PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Playground
Construction of the new early years playground will begin next week! The children are very excited. I am sure they will enjoy watching the construction take place.
This project has required: significant drainage works on the school site to minimise the overflow of water in wet weather; the removal of the dental unit; relocation of existing play equipment; and, significant earth works to prepare the site. This week, the P and C Association has kindly donated the funds to install synthetic turf under the tree to make a robust surface for early learning.
Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you parents / carers for your support of the recent book fair. The Scholastic Book Fair provided the opportunity for children to purchase quality, reading materials. Book fair sales were $2 418. This provides 846 credits, to purchase class readers and new home reading materials for the library.

It also includes shared materials e.g. textbooks, novels, dictionaries, atlases, reference materials production of relevant workbooks and other materials relevant to the student year level.
2019 Classes and Step Up Day
On Wednesday 12 December 2019, students will visit their new teacher and classroom from 9.15 am – 10.15, as part of Step Up Day. This initiative gives students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their new teacher, classroom and new classmates. Please note that if student enrolments change, this may necessitate the restructure of classes in early 2019. Where this may be undesirable, it is sometimes necessary.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme
Aspley State School is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and is pursuing authorization as an IB World School.
IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.
*Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
During the January 2019 Student Free Days teachers will participate in a three day, professional development course Making the Primary Years Programme Happen, where they will learn more about the International Baccalaureate (IB) -Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the associated practices and standards. Teachers will increase their understanding of the IB mission statement, transdisciplinary inquiry as a pedagogical approach, and will learn how to plan, teach and assess the Australian and Queensland Curriculums, through a structured, inquiry approach.
For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit the IB website.

Recently, we had two illegal entries to the school and one entry included a small fire set by the intruders! If you see anything, or anyone, acting suspiciously at school, please report this to Crime Stoppers Ph: 1800 333 000.
Thank You Parents and Citizens’ Association Members
The Parents and Citizens Association is a vital part of the school. Their contribution and your support enhances the spirit of the school and provides an enriched environment for our young people. The P&C have achieved much this year, with $30 000 to the refurbishment of two classrooms, $40 000 towards the new playground; $80 sports equipment for chaplaincy and $10 000 for synthetic turf in the new playground area. Congratulations to the P & C members for their hard work in recent years that has enabled this significant contribution to make our school a wonderful place of learning for the children.
Volunteers Afternoon Tea
On behalf of the school community, I wish to convey a very special thank you to the dedicated school volunteers at Aspley State School. There are many people who regularly contribute to our school in many ways e.g. school banking, working bees, tuckshop, reading groups, class help, excursions, school council, Aspley Foundation, P & C Association etc. As a token of our greatest appreciation, school volunteers are invited to attend the Volunteers Afternoon Tea to be hosted by the hospitality students at the school hall on 5th December 2019 at 2.00 pm – 3.00 pm.
Olympics Unleashed
Olympics Unleashed brings Olympians, Paralympians and athletes aspiring to compete at Tokyo 2020 into Queensland primary schools to inspire and motivate students.
It aims to bring out the ‘Olympic spirit’ in all students to pursue their passion, whether that’s in sport, the classroom, the playground or at home. Athletes will have time after the presentation for photographs and autographs with students and staff.
On Monday 19 November 2018 during the 45-minute presentation for students, Olivia Tauro (Athletics Champion) shared life lessons on goal setting, building resilience and overcoming challenges.
Please see attached her Athlete Profile.
Olympics Unleashed is provided at no cost to schools and is supported by the Queensland Government and the Australian Olympic Committee.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
Orientation Morning for Prep 2019 on Wednesday 5 December
All newly enrolled Prep students and their families are invited to attend an Orientation Morning from 9 am to 10:15am at the school hall.
MSP photographers will be onsite at this session to take a photo of the new Prep students for their classroom teachers.
For the parents, it is a great opportunity to build new relationships with other parents from your child’s classroom and make a connection with their teacher.
For the students, this session helps them meet their teachers, ‘check out’ the Prep classroom and meet some new children to form friendships.
At this session, the Prep families will receive a pack with some handouts about the Prep year and activities to do with the Prep child.
Eleven more sleeps to go!
P-3 Christmas Concert
On Friday 7 December, the Preps, Year Ones, Twos and Threes will be delighted to showcase to their families and friends what they have been learning at Footsteps during our P-3 Christmas Concert. It will be the last concert for the Year 3’s as they go to upper school next year.
Claim this date in your diaries, as you will not be disappointed with the performance.
Step Up Day
On Wednesday December 12, all Prep to Year 5 students will be involved in Step Up Day
Students will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with their new classrooms and their teachers so new friendships and connections can be made before the 2019 school year.
Letters announcing new classes and teachers will go out to families in the next few weeks.
Finishing strong
Please have conversations with your child/children regarding the next few weeks of the school year. It is still important to keep working until the last day.
We have many fun activities happening in the next few weeks but we need children to remain focused and continue their learning journey during this time. They need to keep up with reading every night, number fact repetition for easy recall, learning of their sight words to assist in their writing and homework.
These are non-negotiables for every child as it helps build discipline and adds to their learning behaviours.
Compton Garden and Music tour
It was with great pride that I attended the Compton Gardens and Hypermarket music performances this week. The students in the Senior Concert Band, Stage Band and Senior Choir performed with a high level of professionalism, skill and joy. Not only were the performances exceptional so were the students’ manners, behaviour and engagement with their audiences, especially at Compton Gardens. This tour gave the students the opportunity to perform to a wider audience and I congratulate Ms Christine Jabs and Mrs Briony McIntyre for facilitating this event. The quality of music teaching at Aspley State School was evident to many during the performances. The school received a phone call from Lyn (Community member who was at the Hypermarket) to congratulate all staff and children on a very professional performance. Well done!

