PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Welcome back to Aspley State School for an action packed term 4.

This term, all students will focus on gaining and applying, an increasing understanding of the of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Attributes. They will explore the meaning of what it looks like to demonstrate these attributes within their learning.

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the learner attributes as they strive to be:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Open-Minded
  • Caring
  • Risk Takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Room

Last term we were able to access additional funding from the Department of Education, Qld to enclose the library annex to create another learning space, being the STEAM space for students. During the next few weeks the room will be set up for students to use this space to design, construct and apply their ideas. Thank you to Maddie, Brendan, Raphael and Eashaan and the other students in year 6, who have been a driving force in this exciting project.

MakerSpace

Mrs Boaler, Deputy Principal and some students are setting up a MakerSpace in C Block. Students with their teachers will be able to come along design, create and appraise their solutions to design challenges. The first project underway will be the construction of some Gingerbread Houses that will be used as Christmas decorations at the Christmas Concert. If any families have donations of reused materials from home or their workplace e.g. small pine timber offcuts, corks, plastic bottle tops, egg cartons, cardboard shapes, decorations, tools, storage containers etc. please bring them to the C Block MakerSpace room (next to Miss Crosland’s classroom).

Swimming

Swimming has commenced in term four for students in Prep and year levels 4-6. It is exciting to see the enthusiasm that the students have displayed for the swimming program. Swimming is an extra-curricular learning opportunity for the students at Aspley State School. The high quality swim program is provided by Swim Solutions.

Preps will enjoy a Water Fun Day on Thursday 28 November 2019. Parents / carers are welcome to attend this special event.

Older students will work towards improving their swim skills, proficiency and lap times in preparation for the Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival to be held on Thursday 5 December 2019. Mr Schmidt, PE teacher, will provide the year 3 students an opportunity to participate in time trials for consideration for their potential representation at a District level, prior to the Swimming Carnival.

Swim Solutions provide quality swimming instruction for students at Aspley State School. They provide a summative feedback to parents, after the series of lessons, to inform parents of their child’s swimming and water safety skills and abilities.

World Teacher’s Day

On Friday 25 October we recognise all the teachers and school staff who are dedicated to make a difference in the lives of our young people. At Aspley State School we have dedicated, high performing teachers and staff who care deeply about our students and their learning progress. On this day, and every day, we are thankful for their contribution to our school community.

School Chaplaincy News

Thank you for the overwhelming positive response to Operation Christmas Child in 2019. These parcels of practical and delightful gifts will make a difference to the overseas children, in less fortunate circumstances, who will receive them just before Christmas. Just a reminder that your filled boxes are due back at school by Friday, 18th of October 2019. Please take the boxes to Miss Oliver or Miss Mann’s classroom. Additional boxes are available for $1.00 from Student Support Services.

It is also with great sadness that Chappy, Sinead Ten Carte, has informed us that she will conclude her employment with Scripture Union at Aspley State School at the end of Week 3. Chappy Sinead has made a difference at Aspley State School during the eighteen months that she has been with us. We wish her well as she moves on to accept her next new life challenge. Chappy Sinead remarked “It has been wonderful to be a part of the Aspley community and I wish all families and staff the very best. Have a wonderful Term 4.”

The position for a new chaplain at Aspley State School, will be advertised in November 2019, with a view of a new employee to commence in 2020.

Special RSL Guests

Next Wednesday, 16th October 2019, members of the Geebung, Zillmere, Bald Hills and Aspley RSL will attend an extended rehearsal for the Senior Band. We look forward to our special guests joining us on this day!

Aspley Community Markets

Aspley State School’s Student Council will have a stall at the forthcoming, Aspley Community Market where they will sell retired school furniture, old notice boards, desks and seating. Each year the school uses funding from Community Use Agreements to refurbish two classrooms each year. In 2017-2018, the school refurbished three year one classrooms and the LOTE room. In 2019 we have refurbished two year 6 classrooms. Room refurbishments often include painting, new noticeboards, chairs, desk tops and in some rooms, new teaching wall units.

Come along a grab a bargain that will be able to be repurposed for your home or garage. Money raised from this stall will be used to buy equipment for the STEAM room. See the P & C News for more information about the Aspley Community Markets on Saturday, 19 October at 3.30 pm – 6.00 pm at Aspley State School.

