Term 3 – Learning, Celebrations and Connection
It’s been a vibrant and energising four weeks, with students and staff diving into learning. It feels almost surreal to think we’re already approaching Week 5, a milestone that brings both a short break and a week filled with celebration.
As we look ahead, here are some key reminders and highlights for Week 5:
- School Closure
- EKKA public holiday Wednesday 13 August 2025. A reminder to families that school will be closed for the scheduled holiday.
- Bullying No Way! Week – National Week of Action
- Commencing Monday, 11 August, this national initiative reinforces our school’s commitment to proactive strategies that value learning, respect and inclusion.
- Students are invited to wear purple, the new campaign colour, to show their support. Items such as socks, hats, jumpers, t-shirts, shorts and hair ribbons may be worn with the school uniform, provided they are sun-safe and appropriate for school routines.
- We’ll be promoting this year’s theme: Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.
- Book Week Assembly – Friday, 15 August:
- A beloved tradition, our Book Week Assembly invites students , staff and parents to dress up as their favourite book characters and celebrate the joy of reading. We look forward to seeing the creativity and spirit that make this event so special.
We extend a heartfelt thanks to our community and staff, especially those who supported the Canberra Trip, Year 4 Camp and helped navigate the disruptions to our regular program in Week 4. Your continued partnership ensures that our school remains a place of learning, celebration and connection.
Acknowledging 135 Years of Learning , Celebrations and Community
On Wednesday 6 August, we marked our school’s 135th birthday, a milestone that reflects generations of learning, growth and community spirit. While the stop work action on the day meant our full school and student celebrations were postponed, our pride in this achievement remains strong.
Stay tuned as we continue to honour this special occasion throughout the term. Exciting details and events are on the way!
Study Tour Update
Our upcoming study tour with sixteen students and two teachers from Ritsumeikan UJI Junior High School in Japan will be arriving on 23 August 2025. They will be attending our school from 25 August and departing on the 5 September. This exciting cultural exchange will provide our school community with a unique opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and strengthen our international connections.
During their stay, the Japanese students will be billeted to local host families, where they will be involved in the Australian way of life to practice their English in a real-world environment. At Aspley State School, they will take part in a range of activities and English lessons to improve their language skills. This also gives them the opportunity to experience the routines of an Australian classroom, while learning various subject areas. Our Grade 5 and 6 “Aspley Buddies” will have the opportunity to engage with the Japanese students and gain a greater appreciation for Japanese culture. This exchange promises to be a valuable experience for all involved.
As the arrival date draws closer, we are eagerly anticipating the students' visit and look forward to a memorable and enriching exchange. Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to welcome our guests from Japan!
We extend our thanks to Ms Mina and Mrs Wakeford for their dedication, planning and preparations for the upcoming study tour and look forward to celebrating this milestone with them.
2025 School Opinion Survey (SOS)
The 2025 School Opinion Surveys were emailed in the week beginning 21 July and is titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey.
The survey is anonymous, and the results are not reported in ways that an individual’s response can be identified by the school. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey.
Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au .
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Planning and Preparations for 2026
There will be many operational matters to address as we prepare for 2026. Yes, it’s time to start the conversation.
2026 Enrolments and Classroom Configurations

Swimming
At Aspley State School, we recognise that learning to swim is more than just a school activity — it’s a vital life skill, especially in a country like Australia where water is such a big part of our lifestyle. Our Term 4 swimming program is designed to build students’ confidence, technique, and awareness around water and beach safety.
We are once again partnering with Swim Solutions, whose qualified instructors bring expertise and encouragement to every lesson. Whether your child is just starting out or already swimming competitively, school-based swimming offers valuable opportunities to grow and refine their abilities.
In Term 4, students in Prep and Years 3–6 will take part in weekly swimming lessons across seven weeks. The program wraps up with two exciting events: the Prep Fun Swim and the much-anticipated Swimming Carnival for Years 3–6.
To support sun safety and comfort in the water, students will need to bring a rashie, swim cap, sunscreen, and appropriate swimwear each week. More detailed information, including costs and class schedules, will be shared towards the end of Term 3.
We’re looking forward to another great season in the pool!
School Uniform
At Aspley State School, students wear their uniform with pride. Our school uniform fosters a strong sense of belonging and community. Both the formal and sports uniforms are thoughtfully designed to ensure comfort, practicality, and sun safety. Our uniform dress code can be found on our school website.
Wearing the uniform is a requirement of enrolment. Students may choose to wear either the formal or sports uniform each day, based on their scheduled activities. However, the formal uniform is required for special occasions such as assemblies, school photos, excursions, and other significant events.