Year 6 – End of Year Events
Planning for the graduation activities are in full swing and the students are getting excited. A friendly reminder that any payments for these activities need to be made by the due date and no later. If you are paying on line or through QParents, please be mindful that payments may take up to three business days to process.
Habits of Mind
For the remainder of the year the Habit of Mind focus will be on Thinking about your thinking (metacognition). When you think about your thinking, you are able understand you thought processes, your problem solving strategies and the effect these have on others.

Curriculum News
8 Word Story Competition
Our 8 Word Story Competition continues to generate a large number of entries from not only students but also staff and parents!
A reminder that entries are to be 8 words. The story is not a definition of the topic word. Instead it aims to show what the topic sounds like, looks like or feels like in 8 words without using the actual topic word. It is not as easy as it sounds!
All entries are to be submitted by close of business Wednesday via email: aspleywriters@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
You can continue to read the winning entries on our electronic noticeboards and on locations around the school. Congratulations to all of our weekly winners.
Home reading
Home reading is a strategy to encourage positive reading behaviours. It allows students to read easy material in a more phrased and fluent manner to build reading confidence and stamina. Your interactions also help foster a life-long love of reading. As students approach high school they are required to read across many subject areas nightly and reading stamina is certainly needing to be built in the primary years. Reading to your child helps build knowledge of English sentence structures and builds an exploration of new vocabulary, favourite authors and information about new areas of interest. We acknowledge and thank you for the effort you take each night to support your child’s reading development, recording his/her progress in the Home Reading Journal or homework log. A certificate of recognition for students who have achieved 200 nights and over of home reading is planned in the final week of school to recognise this marvellous achievement. Please ensure your child/ren bring in their reading log consistently so that this information can be gathered and actioned next week.
Art with Year 5
This term, year 5W have completed some interesting works of art. Below are examples of some of these. The children used oil pastels, water colour and acrylic paint. Collages were completed using a variety of paper to best enhance the designs.

Technology in Year 3
In Design Technology, grade three investigated the needs and opportunities for designing a product out of waste. They worked individually to design, make and evaluate their designed solution. The results were innovative, socially and environmentally responsible design projects, which demonstrated a creative desire for sustainability and/or a cost effective approach.
Year 2 Spark Lab Excursion
On Thursday 15 November 2018 we went to an amazing place called SparkLab. We had so much fun playing with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities, while learning at the same time.
At SparkLab we got to do may different things to do with STEM. We got to touch electricity through a ball and watch an experiment that used salt, tomato sauce, vinegar, a tablet and baking soda. The tablet made it explode and we were all oohhhhing and aaahhhhing.
Mr Simpson could even lift an 80kg fridge by using a rope connected to a lever!
At the end of the day everyone gathered for a group photo. We all decided to say a big thank you to Ms Gothman who led the organisation of this fabulous excursion. We thanked our wonderful parent helpers and the team at SparkLab.
Thank you Ms Gothman, we enjoyed the excursion and wish to go there again!

