PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome back to school for term three. This term will be another action packed time for all, where students enjoy learning and achieving the goals of the Australian Curriculum through the transdisciplinary theme How we Express Ourselves. All classes are currently exploring this theme, through a central idea specific to each year level.
Each unit begins with a provocation and then children with their teachers explore what this central idea means, as they inquire and learn through their investigation. Some aspects of learning including strong core literacy and numeracy skills are taught across the year and may not always link to the central idea.

On Monday, 22 July 2019 at 8.45 am – 10.15 am we will host a special assembly to welcome our Kinmen students along with special Kinmen County Officials and educators and Qld Government officials. Parents are welcome to attend this special assembly.
Aspley State School students are engaged through the International Baccalaureate –Primary Years Programme and act to be globally minded through connecting with students and cultures from around the world. This connection supports students to develop an understanding of other cultures, increase their knowledge and understanding of our world, and, gain a deeper understanding of our own culture.
Creative Generation –State Schools Onstage 2019
Today, 45 students from Aspley State School attended Creative Generations –State School Onstage. 1500 Queensland state school students took to the stage at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to perform and delight their audience. This year we support state school students as they showcase their creative talents and celebrate CGEN’s 15th anniversary as Queensland’s largest annual student performing arts program.

NAPLAN On-line
In 2020 students from all Australian schools will participate in NAPLAN online. In 2010 students will complete the numeracy, reading, language conventions and writing test (year 5 only) through an on-line environment. Year 3 students will hand-write their writing test.
On the 2-3 September the students in year 2 and 4 students will participate in a trial a readiness test to enable us to ensure the school and students are ready for this on-line test environment. This readiness test will enable students to experience the on-line test environment and be more familiar with the an online test experience.
Students in year 3 will use the computer labs and students in year 4 will use their own or school iPad's to complete their test.
In preparation for NAPLAN we request all parents from year 2 -6 download the free NAPLAN Online app:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nap-locked-down-browser/id1086807255
The locked down browser is a secure browser designed to:
- prevent students from accessing other applications, web pages, software or hardware features and only provides access to the test player.
- prevent use of operating system commands such as functions accessed by Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
- disable features such as the camera, spell check, screenshot, home, back and power buttons.
- prevent execution in a virtual machine or a virtual desktop (e.g. Citrix Virtual desktops, VMware or Parallels on Mac), and,
- prevent the user from exiting without confirmation.
Locked down browser Apps will not contain test content, therefore, a connection to the Internet will still be required in order to take the test. This connection will occur through the school network.
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
School Start Times
We would like to remind parents and caregivers that lessons begin at 8.45am in the morning at Aspley State School. Please make every effort to ensure that students are here on time as consistent late arrivals impact on students accessing instructions for the day and valuable learning.
Feedback from the Life Education Visit (Term 2)
The Life Education van recently visited Aspley State School. Harold and Michele thoroughly enjoyed their time at our school and reported that they were made to feel very welcome. “Harold and I found the students of Aspley State School enthusiastic, attentive, well-mannered and respectful. They are a credit to their parents and carers and the staff of the school. The students in Prep CH and 2/1T were particularly impressive and received a letter from Harold. Congratulations!”
Parents; In addition to the lessons in the van, all students and classroom teachers received workbooks and resources to extend the lessons delivered in the Life Education classroom. Parents and carers can find out what their children learned in the mobile classroom by going to the parent section of the Life Education website on the link below. Click on the relevant links to also check out the 'conversation starter' ideas so you can carry on discussing the lessons at home. There are also some fun and engaging online and offline activities you can do with your children as well as articles, tips and strategies on health and safety issues (such as information on how to disable geo-tagging) and free apps to download