A sentence for every occasion
The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life. Skills in the Foundation Year curriculum include using simple sentences.
It’s easy to help your child practise this skill as part of everyday life – just use these simple ideas.
Play with sentences:
Sentence-building games can be great fun, while helping your child develop their skills. Here’s a version for two people:
- choose a starting sentence – eg something your child said; a sentence you just read; or something simple such as Yesterday I went to the park
- ask your child to think of a new word or phrase – eg ice cream
- find a way to add that word to the sentence – eg Yesterday I went to the park and ate an ice cream.
- now swap: you think of a new word (eg slide), and challenge your child to add it to the sentence (Yesterday I went to the park, played on the slide and ate an ice cream.)
Sentences have to make sense, but they don't have to be sensible. For example, Yesterday I went to the park and played on the ice cream slide makes perfect sense, even though it's silly (and hilarious)!
Keep taking turns until you can’t add any new words, or the sentence gets too long to remember. The longer you make the sentences, the more challenging it becomes (and the more your child develops their memory skills).
Go online:
For online reinforcement, Prehistoric sentence builder and Ocean sentence builder will give your child practice at creating sentences.

Bullying No Way! Important conversations to have with your child
Aspley State School is proud to participate in the Bullying No Way: National week of action – 11 to 15 August 2025.
By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying.
Families play an important role in helping children understand bullying and know how to respond to it.
If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Questions you could ask:
- What do you think bullying is?
- Have you seen it? How did you feel?
- Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
- As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
- Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
- Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?
Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.
Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.
By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.
For more information visit bullyingnoway.gov.au.

Understanding Your Child’s NAPLAN Report
This week Aspley State School distributed the Individual Student NAPLAN Reports to the Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN students.
Your child’s NAPLAN report will provide helpful insights into their progress in key areas of learning: numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar and punctuation.
Each section of the report includes a proficiency scale, with your child’s individual result marked by a black dot. You’ll also see:
- A black triangle, which shows the national average for students in the same year level.
- A light shaded rectangle, representing the range of results for the middle 60% of students across Australia.
The proficiency standards on the report include 4 proficiency levels:
- Exceeding: The student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: The student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: The student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: The student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
Page 4 of the individual student report provides a more detailed summary about what students know and can do within each of the proficiency levels.
While NAPLAN offers a useful snapshot of your child’s learning, it's important to remember that it reflects their performance on one day, not their overall ability or growth across the year.
We encourage you to view the results as just one piece of the puzzle, and to speak with your child’s teacher if you’d like to explore their learning progress in more detail.
A video on how to read and understand your child’s report can be seen here.
Can I Compare My Child’s NAPLAN Results Over Time?
Results from 2023 onwards use a new measurement scale and were based on tests conducted in Term 1, rather than Term 2 as in previous years. Because of these changes, NAPLAN results from 2023 and beyond cannot be directly compared with results from 2008 to 2022.
However, starting in 2025, students in Years 5, 7, and 9 completed their second cycle of NAPLAN under this updated system. This means parents and carers can now compare their child’s individual reports from 2023 and 2025 to see how their proficiency levels have changed.
You can also compare how your child’s results relate to the national average and the middle 60% of students between these years.
It’s important to keep in mind that as students move up through the year levels, the skills needed to reach each proficiency level become more advanced. So, if your child achieves the same proficiency level in, for example, Year 3 and Year 5, this still shows positive growth and progress.
Classroom News
Prep B
This term Prep B have been scientists, using our senses to investigate weather features and activities. We have been identifying distinguishable features to sunny, rainy, cloudy and stormy weather, using creative strategies to consolidate our learning, e.g. making a kite, wind socks, artwork of changes in the sky. In English, we have continued exploring traditional tales, sequencing events and creating puppets to retell the story. Keep up the great job, Prep B!
1B
In Science and HASS, 1B has been busy being curious explorers of the world around us! We’ve been making observations and investigating the differences between the day and night skies and learning about the natural, managed, and constructed features that make up different landscapes. We discovered that these features can change the kinds of activities we can do in each place.
2B
In year 2, we love our science unit this term! Students are provided the chance to explore growth cycles of living things. So far, students have looked at the bean plant life cycle and cicada life cycle. In our 2B classroom we have also planted some bean seeds and are observing and recording their growth over 8 weeks. In mathematics, students have been learning about 2D shapes, fractions and using informal units to measure length, mass and capacity. Students in 2B created 2D shape monsters and are having fun splitting shapes into halves, quarters, and eighths.
3B
This term, students in 3B are becoming persuasive writers and speakers, sharing their opinions with confidence and flair. In maths, we're solving real-world problems using fractions, multiplication and division, and getting hands-on with measuring everyday objects. Science has us chasing shadows and exploring how Earth’s movement creates day, night and changing sunlight. We’re building curiosity, creativity and confidence across all learning areas. It’s a fun-filled term of thinking, talking, and discovering!
5B
Now you see it: Exploring the transfer of light
Students of 5B have been learning all about light this term. Their introduction to the unit involved differentiating between natural and artificial sources of light. Through discussion and observation, they learned that natural light comes from sources like the Sun, while artificial light is produced by man-made objects such as lamps, flashlights and streetlights etc. During our practical investigations, students examined how light interacted with transparent, translucent and opaque materials. They observed the different effects the materials had on the light. Building on this knowledge, students made Scientific predictions about how light travelled by using a torch and shining it through multiple cut out windows. This engaging activity helped the students understand that light travels in a straight line. It is wonderful to see the students being enthusiastically involved and excited about the next stages of our light exploration journey!

