PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Aspley Art Affair -Turning the Tide

Students and teachers are very excited to see the completion of their visual arts response, ready for the Aspley Art Affair, to be held at the school hall on  Friday 6th September 2019 from 6.15 pm – 8.30 pm. Parents and friends are invited to come along and enjoy the extensive art exhibition, which communicates the students’ response to the cross curriculum theme of sustainability.

At the Aspley Art Affair you will be delighted by musical performances from guest musician Mr Stanislav Vanek, the school choir, choralists, piano soloists and a surprise buddy class collaboration. There will be individual student art works on display. Bring you wallet and bid for one of the magnificent collaborative art works up for auction. Mr Smith, Deputy Principal will be our special guest auctioneer at the Aspley Art Affair!

We would like to thank our resident artist, Wendy Cumes Rowell who has coordinated this event in our school. Special thanks also to artist Debra Nichols for her artistic talents. Special thank you to the volunteer parents who have assisted with framing and the display of the art works.

How We Express Ourselves

In recent weeks students across the school have been learning through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, trans-disciplinary theme, How We Express Ourselves. This week, I spoke to some students in year four, who detailed their learning goals and achievements.

Tiffany, year 4, detailed that in How We Express Ourselves the students had learnt about communication as a key to advertisements. She said she had thought about strategies utilised to successfully market and sell a product. She explained that she was required to be persuasive to promote sales and ensure the success of the product. She detailed the year four students invented a notional breakfast cereal and planned and constructed the packaging along with a film advertisement to boost the product to be successful, in the Australian market launch.

Dana, year 4, invented the cereal called Breakfast Crunchies and she explained that in her advertising, on the packaging and in her film advertisement, she had used the notion of being a VIP. Dana detailed how she had selected specific images, commands and crafted her script writing to make the product appealing through a lens of visual appeal, health information, nutrition and fun. She said she had used an attractive person as an image and utilised commands like Get a box before it runs out! and Taste the flavour!

Dana said, as a result of her learning, she now scrutinises advertising and tries to analyse the persuasive language and see what influences promotional companies use. Dana said she enjoys the language features she has used in her advertisements and that her writing goal was to continue to use more complex vocabulary and sophisticated adjectives. Our very impressive year four students are going to be wise consumers!

Teacher Observation and Peer Feedback

Teachers work to continually ensure their pedagogical practices are most effective and they regualry model lessons for their peers and receive constructive feedback. Peer teachers provide detailed feedback aligned with the Professional Standards for Teachers to support their colleague’s continued high performance. This term teachers have observed writing lessons and provided feedback about the pedagogical practices observed and provided feedback about the IB unit of inquiry, through using qualitative data, from student interviews.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

This week students in year 3 and 5 were provided a copy of their 2019 NAPLAN report. Parents / carers please take the time to read the detailed explanation about the assessment and understand your child’s achievement in this series of assessments.

Aspley State School students achieved higher that the state and national mean scale score achievement in every area including: Reading; Writing; Spelling; Grammar and Punctuation; and Numeracy. Congratulations to our students and all of our teachers and staff!

In the priority area of writing in 2019, Aspley State School achieved 70.5 % of year 3 students in the upper two bands, compared to 49 % in the state and 52 % in Australia. For writing in 2019, for year 5, Aspley State School achieved 44.4 % in the upper two bands compared to 35 % in the state and 37 % in the Nation. Congratulations to our avid and skilled writers!

In 2020, all year 3 and year 5 students at Aspley State School will sit NAPLAN online from 12- 20 May 2010. In readiness for this, next week students in year 2 and year 4 will participate in a readiness test which provides them the opportunity to experience an online, test format and to test the network to ensure it will support the many users. Year 2 students will use school computers and year 4 will use their own or school iPads to access the readiness test next week. Students require operational headphones for the readiness test, NAPLAN and for school activities.

NAP App

Students in year 4-6 that bring their own iPad devise to school are required to download the free NAP app which supports some of the device features to be disabled for this test. This app provides some sample NAPLAN test items too. A letter was sent home to all students in year 2-4 detailing this request. The app is installed on all school devices.

