PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Aspley Speaks Out
Next week, students from Year 5 and Year 6 will present their speeches to their peers and judges as part of the preliminary round of Aspley Speaks Out, our public speaking competition. This event is always a highlight event, where children write and present a speech that communicates a viewpoint or persuades the audience. We look forward to the finals of Aspley Speaks Out at the school hall on Wednesday 17 October 2018 from 6.30 – 8.30 pm.
Fraser Coast Music Tour
Next week, 59 music students will take their musical performance on the road, as they visit Gympie, Maryborough and Hervey Bay. This music tour provides an opportunity for our students to perform for audiences within the Fraser Coast communities. Special thanks to Ms Jabs, Ms Jerram, Mrs Hinds and the volunteer parents who are to accompany the students and make this learning opportunity possible.
Ritsuemikan Study Tour
During the last two weeks we have been delighted to host the students and teachers from Ritsumeikan UJI Junior High School, Kyoto, Japan. The Ritsumeikan students have been home staying within the local community. Whilst at Aspley State School, the students have enjoyed cultural excursions and have improved their English proficiency by utilising their English language skills with their school buddies.
It is rewarding to see the close relationships that students have made through this cultural exchange experience. I wish to thank the Aspley student buddies who have been wonderful hosts and also wish to thank Ms Mira Ponti and Ms Rowena Mina, teachers, for their coordination of this study tour through Education Queensland International (EQI).
Malaysian Principals Visit
We were delighted to host Mrs Hazinah Ibrahim, Principal of SK Bukit Damansara and Mrs Mazon Hj, Principal of SK Taman Bukit Maluri, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The principals visited Aspley State School to observe teaching and see how the Australian education system compares and contrasts with education in Malaysia. We were delighted to find out that one of our students has a cousin in SK Bukit Damansara!
The school enjoyed a special assembly on the 20 August, where we welcomed our visiting Principals from Malaysia. This professional development experience has been made available through the collaboration of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trading (DFAT), Malaysian Government and Education Queensland International.
Chicken Pox (Varicella)
I wish to advise parents that there are current cases of chicken pox in the school community. Please be aware of the symptoms and exclusion period as detailed by Queensland Health.

Year 4 Camp
Year Four students are excited as they prepare for their camp at Alexandra Headlands on 10-12 September 2018. This is their first big camp away from home. The children are looking forward to the activities including: beach swimming and beach games, sand sculptures, the amazing race, minute to win it, ten pin bowling and the Beach Olympics. Students will develop team skills and work together to learn and have fun.
Australian Curriculum
It is parents, families and carers who have the most influence on their children. When families are actively involved in their children’s education, children usually enjoy school and achieve better results.
The Australian Curriculum has a section of the website that provides information for families and carers about their children and the Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend.
Download The Australian Curriculum: an overview for parents to learn about how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. There is also information about how schools can use the Australian Curriculum to support students' needs and interests, and links to further information.
National Literacy and Numeracy Progressions
Literacy and numeracy development influences students’ success in most aspects of schooling. The National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions are a resource that describe how literacy and numeracy learning develops over time.
There are two progressions – one for literacy and one for numeracy. Each is divided into sub elements that give a detailed description of the typical developmental path in particular aspects of literacy and numeracy. The progressions may assist parents to understand the way literacy and numeracy skills develop and to identify the particular literacy and numeracy skills their children are using or are currently learning.