Community Coffee

All parents are invited to attend the Term 4 Community Coffee to be held on Wednesday 23 October 2019 at 6.00 – 7.00 pm in the school hall. Come along and hear from our Primary Years Programme Coordinator, Mrs Leanne Youitt who will talk about the International Baccalaureate Learner attributes and how students and their families can apply these attributes to learning and life.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS

ARC

The Aspley Reading Club will operate on the following dates this term. The children have got into their routine and understand the expectations. Please encourage your child to continue reading on the days they do not attend the club as the more they practice the more success they will achieve.

Prep Classes

A note to be part of Sunshine Classics has gone home with your Prep child. This is an additional reading program to assist your child with their reading. If you would like to be part of this, please fill in the form and submit the payment to the office. Once this is received, you will receive a username and password to access the program.

Camp Quality

On Wednesday 9 October, Camp Quality visited our school to present to our students the ins and outs of cancer. Through a puppet show, they helped dispel the myths and misconceptions that are commonly associated with the illness.

Everybody can help!

Well done, Ethan and Declan for doing your bit to keep the environment clean! The boys made good use of Brisbane City Council’s rubbish pickers and picked 739 pieces of rubbish over the September school holidays. What a great effort! Keep up the good work boys and we hope that others can learn from your good example.

Resilience: What is it?

Resilience is about not letting things get us down and being able to bounce back and move on. The link below gives us some useful tips to understand and build resilience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYsRGe0tfZc

Change in weather

Please support us and encourage your child/children to apply their sun screen before school each day and top up at school before the second lunch break.

We have a no hat, no play rule so please remind your child/children to check their bag for a hat. If they do not have one, they can choose to go to the library during the break or sit and read in the shade.

Encourage them to drink lots of water as it is important to keep hydrated in the hot weather.

Our main concern is students being safe and being able to access learning as best they can.

Before School waiting areas

It is beginning to get brighter earlier in the day but a reminder that all students not enrolled in Before School Care must wait at the Eastern side of the hall and be self-managed if they arrive earlier than 8.15am.

We strongly advise that students do not arrive at school too early as instruction only begins at 8.40 am

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Access to the playgrounds

Please be advised that the school playgrounds are out of bounds before and after school, even if a parent is with the child.

We appreciate if you could cooperate with us and follow this request.

Assembly

In the last assembly for Term Three, 3N showcase their knowledge and understanding about celebrations in China, with particular focus on the food and traditions.

The first assembly this term will showcase the learning that has occurred in Prep C and Prep J.

Camps

In week nine last term, the Year Four students enjoyed a three a day camp at Alexandra Headland. The students participated in leadership and team activities as well as enjoying some beach games. (insert photos or link to photos)

As an introduction to the Camps Program at Aspley State School, the Year Three students will spend a one night sleepover in the Hall on Thursday 24 October. A volunteer note will be sent home next week to ask for assistance on Friday 25 October in the tuckshop to assemble the Meal Deal for the students.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Kidpreneur Market Day

Next Tuesday 15th October, all students will be invited to attend our Kidpreneur Market Day in the hall. Selected teams from all Year 5 and 6 classes have been attending this programme weekly for the last term.

This market day will showcase and celebrate the innovation capacity of our school’s young entrepreneurs. It has been successfully implemented in more than 600 schools across Australia.

The program involves students working in teams of three to:

  • build a business (marketing, brand identity and logos, financials, profit and loss, production operations)
  • develop a product.
  • sell at market day.
  • donate to a social cause of their own group’s choice.

We would love students to bring a small amount of money to spend at the market day stalls. Please see the images below for an idea of how much your child may like to spend and on what.

Please email ljoli0@eq.edu.au if you have any questions.

Thankyou for your support!

SCIENCE

Term three was busy with lots of investigating and gaining knowledge. Science week was celebrated and in collaboration with class teachers, various activities were carried out.

In our science lessons this term, the Yr. 1’s studied changes in landscapes over time. They observed changes in the school grounds; they constructed a landscape and looked at various materials and how they change over time. They also learnt about daily, weekly and seasonal changes. Students were exposed to various Australian nocturnal animals and discovered why they are nocturnal.

The Yr. 2 students studied how water gets to our homes. The looked at how water is used at home and at school and brainstormed ways of conserving water. Each Year two student carried out a water audit home and used this information to make deductions and draw conclusions. They learnt how water is vital in supporting life and were exposed to the water crises in developing countries. Many students were given the opportunity to ‘walk in the shoes’ of a less fortunate child, by carrying a bucket of water for the duration of a lunch break.