Student Behaviour

It is vital that all students demonstrate the required behavioural standards and expectations of the Aspley State School. Sadly, I have recently suspended a number of students who have been unsafe, unkind or their behaviour has been prejudicial to the good order and management of the school. Each student is considered on a case by case basis. Consequences are considered for all. All students and staff, have the right to come to school to learn and work in a positive safe and supportive learning environment.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Aspley State School Early Years Network (ASSEYN)

Aspley State School has been part of a network with Early Childhood providers in our area for the last 4 years. This network involves the prep teachers, admin personnel and support teachers from the school and teachers and directors from the Early Learning Centres who feed into our school.

These professional conversations are very useful as it allows the school to put in place programs and support needed to cater for new preparatory students each year. It also allows pre prep providers and prep classroom teachers to understand what the students are doing and where they are heading in the learning journeys as a whole.

The parent signed consent forms requested by the school are very important as this gives us the permission to make visits and speak to your child’s pre prep teacher. We request that you sign the pre prep permission notes (available at your pre prep centre) so that they can share teaching and learning information about your child with our school. This is done by way of transition statements and school visits.

Date Claimers:

November 6 - Prep Information Evening 6pm - 7:30pm
December 4 – Prep Orientation Day 9am - 10:30am

Prep Readiness – milestones

Emotional and social development milestones your child may achieve at this age include:

  • Enjoys playing with other children and pleasing his or her friends
  • Shares and takes turns, at least most of the time, and understands rules of games
  • Understands and obeys rules; however, your 4- to 5-year-old will still be demanding and uncooperative at times.
  • Is becoming more independent
  • Expresses anger verbally, rather than physically (most of the time)

4- to 5-Year-Old Development: When to Be Concerned

  • All kids grow and develop at their own pace. Don't worry if your child has not reached all of these milestones at this time. But you should notice a gradual progression in growth and development as your child gets older. If you don't, or if your child has signs of possible developmental delay, as listed below, talk to your child's doctor.

Possible signs of developmental delay in 4- to 5-year-old children include:

  • Being extremely afraid, shy, or aggressive
  • Being extremely anxious when separated from a parent
  • Being easily distracted and unable to focus on one task for more than five minutes
  • Not wanting to play with other children
  • Having a limited amount of interests
  • Not making eye contact or responding to other people
  • Being unable to say his or her full name
  • Rarely pretending or fantasizing
  • Often seeming sad and unhappy and not expressing a wide range of emotions
  • Being unable to build a tower using more than eight blocks
  • Having trouble holding a crayon
  • Having problems eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom
  • Having trouble undressing, cannot brush his or her teeth, or wash and dry hands, without help

Also, if your child resists or struggles with doing things that he or she was once able to do, tell your child's doctor. This can be a sign of a developmental disorder. If your child does have developmental delay, there are many treatments available to help your child overcome it.

NAPLAN Online update

Many Queensland state schools are currently undertaking training activities in preparation for NAPLAN Online.

To help schools prepare for NAPLAN Online, our school will participate in a School Readiness Test (SRT) between 19 August to 11 October 2019.

The SRT is a familiarisation activity to help confirm each school’s technical, student and staff readiness, and will help our school prepare for a transition to NAPLAN Online.

It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student test results.

The SRT provides two tests that take approximately 45 minutes to complete: a writing test for Years 5, 7 and 9 and an omnibus test for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The collective learnings of Queensland schools taking part in the SRT will help transitioning schools to have positive experiences with NAPLAN Online.

The NAPLAN Online SRT is delivered to students using a locked-down browser so that students cannot access the internet or spell checkers whilst testing. Interested families can view the technical requirements on the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority’s (ACARA) assessment platform website:

https://www.assessform.edu.au/layouts/Technology/Overview.aspx

NAPLAN Online will provide a better assessment for all. It will:

  • Feature tailored testing which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability resulting in better assessment.
  • Provide a more engaging test experience for students.
  • Provide more precise results so teachers can identify learning priorities and meet individual student needs.

