PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Parent and Community Framework
Genuine parent engagement exists when there is a meaningful relationship between parents and teachers with the shared goal of maximising learning and wellbeing outcomes for students.
Parents are generally a child’s first teacher in their early years. A large body of evidence, spanning several decades, identifies the benefits of continued parent engagement throughout schooling for student learning outcomes. Parent engagement has been shown to improve students’ self-esteem, school attendance, and behaviour at school. In fact, Hattie (2008) estimated that effective parent engagement could add the equivalent of 2 or 3 extra years to a child’s education.
Parent engagement extends beyond parent involvement in volunteering at the school, to having a deliberate focus on influencing and improving learning and wellbeing outcomes. Parents are provided with ideas and strategies and are encouraged to collaborate with the school and community to strengthen partnerships and directly assist in supporting their child’s learning. Effective parent engagement creates authentic relationships valued by each party.
Aspley State School has a team of parents and staff reviewing the Parent and Community Engagement Framework to make an action plan for our learning community, and create the preferred futures for the school so we can work together to maximise student learning and wellbeing.

Social Media
We spend a great deal of time supporting young people to learn about the responsibility of being a contributing citizen and to use effective communications and digital platforms to assist a positive cause and learning.
We ask parents and carers to model these skills to their children and to use social media appropriately and in a positive, constructive way. I ask that parents reflect on their use of social media and ask yourself: Is the content / forum where I am sharing, helpful to myself or others?
Last week students in years 3-4 and years 5-6 participated in a workshop which enabled them to increase their understanding of the skills they require to access exciting, learning opportunities and to be safe online. Talk to your child about what they learnt at this workshop.
At school, students logon to the internet using their individual user identity. They access the internet using sophisticated software that filters access so they can only access appropriate and safe learning environments. Their email communications are word scanned and any inappropriate language is directed to the principal / deputy principal. A consequence for misuse of school resources may be that they are denied online access or ICT resources for a period and parents are informed.
At home you may apply parental settings to your computer / device so that children are able to be supported to be safe in their online access and communications. See parent resources at the Australian Government’s eSafety Commissioner website:
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
Check out the excellent parent resources at Kids Health Website:

Year 6 Trip to the National Capital
Sixty-nine year six students are eagerly packing some winter woollies to go to Canberra on Sunday. The group will be escorted by school staff and will go to Taronga Zoo in Sydney and then make their way to Canberra, for a tour of the many exciting educational learning sites there. Students will enjoy learning at Parliament House, The High Court, The Museum of Democracy at old Parliament House, The War Memorial, Questacon, Royal Australian Mint, National Museum, National Arboretum, National Film and Sound Archives, Canberra Glass Works, and a day at the snow!
We thank the teachers who kindly make this exceptional opportunity available for our students.
Outdoor Learning Environment
We are excited to receive Department of Education, Qld, funds to enclose the library outdoor learning area (LOLA) to create a STEAM space where students will be able to explore science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematical resources to apply of their thinking in challenging learning opportunities. Construction will occur during the next month.
My Amazing Body
Ever wanted to know why hitting your funny bone isn’t so funny? Or how much can a newborn baby really see, and what’s the best way to take care of your gut bacteria? A new Queensland Health podcast explores interesting, unknown and misunderstood parts of the human body. My Amazing Body features interviews with medical experts and stories from real Queenslanders and all the content is family friendly.
Is your child getting the flu?
The signs and symptoms of influenza in children could include a sore throat, fever, chills, headache, stomach and body aches, feeling tired, coughing, a runny nose, no appetite, or diarrhoea.
If your child is ill, parents and carers are reminded to keep them at home and contact the school to let us know. If you have any concerns about your child’s health, please seek medical advice.

