PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

This week our school leaders attended the Qld Association of State School Principal’s (QASSP) Conference along with approximately 300 other educators. This conference was an opportunity to understand the latest research and educational theories which inform school leadership and student learning. I reflected that education is our most important investment, not an expenditure! The young people in our schools are the most valuable asset for the future of Australia and our rapidly changing global world.

A special thank you to Angus and Dylan, student captains, and Artist Wendy, who supported school principals at the QASSP conference to identify a goal for school leadership and student learning.

Assessment for Learning

At school, all students participate in a variety of assessments which support individual learning progress, the learning community and refine the learning programs. Common types of assessments at school include:

  • diagnostic assessments (formal measurement to establish a start point and informs planning and teaching);
  • formative assessments (carried out through the course of learning);
  • benchmark assessments (evaluates student performance at periodic intervals);
  • informal assessments (systematic observations, interacting with students and providing feedback);
  • summative assessments (assists to make judgements of student achievement and can be a formal assessment, or may be used to judge programme effectiveness).

The assessments students complete at school provide a range of information about the learner, learning styles, standards of achievement, the learning community and the learning programs.

Student achievements are evidenced through assessments and work samples and student achievement is reflected in the summative report card provided to each student / parent each semester. Summative report cards are distributed to parents/ carers at the end of two semesters (June and December) each year.

Writing– an explicit improvement agenda

This week our teachers will meet in their year teams to analyse samples of student writing so they can moderate their assessments of writing and achieve consistency of teacher judgements and an in-depth understanding of the success criteria for that genre of writing. Teachers use predetermined Guides to Making Judgements to analyse student performance and provide feedback to learners about their achievement in writing. The assessment of writing contributes toward the overall English achievement, denoted each semester, in the summative report card.

The Aspley Foundation

It’s June already which means it’s time for the 2019 Aspley State School Foundation Appeal, where you can make tax deductible donations for an important project which will benefit your child.

This year The Aspley Foundation’s project has two parts:

  • the installation of a shade sail over the oval grandstand
  • the erection of multi-faceted shade sails over the new junior playground.

The oval grandstand sail will be rectangular, secured to the hall and supported by posts rising from the grandstand steps. The junior playground sails will cover the whole playground, and be configured to deflect the sun’s rays for an optimal period during the day.

The total cost will be more than $20,000, and the P&C Association has confirmed that it regards this as a priority project and will contribute as much as it can to ensure the project’s timely completion. The school has also agreed to support the implementation of the project.

Can you please help with a tax deductible donation to the Foundation? Click on the link below to donate. Your gift to The Aspley Foundation will go to fund building and maintenance requirements of the school. In this way, equivalent monies can be released from the school’s discretional budget, enabling the shade sails to be constructed.

https://aspleyssfoundation.com.au/

Every dollar of your gift will go to making these shade sails a reality and benefit our students now and in the future. Your support is vital if we are to be successful in enhancing the quality of the facilities that our students use each day.

Please give generously and make a gift via the link below.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2019

Our school is delighted to be taking part in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. Over the next few months we’ll be supporting our Early Years to Year 6 students to take part and enjoy reading a wide variety of books. Parents are also encouraged to get involved by encouraging reading at home through having lots of positive shared reading experiences with your children. Find out more at Premier's Reading Challenge.

Q fever Prevention

Q fever is a bacterial infection acquired from animals. It’s present in a range of settings including stock yards of agriculture programs. Families can also be exposed to Q fever at their farms or through activities outside of school. The Q fever fact sheet supports schools and families to manage their Q fever risk and prevent Q fever infection.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Parent and Community Engagement

“The department's Parent and Community Engagement framework helps students, schools, parents and the community to work together to maximise student learning and wellbeing. Research shows parent and community engagement that is effectively focused on student learning can deliver powerful outcomes (OECD, 2011).

Most successful schools engage students, parents, carers and the community as partners in supporting student learning and wellbeing. Many schools have already developed strategies to engage with parents and community. The overwhelming evidence that parent engagement has a positive effect on student achievement has led to all state schools and their communities being encouraged to strengthen their engagement—with and between students, teachers, parents and carers, support staff, community, industry and business groups.”

https://education.qld.gov.au/parents-and-carers/community-engagement

At Aspley State School, there has been a long history of partnerships with parents and the community. The results of which are a culturally rich and supportive environment for students, families and staff. The Department’s Parent and Community Engagement framework provides schools with a structure to renew, strengthen and innovate approaches to engagement with parents and the broader community. The framework prompts schools to reflect on current practice, suggests strategies for engagement and supports the school to align all approaches with the National School Improvement Tool.

