PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Aspley State School students are settled and enjoying learning as we prepare for week four. Parents are encouraged to read the curriculum term overviews for your child’s year level. These are located on the website under the curriculum section. These term overviews highlight the Australian Curriculum and learning activities throughout term one. Students are working with their teachers, to formulate learner goals, that will direct their focus for learning.
North and North West District Swimming
Congratulations to the students who proudly represented Aspley State School this week at the North and North West District Swimming Carnival. Our congratulations to those who have achieved personal best times! Thank you to Mr Schmidt, Ms Ten Cate (Chappy) and Mrs Rossitto who supported the students on the day.
Student Leadership Investiture
We look forward to the Student Leader Investiture Ceremony to be held on Monday 18 February 2019. On this day the school captains and student leaders will be inducted in the first round of the Aspley State School leadership appointments. This special assembly will commence at 2.15 pm, Monday 18 February 2019, at the school hall. We hope that many parents can join us for this important occasion.
Halogen Young Leaders Forum
Twenty-two school captains have been invited to attend the Halogen Young Leaders Forum to be held on Friday 1 March 2019 at the Brisbane Convention Centre. This event, attended by over 2000 young leaders, provides students the opportunity to reflect on leadership, set goals and hear from renowned guest speakers who inspire young people.
Farewell
Today we farewell Mr Greg Thomas, Head of Curriculum, as he takes leave for the remainder of 2019 with plans to retire. Mr Thomas is a valued staff member and has enjoyed a rewarding 40 year career through teaching and school leadership.
During this time, Mr Thomas has been a dedicated teacher at
- Ashgrove State School
- Normanton State School
- Andergrove State School
- Mackay West State School and
- Undurba State School.
Mr Thomas has also been a Deputy Principal at Scarborough, Strathpine, Beachmere, Aspley and Narangba State Schools. During the last 11 years, Mr Thomas has acted as the Head of Curriculum at Aspley State School where he plans, co-teaches and assesses students. Mr Thomas especially enjoys seeing teachers enable their professional learning and students succeed in their learning.
During this time, Mr Thomas has shown himself to be a kind and caring educator who achieves high standards. He is of strong character and lives a moral imperative to see students and teachers achieve. His actions have touched the lives of many students, parents and educators. For this we thank him.
Mad Hair Day – Supporting Cystic Fibrosis Qld
On Friday 8 March 2019 the Student Council will invite students from Aspley State School to wear a Mad hairdo. Students are invited to wear a fun hairstyle, wig, hat or apply ribbons, clips etc. to create a new ‘do’! Hairstyling must be done at home and students are not to bring hairsprays or hair products to school. A gold coin donation on this day will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Qld charity.
For the classes who have swimming on this day, please take time to plan a hairdo or accessories that does not require coloured hairspray, as this would affect the pool water quality. Please choose a hairstyle or accessories that the children can manage easily.
Cystic Fibrosis Queensland is one of Queensland’s largest and oldest organisations supporting people living with chronic illness. Founded in 1960 by members, their mission has evolved over time to encompass more than service provision and now includes advocacy, social work support and community services, community fundraising as well as health and wellness activities and retreats.
Cystic Fibrosis Queensland supports almost 1000 people with cystic fibrosis and their families throughout Queensland, the Northern Territory and Northern New South Wales.
National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
On Friday 15 March 2019, Aspley State School will support the National Day Against Bullying and Violence. The theme is “Bullying No Way! Take action every day”. Teachers will use the resources made available from the Australian Government to support student learning within their classroom.
The Office of eSafety Commissioner has excellent parent and teacher resources and also a cyberbullying report system for Australian children.

