“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.” International Baccalaureate Mission Statement

Come along and hear from guest speaker, Mr Jeremy Otto, Dean of Learning, Qld Academy of Maths, Science and Technology. Armistice - 100 Years On

On 11 November 2018 the world will fall silent to mark the conclusion of the First World War, the Great War, which ravaged Europe for more than four years and claimed the lives of more than 16 million people, including 60,000 Australians.

In the aftermath, the international community joined together in condemnation of such massive and widespread bloodshed. It was vowed that Germany should never again emerge as a belligerent nation capable of disrupting peace in Europe. Tragically, WWI would not be the ‘war to end all wars’ as the epithet predicted. History has borne witness to the consequences.

The commemoration of Armistice is foremost about remembering the millions who fought and died during the conflict. Each combatant and civilian life lost was one too many – a principle often obscured by the unprecedented bloodshed. Remembrance requires that we tell the stories of those who served, many of whom never returned.

The Armistice Centenary Concert

Aspley State School will host the The Armistice Day Centenary Concert at the school hall on Wednesday 7 November commencing at 6.30 pm. This concert has been made possible through the generous support from the RSL (Qld Branch) Geebung Zillmere Bald Hills and Aspley Sub Branch. A number of free tickets will be provided to each participating school for the invitation of parents and school / community members.

Students from Aspley State School will be performing:

  • New Zealand National Anthem –Senior Choir with Mrs McIntyre;
  • Advance Australia Fair –Senior Choir with Mrs McIntryre;
  • The Other Side – Senior Choir with Mrs McIntyre;
  • A New Dawn – String Orchestra with Mrs Jerram; and,
  • The Music Captains will be the comperes for this evening.

On the concert night we will welcome special guests and the students and community members from Aspley East State School, Aspley Special School, Bald Hills State School, Geebung State School, Geebung Special School, St Dympna’s Primary School, St Flannan’s Primary School, and St Kevin’s Primary School.

Armistice Art Project –Doves of Peace

The Year 5 students from Aspley State School have been excited to work with renown artist, Wendy Hollier, to create individual art works, Doves of Peace and three large murals to commemorate the Armistice centenary. Funding from the Australian Government’s, Armistice Centenary Programme has made this learning opportunity possible. The three murals will be presented to the Geebung Zillmere Bald Hills Aspley RSL, Hon Wayne Swan, MP Member for Lilley, and, Aspley State School.

Australians in the Great War - Donate a Bear to your School

The team behind Bears to School believes in remembering and sharing these stories. We want to remind Australia of the debt it owes to the 420,000 volunteers who enlisted and to tell their stories to a new generation, a century on. Donating these bears to school will ensure that our children learn about these stories of service in an appropriate and engaging manner, thereby keeping the Anzac memory alive.

You can purchase a bear for $99.00 to donate to Aspley State School through the website:

https://anzacbears.com.au/remembering-armistice-through-learning/?utm_source=Anzac+Bears+-+NFP+Registrations&utm_campaign=7659084d89-Bears+to+School+Newsletter1_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_0541815e62-7659084d89-42073693&mc_cid=7659084d89&mc_eid=1b915e7016

Australian Curriculum –Literacy and Numeracy Development

Literacy and Numeracy development influences students’ success in most aspects of schooling. The National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions are a resource that describe how literacy and numeracy learning develops over time.

There are two progressions – one for literacy and one for numeracy. Each is divided into sub elements that give a detailed description of the typical developmental path in particular aspects of literacy and numeracy. The progressions may assist parents to understand the way literacy and numeracy skills develop and to identify the particular literacy and numeracy skills their children are using or are currently learning.

A video and information about the Literacy and Numeracy Progressions is available for parents at the link below:

https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/resources/national-literacy-and-numeracy-learning-progressions/a-guide-to-the-progressions-for-parents/

Parents & Citizens’ Meeting

Global Goals Primary Forum

The Global Goals Primary Forum is a full-day design sprint for Years 6 students, designed to deepen their understanding of local and global issues and develop their global competence. The challenge put to students is how might we design sustainable community services for the future. Adopted by world leaders in 2015, the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (also known as the Sustainable Development Goals) aim to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change by 2030. The forum brings together around 70 students to explore the Global Goals and propose innovative solutions to achieve positive change using design thinking. Rather than trying to cover all 17 goals in a day, students focus on a smaller interconnected set of goals relevant to the challenge at hand, namely Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Throughout the forum, students work collaboratively in teams of 6 to design or re-design a sustainable community service that would help achieve these Global Goals by 2030.