Every second counts around water
Be your own super hero and help prevent children from drowning.
That’s the message from Olympic swimmer Mitch Larkin in the latest Queensland Family and Child Commission water safety video campaign .
Sadly, it takes just a few seconds for tragedy to strike, so make sure you provide active supervision when your children are near water. Children should be in the direct line of sight of an appropriate adult at all times.
Children under five are most at risk and make up 82% of child drownings. There are a number of steps you can take to keep children safe around water.
For more information visit the Queensland Family and Child Commission .
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
Communication with Students
In this era of digital communication, it is comforting to know that as parents, we are able to communicate with our children almost immediately. This is especially important if there is a change to pick up arrangements at the end of the day.
There have been some reported incidences of messages from parents being received by students while in class. Attending to personal messages during class times disrupts the learning that is intended for that lesson. It may also be misconstrued as a misuse of iPads.
In order to reduce any disruptions or distractions to students during key learning times, we ask that parents put all messages through the office administration. Messages will always be delivered to the students.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Class Showcases
The presentations for the class showcase on assembly have been entertaining, informative, imaginative and a pleasure to watch each week. The next classes for showcase are:
Week 8 (3 September) – 2D and 3K
Week 9 (10 September) – 4M and 3B
We look forward to watching their presentations about the great learning that is occurring each day.
Business advertising
Businesses have the capacity to advertise at Aspley State School through a variety of ways. Sponsorship is a yearlong commitment and provides promotional opportunities at three different financial levels. Sponsorship packages can be purchased through the school. Please contact our media and communications officer for additional information at admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
Advertising in the newsletter is available for businesses that hold a current Hire Agreement with the school and not for profit organisations, with approval from the Principal. Businesses can also contact Schoolzine directly to arrange for advertising spaces on the newsletter page at a cost.
There is no facility to advertise a business through any other channel in the school. Flyers, pamphlets or catalogues cannot be displayed on school grounds nor promoted through the administration office. Catalogues used as part of approved fundraising activities need to be supported through the school’s Parent and Citizen’s Association.
Year 5 Leadership Training
The Expression of Interest (EOI) Form for 2019 Senior Leader – Round 1 will be released to interested Year 5 Applicants on Monday, 3 September, at the end of the final Leadership Training session.
The EOI and required written statement must be completed and returned to the Office no later than 3pm Tuesday 11 September 2018. A Committee comprised of the current Year 5 teachers, Specialist teachers, members of the school’s Leadership team and other interested classroom teachers, will assess each EOI and shortlist the strongest candidates for participation in the Round 1 process.
Please see the attached timeline for further details.
School Council Update

Mr Stephen Solly was voted onto the School Council as a Parent Representative and has served as the Council Chair for 2018. Mrs Nelma Wright was voted onto the School Council for a second term as the Teaching Staff Representative.

Curriculum News
Aspley Term 3 Curriculum Overviews
Earlier this term, you received via your child, a curriculum overview outlining the curriculum content for your child’s year level. This curriculum content aligns with the Australian Curriculum and the Curriculum guidelines provided by Education Queensland. The Curriculum Overviews have been produced to keep you informed about your child’s learning. These overviews are also available in Curriculum tab under Teaching and Learning on the school website
https://aspleyss.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Teachingandlearning/Pages/Teachingandlearning.aspx
BConnected 2019
Year three students have received information regarding Aspley’s BConnected BYOD (bring your own device) Program. BConnected provides the opportunity for students to bring their own iPad and use it for learning both at home and school. A full sized iPad will be on the booklist as an Optional Item for students in year 4 in 2019. Once purchased, students will use this device for the next three years of their primary school education.
Students at Aspley State School still also engage in traditional handwriting, book reading and mathematical computations. Many apps on the iPad consolidate these core-learning areas through drill and practice and engage students to collaborate as global citizens. Teachers will provide students multiple opportunities to use a variety of tools for learning, and an iPad or computer is just one of these tools.
The BConnected information letter and BConnected Policy documents are also available from the school website.