The space theme applied to years three and five this term. Year 3 students observed how the rotation of the earth gives us day and night. They carried out shadow investigations in groups during the school day. The relationship between the sun, moon and earth was studied. The Yr.5’s built on this knowledge and studied various claims about the planets and the way they move in our solar system. They built models and drew annotated diagrams to demonstrate their knowledge.

Year 4’s explored changes to the landscape over time, they focused on soil and rocks. They performed various hands-on activities and investigations. Models were used to demonstrate the effects weathering and erosion.

Topics covered in term 3:

Yr. 1 Up, down all around. Exploring changes to the landscape.

Yr. 2 Water Works. Investigation and observing how water gets to our homes.

Yr. 3 Day and Night. How the Earth moves in our solar system.

Yr. 4 Beneath our Feet. Exploring changes to the landscapes and studying rocks and soils.

Yr. 5 Spinning in Space. Our planet within our Solar System.

Ms. Alison Wakeford

BRAINways

Aspley State School hosted over 100 students from Northside schools as BRAINways administration conducted their two “Days of Excellence programs” We trust if your child attended, he/she found it was a valuable and unique learning experience where he/she got to interact with a range of new .people and learn new concepts.

Curriculum Term Overviews

This term teachers will be planning a transdisciplinary theme, “Who We Are”, for implementation in term 1 next year. This aligns to the International Baccalaureate framework for learning. Our whole school focus will be on understanding the attributes we value at Aspley State School. Students will be planning ways they can enact the Learner Profile attributes each and every day at Aspley State School. Our term 4 curriculum overviews will be published to our website at the end of this week. Please read through these to see the depth and breadth of the Australian curriculum that is taught this term. In a quest to reduce paper usage, we now publish the overviews on the website. If you have any difficulty accessing the overviews please let your class teacher know.

Community Coffee

Come along on 23rd October from 6-7pm in the school hall to understand the Learner Attributes that we value at Aspley State School. Tea and coffee provided. We’d love to see you there!

STUDENT ABSENCES

ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794

ID Attend help’s us to streamline absence notifications for students. We now have a mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.

Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:

Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s

This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.

The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.

We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

ROAD SAFETY

The following quote is a reminder to the community of the need to be vigilant about road safety and school students. Adults have a key role in teaching students to be safe when crossing busy roads. Daily peak hour traffic around Aspley State School can be difficult to navigate and there is only one designated crossing on the corner of Maundrell Terrace and Horn Road. For everybody’s safety, we ask that this crossing be used from Maundrell Terrace. When crossing Horn Road, students should be with an adult and using a safe section of the road.

“Children are our most vulnerable road users because of their unpredictability which can expose them to risk when around traffic. We know that children can be curious and keen to explore their surroundings. However their limited understanding of safety and tendency to focus on what is important to them can be dangerous. These factors coupled with their developing understanding of sound, distance and speed puts them at risk around traffic.”

All students in Years 2 and Years 3 have now completed the Selmer Test as a part of the Instrumental Music Recruiting process. The Selmer Test is a written test that indicates a student’s ability to discriminate between Pitch, Harmony, Melody and Rhythm in a segment of music. These tests will now be given to our Instrumental Music Teachers to help in the selection process for the 2020 Instrumental Music Program. Please see above the dates in the upcoming musical events section to take note of important dates that students will be involved in further testing with our instrumental music teachers Ms Jabs (Woodwind, Brass and Percussion) and Ms Jerram (Strings). Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.

We have recently had a number of books come back to the library in an unacceptable state; wet, mouldy or torn. One way to care for our library books is to keep them away from younger family members. Another way is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.

P&C NEWS

Holidays are over and the countdown is on – just EIGHT (8!) sleeps until our Community Markets and Outdoor Movie Night – this is the last major P&C activity for the year, so we hope you will help make it one to remember! Help is needed at both events – so if you can assist, please sign up at the link below.

https://signup.com/go/sDOYPMt

The Community Markets will bring over 30 stallholders to our school hall and surrounding undercover areas with something for everyone, young and old. Following that, we’ll be holding our ever-popular Outdoor Movie Night. Market entry is free, but we’d appreciate a gold-coin donation entry to the Movie Night to help us continue our fundraising towards the Shade Sail Projects. Outback Steakhouse, Jimbo’s Donuts, Wicked Treatz (Slushees & Fairy Floss), Coffee Royal, popcorn, lollies and drinks will all be available to purchase across the two events. Please support these businesses as they will be making a profit-share donation to support our fundraising!

