Student Attendance

It is important that students attend every school day. Every day counts! Parents /carers we ask that you to act to minimise any time away from school and learning, for your child, as best as possible.

Learning is the important work of children. Together we want to give children their best possible chance for success at school and beyond.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN provides a snapshot of a child’s achievement in the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy, at a single point in time. The data provided can be used by families, schools and education systems to support students in their learning. Individual student results should always be considered together with other school-based assessments.

Queensland students in year 3 and year 5 received their individual NAPLAN reports last week. We are very proud of the Aspley State School students’ achievements!

Early Years Playground

We are excited that the tenders for the early years playground have been finalised and we look forward to the site works commencing in the coming month. The existing climbing net will be relocated into the new playground space and the small, existing playground will be relocated to the Prep playground. All going to schedule, and weather pending, we hope to finalise the new playground this year.

Ongoing works will continue to redevelop this area of the school, as funds become available to establish the path extensions, gardens and an outdoor learning area and tiered seating.

Armistice Centenary - Honour their Spirit!

2018 is the centenary of Armistice. One hundred years ago on, 11 November 1918, four bloody years of brutal conflict came to an end. Almost 62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation.

In commemoration of the significant event Aspley State School has commenced an art project to create three, large wall murals. Through funding made available from the Australian Government, Armistice Centenary Grant Program students in year five will work with Artist Wendy Cumes, to create an artwork for the Geebung RSL, the Member of Lilley and for Aspley State School.

On the evening of Wednesday 7th November 2018, students from nine local schools, will perform in the Armistice Centenary Concert held at the Aspley State School hall. This is an event which will commemorate the Australian men and women who have served in the military forces and the coming of peace after World War II.

Have your say on the future of sport and recreation in Queensland

Sport and recreation make a significant contribution to the health of Queenslanders, our communities and the economy.

Over the coming months, the Department of Housing and Public Works is asking Queenslanders for their feedback on the barriers preventing participation in sport and recreation, and ways to address these challenges.

Feedback will shape the future of sport and recreation in the state through the Queensland Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019–2029, due for release in early 2019.

Have your say online before 12 October.

Literacy Olympics

This week, sixteen students, in four teams, from year five and year six, participated in a challenging and fun day at Wavell State High School’s Literacy Olympics. This an annual event which challenges children to work in teams to display their English knowledge and skills and apply their understanding of Social Science and The Arts. The children especially enjoyed the music and Aussie foods categories. Team one Year 5 from Aspley State School were the runners up in their competition. All children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Miss Hinds, Mrs Evans and Mrs Boaler for their support for the teams.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Battle for Australia Commemoration Service

On Wednesday 5 September, Mrs Boaler and Charlotte Scott represented Aspley State School at the Battle for Australia Commemoration. The Federal Government proclaims Australia’s Commemoration Days. Among those for war, in order of significance, is The Battle for Australia (the first Wednesday in September) in third place, only after Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. The Battle for Australia commemorates the service of Australians in a number of conflicts that threatened the freedom and safety of Australia between 1942 and 1945, during World War Two. The most notable of these are The Battle of the Coral Sea, Kokoda and Milne Bay. For more information regarding the Battle for Australia please click on the link below.

Year 4 Camp

At the beginning of this week I had the pleasure of attending camp with the Year 4 students and their teachers. Mr Thomas and Chappy (Mrs Ten Cate) also joined us at Alexandra Headlands. The students were kept very busy with team building activities conducted by Character Builders, beach activities with the Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Saving club and a competitive night of Ten Pin bowling. The students were out of their comfort zones a number of times and were able to face some of the challenges with determination and courage. For some of our students, being away from home for the first time proved to be the challenge that they overcame.

Prep Information Night on Wednesday 19 September

We are having our Preparatory Information Night on Wednesday 19 September from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the school hall.

At the information night, new parents to the school will have the opportunity to meet members of the P and C, our Student Services Support team, the ‘Speechie’, an Occupational Therapist, the tuckshop convenor, our school principal and administration team, the Aspley State School Foundation coordinator and the OSHC (our before and after school care service) team.

