PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

As the 2018 school year is drawing to an end we enjoy the celebrations of learning at Aspley State School. It is rewarding for the students to reflect on their learning goals and the progress they have made throughout the year. Teachers are proud of the students and how they have worked diligently to do their best and demonstrate The Aspley Way.

Welcome 2019 Prep Students

This week, we welcomed 113 new Preparatory students, who will join our school in 2019. The children attended an orientation day and were quite shy, although excited to go to their new class and meet their teacher. It is lovely to meet the new parents who are joining our school in 2019. We hope that many of new Prep students are able to meet up for a scheduled playdate in the holidays.

New Playground

The new early years playground is completed! Teachers have begun to take their classes to the playground to allow the children to be familiar with the elements of the playground. Children are learning how to interact safely by using the designated entry and exit points and to explore the challenges the playground provides. Next week, children have a year level roster for the lunchtime play, so they can enjoy this wonderful new playground.

Works to reinstate the concrete path, treat the bank to reduce erosion and the installation of synthetic turf are yet to be completed. Parents please note the school playgrounds are not to be accessed without teacher supervision.

Step Up Day

At Aspley State School we act to support all students with the transition to their new class in 2019. As part of this support, we enact Step Up Day from 9.15 am -10.15 am on Wednesday 12 December 2019.

Step Up Day provides students the opportunity to be acquainted with their new class members and meet their new teacher (where possible). During Step Up Day students will experience a learning activity in their new classroom and enable them to be more comfortable about the change to a new class. This day also provides students an opportunity be familiar with their new classroom and then confidently orientate themselves on Tuesday 29 January 2019, when they return to school.

Please note that Step Up Day and the current class structures, are based on the predicted student enrolment for 2019. Should student enrolments change in 2019, due to the arrival of a number of new in-catchment enrolments, then some class structures may need to be changed to maintain the recommended class sizes, as defined by the Department of Education Qld.

With enrolment numbers still changing, as we receive late in catchment enrolments, students will bring home a note, informing their parents / carers of their proposed class for 2019 on Wednesday 12 December 2018.

Staff News

Next week we farewell some staff as they transfer to other state schools. As employees of the Department of Education Queensland, staff are required to work across the state to ensure that all children, in all schools, have high performing teachers and the workforce meets the requirements of each school.

Next week we say goodbye to Ms Fiona Eaton, Guidance Officer. Mrs Eaton has supported students and their families in her role as Guidance Officer at Aspley State School, for the last six years. As a valued member of the Student Support Team, Mrs Eaton has worked with many diverse learners and their families and teachers. In 2019 Mrs Eaton will take up a position at Mitchelton Special School and Brisbane Central State School. On behalf of the school community, I wish to thank her for her dedication to the Aspley State School community.

In 2019, we will welcome Ms Deb Bowen, Guidance Officer, who will join our team.

Next week we farewell Mrs Elissa Molloy, Prep teacher, as she transfers to Stafford West State School. Mrs Molloy was a student at Aspley State School and then returned as a teacher during the last eight years. Mrs Molloy is a highly regarded teacher and has been the welcoming face to many Prep students. Mrs Molloy is kind and caring, and has been dedicated to see children achieve their potential. We thank Mrs Molloy for her love and joy for teaching young children, and for the warm support she gives to each child. Mrs Molloy has been an active supporter of the Sparrows Soccer program. We wish her continued success at her new school.

Also leaving Aspley State School this term is Ms Louise Coman. Ms Coman has really enjoyed her time teaching year one at Aspley State School this semester while Mrs Neil took leave. Ms Coman has enlightened students and staff with her extensive knowledge of military history and we thank her for being an active part of the recent, Armistice Centenary Concert. Ms Laura Neil will return to Aspley State School in 2019.

In 2019, we will welcome new teachers: Mrs Claire Chalk; Mr Andrew Robinson and Mrs Mary Ann Davies.

We will acknowledge the departing staff members at our last assembly for 2018 on Tuesday 11 December 2018 at 2.00 pm.

Swimming Carnival

Students from Years 3-6 enjoyed a wonderful day at the pool and were competitive at the annual swimming carnival. Students demonstrated their best efforts and were great sportsmen / sportswomen whilst cheering on their team mates. Congratulations to the age champions and the Kennedy sports house who won the competition on the day. Thank you to Mr Schmidt, PE Teacher, teachers and teacher aides, Swim Solutions staff and the parent volunteers who assisted with the event and catering on the day.

