PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Music Night
Congratulations to the music and choral students who delighted the school community with their performances at the recent Semester One Music Evening. The quality of the performances was simply outstanding! I would like to thank Mrs McIntryre, Ms Jabs and Mr Pearson for their dedication, excellent tuition, and the precise feedback that they give to the students, which enables them to achieve a high quality performance.
Mrs McIntryre is seeking more boys to join the Boys Choir in Semester 2. Please advise your child to see Mrs McIntyre if they are interested to join in the choral fun.
A special thank you to Mrs Melissa Knight and Mrs Eileen Healy, our Friends of Music, for their dedicated assistance and organisation of the event. I wish to thank Morris Bros Music Store; Qld Youth Orchestra; Qld Symphony Orchestra; Qld Arts Theatre; Kylie Farrelly, Artist; Kids Music Beat; Brisbane Planetarium; and Harvest Rain, for their kind donation of raffle prizes. All funds raised on the night supports the music program.
School Sport and Recreation Facility Upgrade Program
This week we received notification from the Office of the Lord Mayor, Brisbane City Council that Aspley State School has been successful in a submission to the Brisbane City Council’s School Sport and Recreation Facility Upgrade Program 2018-19. The grant will fund $23 150 (GST exclusive) towards the replacement of the pool blanket, install a motorised roller and upgrade the pool lighting. This is indeed exciting news for our school community to receive this financial assistance to replace the facilities equipment at the Swimming programs at Aspley State School pool.
School Annual Report
Each year on the 30 June, state schools publish their School Annual Report, which details the key achievements of each school. The School Annual Report, 2018 is now available on the school website for the Aspley school community. Please take time to read about our school achievements in 2018.
In Memorium
Today, I take the opportunity to recognise the significant contribution of Ms Maureen Liddy, Speech Language Pathologist, who passed away on 15 June 2019. Ms Liddy’s life was celebrated today with family, friends and colleagues at her funeral. Ms Liddy dedicated her life dedicated to her profession and supporting young children to be able to successfully develop their language and communication skills. Ms Liddy has supported many children through their speech challenges and is fondly remembered for her warm caring nature, love of travel and the arts. Ms Liddy was highly regarded in the Metropolitan Region as an authority in speech language acquisition and therapy. Many children and families are ever grateful for her care and speech language therapy support.
The Aspley State School Foundation
As the end of the financial year draws to a close, I invite you to consider to give a tax deductible gift to the Aspley State School Foundation which is a not for profit organisation that supports the building and maintenance at Aspley State School. This year the Aspley State School Foundation is seeking to raise valuable funds to enable the instalation of shade sails over the new junior play area and the tiered seating near the oval. Please consider to give generously to the Aspley State School Foundation. See the website:
https://aspleyssfoundation.com.au/

Congratulations!
Congratulations on reaching reading targets at Aspley Reading Club.
Instrumental Music Teachers
The following information was sent home to parents of students in the Instrumental Music programme to explain the Semester One report cards:
Queensland State School Instrumental Teachers (through the Queensland Teachers’ Union) are currently negotiating with the Queensland Department of Education regarding the review and/or renegotiation of a current Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). This is an industrial agreement that outlines and clarifies professional work requirements and conditions.
The current Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) is over a decade old. During this period of time, there has been significant changes to the work of Instrumental Music Teachers including work intensification, hours of work and the introduction of a new curriculum requiring new ways of teaching, new assessment, moderation and reporting practices.
Although industrial discussions have been underway for some time, a negotiated agreement is yet to be achieved. From November 2018, the Queensland Teachers’ Union consulted Instrumental Music Teacher members then issued a directive requiring them to ‘work to’ the current Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). Given the age of this agreement, various more recent educational initiatives and practices are not included.
Instrumental Music Teachers (and Instructors) will not be providing A – E reporting to students in Semester1, 2019. An Instrumental Music report will not be included with the Student Progress Report issued at the end of the semester. Students will receive feedback on their assessment as well as a copy of their Instrumental Music Assessment Task Sheet. Should more clarified student progress be sought, a parent may speak with their child’s Instrumental Music Teacher as they have done so during the semester or by making contact through the School Administration. Acknowledgement of student participation in ensembles and within the Instrumental Music Immersion Programme will continue to appear in the extra-curricular section at the bottom of the Student Summative Report Card for Semester1, 2019.
Aspley State School is proud to support the Instrumental Music Teachers in their efforts for an updated industrial award. The brilliant opportunities the teachers provide Aspley State School students is second-to-none.
Please contact the school if you have any queries.
Assembly – Class Show Case
2K were the Show Case Stars on assembly, highlighting an investigation into sustainability and the environment. They challenged us to be more disciplined with recycling, reusing and caring for our environment at school.
2/1T demonstrated how to be mindful when interacting with others and how to be mindful for ourselves. They gave us some very interesting ideas.
Year Six Canberra trip
A reminder for parents of students attending this year’s Canberra trip of the final parent information session. This information session will be held in the school on Wednesday 26 June from 6:00 – 6:45pm Topics for discussion on this night include the itinerary, spending money procedures, medication procedures and communication.
School start times
We would like to remind parents and caregivers that lessons begin at 8.45am in the morning at Aspley State School. Please make every effort to ensure that students are here on time as consistent late arrivals impact on students accessing instructions for learning and valuable learning.
CURRICULUM NEWS
Outdoor Learning
Teachers and students have been taking advantage of our beautiful winter mornings and utilising the outdoor learning spaces around the school.
This group of students is discussing a text read. Warms the heart on many levels!