Word Mania Round 1 has begun and we are already in the top 10 schools for the Brisbane Metropolitan Region. Our aim is to be in the top 10 nationwide by the end of the week. Your child logs onto Literacy Planet with his/her user name and password and builds as many words as possible in the time limit. Round 2 begins on the 19th of August until the 23rd August 2019. Our year six students are on camp, so the onus is on our remaining year 6 students to get us over the line! Let’s try to make it to the grand finals in as many year levels (1-6) as we can.
Congratulations to Liam N in 4P for his astounding scores in Word Maina!
We look forward to sharing more results with you next newsletter.
BRAINways
Students have been nominated by their class teachers to participate in the BRAINways, Gifted and Talented Programs of Excellence. This is an optional extra curricula activity and should you wish for your child to accept the nomination, registration and payment occurs online through BRAINways administration.
First Aid Notification
Should your child have an accident at school where they have bumped his/her head, the school process is to phone a parent to alert you of the fall. For a high impact event an ambulance will be called first and then the parent. Our staff are trained in first aide and will communicate with you should they report to the office for instances other than small slips, grazes or trips etc.
Health Plans
Should your child require specific treatment aligned to a diagnosed medical condition, please send the related Health Plan that is provided by your child’s doctor. This health plan notifies school staff of the specific treatment / considerations to support your child’s wellness and engagement at school.
Student Safety
In the interest of student safety only use authorised entries to the school through the school gates located on Maundrell Terrace (main gate) and Horn Road (Office / Hall / Prep).
Please remember, when walking through the administration carpark to always use the yellow crossing. The carpark is not to be used as a walkway to classes or the library.
Students who enter the school grounds from Maundrell Terrace please use the new gate and not the driveway, where cars are entering and leaving the premises.
Parents / carers please support your child / children to be safe.
Music
During the music messages at Monday’s assembly, members of the senior ensembles demonstrated the result of talent and hard work. By watching this demonstration, we hope that the students in Years three and four are encouraged to participate the Instrumental Music programme. Thank you Kate, Emma, Liesel and Shivani.

Showcases
Classes continue to link their current learning in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves at our assembly showcases.
2D showed us how the most popular song at age 13 can become a lasting memory as we age. They chose to innovate on a current hit song Old Town Road, showing considerable talent and swagger in their western hats. Students of 2D will no doubt remember the experience and lyrics for many years to come.
3K showed us Torres Strait Islander story-telling, bush medicine and Aboriginal art work and dance was all part of year 3s excursion to Ngtana Lui. 3K shared photos and recounted the experience to all at assembly, recognising the important contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to our cultural and social wellbeing.
NAIDOC Week Competition Winner
Congratulations to Charlie W, Year 2 for winning the Koori Kids colouring competition sponsored by the Geebung, Bald Hill, Zillmere and Aspley RSL Sub-branch Inc. Charlie received his special medallion award from club president, Mr Harry Boxsell.

Aspley Reading Club
Congratulations to the students who have achieved their individual reading targets. Your dedication to achieving your goals is applauded. Thank you too to our student mentors. Your commitment is what helps make the Aspley Reading Club such a success.
BOOST
We are off to a great start with the year 2 and year 4 BOOST cycle with a focus on improving writing.
Sentence structure is the focus of instruction in Year 2, with students examining a range of sentence types. Year 2 students will write a narrative using their knowledge of sentences that help paint a picture for the reader.
Year 4 are learning about Africa through their research this week. Students are reading texts, highlighting key words, organising their notes in a graphic organiser and then writing these notes into a topic sentence and then more sentences to form a paragraph for each idea.
If you have a child in year 2 or 4, please talk with them about what they are learning to do in BOOST.
Volunteers- Support A Reader
Support- a Reader Volunteers
We believe that one of the most important skills we teach children is how to be confident and competent readers. Some children find it more difficult than others to acquire these skills and need a little extra help to become fluent and to enjoy reading.
In previous years, Aspley State School has implemented a highly successful programme called 'Support-a-Reader', This was due to the generosity of volunteers in our school community. We would love for this program to continue in 2019 and onwards. Support-a-Reader is based on the philosophy that children who need additional assistance with the reading process will benefit from regular support on a one-to-one basis with a trained volunteer.
We are seeking volunteers from the school community (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc) who have a passion for helping children read. Each child on the program benefits from frequent reading practice for up to 15 minutes per day. Knowing that your time is precious, we are seeking volunteers who can dedicate their time for 1 day a week from 2.15pm-3pm. A training session will be provided for all volunteers.
If you would like to be a part of this highly successful program, please email Sally Agnew – Head of Student Support Services on sagne2@eq.edu.au
Aspley Bear naming competition
Congratulations to Mia Long from 4G for successfully nominating the name for the new Aspley Mascot Bear!
‘Buddy’ bear was selected from hundreds of suggestions made from students throughout the school.
We hope to see Buddy Bear at future school events, encouraging Aspley children to do their best.
Thankyou Mia Le Vieux in Year 6 for suggesting the idea of having a mascot and making a positive contribution to our school.

