PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome Back
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new and existing students, and their families to Term 2. It is going to be a very busy term, but there are many exciting things for the students to look forward to.
The year 5 students have their camp next week and the athletics carnival for the students in Year 3-6 will be held in a few weeks’ time. The Book fair, Life Education and Naplan are also on this term.
The Year 1 students will have the opportunity to visit with some Firemen and discover how Fire trucks work. The Prep-2 students have Under 8’s day and their sports day later on this term. The music department have a busking competition, the Mayfair presentation, Band Blitz and the Music night.
Term 2 sees staff implementing the transdisciplinary unit they have planned during term 1. This unit is aligned to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Programme. All classes will work within the transdisciplinary theme of Where We are in Place and Time for approximately 6 weeks. The transdisciplinary themes of the PYP aim to contextualise the learning for students, establishing relevance and significance for the scope of the inquiry.
Facilities
We have nearly completed laying the artificial turf around the junior playground! The painting of the Prep building, the retaining walls and seating in the Year 1 eating area is also close to completion. If weather permits, we will see these improvements next week.
When you drive past the school at night, be sure to look at the tree near the junior playground. It is beautiful!
Year 6 Canberra Trip
The invoice for the 3rd deposit has been raised for the Year 6 Canberra Trip. The invoice is for $250 and payment is due on 10 May, 2019.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests will be held for all students in Australia in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 on Tuesday 14 May to Thursday 16 May 2019.
The NAPLAN tests are designed to assess the skills of Australian students in literacy and numeracy. The specific purposes are:
- to collect data from the population of Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for reporting to parents/carers and schools for systematic reporting
- to accommodate the assessment of students against national minimum standards.
A series of tests will assess areas of literacy and numeracy. The NAPLAN tests will provide all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 the opportunity to complete the following assessments:
Tuesday 14 May 2019 |
Language Conventions |
Year 3 and 5 - 45 minutes |
Writing |
Year 3 and 5 - 40 minutes |
|
Wednesday 15 May 2019 |
Reading |
Year 3 - 45 minutes |
Year 5 – 50 minutes |
||
Thursday 16 May 2019 |
Numeracy |
Year 3 - 45 minutes |
Year 5 – 50 minutes |
The following areas of literacy are assessed:
|
- spelling, grammar and punctuation |
|
- knowledge and control of written language |
|
- comprehension |
As in other years, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be required to respond to a stimulus in the NAPLAN Writing test.
In numeracy, the content areas assessed are:
- Number and algebra
- Measurement and geometry
- Statistics and probability
Results from the NAPLAN tests will provide important information about children's progress in literacy and numeracy. Following the tests, schools and students will receive a statement of performance in relation to the national minimum standards. The NAPLAN test results also guide teachers, to plan and provide future learning experiences to support student learning progression.
School Traffic Management Plan – Brisbane City Council
Brisbane City Council has supported our school to develop a tailored traffic management plan (TMP) to help ease traffic congestion and increase safety around our school and the local community.
Our TMP focuses on creating a more efficient pick-up and drop-off zone, increasing active travel opportunities and ensuring our school zone operates safely.
As a valued member of our community, we need your assistance to ensure safer school streets for our students and families. Please remember to always drive with care, observe time limits in the drop and go zone and only cross the road at signalised intersections, pedestrian refuges, school and zebra crossings or when safe and legal to do so.
To find out more visit the link below and search ‘school traffic management plans’.