PAYMENTS FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Aspley State School has a variety of options available to parents and caregivers to pay for the many excursions and activities in which your child participates.
For each activity or excursion that involves the collection of a payment, the school chooses a due date for payment. We make this date as close as possible to the date of the activity, taking into consideration cut-off times for final numbers. This is usually one week prior to the excursion, unless it involves overnight stays, which requires more notice to the provider. We are unable to accept payments after this due date because the cut off time is the absolute latest we can adjust numbers.
The school has many activities and excursions happening and often the due dates for payments overlap. A due date is set so the office staff have sufficient time to reconcile payments and provide to the teachers a participant list and relevant medical details. The due date will always be clearly marked on the letter sent home to the parent / carer. It is the parent / carers responsibility to ensure that the payment is made on or before the due date. If you require a payment plan, please contact the office BEFORE the due date, so a plan can be arranged.
Student Absences
ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.
The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.
We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

Socceroos V North Korea
Football Australia selected 3H Aspley State School student Dana G to lead out Korea and the Socceroos last Saturday at Suncorp stadium. Dana grew up in South Korea and got the chance to play football on the ground at half time. What a wonderful experience!
Library
End of Year Library Activities
The school year may be starting to wind down, but here in the library, we are gearing up to offer some exciting activities in the final few weeks. We have Christmas themed craft activities planned and a special guest is coming to live in the library for weeks nine and ten. Watch for the photos of our mischievous guest in the next newsletter.
Lost or Overdue Books
Thank you to those families who have been unearthing missing library books and returning them to the library as this ensures that we have resources that are available for others to use. Overdue Notices are printed every second week and given to class teachers for the students in their class who have overdue library books. If the book is not returned, then an invoice is generated and sent home via the parent’s email address to assist in the replacement of the missing book/s.
At Aspley State School, we are committed to encouraging students' reading in its many different forms. Promoting responsible borrowing of our library resources is a critical element.
As we want to encourage students to read as much as possible, students who have one overdue book will be placed on Restricted Borrowing. This will allow them to borrow one book while they have one overdue book.
Students who have more than one book overdue will be unable to borrow until the overdue books are either returned or the invoice is paid (if one has been issued).
Roll Class Overdue Notices are printed fortnightly and class teachers remind students and communicate with parents via their regular communication channel e.g. Class Dojo, email, class newsletter, notes home etc.
Invoices for the replacement of the overdue book are issued via the parent's email address when it is overdue by six weeks. They are also issued by the request of a parent when the book is known to be lost or damaged.
Once the book is returned or the invoice is paid, the student will then revert to the regular borrowing allowances for their year level.
This will also apply to students who still have carry-over overdue book/s as of the start of 2019.
Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag or a plastic folder is appreciated. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.
Library Opening Hours
The library is open every morning before school from 8:00 – 8:30am for parents to bring their children to borrow. After borrowing, the student must return to the waiting area at the hall. The Library is also open for student borrowing every day after school until 3:15pm, excluding Tuesday. We are also open at first break playtime. Please remember that your child can only borrow if they have a waterproof library bag with them. A plastic folder or a calico/cotton bag is not suitable and students will not be able to borrow from the collection using these items.

Hi there, I hope everyone is going well as we come to the end of a busy term! This is a great time to celebrate the work of some unsung heroes in our community, so along with a school volunteer afternoon tea in week 9, we will be hosting representatives from the local emergency services at our school assembly on Monday the 3rd of December. They will be presented with a small gift and thankyou poster and invited to stay to observe our assembly (if they have time). We are excited to thank our emergency services for the work they do in our community! If you have any questions or would like to chat to me about anything, email me anytime on sineadt@chappy.org.au . Have a lovely week

EVENT UPDATES:
P&C Meeting 20th November: Big thank you to the members of our community who made it to our final P&C Meeting of the year. Despite my promise to keep it short and sweet, there were just a few too many things on the discussion table. The P&C have rounded up the year with a number of financial contributions to our school community, including:
- Up to an additional $10,000 to support the completion of the Early Years Playground re-build.
- Additional funding to the sustainability program to purchase and build a shed.
- Funding for equipment to assist the Chaplaincy program.
- Student representation awards gifted to a number of students who reached State and National level of achievement in 2018.
Our next P&C meeting is scheduled for 12 February 2019 (Week 3, Term 1). Please save the date now!
The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home.
We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to try and keep you updated about P&C events and school activities.