On Tuesday 19 March 2019 Aspley State School students will be invited to participate in an incursion where they will learn a multicultural dance. Footsteps will teach students a dance which they can perform on Harmony Day. The cost of this incursion is $2.00 per student.
On Thursday 21 March 2019 Aspley State School will celebrate Harmony Day and invites students to wear either a cultural dress or the colour orange. We ask each student to bring a gold coin donation to fund a wall mural that will reflect the many cultures of Aspley State School. Parents / carers will be invited to complete a short survey to identify their culture, language and the word 'welcome' in their language as part of this project.
Sporting schools Grant
Aspley State School gratefully received funds from the Australian Sports Commission and through Sporting Schools Australia, to provide after school sports opportunities for students. In term one, we offer tennis lessons for students in years 3 / 4 and athletics workshops for students in years 5 / 6 free of charge.
For your child to participate in these workshops please see the details in the PE news and book online. Places are strictly limited to the first 30 enrolments for each program.
Parent / Student / Teacher Interviews
Parents /carers are invited to attend Parent / Teacher / Student interviews on Wednesday 20 March 2019 in the school hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with your child and their teacher to discuss your child’s learning progress. An email will be sent to parents/carers to invite them to book an appointment through the online SOBS system.
Aspley Art Affair
After the great success of the Aspley Art Affair in 2017 and in consultation with the teachers and P & C Association, the 2019 Aspley Art Affair will be held on Friday 6 September. Students will be invited to participate in an arts incursion. They will work with a professional artist, and their teacher, to learn and respond through art developing their understanding about the cross curricula theme of sustainability. Through an inquiry of marine habitats, oceans, sea life ecosystems and from the effects of pollution, the students will respond though a variety of mediums. The cost for this arts experience, materials and presentation/ framing etc. will be $25.00 per student. A permission note will be sent home next week. Payment will be due by Wednesday 3 April 2019.
Access to School
To support student safety, the small pedestrian gate, located near the new early year’s playground will be removed in the coming months. School Security, through the Department of Education are currently working towards a staged approach to make the entrances and exits to the school to be more user friendly and support the safety of children. There are future plans to install a pram friendly ramp at the front gate on Maundrell Terrace, to assist families entering the school.
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
Essential Agreement and Learner Profiles
Time flies when you are having fun! It is the end of week 3 in Term 1 already. Students should now have daily routines in place in their classrooms.
Essential agreements aligned to our four school rules have been written in each class and students are learning about the attributes of a particular Learner Profile.
Example: caring - A caring person shows empathy. A caring person listens to others and responds accordingly. A caring person respects the feelings of other people.
Ask your child what Learner Profile they are learning about in their classroom and what the attributes are.
Self-managed individual

Aspley Reading Club (ARC)
ARC will commence on Monday 4 March from 8.10am - 8.40am. The Reading Club runs out of the room outside the library. After children read to a mentor, they could be involved in a writing task. From 8:25 am onwards, the children who have read and attempted some writing will be escorted up to the hall waiting area and wait there with teacher supervision until the bell song at 8.38am.
Notes went home on Wednesday to students invited to the Aspley Reading Club. Data and teacher judgement was used to nominate students into the programme. The process is as follows:-
Round One letters sent home.
Round Two (if there are vacancies),
Round Three - Parent requests (if there are vacancies).
Once the co-payment and forms have been received, the students will receive their unique user id and password and setup instructions to access the Sunshine Classics programme. To ensure that students get the best out of this initiative, we ask that children access the reading for at least 3 times a week.
This year, we are offering 3 options.
Option 1: attend ARC on Monday and Tuesday
Option 2: attend ARC on one day only
Option 3: only access online resource
Parents have been asked to select one of the three options listed above. If circumstances change and different options are more suitable, please email canto3@eq.edu.au with your choice.
Learning is fun ----at least the students of 2G think so!
Year 2 are learning how to write independent procedures including adverbs, several noun groups and lots of detail in their writing. They are learning that a procedure is making something from start to finish and following steps along the way.
For homework, they made vegemite sandwiches and wrote the steps out in sequence. In class, they made fairy bread all together with the teacher guiding them.
I wonder what they will be making next?
Harmony Day
This year, we are excited to announce that the students will be learning and presenting different cultural dances for Harmony Day.
The Footsteps Company will be involved in the teaching of the dances on Tuesday 19 March and the performance will be on Thursday 21 March. We will have a modified lunch break to ensure that the special assembly can start at 2 pm on the day.
A payment of $2.00 will be required for students to be part of the dance programme. All students are invited to wear a cultural outfit for the day. Notes about this will come home shortly.

Student illness
Attached is a new Time Out brochure for parents and schools to manage infectious diseases. The brochure describes the symptoms commonly noted in childhood illnesses. It also has a number of links to government websites that address issues such as immunisation, disease control and public health. As autumn approaches, we are reminding the students that the best way to remain healthy during the cooler months is to maintain appropriate hygiene routines. In particular, hand washing and nose blowing procedures. The following link provides more detailed information on the management of infectious diseases and immunisation.

