Albany Creek Uniting Church May Fair

Tomorrow, 56 students from the Junior Choir led by Mrs McIntyre will perform at the Albany Creek Uniting Church Fair. Students are to arrive at 12.30 pm for their performance at 1.15 pm - 1.45 pm. This event is always a highlight on our school calendar and we invite parents/ carers to join us for this event.

Sports Day

Congratulations to the year 3-6 students for their active participation and great sportsmanship at the Track and Field Carnival this week. Congratulations to Oxley house who with 1503 points. High commendation goes to Kennedy House with 1395 points and Mitchell House with 1237 points. I am proud of the Aspley sports captains who were superb role models for the children throughout the event.

I wish to thank Mr Schmidt, PE Teacher, and Staff for their organisation and leadership of the event and for the new format which has received a lot of positive feedback.

I also wish to thank the P & C and their volunteers for keeping the community well fed and refreshed. This year, students from Aspley State High School and Craigslea State High School have been instrumental as sports officials on Friday. We give special thanks to the two teachers from Craigslea State High, who led our ballgames. Special thanks also to Mr Jim O’Sullivan who acted as our guest official on the days.

School Facilities Update

In recent weeks, the school has achieved the painting of: the exterior of Prep C/ Prep J; two sets of stairs; and the chemicals shed. In coming weeks, we will paint two mores sets of stairs, the wall around the paved courtyard between A and D Block; a wall at the entry to the pool and the long wall along Maundrell Terrace, at the front of the school. If you wish to take a photo of the existing mural please do so in the next week before it is repainted. We have completed some repairs to the existing fences and trimming of the lower branches of some large trees.

Current works underway include: establishing a new front gate and ramp on Maundrell Tce; removal of the pedestrian gate on the Northern end of Maundrell Tce; and concreting to the path of the new playground is to occur this Saturday. This work has been delayed by recent rain. I thank parents for their patience as these works occur.

Each year the school has an allocated maintenance budget which supports the ongoing repairs and planned and unplanned maintenance. The school acts to tender works to receive competitive prices for all work completed at the school. The school plans to ensure that the funds available are best spent in priority areas.

If you have a concern with an area, or note a safety concern, please contact the school Principal or Deputy Principal. The P & C Association is not a forum for parent complaints or maintenance concerns.

Parents and Citizens Association Day

On the 24 May 2019 we recognise the members of our P&C Association and say thank you to their dedicated volunteers and P&C members, who help improve the school and its community.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2019

The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for state and non-state schools.

The challenge is not a competition and aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. Children and students can participate in the challenge within their school, early childhood centre or as individual readers (home-educated students or students whose schools are not participating in the program).

The Premier’s Reading Challenge begins on Monday 13 May and closes on Friday 23 August 2019. All classes at Aspley State School will participate in the challenge. The goal for students in preparatory to year four is to read twenty books, and, for Year Five and Six students to read fifteen books.

Each teacher will clarify the record keeping procedure with their class next week. Students are to keep track of the number of books they have read within the time of the challenge on either: the official Premier’s Reading Challenge recording sheet; or their regular home reading record book; or their iPad reading log.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

IB Learner Profile – Knowledgeable

Knowledgeable is the next IB learner attribute that the school community will profile.

When students are being knowledgeable, they explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In doing so, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Knowledge is powerful and comes from a variety of sources such as; asking questions, reading books, observing the world around us and listening to others. Being knowledgeable is ongoing and relies on curiosity. Children learn best when they can model quality learning behaviours from the adults around them. As a community of lifelong learners, it is important for all of us to demonstrate behaviours that help us gain knowledge. This can be demonstrated in structured and unstructured environments and does not need to look like formal learning.

Under 8’s - Friday 24 May

This year, we are celebrating Under 8’s Day on Friday 24 May. We have lots of hands-on and physical activities on offer for the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students to participate in.

The activities provided by the classroom teachers will begin at 9.00 am at the school hall, on the oval, at the Eastern and Western sides of the hall and in the Prep Playground. The students will each receive a bag with a card attached.

Students are encouraged to move around and complete as many activities as they can in the given timeframe and get a stamp, on the attached card, for each completed activity. At the end of the session, the students can drop their completed card into a box provided for their year level. A lucky winner (with the most number of stamps) will be drawn out and the winners will be announced at the next assembly.

Parents and grandparents are welcome to walk around to the activities with their child/children for this session but please ensure that you sign in at the hall first.

After First Break, from 11:30 am -1:30 pm, the students will be engaged in a range of rotational activities organised by Kinetic Kids. Each year level will be allocated a time slot to be involved in these fun, physical, team building, cardio fitness developing and emotional awareness activities.

