Visitors to School

A reminder to parents or members of the public that if you are on the school site for any reason other than to drop off or pick up a student you are required to sign in at the school office. This is a workplace health and safety and school security matter. Thank you for your cooperation with this requirement.

2017 School Opinion Survey now open

Parents/caregivers, school staff and a random sample of students are encouraged to have their say in this year’s School Opinion Survey by providing their opinions about what our school does well and how our school can improve.

Access details for the parent/caregiver survey have been sent home with students, and parents/caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online. School computers can be made available if required.

The survey is open until Friday 25 August 2017. If you have not received your invitation letter or require for further information, contact the school office or visit the Education website.

Does your child require medication during school hours?

If your child requires medication while at school, please ensure you complete and sign an Administration of medication record sheet available from the school’s office.

You will also need to provide the school with the prescription-labelled medication in the original packaging with clear directions for its use. The school may request an accompanying doctor’s letter for certain medications.

For more information visit the Department of Education and Training website.

An Early Start for Prep to Year 2 literacy and numeracy

Early Start supports teachers to monitor and track students’ literacy and numeracy progress across the early years of schooling. Early Start tasks identify Prep to Year 2 students’ current skills and understandings in literacy and numeracy.

Students at Aspley State School are assessed:

  • on entry to Prep and at the end of year Prep,
  • at the end of year one and
  • the end of year 2.

The Early Start assessments get valuable literacy and numeracy data to inform teaching and link to the Literacy Continuum. Teachers can then determine what all students can do and what further learning should follow to support their progress.

Visit Early Start website for more information.

Raising global children

When should students start learning how to be a global citizen? Listen as the authors of the book Raising Global Children answer these questions and more. Read the 10 tips for raising global children poster .

Planning a trip to the Ekka?

Visiting animals at the Ekka is a great experience. Many animals carry germs that can make people sick. Animals, their saliva, excreta, bedding or feed are all potential sources of infection so always wash your hands immediately after visiting an animal contact area.

Useful resources including a general advice sheet and hand washing instructions can be found at the Queensland Health website.

Community Coffee Evening

Parents / carers, teachers and students are invited to attend an informative Community Coffee Evening on Wednesday 2 August 2017 at 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm. At this information night Open Eyes Social Media will give parents, children ranging from Year 3 – Year 6, and teachers a clear understanding of why they need to protect themselves and what tools are available to help create more secure accounts and use of these sites.

Please Select the below link to find out more information about the evening.

School Community Parking

The Brisbane City Council has advised that they have a commitment to pedestrian and child safety around schools. As you are aware, child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and schools alike.

Over the coming months the Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking. Parking fines may be issued in some cases where illegal parking occurs.

I ask that parents and community members and visitors to the school visit the Council’s website via the link below to learn more about parking.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

2017 School Opinion Surveys

Between 31 July 2017 and 25 August 2017, the Queensland Department of Education and Training School Opinion Surveys will be conducted within all Queensland state schools.

There are four surveys available for completion this year to identified groups of our school community:

  • a Parent/ Caregiver Survey (blue)
  • a Student Survey (green)
  • a Staff Survey, excluding the Principal (orange)
  • a Principal Survey, for completion only by the Principal of the school.

We encourage all eligible parents/ caregivers, students and staff to take this opportunity to have your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve. You can be assured that the information will be used for analysis purposes only. No names will be obtained, sought or stored with the responses and no data will be reported in ways that could allow for individual respondents to be identified.

The Parent/ Caregiver survey is to be distributed to all families of children attending this school, including Prep. Within the next week, the eldest child in each family will receive a blue on-line access letter. This letter enables a single-use log-in to the survey website address. For parent/ guardians of students that do not reside together, the letter will be provided to the parent/ guardian that is listed first in OneSchool. Note that each family can only complete one survey with all surveys to be completed from a non-school computer.