This will give parents a chance to find out about the school, learn about our direction for 2019 and beyond and be part of the school community. It is an exciting time for all new parents and first time Prep parents, as this will help make your child’s transition to the school smoother. This is a parent or caregiver only night.

On Wednesday, 5 December at 9:00am to 10:15am, is Prep Orientation morning. This is the morning when you and your child will meet the 2019 teachers and visit the classrooms. You will also get to meet with the parents and the other children in your child’s class.

Please mark these dates on your calendars.

Junior Writers

Brisbane Writers Club Excursion 2018

By Caitlin P 2S

We went to the Brisbane Writers Festival on Wednesday, the 4th of September. We met four authors, Davina Bell, Kate and Jol Temple, and Pete Carneves, and we were able to get autographs from all of them.

We met Davina Bell first. She told us that, to make a great story, you have to combine your imagination with real life experience. She also said, to read a lot.

The next talk was presented by Kate and Jol Temple. They spoke about where they get their inspirations. For example, they were inspired by their family and other people.

Finally we went to a presentation by Pete Carnavas. He spoke about having fun with drawing and we drew with our eyes closed.

I really enjoyed going to the Brisbane Writers Festival and meeting all the interesting authors!

Writers’ Club Excursion to Brisbane Writers’ Festival

Written by Tiffany P 3K

On the 4th of September 2018 the Junior Writers’ Club went to the Brisbane Writers’ Festival. We met 4 authors, Davina Bell, Kate and Jol Temple and Peter Carnavas. All the students had a wonderful day meeting authors, getting autographs and most importantly, having fun.

Firstly, we met Davina Bell and she told us about how important it is to use real life experiences in your stories as well as some actions. She also talked about how her writing career started. Davina Bell told us where she got her inspiration from and where we can get ours. She read her book she wrote when she was 8 years old called Aunt Milly-Mox the Dragon.

Afterwards, we went to Kate and Jol Temple and they talked about writing differently. Kate and Jol were very funny. They also spoke about what inspired them to write and they said to use a little bit of rhyming words. They’ve written books such as Captain Jimmy Cook, Carrot Parrot, Room on the Rock and Are My Bottom?

Last but not least, we met Peter Carnavas who is an author as well as an illustrator. He taught us to draw varieties of pictures e.g a portrait of yourself with our eyes closed. Some of the tips he gave us is not to use a rubber and think outside the box. We drew a lot of pictures and at the end he read a book called My Mum is a Magician. We had lots of fun listening to Peter Carnavas.

At the end of the day we were all tired but, had tons of fun! We were all excited when we took the bus home because we couldn’t wait to tell everyone about this amazing trip. Now we know how to write a better story and have fun all at the same time!

6DA – Vision Australia Class Pet

Here’s Amber, our Vision Australia sponsored class pet.

Our latest letter from Amber thanks us for our ongoing sponsorship and tells us that she has just turned one. She celebrated her birthday at the park and got treats.

Amber is doing well I’m her training and is being assessed to see if she is ready to go to Camp Seeing Eye Dog. If she passes, she will graduate in 6 months and we’ll be invited to see her handed over to her new owner.

6DA Gets Crabby!

This term, students in 6D have been learning about environmental sustainability in English, tourism and its impact on the environment in HASS and designing and creating environmental housing for native wildlife in Design Technology.

Together, they created and designed a habitat plan to welcome some new 6D members to the class. They are proud to introduce Cobber, Gary and Mr Krabs, their class Hermit Crabs, to the Aspley community.

With daily feeding, cleansed sea and fresh water and habitat upkeep, the 6D team have welcomed the responsibility of being caring, reflective, responsible pet owners.

Are you feeling Crabby? Pick up an information brochure from 6D if you would like to know more about these friendly, social animals today!

5F – Art

This term the year 5’s have been working on a range of activities which include pastel cross sections of a variety of fruits and stunning silhouettes.

We have been focusing on line, colour and shape. Included are an assortment of pieces that some of the children have completed.

Aren’t they fantastic?