We would like to call for Expressions of Interest from community members, families and staff to form a focus group to begin the work of enhancing the partnerships the school currently enjoys. Any interested persons are encouraged to contact Mrs Donna Boaler (dboal2@eq.edu.au) by the end of Term Two.

Class Showcase – 1N

At assembly on Monday 27 May, the students from 1N sang the song ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’. The song is about celebrating every aspect of every day and was joyous to watch.

Second Round Senior Leader Induction

Congratulations to our newly inducted senior leaders!

Complaints Management:

The following statement appears in the Parent Handbook.

When issues arise we encourage adults to meet directly with staff who will best facilitate a resolution. In most cases this will be the class Teacher, Teacher aide or Principal.

It is not acceptable for any parent to address a concern or problem directly with a student. When the concern needing attention relates to students (e.g. playground disagreements between students) parents MUST report their concerns to their class Teacher or Principal.

The Parent Handbook forms part of the school information package and is discussed during the enrolment interview. On some occasions, it is necessary to remind the community of the responsibilities of all adults in the school. Please ensure that this is followed to avoid unnecessary difficulties between community members.

NAIDOC Incursion

This week, all students took home a note regarding the incursion offered by Lucas Proudfoot on 22 July. Lucas is a member of the Tweed Coast Bundjalung/South Sea Islander Community with a background in professional surfing, music and traditional Aboriginal dance.

Lucas has performed in over 25 countries worldwide. He has been able to merge his many talents into a one-man performance that is highly interactive and informative about Australian Indigenous cultures in his new program ‘Circular Rhythm’.

‘Circular Rhythm’ is a solo performance-featuring guitar, stomp box and didgeridoo plus other indigenous instruments including clap sticks and boomerangs. The format is interactive with audience participation, which is a key component. The songs performed in the show are all his own original compositions.

‘Circular Rhythm’ presents Indigenous Australian culture in a dynamic, fun and informative show. Students learn about the different aspects of Australian Indigenous culture through a contemporary and interactive musical performance. This performance complements and enhances the Indigenous perspectives in the Australian Curriculum.

The cost of this incursion is $5.00 per student and is due with permission form on or before Monday 17 June 2019.

P-2 Sports Day

On Thursday 27 June, The Prep Year 1 and Year 2 students will have their Sports Carnival. More information about this event will follow in the next newsletter.

Aspley State School Dress Code

At Aspley State School, we teach our students to wear their uniform proudly. Students represent our school and themselves every day at school and at other venues during excursions etc.

In the School Dress Code Policy, it clearly states that these are the only additional items allowed to be worn.

A watch.

We are aware of fitbits being worn at school. These are not considered watches. There have been two cases of lost fitbits this term. Please be advised that the school accepts no responsibility for any lost items.

Jewellery

Plain small studs or sleepers and not dangly, long earrings are acceptable.

Students have been noticed wearing thick chains and beaded chains around their neck. These can cause unfortunate accidents during playtime and sport practises.

We ask for your consideration and cooperation with this request. The classroom teacher or a member of the admin team might ask your child if they are noticed wearing jewellery, accessories or a part of clothing, which is not part of the Aspley State School uniform. Students are able to wear a wristband if approved through a health plan.

Using iPads at school

It has come to our attention that some students are using their iPads to send messages to their parents during school time.

We do not encourage this practice. Students must see their classroom teacher if they feel unwell so the process can be followed by the school to contact the parent.

CURRICULUM NEWS

BRAINways

Semester 1: Most of the BRAINways certificates and levels of achievement have arrived in the school this week and will be distributed via the class teacher. If your child does not receive his/her certificate by the end of next week, please contact the school.

Semester 2: Please be advised that BRAINways is scheduled for Term 3 Week 10, from 17 - 20 September.

This is an opportunity for high achieving students from neighbouring Northern Suburb schools to be nominated by their class teachers to participate in a program of challenge.

BRAINways, is an external provider to Aspley State School, and have previously hired the school hall for the event. There is a cost of approximately $120 to attend a two day program, should you be wanting to budget for this in the event your child is nominated and accepted.