Habits of Mind

The Habits of Mind are an identified set of 16 problem solving, life related skills, necessary to effectively operate in society and promote strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance, creativity and craftsmanship. The understanding and application of these 16 Habits of Mind serve to provide the individual with skills to work through real life situations that equip that person to respond using awareness (cues), thought, and intentional strategy in order to gain a positive outcome.

Each week at Assembly, we have been focussing on one Habit to practice at school. This term the students will be asked to remember the focus Habit for a period of two weeks. The focus Habit for weeks one and two is Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations. This Habit reminds students to build on what they have learned, and already know, to further their understanding. Clever people learn from experience. When confronted with a new and perplexing problem they will often draw from their past. They can often be heard to say, “This reminds me of….” or “This is just like the time when I…”

Too often students begin each new task as if it were being approached for the very first time. Teachers are often inviting students to recall how they solved a similar problem previously and students often take time to remember. Students need to be assisted to make connections between what has already been experienced and how to apply that knowledge to a new situation. Confusion often arises, as the new situation may not be the same as what has been experienced. It is the processes used to solve a problem that need to be applied to new learning opportunities.

Active School Travel

Aspley State School have previously been involved with Brisbane City Council's Active School Travel program. The aims of the program are to change travel behaviour to and from school. Families are encouraged to walk, cycle, scooter, car pool or use public transport and even use our outside school hours care (before and after school care) to reduce traffic congestion around schools.

Traffic congestion and safe travel around our school are very important concerns. It is for this reason that we had decided to continue to promote Active School Travel after our engagement with Brisbane City Council ceased. Each class participates in Active School travel and records data that is collated to determine which class is the most active. A ‘star’ trophy is awarded to the most active class each week. At the end of each term, the class with the most weekly awards receives acknowledgement and prizes. At the beginning of Term three, it was decide to award two trophies. One for Prep to Year Two and one for Years Three to Six.

We would like to congratulate 2D and 3M for being the most active classes for Term Three. Each student in both classes has received a bag of Active School Travel products. Well done 2D and 3M!

Year 3 Camp

We are all looking forward to the first camp experience for the Year 3 students who are excited to be given this opportunity to participate in this overnight experience. To make it a successful experience we are requesting parent volunteers. The following tasks need to be fulfilled:

  • Wednesday 24/10/18 – Two volunteers are required to bake muffins/pikelets in the tuckshop
  • Thursday 25/10/18 4:30pm- Two-Four volunteers to assist staff in preparing, cooking and serving dinner
  • Friday 26/10/18 7am- Two volunteers to assist staff in preparing and serving breakfast.

If you are able to assist please contact Donna Boaler at dboal2@eq.edu.au

Prep Information Night

We had a great turnout on Wednesday, September 21 for our Prep Information night. This night was geared towards all our new families meeting other Prep families, the P and C and the school Principal, the admin team, the current Prep teachers, the speech and occupational therapists and the Tuckshop Convenor. They also had an opportunity to find out more about the school’s direction and getting to know how our school does ‘business’.

We had great feedback about the night and useful suggestions for next year.

If you have a child coming to Prep next year and they have been enrolled, please call into the office into collect a Prep goodie bag with information to help with Prep readiness (if you did not attend the information evening on 21 September).

Date Claimer:

December 5 – Prep Orientation at the school hall from 9 am to 1015am.

Term 4

Broad smiles greeted us on Monday morning, the first day back this term. As you are well aware, it is a very busy term with swimming, footsteps and sport. It is good to see that the students have all settled into their learning.

We have many fun activities this term but also assessments to check where the children are at and strategies to put in place to help them.

Please support us by ensuring that the students are here every day and on time as Every day Counts!

BOOST news

This term, the Year One and Two students will be accessing the BOOST cycle.

The Year One students will be learning to improve their writing skills by working on sentence structure. They will learn to make their simple sentences into complex and compound sentences. Focus will also be given to punctuation and spelling.

The Year Two’s will be working on Question and Answer Relationships (QAR). In this activity, children will learn to identify if the answer is right, there in the text. If they have to think and search for the answer. What the author is trying to convey(author and me) or what they think the answer may be (on your own) bringing their own knowledge about the topic into the response.

Please ask your children to explain what they are learning or better still to ‘teach’ you. They will consolidate their own learning if they articulate it to someone.

Curriculum News

Vocabulary Development.

Congratulations to Year 3, who placed 13 th in the recent Word Mania competition. This competition is conducted through Literacy Planet and invites schools to register and students to make words from digital letter tiles in a timed period. During this three week period of national competition, 5 million games were played with over 115 million words built!

