous. She puts a twirl in our step, by making us feel great every time we see her! Mrs Thompson helps to BOOST our learning. She deserves a bounty of gold for all of her hard work. She helps us to believe in ourselves and know that if we set our mind to it, we can achieve our dreams. We appreciate you….all the way to Mars and back! Thank you and all the best for your future adventures, 2G and Miss Gothmann.

B beautiful, kind and lovely lady
E everything you do is wonderful
R running here, there and everywhere
N nimble, never forget you are nature
I intelligent, immaculate and imaginative!
C certainly irresistible
E entertained us with funny faces.

The Year 1 children, as a finale, sang a song called, ‘I love you’ at the end of assembly. It was very moving and lots of people tried to hold back tears.

Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 Athletics Carnival

Our P-2 Athletics Carnival has been scheduled on Friday 15 June. We will commence with the March Past at 8:45am followed by our running races. The tabloids will begin after the children have a short snack/toilet and drink break.

We expect the Carnival to be over between 11:00am and 11:15am. We will enact a modified First Break for the Prep - Year 2 students for the day. Hope to see you there, ready to run the parent race.

Uniforms

As we approach winter we would like to take this opportunity to remind students of the correct uniform to be worn. Jumpers and hoodies need to be maroon in accordance with the school’s Dress code. All uniform items can be purchased from the uniform shop. Plain jumpers and hoodies can also be purchased from most major retailers.

Literacy Matters!

Home Reading

This year at Aspley State School we have renewed our focus on nightly reading as research shows the more students practise a skill the better they become. Apart from academic gains, the students’ view of reading as a lifelong pleasurable activity is an anticipated outcome. It is a delight to see students involving themselves in reading series of books from the library and also accessing digital copies of books from the Queensland Department of Education’s e-library. Students from Aspley State School can access the library using this link:

https://eduqueenslandau.libraryreserve.com/10/45/en/SignIn.htm?url=Default.htm

The student uses his or her unique MIS sign in e.g. (bmare01) to log in. Please enjoy this digital library as part of the school’s commitment to providing a range of texts for nightly reading. To acknowledge the great commitment parents make to their children’s reading development, teachers have nominated students for recognition for consistent home reading. Congratulations to those student recipients from each class. Students and parents please continue this great effort. A further acknowledgement will occur in semester two so we urge you to continue or begin, if this is not yet a consistent practice. Don’t forget that we are also participating in the …

This challenge involves parents reading and sharing quality literature with their children, reaching set targets for year levels. We hope you enjoy this home reading challenge.

Together we can make a difference to your child’s reading development!

Writing competition opportunities:

Prep to Year 4 : RACQ storybook competition

Aspley State School P-4 classes are invited to enter a page towards a book to be published by RACQ as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge activities. Winning entries from across the State will be judged early July. We look forward to sharing some of our entries with you!

Year 5 and 6

The Queensland (and NT) Independent Education Union are holding a literary competition for Years 5 and 6 students. Student pieces can take the form of a poem (no word count) or short story (400-800 words). Pieces can be written at home or school but must be the person’s own original work. The link below will take you to a poster and the rules and entry form for the competition. As a school we are able to submit a maximum school total of 10 student entries. We are not eligible for the art competition.

https://www.qieu.asn.au/events/art-design-awards-and-literary-competition/

Please submit all possible entries to your child’s class teacher by first break Monday 18th June with the word count on the front of the piece and an attached entry form with guardian signature. The entry form is obtained from the above website. This will give time for our school selection panel to identify our top entries, further permission/entry forms to be completed and if not already, these selected pieces typed onto A4 for entry and posted before the competition deadline.

This is a great opportunity for Year 5 and 6 students to put into practice term 2’s writing focus or to consolidate previous work. Please consider this as a real-life writing experience for your Year 5 or 6 child to undertake.

Finance Matters

It is important that consent forms for activities and excursions, along with payment, are received by the school, on or before the due date. This allows for processing and gives adequate time to arrange alternate activities for non-participating children.

The school newsletter displays a list of upcoming events and their due dates. We will now be advising families through Facebook posts when due dates for activities are approaching.

Please be advised that late payments for school excursions/activities WILL NOT be accepted.

If you are having difficulty in making payments for school activities, please contact the Business manager (bsm@aspleyss.eq.edu.au) to initiate a payment plan before the due date has come.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Student Absences

NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794

With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

Early Act

Starting Thursday 31st of May, the Earlyact Club will begin our ‘Litter-Free Thursday’ campaign. The aim is to encourage all students to bring a lunch that is free of single-use packaging once a week. Members of the club will promote the campaign during assembly and provide ideas around more environmentally-friendly ways of packing lunches. Hopefully, with some encouragement from our members, the idea will catch on and everyone will have a ‘Litter-Free Thursday’ and do their part to care for our environment.