Students are encouraged to wear their House coloured shirts, their school hats, sunscreen and school shoes for this day. Both breaks will be at normal times and students will return to the classroom to finish the day after Second Break.

Open Day

On Friday 3 May, we opened our school to visitors interested in enrolling children in Prep for 2020. Our student leaders were our ambassadors who were asked to take the families around and talk about all the wonderful things they experience as students at Aspley State School. They did such a great job that we did not have many parents see the need to ask us any questions. Well done leaders!

In-Catchment Prep families

If you live in our catchment or know of someone who has a Prep child wanting to enrol at our school for 2020 from the catchment, please be advised that the interview process will be on Friday 31 May. All completed booklets need to be handed in to the school office as soon as possible so that correspondence can be made to nominate an interview time.

Please contact the school office on 3863 9111 for further information.

Prep Vision Screening

A reminder that all Prep Vision Screening forms are due in to the class teacher by Friday 17 May. Families who have opted for a screening will be notified later this term or early next term.

Middle School Problem Solving Challenge Day: Years 5-8

Wavell State High School hosted a maths-based Problem-Solving Challenge Day for small teams of students from Years 5 to 8 in the local Brisbane North schools. Aspley State School sent two Year 6 teams who were excited to be part of the program. Students arrived to a hall decorated with stars and planets. Current Wavell High students were dressed as Space Helpers, ready to assist the organisation of the day. The hall was a buzz of student activity as teams faced their set challenges. Our Aspley teams did us proud as they worked together diligently solving all problems. Regardless of not placing as a winning team, the experience was rewarding with students commenting:

On the whole it was an amazing experience and I enjoyed every minute of it

Charles 6O

This was the first time I had attended. My overall thought of the day was it was great and I learnt a lot. I would definitely do it again.

Kai 6D

It was also great to see some of our previous students, who have moved onto high school, participating in the challenge. Thank you to Ms Hinds for her work in organisation and preparation of the teams. We look forward to participating in future Wavell High challenge programs.

YEAR 5 CAMP

Last week the Year 5 students went on an adventure to PGL Kindilan Camp in Redland Bay. It was a fun-filled three days with a number of activities that challenged them physically, socially and mentally. The children worked well in teams and strived to overcome their fears. We proudly watched as students tackled the giant swing, abseiling, raft building, the leap of faith and the flying fox. Camps are a wonderful opportunity for students to create memories with their friends and teachers. We asked students to briefly share some of these memories with you.

I enjoyed the feeling of the thrill when I was on the flying fox, the giant swing and the leap of faith. Camp was a lot of fun and I wish that I could go there again someday.
Schy A 5V

I think that camp was one of the best experiences ever, because it was very interesting to see what happened on the flying fox.
Tameka W 5V

I really liked aeroball, as we had to do a lot of jumping up and down on the trampoline. Raft building was also a lot of fun, but our raft did not make it, so we all fell into the water.
Mannat J 5V

Year 5 Camp was a daring challenge of trust and believing in yourself. Thrilling experiences such as Giant Swing and Flying fox made you speechless, but a competitive trampolining sport “Aeroball” made you bubble with excitement!
Hamish N 5F

Camp was an adventure that pushed you out of your comfort zone and was full of once in a lifetime opportunities.
On camp I learnt to alter my perspective on situations, and I found a different side of people that I never knew existed.
Grace L 5F

Camp was absolutely AMAZING! We did so many different activities at great height and some other activities that tested our team.
Year 5 camp was filled with lots of excitement. The food was cooked to perfection, also our cabins were super nice and everyone was happy.

We are planning to use the opportunity to purchase more mathematics equipment for students to use in our classrooms. The more stickers we collect, the more equipment we can buy. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Hamilton in the library.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.

One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools, (ICAS)

This year, Aspley State School will once again be offering students in years three to six the opportunity to participate in the International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS). The format for the assessments is changing and all assessments, with the exception of the writing task for years three and four, will be conducted online. The timing of the ICAS has been moved to term three and more information, including sitting dates and cut-off times for nominations and payments, will be included in the next newsletter.

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS

A $5 hire fee per uniform is required and this helps us maintain and replace the uniforms as required. Uniforms must be returned within 7 days following the last event, clean and in good condition. If your student is requiring the uniform for more than one date, please advise/email Jodie so that she is aware. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

All adult members of our community who have an interest in supporting our school are invited to become a member. To apply, an application form must be completed and presented at a meeting. Our P&C Constitution provides further information about the membership process, which can be found on the school website.

Being a member means you can vote on the discussion around how the P&C supports the school, and our children. All members of our community are welcome to provide us with feedback at any time (preferably in writing).

If you have any questions about what it means to be a part of the P&C, then please let me know.

The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note.