Eco Heroes
Nyla, Kayla, Lily and Maddie from Year four have reformed a volunteer group to take care of the school and promote environmentally friendly practices.The students have a particular interest in removing the rubbish from the school grounds as a way of encouraging all students to remain litter free.
Community Coffee
At the community coffee on Wednesday 7 August, participants were presented with comprehensive information regarding internet usage and cyber safety for their children. This information was presented by Internet Safe Training.
Internet Safe Training is an organisation founded by Brett Lee is. Brett is a former undercover internet detective and founder of Iness. Each year Brett and his team talk to thousands of Students, Teachers and Parents about how to keep children safe online.
Internet Safe Training also provides families, schools and other organisations with opportunities for deeper understanding through online learning courses. Internet Safe Training is a government certified provider with The Office of the Childrens eSafety Commissioner.

Parental Controls: Content-Privacy restrictions and Screen time
One of the many questions asked is how to manage children’s access to some content on the internet and how to set reasonable time limits for using devices. The following link gives step by step instructions on how to set both parental controls on Apple devices.

CURRICULUM NEWS
Ngatana Lui
Torres Strait Islander story-telling, bush medicine and Aboriginal art work and dance was all part of Year Three excursion to Ngatana Lui. 3K shared photos and recounted the experience to all at assembly, recognising the important contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to our cultural and social wellbeing.

6D cooking with fractions:
In 6D, we have been learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. We converted recipes as a culminating task to calculate fractions for cooking. This was easily the tastiest fraction lesson ever!

FINANCE NEWS
Excursion Deadlines
Last term we had an unfortunate situation of students not being able to attend excursions due to failure to provide permission slips and/or finance by the due date. On each excursion form there is a published due date. This is also published in our school newsletter. This is the date where the excursions are closed and venue and buses organised. Our system integrates the processes of excursion planners, risk assessments, permission letters, invoice statements and finance payments.
Once the due date is reached, it is not possible to re-open to account for late payments. We choose the due date to allow families the maximum time to complete forms and make payment. There is no provision to accept late payments unless prior consultation and a payment plan has been entered into before the due date has passed.
The due date is necessary so we can ensure our obligations are met. Students need to be registered on OneSchool for legal purposes before they can leave the school grounds. Families cannot indemnify the school of their legal obligations because a permission form and/or payment has not been received by the due date.
Due dates must be adhered to. We would like to avoid having disappointed students missing exciting learning opportunities. We encourage families to meet consent and payment deadlines so every child can enjoy the amazing opportunities on offer.
From now onwards if a consent form and/or payment is not received by the due date, affected students will be unable to participate in the excursion/incursion.
All parents/carers will have received a statement outlining outstanding payments. The due date may or may not have passed – this is purely a snapshot of what is on your account. If you believe they is something showing that your child did not attend please contact the office to advise. If you still have an SRS payment due this needs to be paid in full for access to be given to your student.
Payment Methods
We ask that either BPOINT or QPARENTS are used to make payments – these payment methods ensure your payment is credited straight to your students account.
These two methods can accept payment using your credit card. The security and safety of your financial data is paramount. These methods are widely accepted as the most secure methods of payment.
By paying through Q Parents and B Point you will assist the school to:
- Reduce the amount of cash students / parents carry to school;
- Minimise cash or cheques kept on the premises and reduce the risk of theft;
- People will receive a receipt for the payment at the time of payment;
- Reduce the risk of a student losing money or cheques;
- Reduce the administration time of processing of payments;
- Remove the responsibility for children to be responsible for amounts of cash;
- Keep your financial details private and safe;
- Follows the Dept of Education Qld guidelines for cash collection and cash storage.
If you are unable to make payment through these methods the school will also accept direct transfers into the Aspley State School bank account, or a cash deposit at any branch of the Commonwealth Bank. These payments do not get directly credited to your students account and still need to be processed by the school.
Please ensure you use your Childs name as a reference so we can easily identify who the payment is for. Aspley State School Bank Details are:
BSB: 064-151
Account Number: 0090 1234
Account Name: 0610 Aspley SS GA
Please use your child’s name as a reference and pay be the due date identified on the permission note. Payment MUST be paid by the due date.
From now onwards, Aspley State School will only accept cash payments between the hours of 9.30am and 10.30am on Tuesday and Thursday at the administration office. Credit Card over the counter transactions will also be accepted during this time. Payment envelopes will not be required for these transactions. By paying during these times you will be provided an immediate receipt. Please note in term 3 the office drop boxes will only be used for returning permission forms. No Cash will be accepted through the office drop boxes.
STUDENT ABSENCES
ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
ID Attend help’s us to streamline absence notifications for students. We now have a mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family
reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