Finance Matters
PAYMENTS FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Aspley State School has a variety of options available to parents and caregivers to pay for the many excursions and activities in which your child participates.
For each activity or excursion that involves the collection of a payment, the school chooses a due date for payment. We make this date as close as possible to the date of the activity, taking into consideration cut-off times for final numbers. This is usually one week prior to the excursion, unless it involves overnight stays, which requires more notice to the provider. We are unable to accept payments after this due date because the cut off time is the absolute latest we can confirm the number of participants.
The school has many activities and excursions happening and often the due dates for payments overlap. A due date is set so the office staff have sufficient time to reconcile payments and provide to the teachers a participant list and relevant medical details. The due date will always be clearly marked on the letter sent home to the parent / carer. It is the parent / carer responsibility to ensure that the payment is made on or before the due date. If you require a payment plan, please contact the office BEFORE the due date, so a plan can be negotiated.
Student Absences
NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.
The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.
We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.
Active School Travel
Safety of our children is paramount and something that you as parents and caregivers, and we as educators, are constantly encouraging our children to think about. We are quick to let those in authority know when we see unsafe practices and often times take action ourselves to improve the safety of our students.
Here is our chance to really make a difference to safety around our school and prove that we can make a difference.
What is active school travel (AST)?
Brisbane city council's active school travel program aims to change travel behaviour to and from school. Families are encouraged to walk, cycle, scooter, car pool or use public transport and even use our outside school hours care (before and after school care) to reduce traffic congestion around schools.
Traffic congestion and safe travel around our school are very important concerns and are obviously shared by the majority of our families, judging by the number of phone calls and emails we receive in this regard. This program is an opportunity to use local government expertise and resources to address the issues that the school is experiencing in regards to traffic congestion which will hopefully lead to an improved situation.
The program aims to:
- reduce congestion around schools
- improve road safety around schools
- improve students' and parents' fitness and health
- reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- improve community networks.
The more people we have supporting this program will ensure the program's success.
More information is available from the Brisbane city council.
Drop and Go Zone - Horn Road

Students in Years 2 through to Year 6 participating in the Aspley Choral Program will receive this Friday, a copy of the parent information letter outlining the finer details of participating in the Aspley Choral Program.
Please note that it is important children understand that participating in the choral program is a weekly commitment, which they are expected to attend. Students who participate in the choral programs will have their lunch outside the music classroom from 1.30pm - 1.40pm before commencing choral rehearsals at 1.45pm. All choral rehearsals will take place inside the music classroom and will conclude at 2.15pm, upon which time students’ return to normal classroom routine.
We ask every chorister to sign a contract when participating in the Aspley Choral Program. This is to reinforce the importance of showing commitment to a task when participating in a performing ensemble. We ask that you speak with your child about this commitment before signing the contract. The student contract is attached to the parent information letter and we ask that it be returned to the school office on or before Friday 1st March 2019, along with cleared payment by either BPoint, QParents, Direct Deposit or cash/cheque. The choral participation payment is a one off single payment of $15.00 (regardless of how many choirs your child chooses to participate in).
We are looking forward to your child participating in the 2019 Aspley Choral Program.
MUSIC PERFORMANCE UNIFORM
The Aspley Performance Uniform is worn by ALL performing members who participate in ensembles at Aspley State School (excluding Beginner String students). This performance uniform enhances the appearance of our ensembles to look professional and polished for public performances and reflect the pride and high esteem held by our school for our talented musicians.
Students involved in these performing ensembles are required to wear the following performance uniform at all performances – Long Black Dress Pants, Long Sleeved White Dress Shirt, Black Socks and Black Shoes. The Aspley Performance Uniform will be available for purchase through the Aspley Shop. All choralists and instrumentalists will this week bring home a parent information letter regarding purchasing this required performance uniform.
To assist the Aspley Shop in placing the correct order quantities, the shop is inviting you to place an order by Friday 8th March, 2019 at the latest. Failure to do so may lead to a shortage of stock. Uniforms will be reserved and sold to parents that have returned forms before being made available to others.
Continuing String/ Woodwind/Brass/Percussion and Choral students should have the necessary uniform requirements.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Congratulations to our beginner instrumental music students for a fantastic first week of lessons with students participating in the Jumpstart programs with both Ms Jabs and Ms Jerram. Our beginners were involved in an intensive program, achieving very exciting results, focusing on notation, good technique and ensuring students have a good understanding of caring for their instrument.
Continuing Instrumental Music Students commenced their regular weekly lessons and ensembles this week with respective teachers Ms Jabs and Ms Jerram. If your child requires a copy of the instrumental music lesson timetable, please ensure that they come up to the instrumental music studio to receive these timetables.
Our Instrumental Music Teachers are Ms Christine Jabs (Woodwind/Brass/Percussion – Monday & Wednesday) and Ms Amanda Jerram (Strings – Thursday). Please remember that our Instrumental Music Teachers not only teach at Aspley, but are also working at other Education Queensland schools including Aspley East, Craigslea and McDowell Primary/High Schools throughout every school week.
All questions regarding the instrumental music program are to be directed to our Music Coordinator, Mrs McIntyre and if necessary, emails/questions will be forwarded on to the appropriate Instrumental Music Teacher.
Thank you all for a wonderful start to the Aspley Music Program for 2019 and happy music making to our young choralists and instrumentalists.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag or a plastic folder is appreciated. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