Some stall holders will have EFTPOS but many of the families and the P&C stalls will be CASH ONLY so please ensure you bring some $$$ for a great afternoon and evening out! And remember your green bags!

Many details are on Facebook so find us @AspleySSPandC to stay in the loop!

TUCKSHOP NEWS

  • At the recent P&C’s QLD State Conference, our team of delegates returned with ideas on how we might support our Tuckshop – its menu, volunteering and general processes. The P&C operates the Tuckshop as a service to our school community and does this with two paid employees; however it requires many volunteers to ensure costs are kept low and earns a small surplus to cover the running costs. In term 4, we will be looking to make some changes, which might include the menu, costs, and way we do things leading into 2020. If you’d like to provide feedback to the P&C regarding the tuckshop, please email any ideas and suggestions to AspleyPC@gmail.com by October 25th.
  • VOLUNTEERS: one hour of time is a great help in our tuckshop – there are many little jobs that don’t take long including prepping snacks, flipping a batch of pikelets, baking muffins, preparing fruit salads, and labelling bags. If you can help for just one hour any day between Tuesday and Friday, please contact the Tuckshop on Tuckshop.AspleySS@gmail.com or just drop by.
  • Finally, welcome to Miss Kaye Russell, our Tuckshop Convenor. Kaye has had the chance to work with Jane, Natalie and our volunteers but will be finding her feet as she joins our community. Please give Kaye a smile and welcome when you see her in the Tuckshop.

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS

  • A reminder that Sports Shirt Hires for Term 4 Interschool sport have been distributed to students via their class. If you have any queries, please email Mrs Parke (Jodie) or see her during opening hours – Monday 8am to 9.45am and Thursday 3pm to 3.45pm.
  • The Uniform Shop Prices will be reviewed at the next P&C Meeting with a small increase likely across several items. The Uniform Shop has not increased its pricing in two years, and, with the increased manufacturing costs, a price review is necessary. The new price list will be effective 1st November 2019 and, once endorsed by the P&C Association, will be available on the school website.
  • VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN TERM 4 – Mondays 8am to 9am; and Thursdays 3pm to 4pm. If you can assist, please email Uniforms.AspleySS@gmail.com or drop in and see Jodie – she’d love your help! Again, our Uniform Shop does require volunteer assistance to ensure costs can be kept low – so if you can assist during opening hours, or in late January before school resumes, please contact us.

ASPLEY SWIMMING CLUB – Aspley Swimming Club will kick off their 2019-20 season on Sunday October 13 from 1pm.

  • Members who have registered their swimmers are invited to join the Aspley Swimming Club Members closed Facebook group. Please note, members who have not paid their dues, or non-members, are not accepted into this group. Important notices such as Race Meet cancellations, etc, are notified via email as well.
  • If you’re interested in seeing how our great swim club runs, or interested in your student having a trial swim, please email swimaspley@hotmail.com. Swim club runs Friday nights from 6pm through term 4 and term 1. For more info, see ASC’s website https://aspley.swimming.org.au
  • Big thanks to Jason B and Bevan V for their great work at re-furbishing the seating area at the deep end of the pool; and to Connor V for giving the cages a great tidy up! Now, if we can find someone willing to donate some cushions for our timekeepers’ tooshies….

LOLLY RUSH & SOFT DRINK DRIVE: If you can’t make our movie night, but would like to help us with our fundraising, please consider donating to our Lolly Rush and Soft Drink Drive. We will be selling these items at our P&C Sweets Stall. Donations are accepted Wednesday and Friday, from 8am to 9am, in front of the Tuckshop. We will tally each classes’ donation – with the winning class from each donation drive winning a morning tea, catered by the Tuckshop!

If you have questions or would like further info , please email pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au

TERRACYCLE UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who donated their oral care waste to our Terracycle Colgate Community Garden Competition. While we didn’t come in the top 3, we did make it into the Top 10; finishing in 9th place! An amazing effort and how wonderful to divert what would have been landfill to a place where it can be recycled and made into something new.

Our community have always been very supportive of our sustainability projects – we love leading by example for our children. We are now seeking two or three super-sustainability heroes to take over the opportunities we have to recycle within our community. This could include continuing the oral care waste recycling, enhancing our container refund scheme (cans and juice box recycling) or introducing some new projects. If you’d like to be a part of this working party, please contact the P&C – we’d love to hear from you.