Inquiry Learning
It has been encouraging to see our students developing skills for inquiry and research. The natural curiosity students have is nurtured through the International Baccalaureate's (IB) Primary Years Programme's (PYP) framework. As a candidate IB school, we are exploring the Learner Attributes recognised by IB as necessary to develop internationally-minded people who help to create a better and more peaceful world. When a learner is curious, questions are generated. All students have been generating 'wonderings' that link to the units of work planned using the PYP framework. These wonderings are linked to important 'big ideas'. One of our year 2 students posed a wondering, " Which is more important, the environment or reading?" after investigating a unit of work based around environmental issues. His explanation of why both are vital showed a critical analysis of the knowledge he had available to him. Teachers are thoughtfully crafting the term 3 unit of work to be implemented around the transdisciplinary theme of 'How We Express Ourselves'. The Curriculum Overviews that are published early next term for each year level, highlight the intended learning as linked to the Australian Curriculum. Please have a read through this document to see how you may assist your child's learning.
Term 2 Science
This was a very exciting journey of discovery for all the year levels. Please see below for the topics covered in each cohort.
Year 1: Schoolyard Safari
Year 2: Push and Pull
Year 3: Heat it Up
Year 4: Material World
Year 5: What’s the Matter?

Year 1
The students in Year 1 had a visit from Queensland Emergency Services on the 6 June and 13 June 2019. They learnt about fire safety and also learnt that when a firefighter enters your house in their suit, they aren’t scary. The Year 1 students were given a task. They were asked to check with their parents if they have fire alarms and an evacuation plan. They also got to see the fire truck and had a go at using the hose. It was a great experience!

