PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Parents & Citizen’s Day
Today we celebrate P & C Day! On this day I would like to recognise the valuable contribution of the many parents, carers and community members who support the Aspley State School Parents and Citizens Association. To our dedicated P & C executive and members, thank you all for your support to make our school community a rich and vibrant place. Your contribution as volunteers, at working bees, fund raising and purchasing playgrounds and learning materials for the students at Aspley State School is greatly appreciated. The P & C Association always welcomes new members. Their next meeting will be held in the school library at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 11 June 2019.
Advancing Partnerships –Parent and Community Engagement Framework
Qld celebrates its diverse community and recognises the integral role parents and families play as partners in their children’s education. Our state schools play a crucial role in supporting this diversity, engaging with the community, and modelling and fostering respectful relationships between learners and all members of the school.
Genuine parent engagement exists when there is a meaningful relationships between parents and teachers with a shared goal of maximising learning and wellbeing outcomes for students.
To enable the development of a Community Engagement Framework for Aspley State School we will seek your feedback through a parents/carer survey. You will receive an email next week to invite you to contribute your ideas of ways to engage with our diverse community. Aspects of the survey will include: Communication; and Partnerships with Parents. I ask that parents/ carers take a few minutes to complete this survey and provide their feedback. Your contribution will support school strategies to enhance our learning community.
Please read more about the Advancing Partnerships – Parent and Community Engagement Framework at:

Senior Leaders Presentation
School leaders play a vital role at Aspley State School. We were all impressed with their support for Under 8’s Day today.
At assembly next Monday, 27 May at 2.15 pm we will be proud to induct six more student senior leaders who have been endorsed in the second round of senior leadership selection. We invite parents to join us for this proud moment, as we acknowledge their commitment to school leadership at Aspley State School.
Facilities Update
Current Metropolitan Regional facility works are improving our school and these include: painting of the brick wall on Maundrell Tce, installation of a ramp at the front gate on Maundrell Tce and replacement of a section of fence; painting of the entrance to the pool area; painting of the wall near the paved courtyard and painting of some steps to classrooms.
We are excited to see the completion of the pathway and installation of synthetic turf to the area adjacent to the new early years playground. Our thanks to the P & C Association who contributed $10 000 to this project.
School Photographs
On Monday 27 of May and Tuesday 28 May 2019 students and staff from Aspley State School will have their photos taken by Master School Portraits. A timetable for the photos was sent home this week. Please bring the order envelopes to give to the photographer on the relevant day. Online orders are open until 9 June 2019.
Gala Day
Students from year 4-6 are invited to compete in the interschool Gala Days in term two. Students have nominated to join a team where they will have the opportunity to learn skills and represent Aspley State School at the Gala Day school sports. There are four gala days this term, where our students play sport with other students from schools in the North District Sports Association.
Wet weather / sports updates are posted for all schools at:
https://metnorthschoolsport.eq.edu.au/Districtsports/north/Pages/north.aspx
Gala Days are held on a Friday being: 31 May, 7 June, 14 June and 21 June 2019. Should wet weather cause a cancellation of a Gala Day, the sports will be held on another day to be advised.
Go Green Day
The Aspley State Student Council will be celebrating Go Green Day on Friday 28 June 2019. On this day students are invited to use their imagination and wear green as they learn about the environment and sustainability. We ask students to dress up in green and bring a gold coin donation to support the ongoing community gardens, establish a sensory garden and plant fruit trees in the garden area.
Lost
A student has lost a pair of prescription glasses with a black frame. The frame has green lettering saying Ray Ban and a blue/ green inner frame. If you see these glasses please bring them to the office as the student requires them for their learning.
Community Coffee Evening
All parents and community members are invited to attend the next Community Coffee on Wednesday, 29 May 2019 at 6.00pm - 7.00 pm at the school hall. On this night we welcome Dr Jane Coleman, Clinical Psychologist. Dr Coleman, a Triple P Trainer, currently works as an Implementation Consultant, supporting the implementation of Triple P in Australia. Her main interests include early intervention approaches for autism, child and adolescent anxiety and parenting interventions.
At the Community Coffee Dr Coleman will talk about the five key principles of parenting: give strategies; reduce stress; keep children calmer and in routines; and some practical skills for parents. A tip sheet for parents to take away will be provided.
We have also invited parents from other local schools to attend this event.
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
BOOST News
Currently, students in Year 1 and 6 are in their BOOST cycle. The Year 1 students are working on individual goals for their reading. Some of the students are working on fluency and some are learning to stop and re-read when something does not make sense, while others are deepening their understanding through Reciprocal Reading.
The Year 6 students are learning inferencing skills. This is the skill of reading between the lines and answering questions using implied information.
This BOOST cycle goes until the end of Term 2. Discuss with your children what they do in BOOST.
Under 8s day
The Prep, Year 1 and 2 students had a wonderful Under 8s day today. They decorated biscuits with M and Ms, sprinkles, and snakes; they built bridges as a STEM activity with tongue depressors and straws; decorated bags; made fans, pasta necklaces, crowns and pencil toppers. They participated in an obstacle course, blew bubbles, designed and created using mobilo and some of them took the challenge with chess. After First Break, the students were engaged in some challenging activities with KinecticKids. Overall, they had a wonderful time!
Special thanks to the wonderful staff who planned these activities for the students, and more importantly the student leaders who did a fantastic job assisting during the activities. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as the children.