Community Coffee Evening
Aspley State School will be holding a free seminar on Parenting Skills and Interventions on Wednesday evening, 29 May from 6pm – 7pm.
The presenter is Dr Jane Coleman, a registered psychologist, who works as an Implementation Consultant. Dr Coleman supports the implementation of Triple P in Australia, and is also a Triple P trainer. Her main interests include early intervention approaches for autism, child and adolescent anxiety and parenting interventions.
Please RSVP to admin@aspleyss.eq.edu.au by Friday 24 May
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS NEWS
Aspley Reading Club
Please see below the schedule for ARC this term. Due to Year 5 mentors away on camp, there will be No ARC next week. The children can continue reading online using the Sunshine Classics login they have access to.
Please note the following schedule for ARC in term 2.
Under 8’s day
A letter outlining the activities organised for under 8’s day will be sent home on Friday 26 April. This year, Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students will enjoy activities organised by their teachers in the morning session and then be involved in some fun, physical, team building, cardio fitness developing, and emotional awareness activities after the First Break.
Vision Screening for all Prep students
The State Government is offering a free prep-aged vision screening program to all primary schools in Queensland under the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program. This will involve registered nurses screening the vision of children in their first year of formal schooling.
Early identification of vision problems can result in better school achievement and health outcomes, which lead to more productive and healthier lives across the lifespan. There is no charge for the provision of this vision screening service. It is highly recommended that you take up this offer.
All Prep students should have received an envelope with paperwork for parents/caregivers to complete and return to the school by Friday 17 May to be eligible to benefit from this service.
Waiting Areas
Thank you to all the parents who are making sure that their child is in the right place at the right time before and after school. Parents waiting for their children after school are asked to wait outside the hall, as waiting around the areas outside the classroom can be very distracting for both teachers and students alike. Please lead by example.
Student Resource Scheme
The SRS or Student Resource Scheme offers the students access to a myriad of digital resources and the use of other resources in classrooms and other areas of learning. If you have not yet made your payment, please send the completed form (available on the school website) to the office.
Parents, please be aware that your child will lose access to all digital resources from Monday 6 May.
Self-managed individual
At Aspley, we teach the students to be self-managed individuals from the time they start in Prep. This is a very important skill for every child to acquire, as it will help them become independent learners.
Please teach your child to make a positive start for themselves by packing their own bag and lunch, being responsible for their belongings, handing notes in to you or the class teacher and remembering to return library books.
Open Day
There is an Open Day on Friday, 3 May at 9 am at the school hall. Anyone who has friends wanting to come to Aspley State School can attend this open day, where they get the opportunity to watch what we do at Aspley State School, go on a tour with the student leaders and visit classrooms.
2020 Prep Interviews
Families living in our catchment, who have identified that they have a child born between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015 will have an opportunity to book an enrolment interview on Friday 31 May. If you have a child born between these dates but have not contacted the office, please complete an enrolment booklet as soon as possible.
Easter Hat Parade
As always, the students from Prep to Year Two made us proud with their wonderful singing and ‘acting’ performances for the Easter Hat Parade, last term. Please see below for pictures of the event.