Next term, we will be completing our collages. We have also done some fantastic work around Armistice/Remembrance Day with our resident artist, Wendy.

Beautiful poppies to remember those that have fallen in the wars.

Stepping Into History – Year 2 HASS Incursion

Year 2 students were taken back in time this week and explored some older technologies at their incursion. Students experienced some hands on fun making butter and juice, dressing up to enjoy a tea party, using a typewriter and slate, using a washboard and learning old games. This has allowed the students to gain a better understanding as to how the changes in technologies have affected our daily lives.

We attended our History Incursion at the hall. Some items that we saw from the past were elastics, typewriter, irons and skipping ropes. I enjoyed playing with the spinning toys that you push really hard and typing my name with the typewriter. My favourite part was playing elastics in the games area, it was really fun. Something new I did was tasted all the types of tea, I really liked the ginger and lemon grass. -Henry W (2S)

I loved making butter and eating it on bread, yum! It was interesting to play with the old toys. I loved the tea party but I didn’t like the tea. I liked washing the clothes on the washboard with my friends. - Selin Y (2D)

BOOST – Year 2 and Year 4

The Year 2 and 4 Boost cycle focussed on improving writing, in particular sentence structure for year 2 and paragraph writing for year 4 students.

Some of the year 2 students used their sentence writing skills and their imagination to write a short narrative. These were published and have been sent to the library for others to read and enjoy. The improvement of all students’ writing continues to be a school priority and the willingness to share writing and seek and respond to feedback is integral to this plan.

Aspley Speaks Out

It is time for our school’s annual speaking competition “Aspley Speaks Out”.

At Aspley State School, we believe it is important to provide opportunities for students to develop their varied talents. We are proud to promote Aspley Speaks Out as a program that enables all children in Years 5 and 6 to set attainable goals, produce quality speeches and appreciate their own and their peers’ talents and achievements.

This term, students have presented speeches to their class peers, from which five students from each class were chosen to present at the semi-finals held over the past two Mondays.

Each of the semi-finalists did a wonderful job entertaining fellow classmates, teachers and judges with their interesting, amusing and heartfelt speeches. We are pleased to announce the finalists for Aspley Speaks Out 2018, in no particular order;

Year 5

Year 6

Congratulations to all musicians on the music tour last week. It was truly a wonderful experience and a highlight in our music calendar. I am so proud of the efforts of all our students and the way they represented our school. Wherever we played, the students were complimented on their behaviour, their skills and their professionalism. Thanks to the wonderful parents who joined us for the ride. It was brilliant to have you part of the team. Special thanks to Gwen Hinds and Amanda Jerram for all their hard work in assisting to coordinate the tour. It is exhausting, but rewarding work.

Early Act Club

(Managed by Mr Grove and Mrs Wright).

As part of the preparation and lead up to the club’s Term 3 project – support of and donations to, RSPCA – the club was very pleased to welcome its Senior Media Advisor for Qld, Mr Michael Beatty. Mr Beatty spoke to the children for a short time, informing them of the huge number of animals they care for annually, with a large proportion being able to be brought back to health and then re-housed. RSPCA continues to seek out willing foster carers.

Due to the promotion at school assembly by means of power point presentations prepared by the students and quality posters for posting around the school and on collections bins, a wonderful response was achieved for the collection old blankets and towels (and some new items!) as well as some nonperishable pet foods, during the week of 3 – 7 Sept.

The club would like to sincerly thank all who donated so generously, for the welfare of the animals in the care of RSPCA.

Acknowledgement is certainly given to the students of Earlyact who showed their commitment to this project and continue to understand the importance of caring for all living things in their environment.

Exciting News for Year One Students

Following a successful trial with 1B this term, the remaining year one classes are now borrowing two home readers from the library as part of their weekly library lesson. This change offers several benefits as students now have a wider range of texts from which to select their home reader and it also allows us to better track resources.

Your child’s teacher has supplied the library with their Home Reading Level. This is two levels below their in-class Instructional Level of Reading. The books your child is bringing home to read to you should not have too many difficult words in them. The texts should be at a level that allows your child to focus on their expression and fluency while reading. If you have any queries or concerns about your child’s level of home reading, please see your child’s class teacher.