Assembly class Showcases
1H
For Assembly on Monday 13 May the students from 1H made a movie of their excursion to the Caboolture Historical village. The purpose of this visit was to demonstrate how routines, objects, habits and environments have changed over time.
4H
Students from 4H presented information related to the first IB-PYP unit of ‘Where we are in place and time’. The students described what life was like in England during the 1700s, the conditions on board the convict ships and early life in Australia.
Congratulations
Well done to the students who received certificates on assembly this week, you have made Aspley proud!
IB Learner Profile
This week we embark on understanding the IB Learner Profile of Knowledgeable. Knowledgeable refers to how we develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. It also refers to how we engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.
Knowledgeable follows on well from Inquirers as the students learn how to use the information they have gathered from their inquiries.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
– Dr. Seuss
“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.”
- Frank Herbert
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Please find attached a copy of the timetable for School Photographs, scheduled for Monday 27 May and Tuesday 28 May 2019.
Please note that students bring their envelope, with the correct money and order, to deliver to the photographer on the day. Alternatively, online orders will be accepted up until close of business on 9 June 2019.
If you wish a sibling photograph to be taken, please collect a special order form from the school office. Sibling photos are to be taken on Monday 27 May at 8.30 am and Tuesday 28 May at 8.00am, at the school hall. Please ensure all your school aged children are in attendance at this time, should you wish to take up this option.
We ask that parents support children to be well presented on the day of their photograph and are dressed in their formal uniform, including white socks and black shoes. Parents please ensure your child has a uniform in good order and the buttons on their shirt are in place. You may choose to provide a brush / comb for students to tidy their hair on the respective photo day.
CURRICULUM NEWS
Prep Garden
The prep children were so excited when our Friday gardening group was able to finally dig up our home grown ‘Sweet Potatoes”. We also noticed that we have 3 more eggplants growing from their flowers! After harvesting some veggies, it was time to plant our next batch of vegetables, kale and capsicums. We are excited to watch them grow, grow, grow!

Prep Science
In science this semester, the Prep Students have been using their senses to explore and observe the weather. Students have been busy observing and recording the weather changes, using appropriate symbols and identifying the features that reflect a change in the weather. Students have been given opportunities to reflect on the impact of these changes and make a connection themselves, in particular on clothing choices, shelter and activities, depending on the type of weather.

Year 1D
Last Thursday, 1D attended one of their fish weaving lessons with Artist Wendy and her fellow team of artists. 1D's timber framed fish have been weaved using a variety of environmentally friendly resources such as string, wool, coloured paper, material and recycled plastic bags. The use of recycling and reusing materials has made the Year 1 students more aware of the need to care for the environment around them. Artist Wendy taught students how to use a variety of textures, colours and their fine motor skills to create an amazing piece of artwork. We can't wait to share them with you at our Art Affair!

EARLY ACT
Early Act is a school service club for primary students from ages 5 to 13. At Aspley State School, Early Act is supported by the Aspley Rotary Club. The mission and operation of EarlyAct are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Interact.
Early Act provides students with the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognizing the dignity and worth of each individual thereby building respect for others.
Early Act also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local and global communities.
Members of Early Act meet each fortnight, at the first lunch break, on a Tuesday. In order to accommodate the availability of the kind volunteers who champion Early Act, as well as the activities in the existing school timetable, the meeting time has been changed. The next Early Act meeting is to be held next Tuesday, 28th May and fortnightly thereafter.
We are grateful to Chappy Sinead, Mrs Mann-Darlington and Claire Chalk who work with Margaret from the Aspley Rotary Club. This year, Early Act students will support the charities, Rosies Friends on the Street and Our Rainbow House.
Rosies Friends on the Street:
Rosies connects with people in need, who are abandoned, socially isolated and lonely. It is a non-profit organisation that relies completely on donations to run its outreaches. Rosies is not funded by the government.
For more information on ROSIES, visit the link below.