The Staff Survey is to be administered to all staff at the school (permanent, temporary and casual) at the school, excluding the Principal. Each staff member should receive an orange on-line access slip. Staff can complete the survey on any computer with internet access at school or at home.

Survey queries or requests for translations to assist parents/ caregivers to complete the survey can be directed to Mr Brendan Smith (Deputy Principal) on telephone 07 3863 9111 or email bbsmi0@eq.edu.au.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

Friday 4 August, 2017

Please see the attached information sheet regarding the data collection for this year. As with previous years, parents and carers can opt out of the process by contacting the school before the due date.

Meet our Staff

Donna Boaler - Deputy Principal (Acting)

Origins

I was born and raised right here in Aspley. Now I live on a few acres in a semi-rural community which I love for its peaceful environment and neighbourhood spirit.

Hobbies

I love to cook – I find it relaxing and creative. I also like to read, bush walk and grow food plants (I have a very large house garden and a fruit orchard)

Education Philosophy / Passion

I am adamant that each child has the same opportunity to realise their own potential for learning and life.

Amanda Troy – Business Manager (Acting)

Origins

I grew up in and around Geelong Victoria and am the youngest of 5 children. I moved to Brisbane in my late teens.

Hobbies

I enjoy eating breakfast out and do it any day that I can. I like to do puzzles, go sight-seeing and I enjoy the beach. I also like a good comedy and the occasional drama, but rarely a thriller.

Education Philosophy / Passion

I believe in taking a holistic view of what defines achievement. A child who feels safe and welcomed in their environment will do the best they can. Achieving goals in Education provides a child with the foundation on which they navigate through the rest of their life. A goal far more worthy than numbers on a balance sheet.

Year 5 Excursion – Kokoda

The students in Year 5 went on an engaging and enlightening excursion on Thursday 20 July. Below are 3 student’s accounts of their day out.

Kokoda

On Thursday the 20th of July, year 5 went on the Kokoda Challenge. Once we got there we met the instructors and they told us about Kokoda. We then split into our groups and started to walk up the Kokoda Hill. We where all really excited, but after a while I found it very exhausting. We had to go as fast as our slowest member because we weren't allowed to leave anyone behind. When we got half way, one of the instructors gave each group a rope. We all had to hold onto the rope as we continued to walk. We all had to work together to get up the hill. Some bits of the hill were very steep and some of us slipped a few times.

Once your group got to the top everyone was exhausted and relieved. We had to carry people on a stretcher to a picnic area before we could have morning tea, while the instructors told us what we where going to do next. We didn't get to do any activities because we had to go and make hamburgers for lunch. We had to be careful because kookaburras were in the trees around us and they swooped at some of the food. After lunch we gathered together and talked more about people's experiences on the Kokoda trail and the conditions they faced. Then we sadly had to leave. I really enjoyed the Kokoda Challenge and I think everyone else enjoyed it too. It was tiring, but fun. It was an experience that I will never forget.

Kokoda Challenge

On Thursday the 20th of July, the year 5 students attended the Kokoda Challenge at Mt Coo-tha. We did a lot of team building activities, which were very difficult but lots of fun. Upon arrival we went on a little walk to the Kokoda Hill; a hill that was very steep and high! We then had to all hold onto a life rope and climb the hill. Just when we thought we had finished we had to go do another loop of the hill. Finally we finished! The next activity was stretcher carrying. We had to walk approximately 2 kilometres while alternating carrying people on a stretcher made

of bamboo poles and a hessian sack. It was quite difficult but we managed to complete the stretcher challenge. Later we walked 500 metres to the next activity for the burger challenge. In this challenge we had to cook our own burgers on a BBQ and one group got to cook for the character builders staff and teachers. The final part of the day included a talk about what life was like for the soldiers who went to Papua New Guinea to fight the Japanese. Life on the Kokoda trail was really tough and many soldiers were captured and became prisoners of war (POW). We learnt about a man named Reg who was tortured because he wouldn't

give any information to the Japanese soldiers. Reg, who is still alive and lives in an aged-care home, had acid poured in his eye. He still remembers the faces of the soldiers who did this too him. It was then time to depart. We climbed aboard the bus and returned to Aspley state school tired but satisfied. For me, the Kokoda Challenge was one of the most memorable days of the year. I really enjoyed the experience.