Saudi Arabian Educators Visit
On Wednesday 19 June, Aspley State School hosted a group of 22 experienced teachers from Saudi Arabia. The teachers have been sponsored by their Ministry of Education to participate in a year long training program in Queensland. Many of the teachers have brought their own families to Australia for this experience and we learnt that some also have their own children attending Queensland State Schools. In partnership with University of Queensland and Education Queensland International the teachers visited a number of classes at Aspley State School to gain practical knowledge in how teaching and learning is delivered in Queensland. Teachers and students welcomed the teachers into their classrooms and shared their learning.
6D wrote and presented a letter to the teachers visiting their classroom.
Dear Ahmad, Abdulaziz and Muyidi,
G’day!
In 6D, we LOVE having visitors so we thought that it was fabulous to have you spend some time in our awesome classroom.
We hope you enjoyed watching us learn and collaborate. We are so curious about what school is like where you come from that we are going to do a class inquiry into it and compare education in Australia to education in Saudi Arabia.
We also hope that you enjoyed our speeches during our ‘6D Has Mouths’ segment.
Australia is a beautiful place and if you get the chance, we recommend visiting as much of our fabulous state (Queensland) as you can. Some of our favourite places are the beaches at the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, Hamilton Island and the home of the NRL ‘Cowboys,’ Townsville (they are a football team).
Have a safe trip home and please visit again soon!
From Trina Mann-Darlington and 6D
Explanation of classroom practice:
We love visitors and engaging with our community so much that earlier this term, we Face-Timed Australian architect, Michael Lavery, so that we could learn about how architects contribute to Australian society in meaningful ways.
To take action on our learning, our multi-media biographies were displayed so that people in our community had the opportunity to learn about the contributions that Australians have made to Australian society.
In 6D, we create a visual display of our inquiry-based learning journey
In 6D, we have learning walls to scaffold our learning and to help us self-manage.
Digital Resources
Our Student Resource Scheme is a great way to ensure your child has easy access to learning materials. Keeping home reading going over next week and through the holidays is easy using digital programs such as Sunshine Online and the e-book library. Literacy Planet also have a library of texts and offer Word Mania, a fun word building game that assists spelling and vocabulary development. Don’t forget to use Mathletics and IXL for great maths consolidation! Happy learning!
FINANCE NEWS
Excursion Deadlines
Last week we had an unfortunate situation of students not being able to attend excursions due to failure to provide permission slips and/or finance by the due date. On each excursion form there is a published due date. This is also published in our school newsletter. This is the date where the excursions are closed and venue and buses organised. Our system integrates the processes of excursion planners, risk assessments, permission letters, invoice statements and finance payments. Once the due date is reached, it is not possible to re-open to account for late payments. We choose the due date to allow families the maximum time to complete forms and make payment. There is no provision to accept late payments unless prior consultation and a payment plan has been entered into before the due date has passed.
The due date is necessary so we can ensure our obligations are met. Students need to be registered on OneSchool for legal purposes before they can leave the school grounds. Families cannot indemnify the school of their legal obligations because they forgot to submit a form and/or make a payment by a due date.
Due dates must be adhered to. We would like to avoid having disappointed students missing opportunities. We encourage families to meet consent and payment deadlines so every child can enjoy the amazing opportunities on offer.
From Term 3 2019, if a consent form and/or payment is not received by the due date, affected students will be unable to participate in the excursion/incursion.
Payment Methods
Aspley State School has reviewed the process of receiving payments from students and their families at the school.
I ask, where possible, that parents / carers use QParents or BPoint to make payments. These two methods can accept payment using your credit card. The security and safety of your financial data is paramount. These methods are widely accepted as the most secure methods of payment.
The school will also accept direct transfers into the Aspley State School bank account, or a cash deposit at any branch of the Commonwealth Bank. Please ensure you use your Childs name as a reference so we can easily identify who the payment is for.
Aspley State School Bank Details are: BSB: 064-151 Account Number: 0090 1234 Account Name: 0610 Aspley SS GA
Please use your child’s name as a reference and pay be the due date identified on the permission note. Payment MUST be paid by the due date.
By paying through Q Parents, B Point, Electronic Bank deposit or Cash at Bank deposit you will assist the school to:
- Reduce the amount of cash students / parents carry to school;
- Minimise cash or cheques kept on the premises and reduce the risk of theft;
- People will receive a receipt for the payment at the time of payment;
- Reduce the risk of a student losing money or cheques;
- Reduce the administration time of processing of payments;
- Remove the responsibility for children to be responsible for amounts of cash;
- Keep your financial details private and safe;
- Follows the Dept of Education Qld guidelines for cash collection and cash storage.
From Term 3 2019, Aspley State School will only accept cash payments between the hours of 9.30am and 10.30am on Tuesday and Thursday at the administration office. Credit Card over the counter transactions will also be accepted during this time. Payment envelopes will not be required for these transactions. By paying during these times you will be provided an immediate receipt. Please note in term 3 the office drop boxes will only be used for returning permission forms. No Cash will be accepted through the office drop boxes.
STUDENT ABSENCES
ABSENCE TEXT MESSAGE MOBILE NUMBER – 0427 286 794
ID Attend help’s us to streamline absence notifications for students. We now have a mobile number that parents can send a text message to, so we are notified of upcoming absences.
Please put this number into your mobile phone as “Aspley SS ID Attend Absences” and send the school a text message for any absences (including future absences) with the following information:
Name of student
Class
Reason for absence (for example… sick, family reasons or holiday, etc)
Date of absence/s
This new text messaging line is the preferred method to notify the school of student absences.
The existing school absence line, email absence address and Q Parents are still functioning.
We appreciate your help with this matter to ensure all students are attending school and safe.

LIBRARY
Woolworths Earn and Learn
The Woolworths Earn and Learn program is scheduled to finish next Tuesday, 26 June. Thank you to the many families who have brought in their stickers. Please keep them coming as we are planning to use the opportunity to purchase more mathematics equipment for students to use in our classrooms. The more stickers we collect, the more equipment we can buy.
Boxes for you to bring either your stickers or your completed sheets are available in both the school office and library. We also have collection boxes at our two closest Woolworths stores; Aspley Hypermarket and Chermside Marketplace centres. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Hamilton in the library.
Last Day for Borrowing This Term
As the end of Term Two approaches, we remind parents that all books need to be returned to the library by Wednesday 26 June. Today was the last day for borrowing for the term and overdue and current loan notices will be given to teachers on Monday. Please assist your child in locating any overdue or missing books so that they are able to borrow their full allocation of books next term. If you are unsure if your child has any overdue books, please email the library staff on library@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
Brisbane City Council School Holiday Activities
As there is no borrowing from the school library over the school holiday period, we would encourage students to continue to read through the access to DET online books, home collection or visiting the Brisbane City Council libraries for borrowing. The link to find your nearest BCC Library is
https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/things-to-do-brisbane/council-venues/libraries/library-locations
The Brisbane City Council also has a range of activities available over the school holidays. The link is below.