Overdue Student Library Books and Continued Borrowing
At Aspley State School, we are committed to encouraging students' reading in its many different forms. Promoting responsible borrowing of our library resources is a critical element. Thank you to those families who have been unearthing missing library books over the holidays and returning them to the library as this ensures that we have resources that are available for others to use.
As we want to encourage students to read as much as possible, students who have one overdue book will be placed on Restricted Borrowing. This will allow them to borrow one book while they have one overdue book.
Students who have more than one book overdue will be unable to borrow until the overdue books are either returned or the invoice is paid (if one has been issued). This will also apply to students who still have carry-over overdue book/s as of the start of 2019.
Please note:
- Roll Class Overdue Notices are printed fortnightly and class teachers remind students and communicate with parents via their regular communication channel e.g. Class Dojo, email, class newsletter, notes home etc.
- Invoices for the replacement of the overdue book are issued via the parent's email address when it is overdue by six weeks. They are also issued by the request of a parent when the book is known to be lost or damaged.
- Once the book is returned or the invoice is paid, the student will then revert to the regular borrowing allowances for their year level.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the staff at the library on library@aspleyss.eq.edu.au.

THE FUN STUFF PART 1
Splash and Dash/Family Fun Day – if you haven’t heard about this event by now, you really need to ask your child about the duck on Assembly just gone. All the info you need is on the registration page at
https://swimsolutions.com.au/aspley-family-fun-day/
Come along for a stroll around the oval or leisurely swim in our school pool, and help us clock up the kilometres to see how far we can travel around Australia. This is an ALL ages event. Purchase your duck for the Bank of Queensland Lucky Duck Race and cheer it along at 10am. Then join in the FREE fun activities celebrating all the amazing activities on offer at Aspley. Stay around for the raffle prize draw at midday! A preliminary timetable is set out below.
We’d like to thank our Lucky Duck race sponsor Bank of Queensland Aspley, as well as the businesses who supported this event through their donations – Aspley Bike Shop, Copper and Clove Café Aspley Hypermarket, Kinetic Kids, Office Works Aspley, Harvey Norman Aspley, Woolworth’s Westfield Chermside and Aspley Hypermarket, Coles Aspley Hypermarket, Hart Sport Aspley. However the biggest thanks must go to the team at Swim Solutions for their contribution to the co-organisation and running of this event!
THE FUN STUFF PART 2
Mother’s Day Re-Gift Drive
We are continuing our #SustainabilityGoals and inviting families to check through their "re-gift cupboard" for any items suitable to donate to our Mother's Day Stall. It might be something small - like a sleeping mask, a candle, a pair of gloves, or a frame. But it should be new and in sale-able condition. If you have something suitable that you wish to "let it go", then please consider donating it to our stall.
In addition, we are looking for people who might be keen crafters, planters, sewers, bakers who'd like to donate any home-made goodies to our stall in May. It's just under 90 days away, so hopefully plenty of time to get your creativity on. Please email us if you'd like to contribute.
To donate a re-giftable gift, donation days are Monday 18th Feb, Fri 22nd Feb, and Mon 25th Feb - 8-9am - Please bring items to the Uniform Shop.