Aspley State School Dress Code
At Aspley State School, we teach our students to wear their uniform proudly. Students represent our school and themselves every day at school and at other venues during excursions etc.
In the School Dress Code Policy, it clearly states that these are the only items allowed to be worn.
A watch.
We are aware of fitbits being worn at school. These are not considered watches. There have been cases of lost fitbits at school. Please be advised that the school accepts no responsibility for any lost items.
i-Watch
I-watches are not recommended to be worn at the school as we do not wish students to access potentially unsafe platforms that are not safeguarded through our school management system and internet filters.
Jewellery
Plain small studs or sleepers are permitted. Dangly long earrings are not acceptable to be worn at school.
Thick chains and beaded chains may be unsafe and could cause unfortunate accidents during playtime and sport practises, and are not to be worn at school.
We ask for your consideration and cooperation with this request. The classroom teacher or a member of the administration team might ask your child to remove an item if they are noticed wearing jewellery, accessories or change a part of clothing, which is not part of the Aspley State School uniform.
Using iPads at school
iPad's are not to be used to send or receive messages to parents during school time.
Students are to report to their classroom teacher if they feel unwell so the process can be followed by the school to contact the parent for an early pick up if necessary.
ARC (Aspley Reading Club)
We have commenced another term of ARC for 2019. All students enrolled in ARC can access levelled books online. Please encourage your child to practice their reading at least 3-4 times a week. Regular practice improves confidence and builds expertise in reading.
ARC assists students who need that extra support with their reading. Mentors work with students to use strategies to decode a word. They teach students to look at the cues available to them to predict a text. The mentors listen to students read and ask them questions about the text to help them comprehend what they have read.
Please see the schedule below for ARC sessions in the library from 8.10am on Mondays and Tuesdays.
P-2 Sports day
The photo gallery is evidence that the children had a fabulous time at the P-2 Sports Carnival. What a great start to the term! The marching was fabulous to watch. The students ran as fast as they could to the finish lines and they cheered their parents on in the parent races.
All the activities were managed by our wonderful student leaders who showed the younger peers how to run in a sack and jump over obstacles. They learnt how to throw a javelin and make a standing long jump. The children loved to roll the pumpkins down the slope and ‘dress’ up their peers.
The weather was beautiful and we all had a wonderful day! At the end of the day, everybody was a winner. Thank you to the dedicated student leaders and teachers who assisted on the day.

Year Five Senior Leadership process for 2019.
The upcoming KOKODA one day leadership camp at Mt. Coot-Tha signifies the start of the Year Five Senior Leadership process. This process is a combination of activities designed to teach students age-appropriate leadership responsibilities and includes explicit training in line with the Aspley Exit Statements.
The school has adopted an enhanced Distributed Leadership Model, giving students greater access to explicit training, additional responsibilities for each Year Level and additional opportunities to lead and participate in new activities to strengthen student responsibility, resilience and leadership.
The aims of the process are to develop young leaders who are:
- Self-managed individuals
- Resourceful and creative thinkers
- Effective communicators
- Quality producers, and
- Active and responsible group members
Students will be:
- Provided with the opportunity to participate in a sequential and scaffolded leadership program
- Offered a broad range of educational, personal and social learning experiences
- Developing specific Year Level cohort responsibilities, projects and partnerships
- Strengthening the concepts of equity, social justice, community service and teamwork
- Promoting self-esteem, resourcefulness, independence, judgement, cooperation, tolerance and reward for effort through participation in leadership activities, roles and responsibility.
- Participating in an Expression of Interest process to be eligible for Senior Leaders and Captain positions for Year Six, 2020.
The 2019 Senior Leader process and timelines will available closer to the date of the excursion.
Parent and Community Engagement
The Department of Education, Qld’s Parent and Community Engagement Framework helps students, schools, parents and the community to work together to maximise student learning and well-being. Research shows parent and community engagement that is effectively focused on student learning can deliver powerful outcomes (OECD, 2011).
Most successful schools engage students, parents, carers and the community as partners in supporting student learning and well-being. Many schools have already developed strategies to engage with parents and community. The overwhelming evidence that parent engagement has a positive effect on student achievement has led to all state schools and their communities being encouraged to strengthen their engagement—with and between students, teachers, parents and carers, support staff, community, industry and business groups.”
https://education.qld.gov.au/parents-and-carers/community-engagement
Thank you to community members who indicated their interest in being involved. We would like to call for another round of Expressions of Interest to begin the work of enhancing the partnerships the school currently enjoys. Any interested persons are encouraged to contact Mrs Donna Boaler (dboal2@eq.edu.au) by Friday 26 July. An initial meeting of interested parties will be timetabled for the beginning of August.
Year Six Canberra Trip
Year 6 students and their teachers are excited as we prepare for the forthcoming trip to Canberra. As part of the finalisation process with the camp organisers, dietary requirements need to be recorded. Please ensure that all details of your child’s dietary needs are given to Ms Gwen Hinds.
Assembly Showcase
This week on assembly, 2G demonstrated the importance of exercising a choice to work together for the good of the planet. They focused on being optimistic to change the world for the benefit of everyone. Attached is the Power Point demonstration showcased by 2G.
Learner Attribute
Students are currently focusing on the development of themselves as THINKERS. When we see ourselves as THINKERS we are able to use our knowledge to solve problems and creatively develop actions for future learning.
Class displays
Did you know that classes are beginning to display current work in the administration building foyer? There is a wall at the front of the foyer dedicated to displaying students’ work. Have a look at what 5F have been doing!
CURRICULUM NEWS
1D's procedural text pizzas.
This week, 1D were introduced to the genre of Procedure writing as part of one of their Term Three English units. To understand the generic structure of a procedure and also, how to write the method (steps), 1D students became pizza chefs to make their supreme pizzas. We can almost smell the ingredients from here.
Thank you,
Jemma and 1D
Buddy Classes
Buddy classes, Prep C and 6O joined forces Tuesday morning in the school garden. The year 6 students planted new seedlings with their prep buddies. All students and teachers worked together to start cleaning up the school garden in preparation for the working bee.
Great teamwork!!