Summative Report Cards

Student summative reports (report cards) will be emailed to parents / carers on Friday 14 December 2018. Please ensure that your email address, listed with the school, is current so that you receive this important communication. If you wish to update your email address or other details please contact our school administration team via  email at  admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au

Every day counts

The holidays are fast approaching. While it may be tempting to let your child stay home for the last day, or even the last week of term, our school would prefer to see every child on every day of every term. We strongly believe children need to attend school every day to receive the most benefits from their education. Did you realise that skipping the last day of every term adds up to more than a whole term of schooling missed throughout a child’s education? Skipping a whole week of school each term means your child will miss more than 15 months of their education! For further information on the importance of regular school attendance, please visit the link below.

http://www.everydaycounts.eq.edu.au/

If students are absent from school, please contact the school office to inform the school of the absence details. Early contact with the office administration staff will avoid an unnecessary phone call or text to you. Thank you for your assistance with the early notification of student absences.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Assembly

Congratulations to Abbey B, Gina W, Imogen S and Vincent L for achieving the goal of reading sixty books during Aspley Reading Club (ARC). What a massive effort. Well done!

Congratulations to Klayton K, Gina W and Giddeon K for achieving their reading goals during Aspley Reading Club.

A huge thankyou to the Aspley Reading Club mentors from year five for their time and effort this year. Peer tutoring is a successful strategy when helping younger students with their learning. The efforts of the mentors is evident in the number of students achieving their reading targets. Congratulations to everyone involved in the Aspley Reading Club!

Assembly – Week eight and nine

Some enterprising musicians from Year 6, called “Fruit Salad”, entertained the audience with a ‘swinging’ performance in week eight.

Showcase classes

Week eight:

2K described their wondrous visit to Sparklab and their many exciting experiments.

5F have been creatively working on art pieces that demonstrate line, texture, colour, design and theme. They used a variety of mediums including: water colours, collage, oil and chalk pastels, and acrylic paint.

Week nine:

1M recited a very clever “Poetry Slam” with a warning to the year two teachers for next year. These students are ready to go in 2019.

Year Six Sea World excursion

Friday 7 December marks the start of the graduation activities for the Year 6 students. On this day the students spent time at Sea World. The students had a fun filled and exciting day.

Prep Orientation morning

On December 5, we invited 113 new Preparatory children to our school. The children were very excited to be here.

They had a wonderful time meeting other Prep children in their new class and taking part in fun activities while their parents met other families.

We were happy to meet all the new families and touch-base with some of our current families on the morning.

All the families went home with a ‘play date’ for next year, which will give them another opportunity to meet the Prep families from their classroom before school begins on January 29.

Aspley Reading Club

It has been another wonderful year for the students who attended the Aspley Reading Club this year. The students have either increased in their reading levels or increased in their confidence and risk-taking behaviours with their reading. Continued practice during the holidays will help the students maintain and build upon the work that has been done in the classroom and at the Aspley Reading Club.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 5 mentors. Their assistance has been invaluable in this process. They have contributed to this growth as the students have enjoyed reading with them.

Aspley Reading Club (ARC) is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday mornings next year.

Reading is not only what we do at school. Children are encouraged to read anywhere and at any time. During assembly, a visitor from Brisbane City Council library spoke to the children about the many activities they have on offer during the Christmas break, inviting the children to join in.

Merry Christmas

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Enjoy the break with your lovely children and we will see you on January 29, next year!

Playground

The P-2 playground is complete! The children were excited when they were allowed to use the equipment on Thursday. Over the next week the Prep students will get to play on the new playground as a transition to the area for next year.

This playground is strictly for the Year 1 and 2 students during the lunch breaks. It is not to be accessed before or after school as there is no supervision. We thank you for your support with this request.

Christmas Celebration Concert

Wow! What a wonderful performance. The children did a fantastic job. They sang their little hearts out and moved to the music in sync with the other children. The parents, carers and friends who attended, enjoyed seeing their child up on stage and joined in the singing. A roar of excitement broke out when the surprise visitor entered the hall!

The hours of practice came to fruition and it was all worth-while.

Curriculum News

Cyber safety

At Aspley State School, we strive to ensure that all students experience a safe on-line learning environment when accessing and using the internet. For this to happen the school, parents and students all have a role to play. Whilst the school is responsible for monitoring student usage at school, it is the responsibility of parents to monitor usage at home. The student has a responsibility to use the internet and communication technology safely and ethically.

We ask that parents regularly check their child’s usage of internet and messaging. Internet usage on iPads viewed by checking the history in Safari. We recommend that regular checks are made of any messaging app your child may be using. Aspley State School does not support the use of messaging apps by students.

Students should be conscious of the way they portray themselves and the way they treat others online. Interactions within digital communities and environments should mirror normal interpersonal expectations and behavioural guidelines, such as when in class or the broader community.

Students should be mindful that the content and behaviours they have online are easily searchable and accessible. This content may form a permanent online record into the future.