Students were introduced to the first key concept known as the Golden Rule – Treat others as you would like them to treat you. They brainstormed what this would look like in their classroom.
We then launched into our first game, Piccadilly Circus, a frantic, noisy game requiring good communication skills.

Book Week
Aspley State School Book Week Assembly is Week 5, Friday 15 August.
Each year, Book Week is celebrated across Australia to foster a love of reading and storytelling in children. Established in 1945 by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), Book Week is a uniquely Australian tradition. Its purpose is to highlight quality Australian children's literature and promote the importance of books and literacy in young lives.
The 2025 Book Week theme is "Book an Adventure!", inviting students to explore new worlds and ideas through books. As part of the celebrations, the CBCA announces its Book of the Year Awards, spotlighting outstanding Australian authors and illustrators. This year’s shortlisted and winning books include a vibrant mix of picture books, early reader stories, and thought-provoking novels for older students.
Keep an eye out in the L&IC for displays of the 2025 CBCA Book of the Year titles —perfect for sparking imagination and conversations in every year level
It’s time to think of your favourite book and what character you will pick to wear.

ASPLEY MUSIC DEPARTMENT
MUSICA VIVA IN SCHOOLS “WYNISS” ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE
On Wednesday, 3 September 2025, all students in Prep to Year 6 will have the opportunity to participate in Musica Viva Australias’ In Schools ‘Wyniss’ ensemble performance to be held at Aspley State School. All students will receive a parent/carer information letter outlining the exciting details of this special performance event. Families are asked to complete the incursion consent form and return to the school administration office with the required payment no later than Wednesday 27 August 2025.
Musica Viva Australia “In Schools” program provides culturally and musical diverse shows with some of Australia’s best musicians, presenting live in-school performances to schools nationally. Musica Viva Australia is proud to be one of the country’s largest and most trusted providers of music education, dedicated to fostering creative learning and appreciation for music among students and teachers alike, with engaging music curriculum-aligned programs designed to engage, excite, educate and inspire.
About the performing ensemble – Wyniss is a Torres Strait song and dance performance allowing students to understand how culture and history are passed on through song, dance, and childhood games. While childhood games may just seem like pure fun, they are also an important record of our history. From spinning tops to string figures, this wildly entertaining and colourfully costumed ensemble show how culture and history are passed on through singing, dancing and games. By comparing their own childhood games to those from the Torres Strait, students come to understand the importance of traditions, and to be thankful to those who teach them. Musica Viva In Schools ‘Wyniss’ performance is presented by Musica Viva Australia In Schools in conjunction with NAISDA Dance College.
We are looking forward to all Aspley students experiencing this marvellous ‘Wyniss’ Musica Viva In Schools Performance.

Celebrating 135 Years: A New Chapter in Aspley’s Sporting Legacy
As we commemorate 135 proud years of Aspley SS, our school community looks forward to marking this milestone by honouring the rich legacy of Aspley’s sporting culture, while embracing the next exciting phase of growth and connection.
Aspley is well known for its competitive spirit, teamwork and sporting prowess. Our students consistently demonstrate courage, pride and commitment as they compete across our cherished house teams - Oxley, Kennedy, and Mitchell.
To celebrate this legacy and inspire new generations, we’re pleased to present concept designs for a set of new house mascots. These mascots draw deeply from the spirit of exploration, the strength of our land and the unique energy of our sporting teams. Each mascot features distinctive visual elements and powerful attributes that reflect leadership, determination and confidence.
- Our traditional house chants will remain unchanged, we’re excited to explore additional chants and celebratory symbols that tie into these vibrant new representations.
- We value the voices of our community and welcome your feedback on the mascots, their design, and the vision they represent. If you’d like to share your thoughts, please email our administration team administration@aspleyss.eq.edu.au
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be unveiling these concepts to our students, inviting their input and ideas. Should the designs resonate with our school values and community aspirations, we look forward to developing new house banners that will carry us forward for the next 135 years and beyond.