Items of value
It is quite evident that many students are wearing expensive watches and jewellery to school. Please be advised that the school takes no responsibility for lost items and we advise that they are not worn at school.
Drop off and Pick up
At the beginning of a new term, it is timely to remind the school community of the rules and responsibilities that ensure the safety of the students at the drop off and pick up zones. There are two zones for Aspley State School (Horn Road and Maundrell Terrace), the Brisbane City Council, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads provide the following information:
General parking rules
Brisbane City Council has general rules for parking in Brisbane. The parking rules include parking in the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) and on residential streets. Parking rules ensure all roads and footpaths are used safely by motorists and pedestrians.
Ensure you do not park:
- on footpaths or footpath ramps
- across driveways or footpaths
- in any area or space designated for emergency, essential services or disability parking (permitted vehicles are accepted).
Unless otherwise signed, the following rules apply at intersections and bus stops:
- park at least 10 metres from an intersection without traffic lights
- if there are traffic lights, park at least 20 metres away from the intersection
- park at least 20 metres behind a bus stop, or at least 10 metres in front.
https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/parking-brisbane/parking-rules/general-parking-rules
School zone parking and pick-up
School zones are areas around schools where, during certain times, reduced speed limits apply. Speed limits and drop-off, pick-up and parking rules exist to keep children, parents and carers safe and to minimise speed and traffic jams around schools.
You should always check parking signs carefully near schools, as they are often stricter than normal parking rules. The type of parking restriction, and the times that it applies, will be on the sign.
Signs and markings that you are likely to find near schools are:
- parking signs (for example, some streets near schools have 15 minute parking limits during school zone hours)
- no stopping signs
- yellow edge lines (stopping and parking is prohibited)
- no parking signs
- loading zone signs (used in pick-up or drop-off areas).
Drop-off and pick-up areas
Drop-off and pick-up areas, where you can quickly set down and pick up your children, are common outside schools (always on the school side of the road). They create a safe environment for children and keep traffic moving. Drop-off and pick-up areas are signed with passenger loading zone signs or two-minute parking signs. These signs mean you have a maximum of 2 minutes to drop off or collect your children.
How they work
There can often be queues at drop-off and pick-up areas outside schools.
When using a drop-off and pick-up area you:
- must use the area like a quick moving taxi rank
- need to move forward in the queue of vehicles to the signed area
- can get out of your vehicle to quickly help your children get in and out safely (once in the signed area) — however you must not walk away from your vehicle
- are only allowed 2 minutes in the signed area (if you take any longer you can be fined)—if your children are not ready to get straight into your vehicle at pick-up time, you will need to drive round the block and queue to enter the area again
- should only let your children out once you have pulled into the signed area (it is dangerous to let them out while waiting in a queue)
- should teach your children to look out for your vehicle and to get in quickly when you pull up
- must enter front in (never reverse).
A few drop-off and pick-up areas are supervised by a volunteer traffic coordinator who:
- can help your children get into or out of your vehicle
- will make sure you only stay in the area for 2 minutes (to avoid traffic build up).
If your drop-off and pick-up area has a traffic coordinator, you should stay in your vehicle at all times (they will help your children instead).
Advantages of drop-off and pick-up areas
Drop-off and pick-up areas help to make school zones safe because:
- children are dropped off and picked up close to the school’s entrance (so they do not need to cross any roads)
- they reduce traffic jams around the school (as parents and carers come and go faster than if they were to park and walk into the school grounds)
- younger (non-school aged) children can stay in vehicles while their older siblings are dropped off and picked up—they do not need to walk, or be pushed or carried, to the school’s entrance.

Lost property
In schools, student belongings can be misplaced or lost on a daily basis. These belongings are usually hats, lunchboxes and jumpers during the cooler months. At Aspley State School, lost or misplaced belongings are routinely gathered by students and staff and placed in the large lost property basket that is situated outside the uniform shop. At the end of each term, the lost property bin is emptied. Most of the articles are named and can be returned to the rightful owner. On occasion, the wrong belongings are taken home by mistake. We ask that all families regularly check these items for names to ensure that each student has their own belongings. If your student has accidentally brought home the wrong belonging, please return it the school as soon as possible.
Year Five Camp
A reminder to all students attending the Year Five camp to Kindilan, Redland Bay from Monday 29 April to Wednesday 1 May to be at the school at 6:30am on Monday morning. The buses will be departing the school at 7:00am. All medication, and associated documentation, is due to Mrs Boaler prior to boarding the bus.
ANZAC Day Assembly
The whole school community came together for a special assembly on Wednesday 24 April to honour the memory of all Australians who have fallen in battle. Each year homage is paid to the original ANZAC soldiers, and soldiers who have served in subsequent wars or conflicts to keep Australia safe for all generations. This year homage was paid to the role of women in the times of conflict, at home and abroad.
The assembly was attended by invited dignitaries and produced by the six of the school’s student leadership group, including the school captains.
A special thank you to the National Servicemen’s Memorial Pipes and Drums Band for their performances, and Mrs Lesina, Deputy President of Geebung-Zillimere RSL, for her speech on the role of women in the armed forces.
The school also extends thanks to Mr Bart Mellish (State Member), Mrs Tracy Davis for Mr Norm Wyndham (Councillor), Mrs Alice Long (P and C president), Duncan F (Bugler) and Mr Brett Chilcott (donation of uniforms for display).