Year 6 – You’ll ‘Lovatt’
6D had the honour of interviewing Mrs Pauline Lovatt, great grandmother of our wonderful school captain, Dylan Hassall.
To wrap up our unit of inquiry on contributions to Australian society, we learnt of Pauline and her husband’s contributions in social and humanitarian areas, as well as contributions to infrastructure through civil engineering projects.
The children of 6D were fascinated to learn about how different things were in the early to mid 1900’s and how everyday people contribute meaningfully in their own ways to make a real difference to the lives of many.
A big thank you to Pauline Lovatt and Carolynne Hassall... You are an inspiration and have made a difference to education in Australian society as a result of this experience!

International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Programme
Professional Development
Members of the leadership team undertook three days of professional development in the June/July holidays to enhance understanding of an International Baccalaureate education. The days reinforced our school’s learning journey, strengthening understanding of the framework for planning, implementation and assessment. Ways to share an International Baccalaureate philosophy with our wider community were discussed, with a focus on everyone in our school community aiming to understand and enact the learner profile attributes. The attributes of being inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective, aim to help us all to become responsible and respectful members of local, national and global communities. Students and staff are encouraged to recognise and support these attributes with everyone in our community.
Connections were made with personnel from several schools in Australia who have gained authorisation and are preparing for their evaluation. To be and remain an International Baccalaureate school, the school must show evidence of achieving or working towards identified Standards and Practices. Our school will work on an action plan that outlines a continuing journey towards understanding and implementing the Australian Curriculum through an International Baccalaureate (IB) framework.
Term 3 Curriculum Overviews
The term three curriculum overviews have been posted to the school website. In a move towards trying to use available digital communication tools over photocopying, we will also send the overviews to you electronically. We invite you to read these to gain a greater awareness of the learning your child will undertake as aligned to the Australian Curriculum and the IB framework. Our current trans-disciplinary learning is focused around central ideas linked to the area: How We Express Ourselves.
Units of work
Storytelling began this week in prep as a form of expression. Teachers dramatised the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, much to the delight of the participating audience. We hope some excited prep students shared their retell with you! The units this term are focused on developing skills in communication and thinking and we hope to share some of the journey with you in future newsletter articles.

Year 1-6 - Word Mania
Students from Year 1-6 are embracing the word building challenge game Word Mania, offered through Literacy Planet. Round 1 of the competition begins in week 5, from the 12th August through to the end of the week. Round 2 begins on the 19th of August and Finals week is the 28th, 29th and 30th of August.
Even though we have been on a break, 5 of our year levels are rated number one across the Brisbane Metropolitan Region. A special mention goes to Hagen in 4P who has scored 16 204 points in one game! That is some seriously long-word building! Congratulations Hagen and let’s aim high for the upcoming rounds.
BRAINways
BRAINways Semester 2 Days of Excellence for Gifted and Talented students in the Brisbane North Region will again be held at Aspley State School over the 17th-20th of September. Teachers nominate students whom they believe are highly operating in the particular field of investigation for further enrichment. The program is supplementary to the student’s class learning and your child is not disadvantaged if you choose not to accept an offer. The anticipated cost is $139. Nominated students will receive a letter in the upcoming weeks.
ICAS
International Competitions and Assessments for Schools, (ICAS)
This year, Aspley State School will once again be offering students in year’s three to six the opportunity to participate in the International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS). The format for the assessments is changing and all assessments, with the exception of the writing task for years three and four, will be conducted online.
Letters with instructions on how to nominate and pay, as well as a copy of the Third Party Permission Form, were sent out last term. The Third Party Permission Form is required to be returned to the school office by Friday 19 July and parents have until Wednesday 31 July to nominate and pay for their child’s assessment directly with ICAS Global online.