Caring For Our Books By Always Using a Waterproof Library Bag.
One of the easiest ways we can care for our library books is to always have a waterproof library bag when borrowing and returning our library books. Your support in ensuring that your child uses a waterproof library bag rather than a calico/cotton bag, plastic shopping bag or a plastic folder, is appreciated. Books and resources will not be borrowed to students unless they have a waterproof library bag with them at the time of borrowing. The Uniform Shop sells the recommended library bag (green) for $15.00.
Student and Class Borrowing
Students who have their waterproof library bag, and are not on Restricted Borrowing due to overdue library books, are welcome to borrow from the library before school from 8am, during play at second break and after school until 3:15pm. The timetable for classes, who are scheduled to come to the library, is included below for your information.

P&C NEWS
As we come to the end of another term, I’d like to say a big thank you to our community for supporting the activities of the P&C this term. It was a super busy term with the Mother’s Day Stall, Year 3 to 6 Sports Day Sausage Sizzle and Bake Stall, Election Day Sausage Sizzle and Bake Stall, Trivia Night, Music Night support and Raffle, and next week’s P-2 Sports Day Sausage Sizzle and Bake Stall.
And that’s not all – we continue to collect oral care waste for the TerraCycle Garden Challenge (continuing until September), as well as support the Prep Tote Bag Fundraiser, the Aspley Foundation Annual Appeal (more details below), conduct a Working Bee, and continue organising the Term 3 School Disco and Father’s Day stall, and the Term 4 Community Pop Up Garage Sale and Movie Night.
The P&C is also sending 3 delegates to the annual P&C’s Qld Conference being held at the Sofitel Brisbane on September 6 and 7. If you have ever wondered about the value of P&C’s in schools and what we can contribute, and would like to be a part of the bigger picture, then please contact me – I’d love to share this experience with you.
Aspley Foundation Annual Appeal
The Aspley State School Foundation is an initiative of members of the Aspley State School P&C. It was established in June 2018 to create a reliable income stream to be used for the maintenance, improvement and construction of buildings at our school. Last year, the Foundation, through the generosity of our community, was able to replace the carpets in the 5 Prep classrooms and install blinds in Year 6 classrooms.
This year, we would love to see the building of shade over the new Maundrell Tce playground and the grandstand over the main oval. The Appeal hopes to raise $20,000, which will allow the School to release the equivalent monies to support the project. At the time of writing this, our generous community had already contributed $2000 to the Appeal. We know that $20,000 will not be enough to cover the actual costs of both builds, but I am keenly aware that this has been on the wish list of the parent body for a while now and the P&C will support these two projects wholeheartedly to provide additional funds (check out the P&C meeting Wrap Up further down to see just how much we’d like to contribute to start with!). The P&C has already contributed nearly $70,000 towards the new playground area over the past 3 years, and we cannot wait to see it covered to ensure all children have a sun-safe place to play for many years to come. The covering of the oval grandstand will ensure children and spectators can be sun-safe, and provide another option for outdoor learning.
Just $50 from each family will help the Annual Appeal reach its target. Any donation over $2 is tax deductible. We hope that all families will consider making a tax-deductible contribution before June 30 so that we can see this project come to fruition before the Summer begins. Please give now at:

GO GREEN DAY – Friday 28 June 2019
The P&C are proud to support the school’s gardening programs and sustainability initiatives. To help continue this support, students are invited to wear anything green or floral on the last day of term, Friday 28 June, and donate a gold coin towards these projects.
WORKING BEE – Sunday 30th June, Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd July (School holidays)
The Year 6 students are busy writing a list and checking it twice for a few small (and biggish) jobs that we’d like to achieve over the holidays. We invite families to come along and help get the Sensory Garden underway and spruce up the Sports Shed. Just a few hours on Sunday 30th June; or Monday and Tuesday 1st and 2nd of July would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to help, please email PandC.AspleySS@gmail.com and we’ll give you further details. Otherwise keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more info!

- We are still missing several reusable pots. If they have ended up at home, please send them back (clean is preferred!).
DID YOU KNOW? The majority of items served in our Tuckshop are made from scratch? We are proud of our Aspley menu. If you’d like to give feedback or would like to see how food is prepared, please join us for a morning of volunteering. We welcome new helpers and you never know, you might learn how to perfect your pikelets or find out Jane’s secret YUM cake recipe!

CONGRATULATIONS – to past Aspley SS P&C President Tony Lee
A special shout out to Mr Tony Lee, for recently being recognised in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Tony received a Medal of the Order (OAM) for his contribution to youth through his work with the Australian Air Force Cadets. Tony was president of the Aspley SS P&C Association from 2008 to 2013 (our longest serving President I think!) and contributed greatly to the success of the P&C and the school. If you look up as you walk down to the classrooms, down the path by the pool, you will see the walkway is actually named in his honour – Tony Lee Way. So, on behalf of Aspley SS P&C – Congratulations Tony – you continually volunteer your time to the community, and we acknowledge and thank you for your valuable contribution!