This event is classified as an extracurricular activity. As such it is optional and at the discretion of the parent as to whether this opportunity is actioned.

Life Education

WHAT IS LIFE EDUCATION?

Life Education motivates and empowers young people to make smart life choices for a healthy future. The Life Education Team and Harold the Giraffe will be visiting Aspley State School, from Wednesday 5 June - Friday 21 June 2019. Individual class times/dates will vary.

Please see attached for further information.

Prep

This term, the Prep students participated in their very first IB unit. Under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Where we are in place and time’ the students focus their attention around the central idea of ‘The interpretation of artefacts contributes to our understanding of personal histories’. Using attributes of a good Communicator and Inquirer.

The teachers came up with the idea, to create positive opportunities for the students to orally share their own special artefacts, in a variety of different formats. Each student brought to school a shoebox with 3 or more artefacts. One from a baby, one from a toddler and one significant to now. The students really enjoyed this unit of work and lover sharing and talking about their special items (artefacts).

EARLY ACT

Early Act is a school service club for primary students from ages 5 to 13. At Aspley State School, Early Act is supported by the Aspley Rotary Club. The mission and operation of EarlyAct are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Interact.

Early Act provides students with the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognising the dignity and worth of each individual thereby building respect for others.

Early Act also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local and global communities.

Members of Early Act meet each fortnight, at the first lunch break, on a Tuesday. In order to accommodate the availability of the kind volunteers who champion Early Act, as well as the activities in the existing school timetable, the meeting time has been changed. The next Early Act meeting is to be held next Tuesday, 28 May and fortnightly thereafter.

We are grateful to Chappy Sinead, Mrs Mann-Darlington and Claire Chalk who work with Margaret from the Aspley Rotary Club. This year, Early Act students will support the charities, Rosies Friends on the Street and Our Rainbow House.

Rosies Friends on the Street:

Rosies connects with people in need, who are abandoned, socially isolated and lonely. It is a non-profit organisation that relies completely on donations to run its outreaches. Rosies is not funded by the government.

http://rosies.org.au/

YOU can affect the change that changes someone’s life!

The Aspley community has the privileged opportunity to be a part of making our world a better place. By contributing, your small act of kindness, will make a difference to someone in need.

Donations of one or more of any of the following items WILL make a positive impact in the lives of others.

STUDENT ABSENCES

NEW ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794

With the introduction of ID Attend to help us streamline absence notifications for students, we now have a new mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

LIBRARY

Woolworths Earn and Learn

The Woolworths Earn and Learn program is still running. Thank you to the many families who have brought in their stickers. Please keep them coming as we are planning to use the opportunity to purchase more mathematics equipment for students to use in our classrooms. The more stickers we collect, the more equipment we can buy.

Boxes for you to bring either your stickers or your completed sheets are available in both the school office and library. We also have collection boxes at our two closest Woolworths stores; Aspley Hypermarket and Chermside Marketplace centres. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Hamilton in the library.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.

One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

Student and Class Borrowing

Students who have their waterproof library bag, and are not on Restricted Borrowing due to overdue library books, are welcome to borrow from the library before school from 8am, during play at second break and after school until 3:15pm. TUCKSHOP NEWS