Year 5 Boost
Do you know we are full of opinions on things? Writers choose their words to take a stance on issues and to persuade others that their ideas have merit. Here are a few lines from some year 5 writers during Boost.
Would you try Green Eggs and Ham?
My friend Mike asked me if I had tried the newest craze, “Green Eggs and Ham”. Curious about these green eggs and ham, I went into the store.
By Max (who sounds like he’s going to give them a go!)
Green eggs and ham? Seriously? Green Eggs and Ham? No! Plain and simple, easy to translate, NO. Just NO!....
I conclude affirmatively, this should not be consumed.
By Zack
Should uniforms be worn in schools?
People of Australia, our children’s ability to make a fashion statement, be creative and show self-confidence is disappearing thanks to uniforms.

A call for change
Are you a woman? If you are, than you are lucky to live in Australia. In some countries, women do not have rights at all. Can you believe that? In Victorian times, women could not vote. In some countries this is still happening. We have to forget the past and think about the future. Being treated as inferior to men is ruining women’s lives!
By Liesel
So in conclusion, women are strong and powerful. People need to fix the fact that women are still not allowed to vote in some countries, are not paid as much as men and are considered the weaker gender. Women! Get up and push forward towards equality.
By Tessa
We need to deal with women’s rights. Women are not for work around the house and do not deserve to be paid or treated as less than men in any way! This is a global problem and is extremely unfair.
By Grace
Climate change is the most popular topic of our time. This is because it is real! It is happening all over the world and the government is still ignoring it. There are many reasons for climate change, all of which we can put a stop to if we unite as a nation.
By Grace
For years, our unsung heroes haven’t been getting enough funding……
First of all, why are we not honouring our soldiers properly?
By Zack
Do you love fruits, vegetables, milk and meat? If you do then you must thank the hard-working farmers.

Easter ‘Buddies’
Last term 6D surprised their 1N buddies with ‘Farmer Mia’ delivering carrot bags full of goodies. Creative learning opportunities is a 6D specialty and their teacher is always so proud of what great role models they are.
S.T.E.M. Construction
Grade 6D students had a great deal of fun creating Ferris Wheels and bridges while learning about science, technology, engineering design and construction. It was truly wonderful to watch this incredibly awesome bunch of students support and encourage each other while actively engaging and inquiring as they worked.
6D’s Sponsored Pet Guide Dogs
6D continues to proudly sponsor the litter of Guide Dog puppies from Vision Australia. The puppies’ names are: Yoda (the “spokes dog for the pack”), Yentl, Yarrow and Yola (the girls), Yahto, Yogi, Yale and Yorky (the boys). Our latest letter from the pups informed us that they have begun their training and are growing every day.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.
Woolworths Earn and Learn
The Woolworths Earn and Learn program is on again, starting on May 1 and our school is participating. We have arranged for collection boxes to be at the Aspley Hypermarket and Chermside Market Place stores. Alternatively, you can bring your stickers or completed sticker sheets to school and place them either in the box in the school office or bring them to the library. Sticker sheets will be going home next week. We are planning to use the opportunity to purchase more mathematics equipment for students to use in our classrooms. The more stickers we collect, the more equipment we can buy.

TRIVIA QUESTION: In which Australian state is the Whispering Wall?
BE the first person to email AspleyPC@gmail.com and answer this question correctly to receive a prize!
The P&C are trying to do our sustainability bit by reducing the number of notes being sent home. We use the school newsletter, Facebook, and opt-in emails to keep you updated about P&C events and school activities. Each classroom also receives a copy of our flyers so please ask your children if they have seen the P&C note. Please contact us at pandc@aspleyss.eq.edu.au to reach all members of the executive; or aspleypc@gmail.com to reach Alice (President) directly.