Parents and carers can also familiarise themselves with the NAPLAN Online platform by using the public demonstration site available at:

http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplan-online-public-demonstration-site

Further information about NAPLAN Online including frequently asked questions and answers are available at:

http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online

We will keep you up-to-date with how the transition to NAPLAN Online is progressing, but if there’s anything you need in the meantime you can contact Mrs Leann Griffith-Baker or Mrs Donna Boaler.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Max who competed at the State Athletic Championships on Friday 16 August at QE11. He finished the Under 11 Discus competition with a throw of over 31 metres. Max came 5th in the whole state of Queensland. Well done Max!

Assembly

Please note that the Choral performance from the Combined Singfest Choir scheduled for assembly on Monday 3 September has been re-scheduled for Friday 6 September at the Aspley Art Affair.

4G presented the learning that has been achieved through the Inquiry Unit, How we express ourselves. They investigated well known advertisements for the use of persuasion through advertising. Students have been planning for the production of an advertisement and are ready to film.

Canberra

It was a great pleasure to spend last week with the Year Six students in Canberra. The students rose to the challenge of maintaining a high level of self-management, engagement with learning and responsible behaviour. We received many compliments from members of the public regarding the organisation and behaviour of the group as a whole. Well done to everyone.

Year Five Senior Leadership process

Friday 30 August is the beginning of the 2019 Senior Leadership process for the current Year Five cohort. From now until the end of the year, the students in Year Five will learn about leadership at Aspley State School.

The following document outlines the processes and timelines for 2019 and 2020. Please encourage your child to maintain due dates should they wish to proceed with the process beyond the training sessions.

DRAMA CLUB

The ‘Aspley State School Drama Club’ will commence on Thursday 10th October (Term 4 Week 1) at 3pm to 4:30pm. Students who have been accepted will receive a letter of acceptance and a contract, which needs to be signed and returned by the end of this term. We are looking forward to working with students in years four, five and six, during fourth term, to develop their musical theatre skills.

Thank you,

Mrs Vener
Drama Club Co-ordinator

ASPLEY SPEAKS OUT

It is time for our school’s annual speaking competition ‘Aspley Speaks Out’.

At Aspley State School we believe it is important to provide opportunities for students to develop a variety of talents.  We are proud to promote ‘Aspley Speaks Out’ as a program which aims to give students the opportunity to share their ideas, interests and experiences in front of their peers and a broader audience.  Aspley Speaks Out’ enables students to develop the building blocks of public speaking; confidence, clarity, and communication, which are all very important life-long skills.

As part of their in-class assessment, years five and six students are required to present a speech on a topic of their choice to their class peers.  The class teacher then had the difficult task of choosing five students to go into the semi-finals. Earlier this week we held the semi-finals for both year levels and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each of the semi-finalists and acknowledge the work that they have put in to get to this point.  It was wonderful to hear the variety in their speeches and see the confidence in their deliveries.

On conclusion of each of the semi-finals, our judges Mrs Griffith-Baker, Mrs Boaler, Mrs Antony and Mrs Youitt selected five finalists from each year level to present their speeches once more at a special ‘Aspley Speaks Out’ evening on Wednesday 11th September at 6:30pm in our school hall.  We invite parents, family members and other interested members of our school community to join us to help celebrate the hard work and dedication of these talented students.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at the finals.

FINANCE NEWS

Excursion Deadlines

Last term we had an unfortunate situation of students not being able to attend excursions due to failure to provide permission slips and/or finance by the due date. On each excursion form there is a published due date. This is also published in our school newsletter. This is the date where the excursions are closed and venue and buses organised. Our system integrates the processes of excursion planners, risk assessments, permission letters, invoice statements and finance payments. Once the due date is reached, it is not possible to re-open to account for late payments. We choose the due date to allow families the maximum time to complete forms and make payment. There is no provision to accept late payments unless prior consultation and a payment plan has been entered into before the due date has passed.