  • Tuckshop Opening Hours – 8.30am to 1.45pm Tuesday to Friday.
  • NEW IN TERM 3: Currently Year 2 to 6 students collect their orders from the Tuckshop, and return with their paper bag to collect any ice block orders. Prep and Year 1 students have their orders delivered to their respective class areas, including any snacks. As of Term 3 Week 1, Year 1 students will be asked to collect their orders from the Tuckshop. The students will take their orders back to their eating areas; and then return to the Tuckshop counter to collect any ice blocks ordered. Tuckshop volunteers, teachers and parents are asked to remind students not to throw away their bags if they have items to collect. We encourage parents to continue to pre-order all Tuckshop items, as opposed to giving students money to purchase at the counter. This ensures the children have time to play, as opposed to spending their lunch break queuing; as well as reduces risks with losing money.
  • BIRTHDAY CAKE ORDERS: The tuckshop received an interesting order recently- TWO orders on the same day - for 30 pieces of yum cake to be delivered to each class. While yum cake is on the menu as a treat, the cake takes about 2 to 3 hours to prepare from start to finish, and normally only 1/2 to 1 slab are on hand each day to fill the general orders as well as over the counter. Without adequate notice, neither Jane nor Nat will fill an order like this. In addition, birthday cakes are presented on a platter, with a birthday banner, and the pieces are slightly larger than the standard slice. Please be considerate of the order lead in time - one week's notice is best. In future, if an order like this is received, it will not be filled but refunded. Without enough volunteers, Nat and Jane's capacity are to complete that day's orders; and not special requests like this without notice. Thank you for your consideration and understanding.
  • GALA Sports – A reminder that Years 4 to 6 students go to Gala sports on some Fridays in Term 2 and may not be present to collect their second break meals. Please order extra fruit or snacks for first break to take with them.
  • Prep to 2 Sports Carnival – Thursday June 27 – the Tuckshop will be offering meal deal offers. Please keep an eye out on Flexischools and order by Wednesday June 26. Honey Badger Coffee will be on hand again to keep our spectators warm. If you bring your own keep cup, they’ll give you a 50c discount. Every cup of coffee purchased from them is a donation to the P&C, so please support them!
  • VOLUNTEERS are needed to ensure our Tuckshop costs are kept low. If you can assist with any task, we’d appreciate you. We most need people Thursday and Fridays 8 til 9.30am and 12.30pm to 2pm; but any time you can give is appreciated.
  • We are still missing several reusable pots. If they have ended up at home, please send them back (clean is preferred!).

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS

  • Normal operating hours (Mon 8-9.45am and Thurs 3-3.45pm) will resume in Week 2, Term 2. The uniform shop is looking for a regular volunteer who can assist one hour per week – if you can help, please drop in to see Jodie, or email Uniforms.AspleySS@gmail.com
  • Gala Sports Uniform Supply: The Uniform Shop has been inundated the last two weeks with Gala Day Uniform supply. We are aware the process could be improved, and we are working on this. We appreciate your understanding and patience. A reminder that uniforms must be returned within 7 days of the last event, clean and in good condition. If there are any faults, please advise Jodie.
  • Winter Jumpers: This week saw single digits on the weather front – please ensure your child’s jumper is labelled with their name and class so that they can be returned to them. Girls can wear black stockings/tights under their skorts; or both boys and girls can wear tracksuit pants. The Uniform Shop stocks a windbreaker type jacket; if you are seeking fleece jumpers, second-hand stock may be available, alternatively, Best & Less or similar retailers may have stock.
  • Reminder: If you cannot get to the uniform shop during the opening hours, Jodie is happy to arrange for your order to be delivered to your student via the classroom teacher. Order via Flexischools for convenience. Email: Uniforms.AspleySS@gmail.com if you have any questions.

ASPLEY FOUNDATION

The Aspley State School Foundation was established in 2018 by a group of committed members of the P&C. It’s a tax deductible opportunity for families and businesses to donate to enhance the learning environment of our school. The school and P&C are working together to launch the annual appeal – we hope that our community will support this appeal. A note will be coming home soon with further information. Please keep an eye out.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PARENT REPRESENTATIVE

The position for a parent representative will be voted at the next P&C meeting – 11 June at 7pm. Parents who are interested in contributing to the strategic direction of the school are invited to nominate. Please contact Donna Boaler, Returning Officer, for further information.

TRIVIA NIGHT WRAP UP

Oh what a night! SO many people to thank – these events don’t happen on their own. Firstly to our MC Andrew M for his advice leading up to the event and his work on the night – a true star! To the committee who contributed to the planning and execution – including prize donations and sponsorship - Roslyn V, Jillien Q, Amy F, Jules G, and Jami K; and to the helpers who set up and assisted on the night – the committee plus parents Simon P, Nat C, Barb R, Sonja S, Clare H, Malcolm G, Angela S; our HOC - Leanne Y; and guests from outside our school Lucy W and Richard.

A massive thank you to all our sponsors – so many listed below. Thank you to everyone who came and participated wholeheartedly, and to those who couldn’t make it but purchased raffle tickets. Congratulations to those who won the Silent Auction bids. The figure is still to be finalized but we know we’ve raised a great amount to kick start our fundraising for shade cover for the oval and playground – so THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Aspley State School P&C Association!

The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note. Please contact us at pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au to reach all members of the executive; or aspleypc@gmail.com to reach Alice (President) directly.