YOU can affect the change that changes someone’s life!

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

P&C NEWS
Happy P&C Day! I would like to thank our many hardworking P&C members (and non-members!) for the tireless work they do each year to improve the educational facilities, resources and student outcomes in Queensland state schools. P&C Day is held today, during National Volunteer Week.
Why do I volunteer? Because I can. I did not join the P&C knowing what I do now; I went to a P&C meeting so I could understand and learn more about my child’s school; I volunteered to be secretary because I could type. But the biggest WHY for me is because it’s about giving back and paying it forward.
When I asked some of the many volunteers in our school community, WHY they volunteered, here were their answers: {I volunteer because} -
- I like to give back and learn/do something new.
- I believe that great communities are built on a foundation of generosity.
- I enjoy supporting my children’s school and being part of the community. [It’s a] great way to meet people and sets a good example to my children.
- I like to help and be part of my community.
- No man is an island (John Donne)
- I hope modelling positive behaviours will empower [my girls] to be community focused and to help those less fortunate.
- My reward is the sense of accomplishment in the smiles and relief emanating from those around me.
- [of] the pride-tinted glasses your kids look through at you…plus…the occasional free sausage!
- I feel bad that you do everything!
The last one’s actually not true – I don’t do everything. In fact, it’s because of all the other people volunteering in our community, that I volunteer on the P&C to support them.
So if any of these thoughts resonate with you, please join us. There’s room for everyone!
If you ever want to know how, when and where, you can volunteer, check our sign-up page at the link below - or email me at AspleyPC@gmail.com if you have another way you’d like to contribute. There’s lots of behind the scene jobs that might take just 10 minutes – and many hands make light work!

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS
- Normal operating hours (Mon 8-9.45am and Thurs 3-3.45pm) will resume in Week 2, Term 2. The uniform shop is looking for a regular volunteer who can assist one hour per week – if you can help, please drop in to see Jodie, or email Uniforms.AspleySS@gmail.com
- Music Uniforms: Pre-ordered music uniforms are now available for collection (a note was sent home last term). They can be paid for in the uniform shop or on Flexischools. Anyone else requiring music uniforms there is some extra stock.
- Gala Sports/Sports Representative Uniforms: These uniforms are provided by the school and hired through the Uniform Shop. A $5 hire fee per uniform is required and this helps us maintain and replace the uniforms as required. Uniforms must be returned within 7 days following the last event, clean and in good condition. If your student is requiring the uniform for more than one date, please advise/email Jodie so that she is aware. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
- Reminder: If you cannot get to the uniform shop during the opening hours, Jodie is happy to arrange for your order to be delivered to your student via the classroom teacher. Order via Flexischools for convenience. Email: Uniforms.AspleySS@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Past Event Updates:
- Mother’s Day Stall: Big thank you to Jodie P, Tee P, Lee M and Sara F for their time and efforts with coordinating the Mother’s Day Stall this year. To our donors and volunteers who contributed – we appreciate you too! Lee M and Sara F (year 1 mums) are hoping to continue the event in 2020, so if you’d like to be a part of the organizing committee, please get in touch before the end of term. You will have the chance to learn the ropes as we organize the Father’s Day Stall, and be involved in an annual event that students and families really enjoy and appreciate.
- Election Day BBQ & Bake Stall: Big thank you to the team of volunteers who helped prepare and set up for the Election Day #Democracy BBQ & Bake Stall; and to all the wonderful bakers who contributed as well. We were up at the school from 7am and packed up by 3pm. There are too many of you to list (and because I will inevitably forget someone!) but thank you so much! See you again next year (I hear there might even be two elections on the cards – State AND Local Council). Big thanks also to Yamile and her family from Espresso Colombia for their delish coffees and hot chocolates.
The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note. Please contact us at pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au to reach all members of the executive; or aspleypc@gmail.com to reach Alice (President) directly. Alice can also be contacted on 0403 190 609.