Prep S
Assembly
The students of Prep S engaged the audience in the tale of the “Three Little Pigs” We presented a power point presentation, narrating our journey of learning across all curriculum areas. We then presented a retell of the story with our star actors and actresses in the class.
Woolworths
On Tuesday, we walked down to Woolworths. This was an amazing experience. The children learnt how mince was made and how bread and biscuits were baked. We even looked at the ovens, fridges and freezer- all the behind the scenes of Woolworths. We even made our own fruit sticks to eat. At the end of the tour we got to take home a sample bag. We had wonderful time. A very big thank you to all our parents who came along with us. Without your support this would not have been possible. Thank you for your help. We appreciate it.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RECRUITMENT PROCESS FOR 2019
With Term 3 upon us, we are commencing the recruitment process for 2019.
It’s a fact that the majority of people who are literate in music learn it in a school setting, and we are extremely fortunate to provide music instruction through our school. If students were not part of our school music program, there is very little chance they would seek to develop their musical skills outside the school setting — and that would be detrimental to their human growth.
It is crucial that you are aware of the positive benefits of learning to play a musical instrument — and one year of study is certainly not enough to gain all of them. You see, being a musician trains your child’s mind for success in every aspect of their life. The executive function your child will develop over the next few years through music are transferable to every academic subject. Without instrumental music education as part of their day, your child will be missing some uniquely important life lessons and tools.
We hope that your child chooses to commence in our incredible Music Program in 2019. They deserve to explore their musical education and the wonderful benefits that come with it for their entire school life, if not beyond. It is with this in mind that we can’t wait to see your child in band/orchestra next year. Learning a musical instrument is one of life’s great joys. It develops children’s confidence, complements academic development and is just plain fun!
Aspley State School children in Year Three upwards are offered the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Children from Year Four upwards are offered the opportunity to learn woodwind, brass or percussion instruments through the school’s instrumental music program. Children cannot be enrolled in both programs.
Expression of Interest parent information letters regarding participating in the 2019 Aspley Instrumental Music Program will be coming home to our current Year 2 (string) and Year 3 (woodwind/brass/percussion) in week six of Term Three. If you are interested in your child participating in this amazing program, please ensure that you return the expression of interest letter to the school office no later than Friday 21 September 2018.
If you have further questions regarding this exciting process, please contact Mrs McIntyre.
ASPLEY INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TOUR – FRASER COAST
Our young musicians are all very excited for their upcoming Fraser Coast Music Tour to be held next week on Wednesday 5 through to Friday 7 September 2018.
All touring musicians have now received their music tour shirt and information booklet. The students will be performing at Gympie Central State School, Chatsworth State School, the Town Hall in Maryborough, Maryborough West State School and finally enjoy a Whale Watch Tour on their last day of this amazing music tour prior to making their way back home to Aspley.
A reminder to all tour participants that you are to arrive at Aspley State School on Wednesday 5th September at 6.30am in readiness to depart for the tour at 7.00am. Please refer to your tour booklet for the finer details of this exciting music tour.
We wish the touring ensembles and their conductors Ms Jabs and Ms Jerram the best of musical luck for what I am sure will be a very memorable music tour for our young musicians and accompanying teacher and parent supervisors. Please come and support the touring band who will be performing on assembly this coming Monday 3 September at 8.45am.
LESSON AND REHEARSAL CANCELLATIONS
A reminder to students to ensure that you refer to your instrumental lesson times on the timetable that your instrumental music teacher have distributed to you for your weekly lessons and ensemble rehearsals. Please note the following changes/additions (outlined on your timetables) for the following dates:
- Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 September – All ensemble and Woodwind/Brass/Percussion and String group lessons are cancelled as Ms Jabs and Ms Jerram are on the Fraser Coast Music Tour.
- Monday 10 September – All ensemble and Woodwind/Brass/Percussion group lessons are cancelled on this day (Year 4 camp)
- Monday 17 & Wednesday 19 September & Thursday 20 September – All ensemble and Woodwind/Brass/Percussion and String group lessons are cancelled as Ms Jabs and Ms Jerram are in attendance at the Music Muster and Honours Music Camp.
NORTHSIDE MUSIC MUSTER 2018
Students attending the Music Muster on Monday 17 September are reminded to bring their instrument, music stand, folder, lunch, hat and water bottle to Craigslea State High School and register at the Auditorium on Hamilton Road between 8 – 9am. Students are required in school uniform and perform in a 2pm concert for parents and friends. They can be collected after the concert. No transport will be provided to this event.
NORTHSIDE HONOURS MUSIC CAMP
Congratulations to the following students Shivani, Duncan, Kate, Lauren, Kade, Tamiyah, Yuiko, Brendan and Ella on their successful auditions for Honours Music Camp in Week 10 this term. We are very proud of the quality auditions they presented. Aspley always contributes a large percentage of the attendees at this camp, and we are very proud of their high standard. Participating students are required to return the medical/consent form and payment of $75.00 to the school office by Friday 31 August 2018.
Happy Music Making to you all

