Morphology in Years 3–6 – Unlocking the Power of Words

This year, our school continues its whole-school focus on strengthening students’ literacy skills. While Prep to Year 2 classes are concentrating on language comprehension through shared and dialogic reading, students in Years 3 to 6 are diving into morphology—a research-backed approach to reading, spelling, and vocabulary development.

What is Morphology?

Morphology is the study of morphemes, the smallest units of meaning in a word. Morphemes include:

  • Base words (e.g., help, cred)
  • Prefixes (e.g., un-, re-)
  • Suffixes (e.g., -ful, -ed)

Some base words can stand alone (help), while others (cred) need to be combined with affixes to create meaningful words like credible or incredible.

Why Morphology Matters

Research shows that understanding how words are built makes students stronger readers and spellers. Morphology goes hand-in-hand with phonics, especially when phonics alone doesn’t fully explain English spelling.

For example, knowing that re- means “again” helps students understand and spell words like resend. Because English is influenced by both sound and meaning (it’s a morphophonemic language), morphology gives students the complete picture.

By understanding how words work, our students are not only becoming more capable readers and writers—they’re also becoming curious and confident explorers of language. We look forward to seeing their continued growth as they unlock the power of words through morphology.

Aspley SS Athletics Carnival Success!

Our annual two-day Athletics Carnival was a fantastic celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination. Students from Years 3 to 6 participated in a wide range of track and field events, cheered on by peers, staff, and families.

Across both days, students gave their best in events such as sprints, relays, long jump, high jump, and shot put. It was wonderful to see so many students stepping up to represent their houses with pride and enthusiasm. The cheering from the sidelines was just as spirited as the action on the field!

After two days of strong competition and great effort from all students, the final house results are in:

  • 1st Place – Mitchell
  • 2nd Place – Kennedy
  • 3rd Place – Oxley

Congratulations to Mitchell House for taking out first place, and well done to all students for their efforts, whether competing, supporting their team, or helping on the day.

We’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many families who were able to visit across the two days and cheer on our students. Your presence and encouragement mean so much to the children and create a wonderful atmosphere for everyone involved.

A special thank you to our P&C Association for their ongoing support and for organising the coffee van—very much appreciated by staff and families alike!

A big thank you to our staff for their organisation and supervision. We’re incredibly proud of the positive attitude and sportsmanship shown by all students. What a brilliant two days of athletics!