The due date is necessary so we can ensure our obligations are met. Students need to be registered on OneSchool for legal purposes before they can leave the school grounds. Families cannot indemnify the school of their legal obligations because a permission form and/or payment has not been received by the due date.

Due dates must be adhered to. We would like to avoid having disappointed students missing exciting learning opportunities. We encourage families to meet consent and payment deadlines so every child can enjoy the amazing opportunities on offer.

From now onwards if a consent form and/or payment is not received by the due date, affected students will be unable to participate in the excursion/incursion.

Payment Methods

Aspley State School has reviewed the process of receiving payments from students and their families at the school.

I ask, where possible, that parents / carers use QParents or BPoint to make payments. These two methods can accept payment using your credit card. The security and safety of your financial data is paramount. These methods are widely accepted as the most secure methods of payment.

The school will also accept direct transfers into the Aspley State School bank account, or a cash deposit at any branch of the Commonwealth Bank. Please ensure you use your Childs name as a reference so we can easily identify who the payment is for.

Aspley State School Bank Details are:

BSB: 064-151
Account Number: 0090 1234
Account Name: 0610 Aspley SS GA

Please use your child’s name as a reference and pay be the due date identified on the permission note. Payment MUST be paid by the due date.

By paying through Q Parents, B Point, Electronic Bank deposit or Cash at Bank deposit you will assist the school to:

  • Reduce the amount of cash students / parents carry to school;
  • Minimise cash or cheques kept on the premises and reduce the risk of theft;
  • People will receive a receipt for the payment at the time of payment;
  • Reduce the risk of a student losing money or cheques;
  • Reduce the administration time of processing of payments;
  • Remove the responsibility for children to be responsible for amounts of cash;
  • Keep your financial details private and safe;
  • Follows the Dept of Education Qld guidelines for cash collection and cash storage.

From now onwards, Aspley State School will only accept cash payments between the hours of 9.30am and 10.30am on Tuesday and Thursday at the administration office. Credit Card over the counter transactions will also be accepted during this time. Payment envelopes will not be required for these transactions. By paying during these times you will be provided an immediate receipt. Please note in term 3 the office drop boxes will only be used for returning permission forms. No Cash will be accepted through the office drop boxes.

STUDENT ABSENCES

ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794

ID Attend help’s us to streamline absence notifications for students. We now have a mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.

One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

Aspley State School P&C Association!

The P&C Association plays a vital role in supporting our students and our school – we provide services, such as the Tuckshop and Uniform shop, as well as organise activities and events to help our families come together. We fundraise so we can contribute to making our children’s educational experience the best it can be. Members discuss and vote about how we use the funds raised to support the school. If you’d like to know more, or be more involved, please let us know – we’d be happy to chat!

The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note. Please contact us at pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au to reach all members of the executive; or aspleypc@gmail.com to reach Alice (President) directly.

Hi Aspley families! It’s approaching that exciting time of year when we do Operation Christmas Child. From next week, Monday 2nd September, there will be shoeboxes in the Student Support Room (Blue Room) for families to purchase at $1 each. Then, you can start filling your shoebox with exciting gifts for disadvantaged children around the world! Please find below a list of suggested and prohibited items to pack in your shoebox. This list will also be displayed around the school:

Suggested items: something to wear (shirt, shorts, cap, shoes), something to love (teddy bear, soft toy), something special (sunglasses, carry bag, bracelets, a personal note), something for school (books, pencils), something to play with (tennis ball, yoyo, skipping rope), something for personal hygiene (face washer, hairbrush, toothbrush)

Prohibited items: items that leak or melt, food or lollies of any kind, used or damaged items, breakable items, items that can scare or harm a child, gambling-related items, religious literature

Please note: the organisation that facilitates Operation Christmas Child, called Samaritan’s Purse, is a Christian organisation. There is Christian material displayed on the brochures and boxes. This project is completely voluntary and there is no requirement to take part.

I am very excited to partner with you to make a difference in the lives of children living in poverty. Chappy Sinead