NAPLAN
Locked down browser for iPad devices (student managed)
The NAP locked down browser (LDB) allows students to securely participate in NAPLAN Online using the online national assessment platform. The browser prevents students from using other applications or websites on their device during assessment events. It is a technical requirement for all devices used for NAPLAN Online assessments to have the NAP LDB installed unless special provisions have been approved by QCAA.
We ask parents with students in year 4-6 to download the free app on their child’s iPad.
NAPLan Locked Down browser for iPad
Download for iOS 10.3.3 or later
iPad Air and above required.
The following devices are not supported:
- iPad mini

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability – NCCD.
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- Year of schooling.
- Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional.
- Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools.
- Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools.
- Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal
FINANCE NEWS
Excursion Deadlines
Last term we had an unfortunate situation of students not being able to attend excursions due to failure to provide permission slips and/or finance by the due date. On each excursion form there is a published due date. This is also published in our school newsletter. This is the date where the excursions are closed and venue and buses organised. Our system integrates the processes of excursion planners, risk assessments, permission letters, invoice statements and finance payments. Once the due date is reached, it is not possible to re-open to account for late payments. We choose the due date to allow families the maximum time to complete forms and make payment. There is no provision to accept late payments unless prior consultation and a payment plan has been entered into before the due date has passed.
The due date is necessary so we can ensure our obligations are met. Students need to be registered on One-School for legal purposes before they can leave the school grounds. Families cannot indemnify the school of their legal obligations because a permission form and/or payment has not been received by the due date.
Due dates must be adhered to. We would like to avoid having disappointed students missing exciting learning opportunities. We encourage families to meet consent and payment deadlines so every child can enjoy the amazing opportunities on offer.
From now onwards if a consent form and/or payment is not received by the due date, affected students will be unable to participate in the excursion/incursion.
Payment Methods
Aspley State School has reviewed the process of receiving payments from students and their families at the school.
I ask, where possible, that parents / carers use QParents or BPoint to make payments. These two methods can accept payment using your credit card. The security and safety of your financial data is paramount. These methods are widely accepted as the most secure methods of payment.
The school will also accept direct transfers into the Aspley State School bank account, or a cash deposit at any branch of the Commonwealth Bank. Please ensure you use your Child's name as a reference so we can easily identify who the payment is for.
Aspley State School Bank Details are: BSB: 064-151 Account Number: 0090 1234 Account Name: 0610 Aspley SS GA
Please use your child’s name as a reference and pay be the due date identified on the permission note. Payment MUST be paid by the due date.
By paying through Q Parents, B Point, Electronic Bank deposit or Cash at Bank deposit you will assist the school to:
- Reduce the amount of cash students / parents carry to school;
- Minimise cash or cheques kept on the premises and reduce the risk of theft;
- People will receive a receipt for the payment at the time of payment;
- Reduce the risk of a student losing money or cheques;
- Reduce the administration time of processing of payments;
- Remove the responsibility for children to be responsible for amounts of cash;
- Keep your financial details private and safe;
- Follows the Dept of Education Qld guidelines for cash collection and cash storage.
From now onwards, Aspley State School will only accept cash payments between the hours of 9.30am and 10.30am on Tuesday and Thursday at the administration office. Credit Card over the counter transactions will also be accepted during this time. Payment envelopes will not be required for these transactions. By paying during these times you will be provided an immediate receipt. Please note in term 3 the office drop boxes will only be used for returning permission forms. No Cash will be accepted through the office drop boxes.
STUDENT ABSENCES
ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
ID Attend help’s us to streamline absence notifications for students. We now have a mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.
The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.
We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

The Music Department have been successful in securing a group booking (golden tickets) for the exciting 2020 QPAC Musical ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Roald Dahl’s delicious tale is a delectable treat featuring songs from the original film, including Pure Imagination, The Candy Man and I’ve Got a Golden ticket, alongside a brand new, toe tapping Broadway score. This promises to be absolutely stunning and we look forward to offering students the opportunity to secure their ‘golden ticket’ to attend this 2020 performance. A parent information letter regarding this exciting event will be issued in Term 4, 2019.

