BOOST
This week I was delighted to spend time in the Preparatory classes where students were engaged in BOOST reading lessons. BOOST is a series of high impact lessons aimed to improve a specific aspect of learning for all students. BOOST is a school strategy where a team of staff work with the class teacher to teach children in small focus groups. Students work to achieve their learning goals.
I was delighted to celebrate the success of the Preparatory students and were proud of their reading and writing development. They are almost ready for year one!
BConnected
Last Wednesday evening, approximately 50 parents /carers, attended an information session where they learnt how iPads are used within the school to support student learning. The session detailed that in 2018, all students from years 4-6, are invited to bring a privately owned iPad to school to support their learning. Thank you to Mr Thomas, Head of Curriculum and Mrs Vener, Teacher who were key speakers at this event.
BConnected is the agreement where students / parents and the school agree to the terms and conditions of use of these devices at school. Students in these grades who do not have an iPad will continue to access school devices as they do currently, through the use of school computers and iPads.
A placemat of the required apps for 2018 will be provided to parents in the coming weeks. Please remember that once you have bought an app it can be used on multiple devices.
Early Years Playground Design
Currently, the school is working with a landscape architect to redesign the early years playground. Works have been completed to mitigate the significant water flow from this area through the construction of additional drainage. In the recent rains, we witnessed a significant difference in the effect of the new drainage on the early years playground site.
The existing early years playground equipment will be moved to Prep. This will make way for the construction of a new outdoor learning area and playground. The school and the Aspley State School P & C Association have committed funds toward this project. We eagerly await the completion of the design and scope of works.
Visitors to the School
All parents and visitors who attend the school, or volunteer at the school, are to report to the office and sign the visitor’s register. This is a workplace health and wellbeing requirement. Parents and visitors who volunteer at the tuckshop, are required to sign in the P & C Volunteers Register at the tuckshop.
If parents wish to have discussions with school staff please make an appointment. In order to give you their full consideration and attention, please make a mutually convenient time to meet. Teachers are often not available to talk before school or during class time as they are committed to their teaching duties for the day.
Everyday Counts
School absenteeism can impact significantly on students' learning and wellbeing.
Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.
Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on all school days unless there is a reasonable excuse. Schools monitor attendance of students and follow up with parents and caregivers any unexplained absences.
It is very important that all students attend schools each day. School breaks for the summer vacation on Friday 8th December 2017. Students resume for school on 22 January 2018.
If your child does not want to go to school, or is missing school without you knowing, please contact your school immediately for assistance and support. The school guidance officer is a useful contact to support parents.
Preparing Your Child for High School
The Department of Education has some useful information for parents / carers to support their child’s transition to high school.

Word Mania Winners
Year 3 attended a free robotics session at school, a wonderful prize for placing in the top 10 in the nation for the Word Mania competition.
Students learnt some basic coding during the session and all were mesmerised by the actions the robot could undertake once programmed, including walking and talking! The highlight though would have to have been the robot dancing gangnam style! We look forward to the Word Mania competition in 2018 and hopefully winning another prize as informative and entertaining as this!

P&C NEWS
P&C News 30 October 2017
Do you sometimes wonder why the school or P&C hold certain events and not others?
Would you like the school to support certain charities or days? Well, why not get involved?
One of the best ways to share your ideas is to be a volunteer. When you volunteer at Aspley State School, you’re meeting with a group of people who have an invested interest in improving the school so that our children can have a great school years experience. You have the opportunity to share your ideas with other parents, who can then support these ideas in communication between the school and the P&C. Being a volunteer for one event won’t sign you up for life. We won’t personally hound you or hassle you (well, we’ll try not to), in fact – we’d rather lots of people offer to help in little ways to spread the load. The more people who get involved, the more that can be achieved!
If you haven’t had the chance to volunteer this year, please consider helping us for one morning in the tuckshop or for one hour at the Election Day Sausage Sizzle. If you’d prefer to get your hands really dirty, there will also be a working bee soon. We’d love to meet new families and get to know you and what you’d like for the P&C to do in the future. And I promise we won’t ask you to become treasurer of the P&C next year.
TUCKSHOP VOLUNTEERING MADE EASY:
- Thank you to the community who have provided feedback regarding the current tuckshop operations. We have set up a new on-line system to make it easy for people to see when we need help. You can choose a date and time for ANY time for the rest of this term. The more volunteers we have, the more likely Jane will be able to expand the current menu to include treat foods and to plan special meal deals. SO… if you can help on even just ONE day, this will allow Jane to plan her day. Of course, if you still like to fill out a paper slip, please see the note below.

TUCKSHOP RE-BRAND:
- The tuckshop of today is not the tuckshop we know from our childhood. While for some families, tuckshop is still considered a once-in-a-while treat; for many others, they are life-savers for busy families and students are partaking in tuckshop meals more often. As such, we want to reflect this change and would love our community to think of a new name and maybe even design some artwork that we could use to “pep” up this area. Perhaps your class can work together and come up with a great theme!
- We have extended the deadline for submissions until Monday November 13th and look forward to seeing what the students come up with! You are welcome to submit your entry on the form provided by the school or contact us for a new one.
TUCKSHOP MENU:
- Sushi is now available Tuesdays and Wednesdays: Orders MUST be placed by midday Monday to be processed.
- The current menu has been streamlined so that toasted sandwiches are available first break, and other hot food is available second break. Sandwiches, salads and snacks are available at both breaks. Note, the hot food options change daily and rotate fortnightly, so it is worthwhile logging into Flexischools and checking out what may be coming up. New menu items include fried rice, fajita style chicken, pasta, and korma. Vegetarian options are also available.
UNIFORM SHOP NEW HOURS:
- NEW Open Hours for Term 4: Mondays 8-9.45am and Thursdays 3-3.45pm
- Are you able to help on Wednesday 29 November? Volunteers needed to help our new prep families.