Parents are requested to ensure that their child understands this responsibility and expectation. The school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students supports students by providing school related expectations, guidelines and consequences.

If a student believes they have received a computer virus, spam (unsolicited email), or they have received a message or other online content that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable, they must inform their teacher, parent or caregiver as soon as is possible.

Students must never initiate or knowingly forward email or other online content containing:

  • a message sent to them in confidence
  • a computer virus or attachment that is capable of damaging the recipients’ computer
  • chain letters or hoax emails
  • spam (such as unsolicited advertising)

Students must never send, post or publish:

  • inappropriate or unlawful content which is offensive, abusive or discriminatory
  • threats, bullying or harassment of another person
  • sexually explicit or sexually suggestive content or correspondence
  • false or defamatory information about a person or organisation

Parents, caregivers and student are encouraged to read the department’s Cyber Safety and Cyberbullying guide for parents and caregivers.

Year 6

Lunch Time Fun

Students enjoyed collaborating, communicating and investigating circuitry at break time using ED BLOCKS.

Students in Mrs Mann’s class attached circuitry to fruit to make a “Fruit Piano”

Craft Club

Students have made triangular pyramid Christmas boxes; a mythical creature called ‘Picket’ from the movie, “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”; Dragon eggs from the Harry Potter movies; and they produced some Wassily Kandinsky artwork in response to music. The students have all been respectful and inclusive of others in the group during the craft sessions and it has been a delight to work with such wonderful, spirited young people.

Science

Aspley State School students have enjoyed a very busy term investigating, gaining knowledge and completing assessment tasks. The students in Year 1 made music and felt the vibration of tuning forks. The Year 6 students constructed models using electrical circuits. The Year 2 class groups observed the changes to our class silkworms. The teachers were also very excited to engage in the class activity. The Year 3 students agreed that the highlight of term 4 was carrying out investigations with melting chocolate, exploring the changes of states of matter. The students in Year 4 used a mystery map to decide how a landscape may have changed over thousands of years. The Year 4 students all agreed that the highlight of term 4 was making a model to represent the effect of water on erosion. The Year 5 classes have now been given the tools to be able to make their own periscope and spy around a corner. The students investigated light and shadow, with an emotional shadow dance video clips bringing on a few tears.

Thank you for your generosity of spirit. This album will be a treasured artefact of Aspley State School’s inaugural musical.

Finance News

PAYMENTS FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Aspley State School has a variety of options available to parents and caregivers to pay for the many excursions and activities in which your child participates.

For each activity or excursion that involves the collection of a payment, the school chooses a due date for payment. We make this date as close as possible to the date of the activity, taking into consideration cut-off times for final numbers. This is usually one week prior to the excursion, unless it involves overnight stays, which requires more notice to the provider.  We are unable to accept payments after this due date because the cut off time is the absolute latest we can confirm the number of participants.

The school has many activities and excursions happening and often the due dates for payments overlap. A due date is set so the office staff have sufficient time to reconcile payments and provide to the teachers a participant list and relevant medical details. The due date will always be clearly marked on the letter sent home to the parent / carer. It is the parent / carer responsibility to ensure that the payment is made on or before the due date. If you require a payment plan, please contact the office BEFORE the due date, so a plan can be negotiated.

Student Absences

ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

End of Year Library Activities

We had a visit from a mischievous elf who has come to stay in the library for the last two weeks of the year. So far he has “borrowed” Santa’s sleigh and taken it for a spin, stayed in bed for a day snuggled in his sleeping bag and played Twister with the Lego figures and Nutcracker! Come in everyday to see what other antics he gets up to as he helps Santa compile his ‘Naughty or Nice List!’

Summer Reading Program at Brisbane City Council Libraries

This school holidays, BCC has a Summer Reading Program running to encourage children to keep reading over the Christmas break. More information can be found at the link below:

https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/things-do-brisbane/council-venues/libraries/library-programs/summer-reading-brisbane-libraries

Overdue Student Library Books and Continued Borrowing

At Aspley State School, we are committed to encouraging students' reading in its many different forms. Promoting responsible borrowing of our library resources is a critical element. Thank you to those families who have been unearthing missing library books and returning them to the library as this ensures that we have resources that are available for others to use. As we want to encourage students to read as much as possible, students who have one overdue book will be placed on Restricted Borrowing. This will allow them to borrow one book while they have one overdue book.

Students who have more than one book overdue will be unable to borrow until the overdue books are either returned or the invoice is paid (if one has been issued). This will also apply to students who still have carry-over overdue book/s as of the start of 2019.