Year 5 Kokoda challenge

On the 20th July. Most of year 5 went to the Kokoda challenge. We had to do lots of challenging things. The first challenge was to climb up Kokoda hill with our groups. We were given a rope to hold onto while we climbed the hill. Some of us slipped and but we had a small break before our next activity.

We had to make and carry people on stretchers. It was really difficult because we even carried the adults. Once we made it to the rest break we had some food then set of to the area were we would make lunch. We had really nice burgers that we made for lunch. Then we cleaned up and set of for home.

Premier’s Reading Challenge.

There is still a bit of time to participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge. Prep to Year 4 students are required to read 20 books to gain their certificate and Year 5 & 6 are required to read 15 titles.

Premier's Reading Challenge Dates:

15 May: Start Reading
25 August: Stop Reading
25 August: Return Student Forms to School for inclusion in Database and to receive a certificate from the Premier of Queensland
November: Certificates awarded to students

I would encourage you to have your child set their own goal to the requirement for achieving a certificate. The Library is challenging all classes to set and achieve their reading goal. Ask your child to write their goal on their sheet, on the banner at the top of the page.

Your students may read a wide range of books, and it is expected that competent readers will read books at their reading level. This is a challenge designed to enhance and improve students reading skills and rigour.

Suggested reading lists for each level are below. There will be a display from these lists in the library for students who wish to borrow.

http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/booklist.html

Book Week: 19 - 26 August 2017.

This Year the theme for book week is “Escape to Everywhere”. The Book Character Parade will be held at Assembly on Monday 21 August during Book Week. This is a great opportunity for students to have a bit of fun and dress to the theme. They have plenty of time to get creative and dress as the character they would like to ‘escape’ as. It would be great if students also carried the book from where they chose their character.

Library Team.

The library team had their first training session this week and are allocated the responsibility of a shelf. You will see their photo on the shelves. Remember to say “hello” and “thank-you” to these students who work in the library.

Aspley Woolworths

On Tuesday 30th May 2017 the school leaders accompanied Mrs Griffith-Baker to the opening ceremony of the new Woolworths store at the Aspley Hypermarket. Woolworths kindly donated a cheque for $1 000 to Aspley State School and our school leaders decided that our school will spend this donation to buy new books for the school library. Our books have now arrived and we invited Brendan from the Aspley store to the School on Thursday 27 July to say thank you! We appreciate the community support that Woolworths has shown Aspley State school.

EDUCATION QUEENSLAND SINGFEST 2017

The Aspley State School Senior and Boys Choral Members in Years 4 to Years 6 ONLY are invited to participate in the Education Queensland SingFest 2017. Senior and Boys Choralists have now received a parent information letter outlining the finer details of this exciting musical event. For a copy of this parent letter please refer to the Aspley school website.

SingFest is an annual massed choral music event for Education Queensland Primary School students. It features students from across the Metropolitan Region coming together to learn selected choral repertoire at school, then participate in a one-day workshop with a Guest Conductor, Mrs Justine Favell.

Mrs Justine Favell is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has pursued her interest in the specialized area of choral music. Justine is the Assistant Conductor for the Brisbane Chorale. Her association with these choirs has allowed her to work with many international conductors and watch many fine choirs whilst touring. Justine has been on the staff at the Queensland Conservatorium for many years and also works as the choral director at Hillbrook Anglican School, Ferny Hills Primary and Padua College. Justine Favell will be accompanied by Mrs Kylie Los, an incredible piano accompanist. Justine Favell will guide and inspire the children throughout the day to achieve their best at choral singing with a set repertoire, providing humour, enthusiasm and great fun, before presenting the choral works as a massed choir at a Twilight Concert.