P&C NEWS 16 August 2019
The Father’s Day Stall is the next event on the P&C’s calendar. We love spoiling dads and grandpops If you have some time on your hands, we’d love some helpers on the day – August 29th (Thursday) and August 30th (8-9am, Friday). Please note, some children will be attending SingFest, so will not be able to purchase at the stall with their class. They are invited to come to the stall Friday morning to pick up a special something.
We are accepting donations until Monday 26th August – either re-giftable presents, or donations of sweet treats, jars and succulents. Please see the poster for more info.
Prep Families would have received a note home regarding their Prep Tote Bag Fundraiser. A reminder that these notes and payments are due by Wednesday 28 August. Please return all forms to the office. Big thank you to Karen R and the Prep Staff for helping organise this activity so that our Prep families can have a wonderful memento of their first school year!
TUCKSHOP NEWS
- Tuckshop Opening Hours – 8.30am to 1.45pm Tuesday to Friday.
- I am sad to advise our community that Mrs Jane Mulrooney, our Tuckshop Convenor/Manager, will be leaving us to take up a position at her children’s high school at the end of Term 3. Jane has helped adapt our tuckshop menu to the Healthy Choices Guidelines; has often provided catering to school visitors and at school events; introduced re-usable pots; streamlined our packaging options; and delighted our students with YUM cake and Mrs Hinds with coconut fruit slice. We wish Jane all the best as she takes on her new role. The P&C will be advertising for someone to take over this paid role, and we welcome anyone with experience in running a food business to contact us to discuss further: aspleypc@gmail.com. Expressions of interest close Friday 30 August.
- VOLUNTEERS are needed to ensure our children and staff are fed! If you can help – even one hour on a Thursday or Friday morning is greatly appreciated!

The P&C Association plays a vital role in supporting our students and our school – we provide services, such as the Tuckshop and Uniform shop, as well as organise activities and events to help our families come together. We fundraise so we can contribute to making our children’s educational experience the best it can be. Members discuss and vote about how we use the funds raised to support the school. If you’d like to know more, or be more involved, please let us know – we’d be happy to chat!
The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note. Please contact us at pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au to reach all members of the executive; or aspleypc@gmail.com to reach Alice (President) directly.
COMMUNITY NEWS
EarlyAct Club
Hello Aspley families! It’s already week 5 – how exciting! The EarlyAct club is well and truly underway, and this term we have chosen to raise awareness for polio. Polio is a highly contagious, crippling condition that is incurable once contracted, but preventable by a simple vaccine. Numerous organisations have worked tirelessly to eradicate polio by introducing the vaccine to underdeveloped countries, however there a few countries where polio is still present. Sadly, polio predominantly affects children, meaning their condition is lifelong. Let’s work together to raise awareness for the countries that still need the polio vaccine! Watch this space in the newsletter and listen out on assembly for ways you can get involved with eradicating polio. Thanks for your kindness and for helping the EarlyAct club make our world a better place. Chappy Sinead.