Our Year 4 cohort made a mighty impression, placing 9th in the nation.

Congratulations to all for your participation. We look forward to improving on our rankings next year through our continued focus on developing students’ vocabulary.

8 Word Stories

Our school priority for learning continues to be a focus on improving writing. As this newsletter goes to print, the student entries for our Term Four, weekly 8 Word Story are being judged. Building on last year’s success, 8 Word Stories allow students an opportunity for daily writing, aiming to increase motivation by using 8 words to convey an image linked to the chosen topic. It’s harder than you may think and already there has been a considerable amount of interest as seen through the large number of entries for our first topic, caring. Winning stories are to be displayed for a week on the community electronic billboard on the corner of Horn Road and Maundrell Terrace and internally through the electronic notices. We look forward to sharing the winning entries with you.

Club Kidpreneur Market Day

30 amazing Year 5/6 students have been participating in an entrepreneurial program to build a business, develop a product, market their product, sell at market day and donate profits to a social cause of their own group’s choice.

This Market Day is to be held in the school hall next Tuesday 16thOctober during the morning session. The groups have worked very hard to prepare for this day and you may have seen posters advertising their businesses around the school.

We would appreciate it if children could bring some money to spend on this day (products range between $1-$5 and there are ten stalls to choose from).

We look forward to a successful market day.

Music News

Many people have a favourite piece of orchestral music, even if they do not think of themselves as a classical music fan. Maybe something you heard as a child, or known from a film or linked with a big life event? It is music that occupies a special place.

In a free concert performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, as a part of the 2018 Brisbane Festival, organizers selected members of the public to be special guests of the Festival and were invited onto the stage to share the personal significance of a piece of music they had chosen. Then, sitting next to the conductor, the special guests witnessed the full force and beauty of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra playing their selected music.

This magical performance event invited one of our young budding musicians from Aspley State School, Bronte B, to participate in this magical musical experience… here is Bronte’s story of her musical adventures at Symphony For Me!

Symphony for Me – Bronte B

We sat down on the couch, I felt anxious and excited – I was about to hear my favourite symphony “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg. My mum and I were on the stage with the conductor and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at QPAC Concert Hall. There was a camera filming us & the orchestra, we were being watched by 1500 people. When the music started to play, I felt like I was Peter running through the forest and away from the King’s troll army. Listening to this piece made my heart race like crazy! I like this piece because 1) Mum and I both like it, 2) it uses our imaginations, 3) we both first heard it in year 2 at school.

Mum entered the Brisbane Festival’s “Symphony for Me” competition and this was our prize. Along with 13 other people, adults and kids, we all got to hear our favourite pieces. There were 10 pieces played and two of them you might know; “Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter and the “Main Theme” from Star Wars. After the event, I met a female French horn player named Lauren Manuel. She was from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and she was excited to hear I wanted to start learning to play the French Horn in year 4. It was a great but long night, and this was a once in a lifetime chance.

Lost or Overdue Books

Thank you to those families who have been unearthing missing library books and returning them to the library as this ensures that we have resources that are available for others to use. Overdue Notices are printed every second week and given to class teachers for the students in their class who have overdue library books. If the book is not returned, then an invoice is generated and sent home via the parent’s email address to assist in the replacement of the missing book/s.

Caring for our books by always using a Waterproof Library Bag.

Students in Prep and Year One have been learning how to care for their library books. One of the easiest ways we can do this is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing from the library. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag or a plastic folder is appreciated. The Uniform shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

Library Opening Hours

The library is open every morning before school from 8:00 – 8:30am for parents to bring their children to borrow. After borrowing, the student must return to the waiting area at the hall. The Library is also open for student borrowing every day after school until 3:15pm, excluding Tuesday. We are also open at first break playtime. Please remember that your child can only borrow if they have a waterproof library bag with them. A plastic folder or a calico/cotton bag is not suitable and students will not be able to borrow from the collection using these items.

Sparrows

Over three terms the Aspley Sparrows have been passing, juggling, dribbling, trapping, striking and shooting balls with enthusiasm, energy and passion. Each Thursday morning Years 4-6 students would eagerly run onto the oval to learn new skills through carefully selected drills our amazing coaches had planned. We want to thank the following parents who gave up their precious time to guide, motivate and celebrate in the joy of the world’s most popular game with our students! We would like to recognise Mrs Leigh-Ann Rohde, Mr Andrew Revie, Mr Brett Testa, Mrs Cindy Le Vieux, Mrs Susan Impey, Mr Haami Azordegan, Mrs Felicity Turner, Mr Graham Meiklejohn and Mr Jerry Edwards. Their knowledge, commitment and guidance has been vital for the Sparrows soccer program to function.