Your support in assisting your year one student to remember their waterproof library bag on their designated day/s, see below, is appreciated. Please note that some year one classes have chosen to come to the library for a ten minute time-slot on a second day, either Monday or Friday, to change their home readers.

Last Day for Borrowing This Term

So that our library collection can be accounted for, yesterday, Thursday 13 September, was the last day for borrowing this term and we are asking for all books to be returned by Wednesday 19 September. There will be no borrowing from the school library over the school holiday period; instead, we would encourage students to continue to read through the access to DET online books, home collection, classroom collections, or visiting the Brisbane City Council library for borrowing. Lost or Overdue Books

Thank you to those families who have been unearthing missing library books and returning them to the library as this ensures that we have resources that are available for others to use. Overdue Notices are printed every second week and given to class teachers for the students in their class who have overdue library books. If the book is not returned, then an invoice is generated and sent home via the parent’s email address to assist in the replacement of the missing book/s.

Caring for our books by always using a Waterproof Library Bag.

This term in their Library Lessons, students in Prep and Year One have been learning how to care for their library books. One of the easiest ways we can do this is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing from the library. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag or a plastic folder is appreciated. The Uniform shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

Library Opening Hours

The library is open every morning before school from 8:00 – 8:30am for parents to bring their children to borrow. After borrowing, the student must return to the waiting area at the hall. The Library is also open for student borrowing every day after school until 3:15pm, excluding Tuesday. We are also open at first break playtime. Please remember that your child can only borrow if they have a waterproof library bag with them. A plastic folder or a calico/cotton bag is not suitable and students will not be able to borrow from the collection using these items.

Coles Sports for Schools

Thank you to our school community for your enthusiastic participation in the Coles Sports For Schools promotion. This year we received over 74 000 vouchers and these were used to select a variety of sports equipment for use in our school programs. These items were recently received and are displayed in the photo below.

ICAS

The results for the English test are back and will be presented to students on Monday 17 September during our weekly assembly.

Even though the term may be winding down, the P&C are picking up momentum with the planning of our Events calendar and Fundraising goals for 2019. We will be seeking the P&C’s endorsement for activities, so if you have any thoughts about what you would like to see our P&C do next year, please communicate with us at pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au or via our Facebook page (@AspleySSPandC). If you have a talent for event co-ordination and can assist, we’d love to hear from you!

Last weekend, Barb, Judith and I were grateful for the opportunity to attend the P&C’s Qld Conference in Brisbane where we got to mingle with parents and business providers from P&Cs all over the state. We will be providing feedback at the next P&C meeting (23 October), but Judith has generously reflected on her experience below:

"I would like to thank the P&C Community for providing me with the opportunity to attend the conference this year. As a long-term member of the P&C, I was interested to meet other people as invested in their school and children as our community is.

I attended sessions around engagement and volunteering in today’s world and how times have changed. What I have learnt from this conference is that parent engagement on all levels is still highly important not only for the school but also for our children’s social and emotional development. Being an active member of a school community harbors well-being on all levels. Interaction is important and purposeful and mutually beneficial for all involved. It instils pride and positivity for your children, seeing your family involved, and satisfaction, growth and pride for a parent/care giver providing support for both the children and the school. It provides immeasurable practical and financial benefits to the school and staff.

I have learnt that no matter how big or small, whether it is participation in the classroom, tuckshop, school grounds or the next fundraiser, for 1 hour, 1 day or once in a year, it all counts and can make more of a difference to your child and the school than you have ever thought. I look forward to working with the P&C into the future and meeting new faces the next time I help out around the school."

Finally, on behalf of the Association, I would like to congratulate Elaine Chu, on her successful application of the Aspley SS P&C Association Student Representation Award. This award policy was ratified by the P&C earlier this year, and awards students who achieve and represent our school at State and National levels, across all areas (whether it be sport, academically, or culture and the arts). For more details about this policy, please see P&C Documents on the school website.