Boys Choir members who choose to participate in Singfest will be required to attend Senior Choir rehearsals on a Wednesday 1.15pm – 2.00pm from Weeks 1 – Week 7 in Term Three to ensure they know the selected repertoire for this special performance. This repertoire will not be covered in Boys Choral rehearsals on a Tuesday morning. Thus, Boys participating in Singfest will have 2 rehearsals each week from weeks 1 – week 7 ONLY.

A reminder that participating students/parents are expected to return the Medical/Consent Form and the tear off slip below with the correct payment by Tuesday 15th August, 2017 to the school office.

The Senior and Boys Choral Ensembles have been working with Mrs McIntyre learning the repertoire in readiness for this exciting event. It is truly a wonderful opportunity for your child and Mrs Macca encourages everyone to participate in this memorable event.

EDUCATION QUEENSLAND – CREATIVE GENERATION

Luciella and Ian participated in the Education Queensland Creative Generation Performances which were held at the Brisbane Convention Centre from Thursday 13th July through to Saturday 15th July, participating in both day and night time performances. These two young students have collaboratively put together the story below regarding this exciting experience:

“Over Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the first week of school for Term Three, Ian and Luciella participated in Creative Generation State Schools Onstage. Creative Generations or CGen is a collective of state school students from across Queensland who join together to present a gala musical event. This year CGen included a 700 voice choir, 68-piece symphony orchestra, more than 700 dancers and 41 featured vocalists ranging in age from Kindergarten and prep to Year 12. Ian and Luciella were part of the massed choir. The 4 performances plus the dress rehearsal were held at the Brisbane Convention Centre. The Friday afternoon performance was attended by 50 students from our school.

The theme this year was ‘Share the Dream’. The performance focused on sharing the dreams of Queenslanders and those countries of the Commonwealth. There was particular focus on the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games that will be held in 2018 and particular using music to express the spirit of friendship and fair play unifying humanity, to promote equality and for people everywhere to realise their destiny.

The production featured 62 items and included well known music including the Theme from Rocky movie “Gonna Fly Now”, “Can’t Stop The Feelin” by Justin Timberlake, Theme from Superman and songs by Queen and Luciella’s favourite Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue which featured the pre-professional ballet dancers from the Queensland Ballet. The show also featured pyrotechnics and special effects and even included people flying high above the audience and the stage.

It was a great experience for Ian and Luciella to be involved in such a big production. We would like to thank Mrs Macca who assisted us rehearsing weekly and came to all the final rehearsals and performances at the Convention Centre and Mrs Griffith-Baker who supported Ian and Luciella to attend CGen 2017. It was a life changing experience and I highly encourage people who enjoy singing to do it next year”.

KINETIC KIDS

Looking for a fun program that will support the healthy development of your child's physical and mental health?

KineticKids classes start on Saturday 22nd of July in the Aspley State School hall.

Classes are led by a psychologist and exercise professional and include a combination of games and activities that will give your children valuable life skills.

We provide obstacle courses and activities designed to develop children’s perceptual motor skills. Your child will improve their balance, locomotor skills, coordination, body and spatial awareness. They will also develop fundamental movement skills including running, hopping, jumping, kicking, throwing and catching.

Your child will learn mindfulness skills using age-appropriate strategies. For example we teach calm breathing with beetle beanies, emotion regulation with mindfulness jars, and use bubble blowers to have fun practicing popping or blowing away worry bubbles.

We have received lots of positive feedback from families. For example:

“We had a lovely time this morning at the hall. Mark & Tamara are so well organised & have obviously put in a lot of time & effort to get this program running. The boys (and mummy & Granny) loved it. Thanks guys!” Elise Barton, April 21, 2017.

“This is a fantastic class for kids of all ages. Mark and Tamara are so lovely and so well organized. My son absolutely loves his KineticKids class. I highly recommend it!” Yvonne O Gorman, April 29, 2017.