Lost or Overdue Books
Thank you to those families who have been unearthing missing library books and returning them to the library as this ensures that we have resources that are available for others to use. Overdue Notices are printed every second week and given to class teachers for the students in their class who have overdue library books. If the book is not returned, then an invoice is generated and sent home via the parent’s email address for the replacement of the missing book/s.
Caring for our books by always using a Waterproof Library Bag.
This term in their Library Lessons, students in Prep and Year One have been learning how to care for their library books. One of the easiest ways we can do this is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing from the library. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a cotton bag or a plastic folder is appreciated. The Uniform shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.
Library Opening Hours
The library is open every morning before school from 8:00 – 8:30am for parents to bring their children to borrow. After borrowing, the student must return to the waiting area at the hall. The Library is also open for student borrowing every day after school until 3:15pm, excluding Tuesday. We are also open at first break playtime. Please remember that your child can only borrow if they have a waterproof library bag with them. A plastic folder or a calico/cotton bag is not suitable.
Early Act
The Early Act group is organising an initiative to support the RSPCA of QLD. They will be asking for donations and collecting items from Monday 3 September – Friday 7 September. The bins for collection will be placed in location in the Prep area and outside the Hall. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause. Please see attached information.
Aspley Foundation
Foundation Update
Thank you again to everyone who supported our June appeal. It is wonderful to see the happiness which the new carpet tiles in the Prep classrooms have brought to those little children and their teachers. We are in the process of arranging for the installation of block out blinds in at least one of the Year 6 classrooms.
Support is still required if we are to do the Year 2 storage area under F block – another $1,100 will see the job done. As for the painting of the classrooms, that’s a bit more of a challenge – but anything is achievable if we pull together.
If you would like to make a tax deductible gift to move these projects along, please go to the link below to donate. Any contribution you make will be sincerely appreciated.

Chaplaincy
Operation Christmas Child, facilitated by registered charity Samaritan’s Purse, is an exciting opportunity to give much-needed resources to children living in poverty around the world. Every year, individuals and families pack shoeboxes with school equipment, clothes, personal hygiene items and gifts; these shoeboxes are then distributed to disadvantaged countries where families and children need them most but rarely have them. You can be involved in this life-changing opportunity by:
Asking students to pair up to fill a shoebox together
Bringing a $2 donation ($1 per student) and collect a shoebox, a label, and a ‘what to pack’ brochure from Chappy Sinead in the Student Support Services room
Choose the age and gender of the child you are packing your shoebox for (this is on the label)
Following the instructions, assemble and pack your shoebox with appropriate items
Return your shoebox (drop-off locations TBA) by Tuesday 9th October – the first Tuesday back after school holidays
We are looking forward to giving to children in poverty across the globe!
Please be aware: Taking part in Operation Christmas Child is completely voluntary. Samaritan’s Purse, like many charities, is a religious organisation with religious material displayed on their brochures and website. If you do not wish your child to be affiliated with a religious charity, there is absolutely no expectation to participate. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at sineadt@chappy.org.au

P&C News
Happy Father’s Day for Sunday! BIG Thank you to our Father’s Day Stall co-ordinators, Mrs Jodie Parke and Mrs Tee Poh, for their super efforts in organizing this event; and to their team of helpers leading up to and on the day! We hope you enjoy the gifts your children selected for you!
The Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Stalls are held each year to help our students find something special for the parents (and grandparents!) on each of these special days. Jodie and Tee have this activity process fine-tuned and would love to share their knowledge with some fresh parents who might like to keep this tradition going. If you’re interested in working with Jodie and Tee as they organize 2019 (Yes! That’s how awesome this dynamic duo is!), please email PandC@aspleyss.eq.edu.au and we will connect you.
At the recent P&C meeting, our attending members:
- Approved the donation of funds raised from the Annie Jnr Raffle towards the school chaplaincy program.
- Agreed to fund the purchase of composting bins to continue the school community’s sustainability projects.
- Are providing valuable feedback to the school regarding Aspley State School’s Responsible Behaviour Plan.
- Received an update about the Container Refund Scheme and agreed to register our interest in being involved in the program.
- Received an update on the financial position of the P&C.
The P&C Association is YOUR opportunity to be involved in enhancing the educational experience of your children. In addition, it is a wonderful way to meet other parents, and contribute your skills and expertise to helping our community (or perhaps even learn new skills!). If you would like more information about how you can be involved, please feel free to contact us at PandC@aspleyss.eq.edu.au - we’d love to chat!

SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT UPDATE – from Ros (Mum of Lucy, year 3, and Stanley, year 5)
Composting has started at Aspley State School and it’s so exciting! The children are doing a great job! We need brown stuff (leaves or straw) until we set things up a bit better down the track with the collection of leaves and grass clippings around the school. We had approval from the P&C to buy some Compots for the raised garden beds. You will see these being used outside Camp Australia at the moment. Thank you to fellow Aspley parent Hedrick for getting us a great deal to buy these. If you are keen to get some too, then please email PandC@aspleyss.eq.edu.au (att: Barb Rushe) and we can all get a discount for our home Compots with a big order. See the link below for more information. Thanks for your help!