Thank You

School Study Tour 2018

Our school will be hosting a Study Tour this year. A study tour is a group of international students coming to Australia (Aspley SS) to learn English and be immersed in the cultural experience of going to an Australian school and staying with Australian host families. The group of 17 Japanese students aged 14-15 years old, will be arriving on the 19th of August and departing on the 1st of September. This particular group of students are from a prestigious school in Japan called Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School, which is located in the Kyoto Prefecture.

An important aspect of Study Tours is in providing “homestay” for the Japanese students. Information about providing homestay and the application form follows this message. If families are interested in providing homestay, please complete the application form and return it to the Administration Office.

I will keep you all up-to-date with any details regarding the Study Tour in future newsletters. Miss Mira Ponti (LOTE Teacher) has recently been accredited as an Officer of Study Tours and she too will be working with me on this Study Tour. We both hope that you will be able to help us in providing homestay and that it proves to be a rewarding experience for you and your family.

Thank you.
Rowena Mina (6M) and Mira Ponti (LOTE Teacher)

P&C News

It’s time to get to know our P&C team a little better – and this week we will start with the two newest members of the P&C executive team, Natalie Caskie (Secretary) and Barbara Rushe (Vice President). The executive team work together to represent the parent body; and support communications between the school and community.

“I’m Natalie, mum of Nathan who is in Prep S. I also have a 2-year old daughter - Thea. My husband (Stuart) and I moved to Australia in 2011 from South Africa after an eight-year stint in London. We have fallen in love with Australia and are happy to call it home.

I joined the P&C because I know nothing about the school system; how schools operate or use their funding etc. and would like to understand this more.

I volunteered as Secretary of the P&C because I feel like this is a great way for me to contribute whilst not being at the fore front.”

“My Name is Barb Rushe and I’m a very proud mother of three daughters. With one all grown I am cherishing my youngest two, Milliani year 5 and Alyssandra year 3, not wanting to miss a beat as I am very aware time passes very quickly.

I joined the P&C so I can be a little more involved. I believe in effective organic communication and I hope I can be another bridge between parents and the school. My passion is to really help show-case how amazing the P&C are and to encourage our school community to really enjoy and participate in many of the great activities we have on offer.

I am also a bit of an environmental warrior with recycling and reducing one use waste being on the top of my list. I hope to be able to work with the school and the school community to see if we can make a difference as there are lots of great options to be involved in.

If you see me out-and-about, please stop and say hello, I am always up for a natter.”

Look out for next fortnight’s P&C News to find out more about our P&C team.

Did you know?

Profits made through our Tuckshop, Uniform Shop, fundraisers like our Raffle Bonanza, and general events (such as school dances) goes back to our school and students.

So far this year, the P&C has supported the establishment of a Building Fund (more details to come) and funded the costs of stage microphones so that the Annie Jnr cast can be heard at our inaugural school musical, to be held later this year. We also continue to fundraise to support the rebuild of our Early Years Playground.

EVENT WRAP UP:

  • Working Bee: Thank you to Dave Kerr and Simon Pritchard for co-ordinating the working bee; and to all our volunteers who lent a hand. The walkway to the admin building, class 1H and the Swim Club canteen got a bit of paint-work, while the Eastern Hall and Prep areas got a great wash.
  • P&C Day and Holt Bolt Unbreakable Talk: Approximately 50 parents and students attended breakfast on Friday 25, and listened as Richard Holt shared a few entertaining stories about looking at challenges with a new perspective, never judging a book by its cover, believing in yourself, and the value of team work. Thank you to the parent helpers on the day, and Ms Oliver and her hospitality crew for the great job they did!
  • P&C Morning Tea: Thank you to the dozen mums and kids who joined us for morning tea on P&C Day – it was a great opportunity to meet some new people and share ideas, and witness our Raffle draw.
  • CONGRATULATIONS to our winners of the Raffle Bonanza Prize Draw! Thank you to everyone who supported this raffle event and to all the businesses who kindly donated prizes. We raised just over $1300 towards the Playground rebuild and other projects. The student who had the highest number of referrals and the class with the highest number of student referrers will be announced at assembly on Monday! See the next P&C meeting minutes for all our sponsors.

Jump up Occupational Therapy

My child swaps hands when writing with a pencil. How can I help them to choose a dominant hand? Hand dominance is using one hand consistently when doing accurate and dexterous work. For example when cutting with scissors, the dominant hand holds the scissors whilst the other hand holds and turns the paper. Carefully observe your child during everyday activities and make a note of whether one hand is used more or if one hand is more skilled than the other. Once it is clear which hand your child prefers, it is important to encourage them to consistently use this hand. Activities to encourage use of the preferred hand include: cutting, sharpening pencils, cooking activities, throwing and hitting balls. For more information or to talk to an OT if you are concerned about your child swapping hands visit the link below or call Madeline on 0423 162 478