On the last Thursday of Term Three, a Year 5 boys team, Year 6 girls team and boys team competed at The Eagles Cup held at Aspley State High School. The boys played well, displaying team work and intensity however it was our Year 6 girls who took out first place in the competition. The girls were fierce, focused and united to win their matches.

Congratulations to every Sparrow who attended the competition and represented our school with pride

Chaplaincy

Welcome back to Term 4! Thank you very much to all the students and families who have returned their Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. They are filled with beautiful gifts that will make a difference to the lives of children living in poverty. We are looking forward to having all the shoeboxes returned by the end of Week 2, Term 4 (by Friday 19 October). You can return them to Chappy in the Blue Room, to Miss Lisa Oliver in 6O or Mrs Jane Sampson in Prep S. Thanks again!

P&C News

We hope all our students and staff enjoyed a break from the regular routine and are ready for the last term of 2018! Due to me being away a number of weeks this term, I have not scheduled a P&C Communi-Tea – however members of the exec team will be at Swimming Club, the Working Bee and the PUGS, so if you have any thoughts, questions or feedback, I invite you to find us at any of these events.

Here’s our fortnight’s 1…2…3 for the P&C:

  1. ASPLEY SWIMMING CLUB starts this Sunday at 2pm at our school pool. Aspley Swimming Club celebrates its 52nd year this year and has grown from strength to strength. The Swimming Club encourages fun, friendship and helps build a passion for swimming. If you would like to see what it’s all about, come along to the first meet this Sunday, or join us regularly every Friday night from 6.30pm. Massive thanks to our Aspley Swimming Club Committee led by the amazing Angela Johnson and Susan Brown, and to all the parent volunteers who help each week.
  2. WORKING BEE – Saturday October 20 from 1pm; and Sunday October 21 from 8.30am.
Will you help our school shine? – We will be looking for some parent helpers to complete a few odd jobs here and there for the last working bee of the year. Just an hour or two makes a huge difference and we’ll end each session with a casual get-together of drinks and nibbles. Please sign up at the link below.
  3. P&C MEETING – Tuesday 23 October
The second last meeting of the year. The Parent Representative for the School Council will be voted upon and we will also share thoughts for 2019 – we would love your input. Meet at 7pm in the library. All welcome.

And a message from Barb, our Vice-President and Sustainability Warrior:

With only 3 weeks until the Pop Up Garage Sale on Sunday 28 October at 11:30 - 3pm, we are still looking to have more tables occupied. If you have any preloved treasures that you would like to make some $$$ from, why not join us? This also includes anyone who is crafty and would like to sell items. Christmas isn’t far away!

Table hire is only $25, and the funds raised will go towards our school gardens for items like a much-needed garden shed and tools.

A great opportunity to get your kids involved, my year 5 child will be selling items to help fund her year 6 camp next year.

~Barb Rushe

PS: We are still collecting Oral Care Waste (toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes or dental floss packaging). Barb will be up at the Hall from 8.20am on select Fridays. Camp Australia also has a collection bin for students attending their program.

COMMUNITY

Moreton Bay Wetlands Expo

Free Family Friendly Fun!

Do you have students with a passion for marine science? Or their local environment? We have just the right event for them: visit the UQ Biodiversity Roadshow and Moreton Bay Wetlands Expo at the Deception Bay foreshore!

The UQ Biodiversity Road Show is a free, mobile, interactive exploration designed to engage students of all year levels with the biological diversity of our local marine region. This time we are joining forces with other community organisations to bring you the Moreton Bay Wetlands Expo, a celebration the 25th anniversary of the declaration of the Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetlands.

What’s on offer at the UQ Biodiversity Roadshow?

  • Join our team of experienced marine scientists on a guided coastal habitat walk (register for a tour; it’s free but places are limited)
  • Examine live sea creatures in touch tanks and learn about their biology and ecological habitats
  • Discover the microscopic undersea world at our microscopy station
  • Touch real shark jaws and coral skeletons and learn about their occurrence in Moreton Bay
  • Tune in to underwater videos of life in the Bay and recordings of dolphins, snapping shrimp and singing fish
  • Test your knowledge with our marine trivia quizzes and games

The UQ Biodiversity Roadshow presents marine science in an engaging, hands-on format. It is also a fun environment for students to meet like-minded people and connect with UQ marine scientists.

The Wetlands Expo involves a dozen other local organisations who will be sharing their knowledge and passion for Moreton Bay through talks, displays and participatory activities.