Caring For Our Books by Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. CAMP AUSTRALIA
Week 1
Welcome back to term 3, hope you all had a relaxing holiday. This term we are off to a great start celebrating NADOIC week with the children. Throughout this term we will be learning about animals, space and science. These are themes that have been requested by the children. We also welcome any activity suggestions or ideas from parents.
Winter Holidays
It was a busy time for everyone at Holiday Club. The theme was ‘Around the World’ so we did activities, games and crafts from diverse cultures. We tried our hand (and feet) at Martial Arts, moulded and decorated our own clay bowls, made recycled paper and had a silent ‘carnival’ disco. On the last day we held a cultural show and tell where everyone, educators included, dressed up or brought something from home to represent their family’s culture. There was also plenty of time for children to relax and chill out with a movie, book or quiet games.
This Week
This week is NAIDOC week, the children have already learnt and told us much about NAIDOC. They have asked for dot painting, boomerang making and much more to celebrate this week.
It is that time again when permission forms are to be signed for Extra Curricular Activities being attended by your child this term. Activities can change each term so it is important that new forms are filled out and signed every term.
Please ensure your child’s jumpers are clearly named. We encourage all children to wear a jumper when playing outside when they are with us at this time of year.
We look forward to seeing you and your family soon!
Kind regards,
Aspley OSHC Team

Wanting to be More Involved?
The P&C are looking for some project officers to help with–
- Supporting the school with sustainability projects, including the Container Refund Scheme, and any other initiatives. This role would suit families who are passionate about reducing waste, recycling, reusing, and just want to help Aspley be the best environmentally friendly school community it can be!
- Organisation of the Community Pop Up Garage Sale and Movie Night in Term 4. We mainly need a few people on the ground on the day who can co-ordinate activities, but we’d love your help leading up to the day with any ideas. Lots of guidance will be provided (if needed!).
- Representing our P&C at the P&C’s QLD State Conference. The P&C have agreed to fund 3 delegates to this year’s conference on 6-7 September. We’d love anyone interested in supporting our P&C to come along and learn more about what we do and how to do things better! You are welcome to nominate just one day’s attendance or both! Please email Alice at AspleyPC@gmail.com if you’re interested by July 31st. For more information about State Conference, please visit the link below.

P&C Term 2 Updates:
- The Aspley Foundation Appeal raised $9,095 towards the two shade sail projects, which is just fantastic. While short of the $20,000 goal, it is a great start and the Foundation trustees and P&C are looking at ways that we can work together to find the shortfall. Watch this space! You can donate all year round – get in early on the link below.
https://aspleyssfoundation.com.au/
- Go Green Day raised $565 towards the school’s gardening and sustainability programs. Big thank you to all those who donated and well done to all the children for their great dress-ups!
- Working Bee: Big thank you to all the families who came and helped at the Working Bee on the first weekend of the school holidays. We moved a few tons of rock and bricks; as well as gave the students’ sport shed a real good clean and sorting out. The next working bee project will be held later this term, with plans to give the school Swimming Pool a bit of a spruce up in time for the start of the new Aspley Swimming Club season and the school Swimming Carnival.

The P&C Association plays a vital role in supporting our students and our school – we provide services, such as the Tuckshop and Uniform shop, as well as organise activities and events to help our families come together. We fundraise so we can contribute to making our children’s educational experience the best it can be. Members discuss and vote about how we use the funds raised to support the school. If you’d like to know more, or be more involved, please let us know – we’d be happy to chat!
The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note. COMMUNITY NEWS
Go Green Day
On the last day of semester one all students in the school were invited to participate in Go Green Day. All the money raised was to go towards supporting our beautiful garden,
Together we raised a total of $565 to help our growing of fresh vegetables and fruit. All students had a great time dressing up in both deep and vibrant greens. We thank all the participants for their help.

Rosie's Charity Drive
Thank you for Acting Early!
The Early Act group would like to thank those that contributed to the Rosie's - Friends on the Street charity initiative. By acting early, we have helped to prepare for the cold nights ahead for the many homeless and displaced people in our communities. The blankets are already being given out on our Street Outreaches to patrons in need and they are incredibly grateful.
The members of Early Act did an amazing job of advertising, reminding classes and collecting goods. They are a tribute to Aspley State School and to Early Act.
A big thank you to Margaret from Rotary International who not only donated several items herself, but strengthened the connection between our school and the wider community. She is a joy to work with.
Thank you also to Sinead TenCate and Claire on grade one, for their dedication to Early Act in Term Two. We are very lucky to have people on our staff that are generous of heart.
Together we can achieve a common good so let’s make “good” common in our community... A smile, kind word, action or deed is all it takes to brighten someone’s day.
* 6D promotes random acts of kindness. This involves doing a good deed for someone at home, school or in the community, without recognition. A Kindness Card is passed on (or left behind) upon completion of the deed and reminds others to be kind in turn. This is a great way that we can all take real action in our quest for a better, more peaceful world. Please feel free come and get some Kindness Cards from the 6D classroom if you are interested.
'The donations collected for Rosies,'
'Early Act members should be very proud of their efforts.'