Please note:

  • Roll Class Overdue Notices are printed fortnightly and class teachers remind students and communicate with parents via their regular communication channel e.g. Class Dojo, email, class newsletter, notes home etc.
  • Invoices for the replacement of the overdue book are issued via the parent's email address when it is overdue by six weeks. They are also issued by the request of a parent when the book is known to be lost or damaged.
  • Once the book is returned or the invoice is paid, the student will then revert to the regular borrowing allowances for their year level.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the staff at the library on library@aspleyss.eq.edu.au.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.

One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always use a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag or a plastic folder is appreciated as we are unable to borrow resources to students without a waterproof library bag. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

Thank you

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the families of Aspley State School for helping to make me feel so welcome this year. The highlight of my week in the library is always story-time and it has been wonderful to see the growth in our Preps and Year Ones throughout the year.

We have also had a terrific year with our 2018 Library Captains, Rhianna and Alex, and our team of Library Monitors. It has been rewarding to meet with them each week and explore new skills and learning in the library environment.

Chaplaincy

The Aspley State School community was honored to have representatives from the local Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service at assembly this week. The school community presented a representative from each service with a small gift and a poster, made by students, as a token of our appreciation for the services they provide to our community. The emergency services personnel shared some messages about remaining safe during the summer holidays. The emergency services work very hard on our behalf and it was a privilege to thank them for their efforts.

Have a lovely week,

Aspley State School Foundation

With the year drawing to a close, we can all look with some pride at what we as a school family, have been able to provide for the children of Aspley State School through the Foundation.

We’ve achieved completion of two of the four projects we set ourselves in June this year – the installation of 11 block out roller blinds for two Year 6 classrooms and new carpet tiles in all the Prep classrooms.

This is a wonderful achievement for a new venture and I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to our appeal.

We are looking for suggestions for projects for 2019 – if you have any ideas, please let me know: info@aspleyssfoundation.com.au

I hope you enjoy the remaining weeks of school and I look forward to great things in 2019.

On behalf of the Trustees, thank you again for your support…..and Merry Christmas!

P&C News

There's just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is
You…….

(Can you guess the song? …The answer is further down in P&C News….)

Wow!!! What a year! When I look back at what the P&C and school community have achieved in 2018, I need to express my gratitude to all the people who have helped us do it all –

  • Eight P&C meetings
  • Three communi-tea events
  • Tim Tam & Tissues Welcome morning tea
  • Coffee Vans at Cross Country and Sports Days
  • Easter Bake Stall
  • Movie Under the Stars
  • Raffle Bonanza
  • P&C Day Breakfast and Project Unbreakable by Holt Bolt
  • Mother’s Day & Father’s Day Stalls
  • Athletics and Swimming Carnival Bake Stalls and Sausage Sizzles
  • Super Hero Disco
  • Two working bees enhancing classrooms and the school grounds
  • Established a Building Foundation that led to the re-carpeting of all Prep Classrooms (and with other projects in the works).
  • Established and gifted awards through the Student Award Representation Policy
  • Donated $50K towards completing the Early Years’ Playground
  • Enhanced the school’s sustainability and garden programs through projects such as Let’s Go Green Day, Pop Up Garage sale, Container Refund Scheme, and funding compost bins and a garden shed.
  • Supported the school events including music night, school musical Annie Jnr., Armistice Concert, Prep information night, and Grandparents’ morning tea.
  • our very successful Aspley Swimming Club
  • Managed the business operations of the Uniform Shop and Tuckshop through the amazing work of our convenors and volunteers
  • Contribution to the installation of new screens
  • Maintained communications via the newsletter, Facebook page and opt-in email.
  • Working with businesses and sponsorship in our local area
  • (and probably a heap more that my end-of-year brain is struggling to recall….)

Without the contribution of the P&C exec team, event organisers, key volunteers and staff throughout the year, all of this would not have been possible.  A massive thank you to you all – you know who you are, and without you, we wouldn’t have such a long list of achievements of which we are proud of.

As I look towards 2019, as Mariah Carey sings, all I want for Christmas IS YOU (to help in 2019)!

2019 is only 24 days away, and planning is already underway for several events. Do you want to get more involved in our Aspley community? The P&C relies on volunteers (seriously, we are ALL crazy volunteers) and several roles are vacant for 2019.

If you have a passion for giving back, a gift for sponsorship recruitment, writing grants, social media skills, event organization, organizing working bees – we NEED you. We encourage our organisers to work in groups of 2 and 3 – such a great opportunity to share ideas, skills and effort. Here is a list of events for 2019 that we need assistance with coordinating:

Term 1

  • Welcome Morning – Tim Tams & Tissues Tuesday 29 January 8am to 10am
  • Aspley Family Fun Day – Sunday 24 February
